Steve Rogers and School Lunches

So I've been doing some research on food during the Great Depression and what I discovered is that school lunches became a big movement in New York in 1930. So it is very likely that Steve and Bucky would have eaten a school lunch during the depression.

The menu was created by the director of homemaking for the New York school system, Martha Westfall.

This is one of the four rotating menus she created.

For some struggling families, this was the only meal their kids would get a day, or it would help stretch the food at home. These school lunches were free.

In schools that had no kitchens "stoves were installed in basements or gymnasiums. Lunch counters were created from wooden planks supported by old desks, the surfaces covered in brightly covered oilcloth" (A Square Meal: A Culinary History of the Great Depression by Jane Ziegleman and Andrew Coe, p. 78-79).

Milk was believed to be very important in one's diet, so it was in every meal, and half a pint was served with each meal to drink.

I’m really disappointed in Peter Jackson for his involvement in the Middle-earth Cinematic Universe (MECU). I don’t think I should be surprised given everything about the Hobbit films (not just the final product but the questionable labor laws and Ian McKellen’s emotional breakdown over the working conditions), but for some reason I am a little surprised. He doesn’t seem to care about respecting the source material anymore. He just cares about making money.

My Other Conlang

I've talked about Léna and Kkeṛhaqom on this blog, but never mentioned my most fleshed-out conlang, Rhodian. You can read all about it here but in short, it's a fictional Romance language heavily influenced by Doric Greek.

Anyway, I've been translating my favourite novel, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet into it, and this has been my favourite paragraph so far. The first paragraph of chapter 2 is as follows:

Translation: Living in space was anything but quiet. Grounders never expected that. For anyone who had grown up planetside, it took some time to get used to the clicks and hums of a ship, the ever-present ambiance that came with living inside a piece of machinery. But to Ashby, those sounds were as ordinary as his own heartbeat. He could tell when it was time to wake by the sigh of the air filter over his bed. When rocks hit the outer hull with their familiar pattering, he knew which were small enough to ignore, and which meant trouble. "HEAVY SENTENCE AT PERTH ASSIZES," Ottawa Citizen. October 24, 1913. Page 2. --- Mr. Justice Kelly Sends a Man to Penitentiary for 10 Years. --- (Special to The Citizen.) Perth, Oct. 24. - The Lanark assize which opened before Mr. Justice Kelly on Today came to a close last evening. Two civil cases and a criminal case comprised the docket.

The first civil jury case on the docket for trial was one in which Mrs. Henry Hadson said her husband sued the Smith Falls Electric Power Company, Limited, for damages for injuries claimed to be the result of Mrs. Hudson coming in contact with a broken electric live wire lying across the Pavement on a street in Smith's Falls This case was heard at the assizes a year ago, when plaintiffs received a Verdict for damages. The case being appealed a retrial was ordered. By arrangement this case has been transferred to Oltawa for trial.

Tacker vs. Ottawa Bank was a casе which occupied the court for over a day. Mr. Tucker, a farmer residing at Montague, sued the Bank of Ottawa for $150,000 damages to his credit, character and business through alleged wrongful interference with plaintiff' account, and neglecting or refusing to pay over to plaintiff the proceeds or part thereof of a promissory note discounted for $1,000 as agreed. The $150,000 claim was made up thus: $68,000 for damage to credit, $60,000 to character, and $30,000 to business. Plaintiff claims that the bank's action forced him into insolvency and ruined him financially. The defence was practically a denial of plaintiff's claims. After all the evidence was in and a vigorous argument by counsel for each side. Mr. Justice Kelly held that the plaintiff had failed to establish his claim and gave Judgment dismissing the action, with costs against the plaintiff. G F. Henderson, K.C, of Ottawa and Wilson Mecue, Smith Fails, appeared for the plaintiff, and G. H. Watson, K.C., Toronto, and J A. Stewart, Perth, for the defendant bank.

Lawrence Larocque was charged with an offence against Lettie Majore, both of Darling. Larocque is but nineteen, while the girl is only sixteen. The Jury found Laroque guilty and his lordship sentenced him to ten years in Kingston Penitentiary. H. A. Lavell of Smith's Falls, prosecuted, and C. J. Fox of Perth, defended.

[Laroque was indeed 19, a farm labourer, with no previous record. He was convict #F-672 at Kingston Penitentiary and worked on the farm. He was never reported and was paroled in May 1916.]
