Maleficent

It’s been a long time coming but it feels so good to finally redesign these iconic villains! Maleficent was a little bit of a challenge… and yet very little changed. And I know, I know, I didn’t keep her horns…. But I was really struggling to draw the pointy medieval headdresses so I went with this one instead. There are historically inspired costumers that have come before me for Maleficent in a houppeland so the content is out there if you're interested!

Originally I wasn’t going to draw Dorathea’s human form but thought it’d be nice to reimagine it too. I’m sure you’ve noticed the absence of the Amulet of Aragon too because this is a depiction of the one night she didn’t wear it. She wanted to go to the Princess Costume Ball so badly once she finally came of age but her mean mummy wouldn’t let her. And that’s either because she was jealous or wanted to protect her foolish daughter from an assassination attempt someone was plotting that night, who can say.

Sadly, given how Dorathea is now a ghost you can probably guess the results...

Still, what a night it would have been! Her costume is extremely subtle since the delicate pattern is meant to look like dragon scales, aka a golden dragon like their family crest. Prince Aragon of course was against his sister going mostly because he didn’t think any of the potential suitors attending were worthy of the princess’s hand. Not to mention he planned to brutally assassinate the assassin after her because that’s just the way he is! Overprotective evil older brother ftw!

Medieval Princess II

As I moved into 2022 I decided that I needed to keep a balance between work, family, writing and art while making sure that I kept up with everything so I went back to my ‘projects list’ and thought that I should start doing some things for myself.  Returning to a theme for my sister’s landmark birthday, time to do a proper portrait of the medieval princess. Loved doing this piece although I did blur away most of the background for the right side. This was awarded a Daily Deviation on DeviantArt which was a nice surprise.

Isabella of Valois, Duchess of Bourbon

Or… at least a medieval lady based on an image of her. The princess hair is as ever… something I can’t help myself from including.

Isabella (1313 – 26 July 1383) was the Duchess Consort of Bourbon from 1336-1356, after her husband died she "took the veil" (aka became a nun). And this illustration is based off an image of her (supposedly - it's one of those things where I found the image inspiring first and then looked up who it's apparently of so grain of salt as per usual). I had quite a bit of fun with this one, and now that tiktok is recommending costume breakdowns of HoD... it's got the gears starting to turn. BUT I have something else I've started so I have to do that first and see how they do.

Medieval Princess

A special birthday gift for my sister’s landmark birthday. A portrait of her as a medieval princess. As an added surprise I had the dress in the picture made for her in deep purple velvet with gold trim by a friend who worked for the Riyal Shakespeare Company. She looked amazing!
