Someone mentioned in the notes on one of my posts recently that they wanted to see more blue collar Barbie careers: something outside of Barbie's niche, which is predominately white collar careers that have some kind of higher education as a pre-requisite.

It is true that this is an area where Barbie is lacking: where blue collar is defined as work in a manual labour or skilled trades space, there are really only two Barbie releases that come to mind that fit this brief.

Barbie Builder playset, from 2017, and Barbie Dream Careers from 2020, which featured construction worker as one of many options.

These outfits appear to be virtually identical, if not actually identical.

There are a number of reasons this might be; one being that Barbie, for all the efforts to address this over the years, is still a very feminine figure and blue collar work may not be seen as the most appealing to the young girls who are the primary target audience. The other is that Barbie releases are very often highly aspirational, and blue collar work tends not to be perceived that way, especially by children.

I am inclined to believe the latter more than the former, as while Barbie has only been a blue collar worker twice (maybe a couple more if you expand your definition of blue collar a little), her boyfriend Ken has been a blue collar worker (by this same definition) a total of zero times.

Her little sister Chelsea has, though.

With a once again nigh identical set.

I mentioned a few times above the definition of blue collar being a key factor, though -- many definitions of blue collar include retail. And it's true that most retail-based playsets show Barbie going shopping.

But there have been Barbies and her friends and family doing various retail positions, from what appears to be a Claire's...

...to food service (at McDonalds - among a variety of other bakeries, food trucks and cafes.)

Best I can do is 4000 terracotta ronald McDonalds outside of each location.

mcdonalds would be better if every store had a perfect replica of the complete terracotta army
