What we currently know as the College for Creative Studies was founded as the Detroit Society of Arts & Crafts in 1906 by a group of leaders in the arts inspired by the English Arts & Crafts Movement. The current building was designed by Minoru Yamasaki, and it bears his unmistakable touch. The steel and glass building is surrounded by a wall made of red perforated brick, which acted to blend in with the surroundings at the time and shield occupants from the noise of the bustling streets nearby. In 1975, the Detroit Society of Arts & Crafts became CCS.
The Arts & Crafts Building, or Yamasaki Building, as it is known today, is one of a trifecta of Yama designs completed in 1958 - the McGregor Memorial Conference Center on Wayne State’s campus and the former American Concrete Institute Building on West Seven Mile being the others. #Detroit #CulturalCenter #MidtownDetroit #CCSDetroit #CurtainWall #Modernism #MinoruYamasaki #archi_ologie #MidModMondays #ModMondayz #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter

Henry Cejudo Announces Retirement after TKO vs. Dominick Cruz Match
Clearly, Henry Cejudo, a two-weight UFC champion and an ex-Olympic gold medalist wrestler, is out on top. For the first time on Saturday night, Henry Cejudo (16-2) defended his 135-pound title as he finished Dominick Cruz (22-3) at 4 minutes, 58 seconds of the second round at UFC 249 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. The 33-year-old shocked the world of mixed martial arts moments later when he announced he has no intention of fighting again. Henry Cejudo said, "I'm happy with my career, I've done enough in the sport. I want to walk away and enjoy myself. I'm 33 years old. I have a girl now, watching me from back home. Since I was 11, I've sacrificed my life to get to where I was tonight. I'm retiring tonight. Uncle Dana , thank you. Everybody here, thank you so much."
Tumblr media
White appeared later Saturday on Sports Center and said he was not shocked by Cejudo's announcement. He said, "It really didn't shock me, Henry Cejudo has been talking about retirement to us for months. I'm of the belief that if you're talking about retirement in the fight business, you should probably retire." Before entering the cage Cejudo called himself the greatest all-time combat-sports athlete. His only two MMA defeats came to Demetrious Johnson, UFC's longest-running flyweight champion, and Joseph Benavidez. Two years after the first encounter Cejudo avenged his defeat to Johnson. If this happens to be the last appearance of Henry Cejudo, then it was an amazing one. Cruz, 35, had not fought for injury in 1,226 days but he was still generally regarded as the greatest bantamweight ever. Eric Albarracin, a long-time head coach of Cejudo, told ESPN that he believed that Cejudo was still "in his prime." "I only think he's getting better. It's a somber moment, when someone retires in his prime," Albarracin said. "I understand it, though. We've been on a hell of a run. I've been with him since 2004. He's gotten it done -- every goal we've ever set, he's accomplished. He's beaten every legend they set in front of him." Albarracin said "there was something a little bit off this week" with Cejudo. "I was trying to figure it out, but I couldn't put my finger on it," Albarracin said. "I was ready to have him call out Jose Aldo, Alex Volkanovski and Conor McGregor after this fight, and he told me no. I think if Dana White were to add another zero to his paycheck, he'd have a hard time not coming back, but maybe he just does want to move on." Cejudo appeared to echo Albarracin's point, saying at his postfight news conference, "I really do want to walk away, but money talks." The second-round result came after Cruz was injured badly with a right knee to the temple by Cejudo. Cejudo immediately pounced upon him, dropping a strong right hand and a succession of unanswered left hands before the bout was halted by referee Keith Peterson. It is Cruz's first loss in 15 years of professional career. "I'm ruthless," Cejudo said. "I may be cringey, corny -- but boy, can I fight.” Cruz was quick to protest the stoppage, as it seemed when the referee stepped in he was trying to work his way to his feet. However, he was clearly badly hurt and his back was to Cejudo, as he was using the cage to help him regain his balance. Afterwards, Cruz mentioned that he asked Peterson to give him leeway in case that happened. Cruz said, "I'm not happy with the stoppage, obviously, I specifically asked the ref to let me go until I was out. If I stayed on the floor, fine. But I was working my way up. "Hat's off to Henry. I shouldn't have gotten caught by that knee, which is what put me in that position. But I was standing up." Until the stoppage, it was a competitive battle, although Cejudo seemed to get the upper hand. He effectively targeted Cruz's legs with kicks, and landed the two's harder shots. Only seconds before the finish, the two heads collided, resulting in a hairline cut similar to Cejudo's. But he was obviously not affected by the accident, as he landed the knee quickly after restart. ESPN entering this weekend ranked Cejudo the world's No. 3 pound-for-pound boxer. McGregor Memorial Conference Center 495 Ferry | Constructed: 1958 | Two Stories: 27,256 ft2 Re-opened 2013 when this photograph was taken and was designated an historic landmark in 2015. "Constructed in 1958, the McGregor Memorial Conference Center was the first component of Minoru Yamasaki’s substantial body of work for Detroit’s Wayne State University. Financed by the McGregor Foundation, the building was a gift to Wayne State University for use as a community conference center. Located on the east end of the WSU campus, the McGregor Memorial Conference Center is built on a platform raised several steps above street level and overlooks a sculpture court with shallow L- shaped concrete pool and sculpture court featuring four free-standing sculptures. The two-story steel-frame and concrete folded slab Modernist building designed in the International style and marked the beginning of Yamasaki’s national and eventually international reputation as an architect." —http://yamasaki.wayne.edu/mcgregor.html #architecture #midcenturyarchitecture #detroit https://www.instagram.com/p/ByJHKYknOKd/?igshid=1ty1f60zm88vn

Sunday, March 26, 10 AM – Noon,  McGregor Memorial Conference Center, Wayne State University Join Workers World Party in Detroit, Michigan along with other Midwest WWP branches for a fightback conference on the resistance against racism and capitalism, and the struggle for socialism where we’ll discuss: *Ending the police war on Black & Brown people & defending the Black Lives Matter movement *Stopping the raids & deportations & disarming ICE & the police *Defending queer and trans people, fighting for LGBTQ liberation now *Fighting imperialism from Syria to Africa, for a free Palestine, and building international solidarity *Abolishing capitalism and fighting for revolutionary socialism *The struggle in the Midwest against powerful reactionary state apparatuses and a direct ruling class offensive *The economic, political, and social war waged against Detroit, a former stronghold of workers power and black liberation *Combating the emboldened right wing and rising fascist movement Racist police repression, raids and deportations, and the attacks on working class and oppressed people cannot be ended, once and for all, until the decaying capitalist system, which is becoming more and more desperately dependent on state repression, is ended. Capitalism must be replaced with a system that is based on meeting human needs, not exploitation to make profits: socialism. These and other pressing struggles of the day -- along with the experiences, observations, and questions of those in attendance -- will be the basis of the conference. Meryl Streep’s Underrated and Overrated Movies
Meryl Streep is one of the great American actresses. She is known for her versatility and accents. Streep was nominated for 21 Academy Awards and won three among them. Meryl Streep started her career in 1975 at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference. During that period, she acted in five plays over six weeks. She then moved to New York City and was cast by Joseph Papp in 1975 for the production of Trelawny of the Wells. Streep appeared in 1976 double bill of Tennessee Williams’ 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and Arthur Miller’s A Memory of Two Mondays. Streep had also received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress for a play. There are some movies in her career that have not been appreciated for their fantastic content. In this article, we will talk about some of her overrated and underrated films, according to IMDB ratings.
Doubt (2008)- Underrated
Doubt is an American drama film directed and written by John Patrick Shanley. The movie was based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play Doubt: A Parable. The movie did a box office collection of gross $50.9 million. It received positive reviews from critics. The film cast some talented actors such as Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Meryl Steep, and Viola Davis. The movie’s plot centered around the nun (played by Streep) at a Catholic school, who started to suspect something sinister about the new priest (played by the very talented Hoffman). The film got 80% approval on the Rotten Tomatoes based on 216 reviews. Doubt was also nominated for the Oscars. But despite such a beautiful story, the movie seems to have been forgotten.
Kramer Vs. Kramer (1979)-Underrated
Kramer vs. Kramer made the talented Meryl Streep a legitimate star. In the movie, she played the character of the wife of a working man (played by Dustin Hoffman). The story surrounded a couple and their divorce. And the impact of the divorce on their young son. It also shows the subsequent evolution of their relationship and views on parenting. The film explores the fallout of divorce, psychology, and emerging social issues such as gender roles, work-life balance, single parents, and women’s rights. Kramer vs. Kramer released on 19th December 1979 by Columbia Pictures. It did a significant commercial business of $106.3 million and became the year’s highest-grossing film. It also received nine Oscar nominations at 52nd Academy Awards. It won five of them as Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. Although the movie felt one-sided, the attempts to make Streep’s character an unreasonable villain were misguided.
Death Becomes Her (1992)- Overrated
Death Becomes Her is an American dark comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Martin Donovan and David Koepp. The film revolved around a pair of rivals (played by Streep and Goldie Hawn), who drank a magical potion that provided eternal youth. But after having the potion, they experienced unpleasant side effects. The movie received a mixed response from the box office as well as from critics. Death Becomes Her was an over the top film, and also an enjoyable one. It collected $149 million worldwide and won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The film has developed an influential cult classic, especially among the LGBT community.
The Post (2017)-Underrated
The Post is an American historical political thriller film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie is based on a true story by journalists at “The Washington Post” to publish the infamous “Pentagon Papers”. The papers were regarding the involvement in the Vietnam War by the United States government. The movie was spectacular, and Meryl Streep was amazing. The film was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture. It also got 88% approval on Rotten Tomatoes based on 387 reviews. Although it felt basic and it has nothing new to offer.
The Manchurian Candidate (2004)-Overrated
The Manchurian Candidate can be remarking as a classic with many talented performers. The movie also retells the political thriller story of an organization that brainwashed a candidate for the U.S. President, and Streep played the role of the mother. The movie was based on a novel of the same name by Richard Condon. The film did a business of $96,105,964 worldwide. On Rotten Tomatoes it got 80% ratings based on 207 reviews. This remake was exciting to watch, and it also told a tense tale. Streep in the role of the villain was outstanding, and Denzel Washington gave a stirring performance.
August: Osage County (2013)-Underrated
August: Osage County has some incredible cast with leading Streep, Julia Roberts, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Ewan McGregor. The movie surrounds a dysfunctional family that came to attend a family funeral. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 9th September 2013 and released in the United States on 27th December 2013. The film received mixed reviews from critics. But the cast was praised by all. However, the screenplay was too dark for some. The film did a $179,475 box office collection and was released on 1st January 2014 in Australia. However, some feel the Streep’s performance is a little cartoonish.
Defending Your Life (1991)-Overrated
Defending Your Life was a great movie. In the cast, Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep were fantastic performers. It was an American romantic-comedy-fantasy film about a man who died and arrived in the afterlife. Albert Brooks wrote the film, directed it, and also acted on it. The film received fantastic positive reviews from critics and got a 97% rating from Rotten Tomatoes based on 32 reviews. It was an incredibly authentic story with humor, but the movie slipped through the cracks with audiences.
Meryl Streep is one of the A-grade actresses of Hollywood. She has impressed and inspired us with her many performances. And we love to watch her on the big screens. The above are the overrated and underrated movies for her career. I hope you enjoyed the article.
