There’s an ongoing joke that this random man punching Snow is Katniss’ grandfather. It’s so hilarious that I choose to believe it is CANON.
It’s true. It’s all connected. 🤓👆
It’s a joke where the punchline is delivered first and Katniss is the one that ends it.

I've seen some folks confused about the Covey family tree and how Burdock is related.
In SOTR, Haymitch states that Lenore Dove is one of Burdock's cousins from his mother's side. We know that Lenore Dove is a Baird. Of the original Covey in District 12 there are three Baird cousins; Lucy Gray, Maude Ivory, and Barb Azure.
We know from TBOSAS that Lucy Gray is gone. We know Lenore Dove's mother died giving birth to her and we see Maude Ivory is buried in the Covey graveyard but not Barb Azure. So it's safe to assume Maude Ivory is Lenore Dove's mother.
And because of math I’ll assuming Barb Azure is Burdock's grandmother. ("Barb Azure was dating a woman!" Bi people do exist friends.) And that would make Burdock Everdeen and Lenore Dove Baird second cousins once removed.
This chart is made by DoveMakes. Click here to watch her Youtube video about the Covey! I highly recommend checking out her channel if you haven't yet!
Tumblr media
Besides the fact that Burdock and Lenore Dove are blood related, Burdock Everdeen is Covey. He knows Covey songs, he refers to Lenore Dove as family, he knows where the Covey graveyard is. An outsider who wasn't family would not know where the Covey bury their people.
This means that Katniss and Prim are also Covey!

Thinking about tbosas from the other perspective is so funny to me because imagine you’re Lucy Gray and the way you make a living is by singing and being a charming, charismatic performer. The people in your district love you, you have a nice family, sure your parents are dead but things aren’t so bad.
Then you get Reaped because your boyfriend cheated on you - so now you have to fight for your life in an arena.
When you get to the Capitol you’re met by a guy around your age who says his job is to take care of you in the arena, so you figure you should probably use some of those charms you live by on him so you have a better chance at survival. So you flirt with him a little, save his life etc. It works! He helps you! Now you’ve won the Hunger Games! You get to go home and see your family! Thank you random Capitol guy for your help, bye bye now.
And then you’re singing on stage, with your family who you literally killed people to see again, thrilled to be alive and this fuckin Capitol guy has followed you home.
Oh and also he’s a peacekeeper now so is legally allowed a gun.
And now he kind of won’t leave you alone - the charm worked too well and he’s obsessed with you. Brilliant. But you’re a survivor. So you let him get closer, just enough to feel safe. And as you get to know him better, maybe you’re thinking, hey this guy isn’t so bad, he’s kind of cute with his buzzcut and he seems to really like you, maybe this could be something. Also it might be useful to have a peacekeeper on side - everything in your district is about survival.
Things are going well, you write a song about him, he cries, your little cousin loves him.
And then he murders someone in front of you and you’re like oh shit he crazy. And THEN you realise that because of the person he murdered, the mayor is now out for your blood and you’re probably gonna die so you have to get out of there ASAP so you say bye to this guy and he INVITES HIMSELF TO YOUR ESCAPE PLAN and you have to be like “oh sure, that’s super news, would absolutely love to have you along with me, I’m so glad you asked.” So now you’re stuck with him again.
And THEN you’re in the middle of escaping and he fuckin tells you he’s murdered an extra person you didn’t know about and when you ask him who, he says his old self and now you’re thinking oh shit he CRAZY crazy. And THEN he finds the gun he used and you realise that if he destroys that evidence then you’re the only loose end and he has a kind of crazy look in his eye so you’re like, okay time to nip this in the bud, I’m outta here gotta go pick some katniss. So you run away from him and THEN he follows you again and fuckin shoots at you so you run FASTER and now you’ve disappeared and no one will ever find out what happened to you which drives him absolutely crazy for 60+ years.
Oh and also they’re going to erase all footage of your Games so no one will remember you and he’s going to become a tyrannical dictator who has personal beef with three different sixteen year olds from your district over the years, all because you hurt his feelings one time.

SOTR SPOILERS
Anyway, this book made a hole in my chest so I need to talk to someone about the things that made the most impact on me. (I will also post my favourite parts in another post)
-Lenore Dove being Maude Ivory's daughter (probably).
-The fact that Maude Ivory, Lucy Gray and Lenore Dove died as a consequence of their love.
-The birds imagery. Doves, canaries, mockinjay.
-Burdock and Asterid. The fact that Burdock saved Ortho. The fact that if Haymitch didn't drive Burdock away he probably would have been an uncle for Katniss. Everything about their names (Burdocks being a "useful" plant, like Katniss, Asterid and Primrose being flowers.)
-The fact that while we see Katniss in Haymitch, he saw her first and foremost as Louella.
-The reaping being rigged. He was almost free. All of his games were avoidable. He could almost have a "normal life".
-Honestly everything about Maysilee and Merrilee, when she asked if she was always going to be a twin I almost cried. (My sister died not too long ago so this hit me like a train)
-The fact Louella died before the games???? And they didn't even bother telling her family?? Is her body still in the capitol? Did they give her body back?
-my god Ampert. They sent beete's boy to die, to punish him. And he knew he wasn't going to come back, that he could never save him.
-President Snow projecting his insecurities into Haymitch. That man Is fucking obsessed with Lucy Gray still. I hope seeing Katniss singing covey's songs gave him an aneurysm.
-Wyatt protecting Lou Lou even tho he knew he was gonna die. He knew it, because he is so good at calculating odds. We are led to believe he will use this skill to survive, and instead...
-When Haymitch stole Louella's body, thinking about the little bird Lenore Dove found. That almost drove me insane.
-Haymitch almost getting a "decent" ending with Lenore Dove, just to watch her die poisoned from something he thought was his own.
-Haymitch going to her house in the middle of the night like a madman asking where she is
-haymitch thinking Merrilee is Maysilee
-The covey's graves. That almost took me out.
-Loulou and Maysilee dying in his arms. Foul play honestly.
-THE FACT THAT HIS STORY IS REWRITTEN, AND NO ONE KNOWS WHAT HE REALLY DID DURING HIS GAMES.
-Effie being nice and kind to him, but absolutely detached from reality, the propaganda really did a number on her.
-Ma and Sid dying litterally the evening he came back
-Katniss being the one that procures him the geese's eggs.

“It’s a treat to hear her sing, since she never does it in public. None of the Covey do.”
Thinking of the dead Covey girls, like three wretched canaries in a coal mine, singing songs of revolution in a time too stifling to let them live. Harbingers of the change to come slaughtered by the Capitol, but lighting the way nonetheless.

The Covey, on top of insisting that they aren’t being district and their more outright rebellions also bring a really interesting aspect of chaos to District 12: the world BEFORE the war.
I’ve been hung up on how Maude Ivory sings “Oh My Darling Clementine”, a real folk song from even well before OUR time. The fact that the Covey are able to remember and bring back culture from before the Districts existed is extremely powerful and dangerous to the Capitol, as it suggests knowledge of a world without the district system.
Very few other characters mention this, one being Plutarch (MJ 74 “We’re going to form a republic where the people of each district and the Capitol can elect their own representatives to be their voice in a centralized government. Don’t look so suspicious; it’s worked before.”)
One of the biggest reasons why the Covey are dangerous is because through their music, they preserve times of old, and enforce further that the sun may rise on the reaping now, but it didn’t always, which means that it may not always in the future either.

the tragedy and beauty of lucy gray and maude ivory and lenore dove who all loved so much that they payed for it with their lives. gray and ivory and dove, neutral shades describing girls who were colourful and daring and bold. singers. rebels. musicians. covey. three colours so very close to white, but ultimately not. almost, almost white, like the snow, but not quite. gray and ivory and dove, living in parallels and dying in parallels then resting next to each other, in a pretty row, a gradient, forever and always just beyond snow's reach.

ranking lucy gray's outfits in the tbosas movie as a costume design student ✶✧
quite possibly, everything rachel zegler wears is my favorite part of tbosas. trish summerville is a big personal hero of mine, and tbosas is my favorite hunger games film in terms of costume design!!! so as a disclaimer, i love every one of these looks with everything in me, this is just me ranking them.
8. swimsuit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this really shouldn't be in last place, because crochet swimwear? brilliant. and so beautiful. and so in-universe.
i love how all the covey swimwear feels like it was hand-made by the characters themselves. obviously, nobody in district 12 is swimming for pleasure much (we learn this from the first book, and haymitch and burdie just skinny dipped lol), so naturally the covey would have made their own things to wear by hand.
7. sejanus' execution
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the details of the snakes on her belt and the hand stitching/embroidery on her sleeves are so wonderful. for an outfit that never really gets a full shot in the film (most of rachel's shots in this scene are closeups from the neck up), the dedication to detail is super admirable.
6. well i'm not made out of sugar
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's such a good detail how coriolanus' mother's shawl perfectly color compliments the rest of this outfit. it's like she picked it out to match on purpose, which makes the betrayal all the more devastating. i think this scene is also one of trish's stronger uses of color symbolism- the warm, sunshine-y colors of lucy gray contrasting the stark, bare palette of everything coriolanus wears in 12. she's a symbol of hope. he's trying to end that.
5. the covey lake
Tumblr media Tumblr media
huge fan of the simplicity here. it's just a dress over the swimsuit. and yet everything about this screams lucy gray and screams covey. look at those mismatched little brass buttons!! the swimsuit peeking out from underneath!! the plum color suits rachel zegler so well- it's just generally so gorgeous.
4. pure as the driven snow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this outfit was one of the things about this movie that stuck in my head the most after walking out of the theater. there's this carefree, thrown-on essence to it, like the flowers in her hair are an afterthought, or maude ivory helped her put them in. i wish i could find better pictures of the vest, because the beading details are so beautiful. the reusing of her boots is a good detail too, because obviously she wouldn't have that many pairs of shoes.
3. the meadow
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
trish summerville did a great job at building a repeated silhouette for lucy gray. the cinched waist, blousy or sleeveless top, and a-line, flowing skirt is in almost every outfit, and i think this one is the most classic example of that look. i think she looks so beautiful in blue, and i like that she's dressed in such a wide variety of colors throughout the film- always something completely different than the last.
2. the rainbow dress
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OBVIOUSLY. hand painted corset are you kidding me? i remember seeing this in the trailer and thinking truly, she could not have more perfectly recreated the dress from the book. it stays true to lucy gray's sillhouette, the ruffles feel bright enough to be a rainbow, but muted enough to still feel in-universe/accurate for 12. one of my favorite details is her boots ↓
Tumblr media
they're old, and have a vintage feel, but something about how chunky they are also reminds us that despite the folksy charm, we are also in a dystopian future.
1. nothing you can take from me
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
my baby. my darling. possibly my favorite costume of any hunger games film. i am IN LOVE with this outfit.
the flower decal trimming and embroidery on her blouse, and the crushed navy velvet that feels like it was found at a 100 year old antique store. the boots are back. lacy top underneath, hand crocheted no doubt. purple in the skirt, but it's subtle- purple is her most repeated color element. it's rebellious, it's royal. the slight 1940s references in the silhouette.
DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE HAIR. ribbons and feathers threaded throughout her curls, giving her the impression of a bird in flight when she twirls??? REMIND YOU OF ANYTHING?????
this is her triumphant return moment, her defiant song against the oppression of the capitol. she's captivated the crowd....just like a certain someone will years and years later.

A reminder that the Covey had nothing to do with the Dark Days of Panem. They were nomadic and didn't take sides until the Peacekeepers forced them to settle into the districts.
How ironic that a descendant of the Covey was the one to finally end the tyranny.

Some of y'all are pissing me off. Covey names are two parts one based on a Ballad the other a color but they are still on name. Lucy Grey never goes by Lucy, she says to Lepidus Malmsey that Lucy is not her name, it's Lucy Grey. Lenore Dove isn't just Lenore she's Lenore DOVE. The only time anyone calls her Lenore is when Haymitch is trying to trick Snow. This goes for Tam Amber, Clerk Carmine, Maude Ivory, Bard Azure and Billy Taupe as well. If CORIOLANUS SNOW can say their names correctly So. Can. You.
