So anyway, in my rewrite, I’m thinking I’m gonna change it so that they can hide their wings completely by kinda like… pulling them into their backs, like a shapeshifting kinda thing? Idk. I know it doesn’t really make total sense, but neither does them being able to hide huge fucken 14 ft wings under a damn hoodie lmao

Welp, I Guess I’ll Talk About My Maximum Ride Rewrite Now
I promised I’d post about my rewrite soon, totally not expecting to do it for at least a few weeks. Then I opened up my doc after like a month and wrote two chapters in two days.
So, now equipped with a stronger drive to write (at least for now) I’ll share some details on my rewrite project. I’ll be putting this under a cut because holy fuck I did not expect to write this much:
The full title for the series is going to be Fly On, Maximum Ride. The individual book rewrites are going to be from song lyrics (or song titles? haven’t decided). Incidentally, the “Fly On” part of the title also comes from song lyrics.
Why, you may ask, am I doing the cliché AO3 “song lyrics as the title” thing? Because music ended up having a larger impact on this series than intended. What started out as me listing each flock members’ favorite bands and songs somehow wove so deeply into them that I cannot remove it.
(I’m aware kisses4butterflies on AO3 also has a music thing going in their rewrite. I came up with my version independently, and I do think it’s cool we had similar ideas)
Now to what people actually care about: the story and characters 👀
First off: Jeb never died/faked his death. He is still living with the flock as we speak, leaving the house every so often to get groceries or supplies for the flock. Sometimes he’s gone for a few days, sometimes weeks, sometimes a bit longer. But he’s still a part of the flock’s life. He trains them, teaches them, makes sure they’re healthy, rewards them when they do good, etc.
Ari sadly does not exist. I could’ve tried to come up with something for him, but I removed him from the plot so early on there’s no way to squeeze him back in. Maybe he could’ve been living with the flock as a normal human kid, but I feel like that would’ve just made him Gazzy Without Wings so :/
The house is…different. I don’t want to say much on that now, but just know the flock isn’t waking up with the sun or going on daily flights around the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. They go outside to train and occasionally play, but only when Jeb lets them.
Max, Fang, and Nudge are probably the only real physical fighters of the bunch. Iggy’s extremely good at assembling traps and weapons he can use, but he doesn’t have the same training as his siblings. Gazzy is training to be a good fighter, and training with Iggy on building things (he’s much more eager about the bombs than Iggy is), but he’s still a kid and he’s still learning. Angel is a six year old, and she’s also slightly lagging behind on her motor skills, so safe to say she is not good in a fight.
The flock still looks somewhat human-like, but not enough that they pass 100%. Their wings are massive, for one, and they can’t just fold them up into their backs. They need bulky jackets and pants to squish their wings inside if they want to hide them. They also have feathers along the backs of their arms and legs. Their pectoral muscles are larger and they have broader shoulders, all to help support the wings. They have smaller and rounder bird eyes with raptor vision, and they’ve got hollow bones and air sacs just like birds do.
In terms of what birds the flock’s wings are based on: Max = golden eagle, Fang = peregrine falcon, Iggy = osprey, Nudge = american kestrel, Gazzy = red tailed hawk, Angel = ferruginous hawk. Their eyes also match the birds they’re based on.
Everyone in the flock has pretty noticeable scars. Max has a large one on her cheek. Fang has several long ones across his chest. Iggy’s eyes are basically a scar on their own. Nudge has scars on her hands that flare up in pain. Both Max and Gazzy have scars around their neck in the same places. Angel doesn’t have scars yet, but she’s going to get some soon.
The kids fully believe they’re freaks of nature who cannot live outside of their home or else they’ll be hunted down or taken back to The School.
The flock all consider themselves siblings. This does in fact mean no Max-Fang romance. Honestly I wouldn’t know what to do with it even if they weren’t siblings. I have 1 (one) planned romance in book 2, and it doesn’t involve either of them.
There’s not de facto leader, since Jeb is still there. Max, Fang, and Iggy all take up different roles when he’s gone to help around the house.
Max and Fang do have a really close bond, though. They were cage neighbors at The School for as long as they can remember, and they developed a very close friendship, always looking out for one another, always ready to do anything to save each other. Even now, four years after leaving The School, they’re constantly there for each other, helping deal with trauma the only ways they know how.
Of course, when Max and Fang aren’t physically or mentally able to help, Iggy’s there to be the emotional support for his siblings. He’s one of the oldest kids, so he’s treated as such, James. Admittedly, there is A Lot to Iggy that won’t get unpacked until after book 1. But he’s still very blind. Still very skilled. Still very gay.
Nudge, being one of the younger three, got to have a slightly happier childhood, free to play with dolls and be a kid. She still struggles with nightmares and flashbacks, but not to the degree that her older siblings do. Now that she’s getting older, she has to train more, something she hates. Just like in canon, she really just wants to be a normal girl. She’s scared of people, but also fascinated by them and wishing she could live like they do.
Gazzy barely remembers anything from The School. It definitely had an impact on him, but the few memories he has are implicit childhood ones that are more sensory than anything. He’s the most innocent of the kids, but he’s also very aware of his siblings’ struggles and tries to help when he can. He’s willing to fight, despite his total lack of experience.
Angel, unfortunately, absorbed plenty of bad memories as a baby, when she couldn’t control her powers very well and overheard everyone’s nightmares. She’s aware of what happened at The School, but she tries not to bring it up because it makes her siblings sad. She still has nightmares about it, still remembers things she shouldn’t. However, memories don’t quite compare to experiencing the real thing...
Gazzy and Angel are indeed biologically related instead of just found family. I’ve put a bit of emphasis on that being different. Not in a way that invalidates found family, don’t worry. It’s just that I personally believe if you already have a found family dynamic and are now including blood siblings, there should be some significance to it, because otherwise why do they need to be related if everyone is already family? Basically: Gazzy and Angel are very very close. They love each other, they play together, they barely ever argue or fight. They’re babies, and I will protect them (I say as I put them through several back-to-back traumatic events)
Speaking of biological families…uh, most of the flock doesn’t have any. Max isn’t Jeb and Dr. Martinez’ kid, the flock doesn’t go on a hunt for their parents that goes nowhere. In this world, a good chunk of the test subjects made through donor eggs and sperm that’s been genetically altered in advance and raised in artificial wombs. Yeah, sure, they’ve got donor parents out there somewhere, but it’s not top priority for most of the flock. They’ve got guardians looking out for them, and when they don’t they’re just fighting on their own.
Despite not being related to Dr. Martinez, Max is still Latina. I didn’t change any of the races - Fang is Asian, Nudge is black, Iggy and Gazzy and Angel are white - except for adding some clarification on Fang, since Asian is a very broad term (he’s got DNA from Southeast Asia and East Asia, more specifically The Philippines and South Korea). Again, stuff that will be more relevant after book 1.
Some kids are donated by real people, though, usually altered in very, very early stages of development and monitored heavily until they’re born. Families sign a waiver promising a nice paycheck to cover all medical expenses, and a disclaimer of possible permanent damage to the body or death. There is one member of the flock who was donated to The School this way. I’m not telling who yet.
Ohhh boy the Erasers. I have so much to say about Erasers, but I’ll have to keep it short.
When I started this rewrite, I had the question: “Why do we never see newly made Erasers? They can’t just start out as full-grown adults.” So, in this rewrite, we have child Erasers, which the flock refers to as “dogs”. They age quickly, so they do look like full grown adults when they’re three or four, however it doesn’t last long, since rapid aging doesn’t exactly stop. They live for roughly seven years max, but most of them outlive their fighting use before that.
Full-grown Erasers are stronger, tougher, and are experts at following orders since it’s all they know. Dogs, on the other hand, are wild and violent. They’ll tear into anything they get their hands on and they’re harder to control, since they’re still learning. Itex utilizes them both.
Also of note on Erasers: theyre officially just Lupine hybrids, and the Eraser nickname was made up by the various children at The School, because they only ever came to the cage room to take away the unfortunate kids who didn’t live long enough, or the kids who were too sick to keep on living, effectively “erasing” them.
The School is a nickname that Gazzy came up with after they left. He still didn’t really understand the bad place they came from and how it was affecting his siblings, but kids on TV always talked about school like it was the worst thing in the world, so he figured that must be where they came from. He used it a lot, and it stuck with the rest of the flock too.
Did I mention there’s more mutant kids? Because there’s more mutant kids. A LOT of mutant kids. 296 of them at The School alone, with over half of those being Erasers/dogs. They have to make a lot, since you never know which ones will succeed, which ones will be used for non mutation-related testing, and which ones will fail.
Where do they get the money for so many research babies? The flock doesn’t know any of this, but Itex is massive. Governments are willing to pay outrageous prices to fill their military with Erasers, and the research Itex provides from studying their mutants have cured diseases and provided better medical treatment for ordinary people around the world. The human experimentation is an open secret (though granted most people don’t know the entire process). Most of them can’t do much, however. Itex is very, very old, and it’s far too powerful for your average Joe to stop on their own.
Also there’s no “save the world” plotline. There’s some saving the world in there eventually (not now, but eventually), but it’s not a predestined thing that Jeb tells Max. Max wasn’t created to save the world. She and her siblings were created for something else...
...Anyways, that’s about all I have time for right now. I might post more details later, but feel free to hit me with a DM or an ask if you have any thoughts. Currently the rewrite is sitting at 23 chapters, which means I’m juuust over halfway done with the first draft lol. I don’t know when it’ll be out. I work on and off and I’m not super consistent. But hopefully I’ll have something done within the next twenty years. :P

Can someone doing a Maxim Ride rewrite make it that when they do their New York makeover challenge ( which if you're not including that, that seems like a sin because it is one of my favorite scenes in the first book cuz , it's just so fucking goofy)
Have Max dye her hair from brown to blonde.
This is mostly because of the hair controversy with the inconsistency of whether James Patterson wrote her with brown hair or blonde hair (or red???). I remember in the fandoms it was always such a talked about thing. In the book she had brown hair or brown with blonde streaks but on the cover she always had very blonde hair. The manga came out and she had blonde hair.
Movie and Marvel comic also fucked it up but I don't want to talk about it right now. But another cool concept to add to that would be having Max be very paranoid about her being chased and have her dye her hair a lot.
End game would be that she gets sick of it and shaves it out for Hawk

HEY!
I can't find my old posts, I think I hid one but I don't know where those go so!!! Hey!!! I'm still writing the Maximum Ride rewrite!!!
I have a lot of material, as you might assume from the amount of time this has taken me, and feel semi-confident that I can start posting it on AO3 soon. I will make a new post here when I do finally publish it, but I wanted to let people know that I didn't just say I would do it and then dip. I have been Writing. Things are Happening. I hope this will go over Well with you all.
A short character intro for you all to get excited about for now: the Flock lives peacefully in a large home owned by Dr. Martinez in the Rockies. Max, nineteen, acts as the tentative leader when her mom isn't around. Fang, seventeen, is the house's resident shadow, and his neon gamer lights can be seen best in the dead of night, glowing from under his bedroom door. Iggy, also seventeen and one of the only two members who doesn't have wings, would be the mom of the group if he let them call him that. Naomi, fourteen, is a budding photographer with a bright future, known the house over for her beautiful aerial shots taken without the use of a drone. Angel, six and also wingless, is the house's resident little one, still innocent and hopeful about the world, living in a world where Barbie's fight the Terminator and win by challenging him to a spelling bee. Or something. Who knows what her Barbie sessions are actually about.

We give the MR manga plenty of (completely deserved) flack regarding its character design, but you gotta respect it for its bravery in making Fang’s introductory panel be them in the stereotypical “anime girl putting up her hair” pose. 10/10 no notes.

Jumping on the Maximum Ride rewrite train
Disclaimer I have not read Maximum Ride in years and I never read from Max onward and there’s no order to this I’m just writing down whatever I think of.
First of all, the Flock are test tube babies and anyone who tells them they are biologically their parents is a liar and they know this
Gasman has an actual name, August, because calling him Gasman is just weird. It can still be a nickname tho. I’m gonna be referring to him as August for the rest of the list btw
Max and Fang are 16, Iggy is 15, Nudge is 13, August is 10, and Angel is 6
They don’t randomly get powers that are irrelevant and useless. All their powers are present from the beginning, they just can’t seem to control them
Jeb is evil and emotionally manipulative like in canon and a recurrent plot point is the Flock trying to come to terms with the fact that he never really cared for them.
Fang uses a fucking VPN for his dumbass blog, also his blog looks like what you’d think Gerard Way’s MySpace page would look like.
Ari is still SEVEN and acts like you’d expect a SEVEN year old would: IE not being a creep to Max and not looking like he’s 18 and just being a scared little kid put through cruel experimentation by his father.
Total is there, but he cannot talk. No, not even to Angel. He’s just a little guy with no powers and no wings.
Angel can still read minds, but she’s really bad at controlling it. She sometimes accidentally reads minds without meaning to and feels bad about it because she is a child and shouldn’t be evil for no reason.
No forced ass “You’re kids but also save the world habe fun” plot. It’s all them trying to stay undiscovered and safe. Every adult they meet betrays them (Besides Dr. Martinez)
Speaking of, Dr. Martinez takes them in and adopts them as her own once she and Ella manage to prove to the Flock that they’re like the only trustworthy people in the damn world.
Dr. Martinez gets to slap Jeb when he comes and tries to take the Flock away like “fuck you these are my kids!!”
The Flock considers each other siblings. Meaning no weird Max/Fang romance and also they’re kids.
The worst thing that happens is of course the School capturing everyone and now the Flock has to escape the school without Jeb’s help AND rescue Dr. Martinez and Ella bc that’s their mom and sister!!!!
That’s all I got James Patterson give me the rights to Maximum Ride right now

the temptation to rewrite the australian total drama world tour episode is strong
add alenoah for flavour (keep the aleheather rivalry and alecourtney friendship, they're cool)
MAKE IT FUCKING GEOGRAPHICALLY ACCURATE -
From the wiki: 'Chris states that Hanging Rock is in the Blue Mountains of Australia, but Hanging Rock is located in the Australian state of Victoria, while the Blue Mountains are in New South Wales, near Sydney.'
And Hanging Rock doesn't look like that, neither does the Blue Mountains!
So I would do this by:
Making London a reward challenge w/ Team Chris winning (as they truly deserve) so Noah is safe. Team Chris gains Duncan as there 'reward'. The Gwuncan kiss doesn't happen because I don't like it.
Team Chris wins in Greece as Noah volunteers and crushes the boar challenge (canonically good with animals). Team Amazon votes off Sierra because she made them lose - Courtney is annoyed at her for beating her up, Cody always votes for her, and Heather also votes for her.
In X-Files, Team Chris still lose and Tyler gets medically evacuated (RIP) (he's alive but ouch).
Then I would keep the challenge (but remove the emu riding part because you do not fuck with emus like that or ride them - we lost a war to them), but make it so that each team is split into two, tossed somewhere in Melbourne and has to find their way via public transport to Hanging Rock.
The teams:
Gwen and Courtney
Heather and Cody
Alejandro and Noah (for maximum drama), and
Owen and Duncan
Shenanigans ensue.

So I’m working on my re-write, and I’ve kinda been tossing around this idea of some of the older flock member having taught themselves to play an instrument and/or sing so they can busk and have a way to get a little bit of money, coz the books never really explained how they got food or money and that always kinda bugged me.
Like, they try not to do it often so they don’t attract attention, and they maybe wear disguises, like wigs and big sunglasses? Idk, I haven’t fully figured it out yet, it’s just something I’m think about.

Happy Pride Month, lovers and haters of Maximum Ride!
I promised I'd talk a bit more about my rewrite by revealing which members of the flock are LGBTQ+, and now that I've finally finished fixed Chapter 7, now's as good a time as any.
This will be spoilers for stuff I've planned further into the future (as in: most of this is only really relevant from book 2 onwards). This also isn't all the LGBTQ+ characters I have. There's a couple of OCs (and a handful of stolen James Patterson characters). Might talk about them later, might not. Who knows.
Characters are below the cut!
Alright, we're all clear on spoilers? (though I guess it doesn't matter in the case of a rewrite with no confirmed release date lol)
Then, in a semi-particular order, let's start with...
Nudge!
Tumblr media
Using a new picrew for all of these. Link can be found here: https://picrew.me/ja/image_maker/626197
Nudge is pansexual, which tbh is the headcanon I've had for her for years now, so this doesn't feel like much of a change. I should note here that she - along with the other members of the flock, minus one exception - don't technically use the terms I'm using here to describe their sexuality, for one reason or another.
For Nudge, it's because she doesn't discover any words for describing her experience other than "gay" for a while, and she doesn't really like calling herself "gay" since she doesn't feel like the term fits her.
She doesn't have any romantic relationships, but she does have a crush, and gets incredibly shy and embarrassed about it.
Iggy!
Tumblr media
Iggy is, by definition, gay. However, Iggy doesn't particularly like the term "gay". He usually either uses "queer" or just goes unlabeled.
Iggy is also the only character that I have a planned romantic relationship, and it's with a stolen James Patterson character! Place your bets everyone! It's not gonna be who you think it is!
Both Iggy and Nudge are already out by the time book 1 starts. These next two come out after a bit of self-discovery during book 2.
Max!
Tumblr media
Maximum Ride is aromantic, realizing this after 14 years of living when she's finally confronted with other people her age and realizes that dating and romance are in fact real things people want to do and not something made up for television.
I haven't decided whether or not she's asexual as well. Feel free to headcanon that, or whatever you want. I'm leaving it up to interpretation.
Of course, Max isn't going to be having any romance, considering she is the last person in the flock who'd want that.
And finally, the last member of the flock, and the only trans member......
...oh come on, like you don't know who I'm talking about.
Fang!
Tumblr media
So yeah, I've fallen victim to the nonbinary/trans Fang agenda, and I'm here to make all of you join as well.
To keep things simple, and not spoil all of my Fang Development Plans, here's a basic summary of Fang's pronouns book-by-book.
Book 1: he/him
Book 2: he/they
Book 3: they/he, but in the "Only people very close to me get to call me 'he', everyone else has to use 'they' or I'll kill them" sort of way
Should also note: the flock as a whole is not even aware of the concept of being trans or the fact that people can be something other than male or female until book 2. Finding out helps Fang start questioning their gender.
That about wraps it up. Sorry if this is underwhelming, I never know what I do or don't want to say regarding spoilers. The only two flock members who aren't included on this list are Gazzy and Angel, but that's really just because they're very tiny children and I was thinking less about who they might have a crush on and more about the brand new childhood trauma they'll be getting and living with for a very long time.

10, 11, 19, 20 for the ask game :)
10. Ooh, this one's hard. While I'm not satisfied with most of what I've written and plan on rewriting a lot of my work, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have favorites. My current favorite piece is untitled, and is the aftermath of Theo, our poor whumpee, being released back into the world by his whumper, Z, and the trauma he's suffering from after the 2 years of abuse, manipulation and pain Z forced him to undergo, and his recovery, with the help of his boyfriend, Lynn, who's been searching for him ceaselessly since he disappeared. I'm actually currently working on a rewrite for a part of this that I may share soon!
11. Agh. There's not really anything I'm comfortable sharing, but this'll have to do. It's not great, but one of the few scenes that's more than a sentence or two that I think is okay.
Z ran his hands across Theo’s hips, up his stomach, his fingers playing across the scars and fresh wounds on his chest, before coming to rest on Theo’s neck. Theo gasped as Z wrapped his fingers around his throat, struggling to get one final breath in as his hands closed tight, crushing his windpipe. Theo’s hands flew to his neck, scrabbling at Z’s, trying to pry them off, but found no purchase. As panic began to set in, Theo hammered and scratched at Z’s chest, but his efforts grew weaker as his vision faded, his mind going blank, running out of oxygen. The last thing Theo saw before he blacked out was Z’s hungry, intense smile, looming over him.
19. Funnily enough, I started writing whump last February, so I haven't been part of the community for very long at all. Despite how fresh I am, however, I've fallen in love with both the community and my writings, even though most of them are pretty bad lol.
20. I actually haven't written whump for any fandom yet. So far, I've written exclusively about OCs. While OCs are, in my eyes, tougher to start with, due to having to construct a character from scratch, I prefer the versatility and freedom you have with an OC compared to a pre-existing, developed character. I have much less obligations and pre-existing tropes and characteristics to follow with characters of my own creation, making the process easier for me. That being said, I have been considering writing about some specific characters in some fandoms. I'd probably write about R. Daneel Olivaw, from part of the Lije Bailey series by Isaac Asimov. From the first story I read about him, I was in love with a robot so complex as he was, to be essentially human, and I've recently been thinking about all of the whump you can do there. I've also been considering whumping Erasmus from the Dune prequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson, but I think that's just due to my obsession with his character as a whole. Lastly, there are so many characters in the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson that are ripe for whumping, and considering this was the series that spawned my love for wing whump before I ever knew what whump was, it'd be remiss if I didn't whump at least one character from the series.
Thanks for the ask, @stalecabbage! <3

If you were to rewrite the Maximum Ride books, what would you do differently? Also I remember loving the first 3 books when I was 14 and then reading more in the series before thinking holy shit this is bad
first off, only rewriting the first three books bc you're right, there's no saving the rest of them.
i actually like angel being the (secret) main antagonist, not in a "creepy horror movie kid" way that the books seemed to be doing, but in a "you tortured this kid's family and gave her the powers of a god, are you really wondering why she's so fucked up?" as the story progresses she gets more powerful, but she also slowly starts losing herself. she gets saved at the end with the power of love or smth tho bc she wasn't really evil, just scared, and also Family
speaking of (found) family, that's like the one thing everyone agrees it actually does right. i don't know if they should be test-tube babies or "our parents were shitty and sold us to the government", but there's definitely an overarching arc where they're trying to find their "real" families and realize it was right there the whole time. either way dr. martinez is no longer max's bio mom bc 1) that kinda negates the "family doesn't have to be blood related" theme and 2) that was one HELL of a coincidence
no more random powers that pop up when it's convenient and are never mentioned again. how is nudge able to get into that computer in the first book? easy, she just knows how to hack things.
make ari stay dead after his second death (or at least after max actually bonds with him a little and shows him how to write his name), his death might actually have an impact that way
total can stay but he's on thin fucking ice. we're not letting him talk though.
i'll be honest i think there were three different ghostwriters and none of them were on the same page for what the plot was, but imo the school/itex should've been like "well our very official scientific research shows that climate change is going to irreversibly make the planet uninhabitable soon, instead of trying to fix it let's just see if we can make new specimens that can actually survive it". something something corporate greed destroying the earth something something "we didn't want to do anything ourselves so congrats kid, you're the chosen one!" something something "hey isn't this literally just eugenics *cut to iggy looking at the camera like in the office*"
minor thing but make the e-shaped house more obviously self-sustainable. like a vegetable garden and chicken coop and stuff. were they really just going downtown every time they needed groceries?
