She remembered when he had vanished without a trace and it was not long after that poor Emily had been found with Havlock not long behind. She had brought forth the pages, the audiograph cards. She had cleared the name of a butcher. No one questioned her as the Empress but there were talks of forgery.

     Why forge lies when the truth was far stranger?

     “You left behind quite the mess you know, the Empire is in utter shambles. Was. I’ve been trying to fix it.” Finally she turned around and crossed her arms over her chest and a frown pulled at her lips. “So tell me, why have you come? Did the news of little rat sitting on the throne draw you back? Or did the dead decide to give you a good hard tug by the throat?”

The concept of peace was not the same for a human and a god. As the Outsider watched Corvo’s life ease with his daughter’s adulthood and coronation, it was clear that the man slept. He was no longer tireless, no longer as haunted- but peace was a fickle thing. The deity could see the rifts that shaped the future as it approaches from a great distance, forming a thick, ominous cloud, housing a perfect storm. His fingers steeple the night before the late empress’ death anniversary as he considered the greying male. The future was going to leave many questions, a hydra providing minimal answers. There was little reason to forewarn him for he knew the elder’s shoulders would become a little tenser, his back a little straighter as day light approaches.  As the events played as he foresaw it, boring down upon his arbiter - he did the one thing he eagerly awaited for, opening the plateau between the wakeful plan and the void to let him in.

    — “ You’ve been kept busy. “  He mused in greeting, pieces of him forming his visage right before the elder to welcome him back to his domain. “ Even as you are granted the gift of sleep, something forebodes the day. The crown killer is said to be a benevolent figure, one who’s identity is split, unaware of the other. Who would that be? “ He was almost taunting him, jesting as he circles him.

Emily stood gaping from the back door of her bloodied throne room. She stood in her pajamas, dark messy hair contrasting her light silken gown. In the dark, it was hard to distinguish one thing from another. Very few lights had been turned on, but in the settling air she could see her father’s familiar figure, tall and strong with an air of levity. His sword was held in his hand and the metallic stench of blood reached her nostrils before his voice did-and it echoed like a deep, distant thunder in the silence. 

She raised her eyes to it, but remained where she was. Gripping the doorway like a child with the strong hand of a woman. A hand that had it’s share of death dealing and bloodshed-one way or another. It is said that the pen is mightier than the sword, and from the perspective of an Empress that can be put to the test. With the scratch of a pen, a simple signature, Emily Kaldwin had ordered men and women to death-criminals, but some of their stories had  yet to be proven fact or fiction. She had ordered revolutions and insurrections put down by forces of her own, all following her orders and hanging on to every word. She gave them hope-but only the men who held the swords and guns to other’s heads. 

But now, and not for the first time, death was all too close to home. It was on her doorstep and at her feet. Not done by her hand, but by the only man who could control it. The Royal Protector, Corvo Attano. Her father. 

Her voice was hardly a comparison to his in the quiet space. “What have you done?”

“You’re tough. But I’ll break you.” (mechxnicxl-hexrt; HC; DH2)

Emily smiled under the mask. She straightened her posture and lowered her sword to her side where it hung loosely, useless and casual. So the bodyguard could take a hint. Corvo was far from stupid, she knew. He was a clever man and very much so. There was no other in her empire that came to mind when she considered who else could possibly handle the responsibility and need for sharp, quick wit that came with being the Royal Spymaster as well as Royal Protector. However, there were times that Corvo was so immersed in what he was doing that Emily’s prodding jokes and dry humor and adventurous suggestions went straight over the man’s head or he cast them aside entirely. 

Always so busy. But the night was young. They still had time, and the Empress was elated at the prospect that Corvo was beginning to realize the same thing. 

She sauntered over to him with a careless, flirtatious gait. She stood straight and tall when she came to stand toe to toe with the Masked Felon. “I doubt that, father. But I’d like to see you try.”

There was a certain laze about her actions and it could be acclaimed to many reasons, enough to fill the night but she had already made it clear that, that was not her intention. In fact his lack of movement to do as she wished left her in a small fuss of annoyance before that was deemed too costly for her energy.

Elbow propped up, she leaned her head into her hand and waited quietly for as long as she could, which in reality was only the breath of the moment. “At this rate, we’re going to die before you even move to open it, Corvo.”

█ ▌He could hear concern in the rasp of Corvo’s voice, laced with just a touch of rage. The famous rage that had brought a city to its knees. The Outsider enjoyed watching it spread like the rat plague and devour like the swarms. It consumed everything it touched, and oh, was it a beautiful sight to behold.

“Oh Corvo.. My dear Corvo.” There was something tired in his voice, though you’d have to scratch the surface to see it. And scratch Corvo always did. This one had always been strong-willed and sentimental. He liked that about him. 

He wouldn’t say it, though. The name was lodged in his throat like a stubborn pill. “Do you really need to ask?”

17.Clap the ears

It was something her mind and her hands stalled at. Corvo’s both came up faster than she expected and his large, open palms collided with her ears. There was a cloud pop, it seemed. A hollow clap and the world was ringing. The sides of her head already stared to ache as she stumbled backwards and forced herself to focus again. Already that night, Emily had received a bloody nose from her father, minus all the aches and bruises she would soon be feeling. The Royal Protector moved quickly. He was smart, and he had raised his daughter to do the same. 

Only Emily wasn’t on top of her game that night.

She deflected the next punch, twisting her arm in a circle around his to both block and immobilize. Her hand clawed at the fabric of his shirt as she tried to get a good grip, but her father was already pulling away and his foot came up to meet her stomach. It knocked her back as well as knocking the wind out of her. Emily remained hunched over, hands on her knees while she tried to catch her breath. The Empress sniffed and held a hand to her nose. 

“Can we call a time out?” she asked nasally. “My ears are ringing.”

His musing caused the blonde to roll her eyes; he must’ve thought himself a philosopher for she thought him a fool. Unfortunately for him sooner, and her later, she’d take the opportunity to judge each and every word.

“It’s shameful, you allowed your standards to rise above what you once must have known.” A sideways glance was thrown in his direction, before she rolled her eyes. “How long have expensive perfumes and palace gates clouded your judgment?”
