Head Over Feet--Ch. 8
Tumblr media
Chapter 8
“How do you do that again?” The kid’s name was Noel, and he was fascinated by one of the videos I’d pulled up from one of our shows. It was Hanger doing the running shooting star press. The kid had asked me to replay it at least a dozen times.
Standing beside him, I watched the kid as he studied the move on the screen. His fingers kept toying with the zipper on his jacket.
“I was never really good at it,” I said honestly. “But basically, you get a short running start and then do a backflip onto the other guy.”
He looked up at me with a furrow in his brow. “But do you lead with your head or your chest or your foot? How do you know you’ll land in the right place?” He tugged his jacket zipper up and down, like it was a nervous tick. “What angle do you do? Can you do the geometry in your head?”
I felt my eyes bulge in surprise. “Geometry? We don’t really think about it that way. At least, I don’t.”
The furrow in Noel’s brow got deeper. “But how do you do it if you don’t do the math?” His frustration was palpable. He tugged his jacket zipper with more force.
I paused the video and sat down in the chair next to where he stood. The sound of the zipper was loud in my ears. “We just feel it. And practice a lot. I mean, a lot! My friend Adam here… he’s done that move hundreds of times. He can tell you exactly how many steps he needs to take and where he’s going to land without looking. He can do it with his eyes closed in his sleep.”
           “But—”
For a second, I thought about reaching out to put my hand on his shoulder. But the tension in his features let me know that might not be a good idea.
“It’s like this thing called muscle memory. Right? Like when you do something so often and so many times that you don’t even think about it anymore,” I said slowly. “When Adam does that move, his body kind of does the math for him.”
Noel opened his mouth to speak, but a shadow fell over us before he could. Ellie stood there with a faint smile. She settled her hand in the space between his shoulder blades. When she spoke, her voice was low and soothing.
“It’s time for special, Noel. You don’t want to be late.”
The frustration in his features smoothed out. The fidgeting with his zipper slowed. He looked up at the clock.
“Ms. Kyle, may I go to my special now?”
Ellie smiled and dropped her hand back to her side. “Of course. Don’t forget your bag.”
Noel nodded and went to grab his backpack. He gave Ellie a wave as he walked out. The moment the door closed behind him, she sank into a chair and covered her eyes with her hands.
“I’m sorry about that,” she said, her words muffled behind her fingers.
I laughed before I could stop myself. “Why? The kids were pretty awesome.”
           “I meant Noel.”
“Ellie, seriously. He just had questions.” I had the urge to reach out to her. I settled for scooting my chair a little closer. “Hell, I haven’t even thought about geometry in ten years, let alone with a shooting star press!”
She laughed and I couldn’t help but feel my heart racing in my chest. It made something slip down into my toes—this warmth that enveloped me. Ellie let out a faint sigh and took a breath. When she looked back over at me, I couldn’t stop myself.
“Go out with me.” I cringed as the words spilled out. Almost like a demand rather than a request. “I mean—”
           “Sure.”
If I didn’t know better, I would have thought she was blushing.
***
By the time I got home and dropped my bag, I was convinced the whole thing had been some sort of fever dream. There was no way that I’d actually asked Ellie Kyle on a legitimate date. I’d clearly had some bad Taco Bell or something. In reality, I was in some massive hallucination while I was in the emergency room. Or I’d wake up any minute to find that I’d overslept and missed my entire visit to Ellie in the first place.
Groaning, I flopped down on the end of my bed and stared up at the ceiling. I’d barely closed my eyes when my phone went off. Ellie’s name appeared when I clicked on the screen.
Let me know when you want to get together. Thanks again for everything today. -E.
My God. It had really happened.
Heart pounding in my throat, I took a screenshot of the message and sent it to Sam with the words don’t talk about my nuts ever again. After a moment’s thought, I sent the same one to Nick. Maybe that would make both of them leave me alone.
I should have known it wasn’t going to be anywhere near that easy.
Not five seconds later, my ringtone blared through the room.
“What, Sam?” My voice came out a little gruffer than I intended.
Laughter rolled through the line. “Close,” my little brother cackled.
“Oh hell,” I grunted. “I’d rather talk to Sam.”
           “I’m here, too!”
The urge to hang up ran through me. It was one thing for Sam to haze me about not dating, but it was something else entirely for my baby brother to back her up.
           “When is it?”
           “Where are you going?”
“Don’t go to Black Bear. Go somewhere nice.”
“Make sure you get a haircut.”
“And clean up those mutton chops!”
           “Remember—”
“STOP!” Their rapid-fire questions and comments swam through my head, making it ache. “Jesus, please stop.”
Instantly, silence crackled down the line. It was almost like I could hear them breathing. When I closed my eyes, I could imagine the two of them on the sofa in Sam’s apartment with Nick’s phone on his knee and both with contrite expressions.
“Sorry,” Sam said after a few moments of strained quiet.
I sighed and sat up, my head in my hand. “It’s okay. I’m still surprised as hell myself.”
For half a second, I thought back to that day in LAX when we first met Sam. How I secretly put her number in my phone from the tag on her luggage. I had every intention of asking her out the instant I saw her. But then I saw how my brother looked at her and heard how he talked about her in the days afterward. I couldn’t bring myself to go through with calling and asking her out. Not when it was clear that Nick was already smitten with her after ten minutes.
It was something I was ashamed of, even if no one knew. Truth was I hoped no one ever knew.
“How can we help?” Nick asked evenly. “What d’you need?”
I scrubbed my face with my hand. “Honestly, I don’t have any clue. You know how long it’s been since I’ve been on a date.”
Before I could spiral back into thoughts of Her, Sam’s voice rushed down the line. “It’s dating bootcamp for you then, Matty!”
My head fell forward. I put it between my knees, sure I was going to panic if I didn’t. An ache started behind my eyes, throbbing in time with my heartbeat. “You know what, Sammy? Sure. What’s the worst that could happen?”
She squealed so loud I nearly threw the phone across the room.

if anyone on here wants/needs banners for fics (or master lists), moodboards, fic inspired collages, etc. i’d be happy to make them. i love making them for myself but kinda run out of inspiration. feel free to message me or send me an ask, you can send me the fic link of your own or if there’s a series/fic you really want to be able to visualize. pretty open ended. send the fic (obvi), the general idea, vibes you’re looking for, with or without text and the format you want it in (banner, moodboard, collage, etc.) I love doing them for series since it gives me more to work with but I also love one shots.
it would be completely free and I don’t put a watermark on my stuff <3
if anyone’s interested let me know!!

Head Over Feet--Ch. 7
Tumblr media
Chapter 7
I looked myself over in the mirror on the back of the closet door. There were several hours left before I had to be at Ellie’s school, but I was anxious to get going. To get the whole thing started. I couldn’t quite explain what it was that made me feel so anxious about it other than the fact that I felt like I was going in front of the firing squad.
Maybe I was. They were middle schoolers after all.
I put on a classic rock station and tried to force myself to calm down by going through all of the things that I’d brought back from Japan for Ellie and her class. I counted them off, making sure that nothing was folded or wrinkled. Paranoia kicked in and I dug out my phone, going through my videos again to make sure that everything was still there. I double checked the Cloud to be sure they hadn’t disappeared. I triple checked my email to assure myself that I’d actually sent them to her in the first place. It was odd that I was so nervous about this whole thing.
Part of me just wanted it to be over. I couldn’t explain it any other way. The anxiety was turning my guts inside out. I knew that as soon as I got inside the classroom everything would be just fine. That it would be an amazing time and that I would hold court in that middle school classroom like I had with my friends in high school. I’d always been good at entertaining people. If I could just get over this strange twist in my stomach, everything else would figure itself out.
I forced myself to take a few deep breaths and picked up everything, tucking it all carefully into my backpack. For the first few steps, I carried the bag like a baby before I rolled my eyes and slung the bag over my shoulder. A few bent corners and a wrinkle or two wouldn’t hurt anything.
Grabbing my keys, I rushed out of my apartment. I had almost an hour before I had to be there and the school was barely fifteen minutes away. But I figured I would have to go through some visitor check-in process and didn’t want to make myself late. The last thing I wanted was to upset Ellie or to make her look bad after she’d gone to so much trouble to get approval for me to come give a talk.
Twelve minutes later, I was turning onto Feron Boulevard with hands that were shaking and sweating as if I was going to pick up a girl for my first date. By the time I’d swung into a spot in the parking lot of Rancho Cucamonga Middle School, I was entirely certain that I was going to throw up. My hands were shaking so hard that I fumbled my phone and dropped it into the space between the seat and the console. I leaned over and banged my forehead against the steering wheel while cursing everyone and everything.
“Damnit,” I shouted as my ringtone blared through the car. I threw the door open and shoved the seat back as I groped around for it. The more it rang, the more anxious I got. “Where the hell is it?!”
By the time I got my hands on it, the ringing had stopped. The call had gone to voicemail. Before I could get into my log to see who’d called, a series of text messages came through. One was from Sam—being a smartass as usual. Another was from Nick wishing me luck. The third and fourth were from Ellie, asking if I was okay or needed help finding the room.
I shot back a quick response that I’d just pulled in outside and would be there as soon as I checked in. Then I grabbed my bag and everything I’d brought with me from Japan and juggled it all as I slipped in the front door of the school and stopped by the main office to get my visitor’s badge.
***
My head was spinning as I stood outside room 1013. There was a little plastic sign on the wall that said Ms. Kyle, Language Arts. Colorful replicas of book dust jackets were taped up all over the door. A thermometer chart was colored about halfway up with red paper. Across the top were the words Pages for Pizza. The goal was 2,000.
The door opened just as I reached out to knock. Ellie stood there with her hair pulled back in a high ponytail in a dress that looked like it had walked right out of The Magic School Bus. It had little books, pens, and paper printed on it. I must have made a noise or a face.
“What?” she said with a partial frown. I remembered that look from when I was in school. Teacher-face.
“Nothing,” I replied, trying to keep my expression neutral even though I wanted to crack a smile. “I like your dress.”
Ellie rolled her eyes and stepped out of the way. “Come on in. They’re just finishing a quiz, so be quiet.”
I nodded nervously and practically tiptoed into the room. Twenty-eight kids sat clustered together at desks set up in a horseshoe facing a giant TV screen. Ellie pointed me toward a table at the back. I was paranoid at every sound I made while I tried to unpack everything without distracting them from their test.
It was weird being back in a classroom. Hell, being back in a school! My parents had let me leave school to be taught at home when I was so depressed that I was failing classes. Of course, Mom insisted that I graduate half a year early and with straight A’s. Sometimes, I’m convinced that she’s still upset that I didn’t take college seriously. I’d honestly only enrolled for the financial aid, but it sort of dries up when you fail your classes because you just don’t show up. Wrestling was all I’d ever wanted—even when I’d worked at Her dad’s plant and tried so hard to conform to what I was supposed to do—but sometimes I wondered if not going to college was going to bite me in the ass sooner or later.
Ellie looked up and smiled as she paced around the curve of desks. Surprisingly, every single student had their head tilted down toward their work, hands moving diligently across the paper in front of them. I stole a glance at the paper on the closest desk. The Epic of Gilgamesh? I didn’t remember reading that in middle school! Had things changed so much? Or was I one of the dumb kids?
Or maybe these kids were just really smart.
An alarm went off in the front. It was so loud in the quiet that I jumped. Ellie tried to hide a grin and chuckle as her students dutifully lined up and dropped their papers one-by-one in a tray on her desk. They filed back to their seats with a practiced almost monotonous pace. But as soon as they sat back down, their chatter filled the room with a low hum.
A trio of boys gave one another high-fives, one whispering, “I told you Enki would be on it!” Two girls near the front had their heads together, furiously flipping pages in the textbooks in front of them. A few kids stared out into space with mildly shell-shocked looks on their faces.
Ah, I remembered that post-test feeling well! Good to see some things didn’t change.
Ellie slipped back to the front of the room. As she passed by, students sat up straight. They picked up pens, pencils, and notebooks, all poised to record the next lesson. Ellie grinned at them and waved her hand. Like magic, everything disappeared just as quickly as it had appeared in the first place.
“Now that you’ve finished your quiz, did anyone get the bonus question?” Ellie had a wide grin on her face, and it made her honey eyes twinkling. She swept her gaze around the room with her hand propped on her hip.
A set of hands went up. One of them belonged to the boy who’d spoken earlier. Ellie pointed in his direction. “What’s the answer to the bonus, Zachary?”
The kid named Zachary smiled. “Antediluvian.”
Ellie’s smile broadened. She nodded and her ponytail bobbed. “Fantastic. Someone give me another example of a story or myth that deals with antediluvian themes.”
Another shot of hands. Ellie called on one of the girls from the top of the semicircle who had been flipping through her notes. “Noah.”
           “In…?”
“The Torah and the Old Testament.”
           “Good. Anyone else?”
A tiny boy at the far end of the arc practically bounced in his chair. Ellie clicked her fingers and pointed at him. “It’s also Nuh in the Quran. And the stories in the Brahmana and Puranas about Vishnu and Manu!”
I felt my eyes practically fall out of my head and my jaw hit the floor. I literally knew two of the answers that the kids had given. And honestly, if it hadn’t been for my dad being really focused on teaching us the Bible growing up I wouldn’t even have known what antediluvian meant. Mom made me read The Epic of Gilgamesh for one of my English credits when I was homeschooled, but I couldn’t remember much more than he built a boat.
“Fantastic,” Ellie beamed proudly, clapping her hands once. The kids clapped back twice. She did it twice. They did it three times. “Instead of going to geography today, we have a guest who has come to talk to you guys about traveling in Japan. He’s brought some things to show you, including a video. We’re going to watch that first, and then he’s going to talk to you for a while. If you have questions afterward, I’m sure he’ll be happy to answer them for you.”
She looked back at me and grinned. The kids turned in their chairs, following her gaze. Unsure what to do, I saluted them with two fingers and gave a weird half smile. The kids looked half confused and half unamused. Ellie tried hard not to chuckle.
           But she failed.
She turned her back and went over to a podium with a laptop sitting on top. It took a few seconds before the video we filmed and Kenny narrated came up. Nick was filming, just like he did for our web show. I was kind of tagging along beside Kenny making sure that he didn’t run into anyone or anything as he walked backwards.
“Gakusei no minasan, kon'nichiwa! Watashinonamaeha Kenny Omega. Nihon no Kōbe e yōkoso.” Kenny smiled and started talking in his smooth, lilting tone. He spoke Japanese like he’d been born there, and he’d lived in the Katsushida ward of Tokyo so long that he’d travelled most of the country at least once. “Kōbe wa Arima onsen no honkyochideari, sekai-teki ni yūmeina gyūniku no hasshō-chi to shite mo shira rete imasu.”
A few of the kids looked between each other and Ellie then back over their shoulders at me. I had one hand tucked into my pocket and pointed toward the screen with the other, brows raised.
“Does he speak Japanese?” a kid halfway up the semi-circle whispered to his neighbor.
“Ichibu wakarimasu,” I replied. I understand some.
With wide eyes, he turned back toward the screen, where Kenny and I were walking through the Shinkowa market near where he lived. Kenny was waving around a big loaf of bread and talking about the shop. The video went on for a few more minutes before it cycled back to where we were before. Kenny grinned.
“So… for those of you who don’t speak Japanese…” He made an I can’t believe you don’t face and shrugged. “Let me translate. Hello, students! My name is Kenny Omega and welcome to Kōbe, Japan. Kōbe is home to the Arima Onsen hot spring and is the origin of its namesake world-famous beef.”
The video played again, almost a shot-for-shot duplicate with Kenny translating his previous narration into English. When it was over, the kids gave a faint round of applause and looked expectantly at Ellie.
“Guys,” she said with another bright smile, “this is my very good friend, Matt Jackson. He’s a professional wrestler and he’s been traveling all across the US and Japan for the past few years.”
I grabbed up my bag and started toward the front. Ellie gave me an encouraging nod as I walked past.
“Hey. My name is Matt Jackson, and English class gave me hives.”
A round of snickers went through the room. Ellie giggled into her hand. “He’s not lying. He used to skip class.”
