Historical Mermay prompt 4: French Medieval Mermaid
I was stumped for a while on the direction for this one. French Medieval sounds more broad than it probably is. Either way I eventually picked up on the repetition of blonde women in blue Houppelandes and decided to try it out for myself. Making sure to have long decorative sleeves, and of course (I can never resist) a whole lot of princess hair.

Originally I wasn’t going to draw Dorathea’s human form but thought it’d be nice to reimagine it too. I’m sure you’ve noticed the absence of the Amulet of Aragon too because this is a depiction of the one night she didn’t wear it. She wanted to go to the Princess Costume Ball so badly once she finally came of age but her mean mummy wouldn’t let her. And that’s either because she was jealous or wanted to protect her foolish daughter from an assassination attempt someone was plotting that night, who can say.
Sadly, given how Dorathea is now a ghost you can probably guess the results...
Still, what a night it would have been! Her costume is extremely subtle since the delicate pattern is meant to look like dragon scales, aka a golden dragon like their family crest. Prince Aragon of course was against his sister going mostly because he didn’t think any of the potential suitors attending were worthy of the princess’s hand. Not to mention he planned to brutally assassinate the assassin after her because that’s just the way he is! Overprotective evil older brother ftw!

"He will come to death, an image of the splendour of the kings of men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world. But you, my daughter, you will linger on in darkness and in doubt, as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Here you will dwell, bound to your grief, under the fading trees, until all the world is changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent." Elrond, "The Lord of the Rings.
I made this gorgeous black cotton velvet costume circa 2012. It was one of the first whole outfits I handmade... One of the pioneer projects that got me started in the making of costumes and accessories for others! The longest hours I spent embroidering the silver metallic leaves and glass flowers on the steel boned corset. Totally worth it! ✨

I was a medieval princess and I had a French tennis instructor named Corset, but he insisted it was pronounced “Core-SAY”.

Maleficent
It’s been a long time coming but it feels so good to finally redesign these iconic villains! Maleficent was a little bit of a challenge… and yet very little changed. And I know, I know, I didn’t keep her horns…. But I was really struggling to draw the pointy medieval headdresses so I went with this one instead. There are historically inspired costumers that have come before me for Maleficent in a houppeland so the content is out there if you're interested!

"You're always working so hard," the princess told the knight, lower lip sticking out playfully. He offered her a brief glance, but still stood at attention. "I'm working to protect you," he answered, voice low so he wouldn't get into any trouble for talking when he wasn't meant to be. She grabbed ahold of his hand, his armor clanging at the motion. "Come and protect me from upstairs."
"I don't want you to go," the princess pleaded. "If you don't return..." The knight was quick to interrupt her. He couldn't bear to think about what would become of her if he did not come back. "I will always return to you, my love."
"Let's run away." The princess's breath hitched. "Let's run away from this dreaded place and make a life for ourselves that is entirely our own. No kings, no duties, no forbidden kisses, no sneaking around after dark. Just us."
There was a tap at the princess's window. Soft, yet still hard with intent. She pulled herself from the bed and gently opened the window, unlatching the little lock that kept it closed. Her knight was perched below the windowsill, having used the strong vines to scale the palace wall. "Hello, Princess."
