“did you get it?”
“get what?”
“my gift! that’s why i called you dummy,” you say as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. megumi can’t help but smile to himself, basking in the impatience that coats your dulcet voice as rattles down the line. “i want you to open it while we’re on the phone together.”
a box had arrived for megumi fushiguro this morning, february fourteenth, at the precise time of eight am. the time he usually wakes up to start his day. gojo had brought him the box with a teasing smile, graciously reminding his junior of the note on top — written by your hand with a glitter pen and stuck to the box with pink washi tape.
‘do not open until tonight.’ it had read.
with the distance between you both, tonight would mean the morning for you — and though it wasn’t ideal, it was the only way yourself and megumi would be able to spend Valentine’s Day together. you were studying abroad for a year, leaving your boyfriend behind and despite the tears and shifty internet connection — you’d made it work so far.
just that this year, you wouldn’t be there in person to give your broody, moody boyfriend his valentine.
so you settle with an early-morning-late-night phone call, where you can listen to megumi open your present to him after escaping the clutches of gojo for the day.
“you’re sweet, you know that?” megumi tells you, quiet but earnest, tucking the phone between his shoulder and his ear to keep it steady. his large hands and slender fingers dance over the taped edge of the cardboard box at the centre of his bed  — finding that little uptick of plastic to rip at and pull the whole thing open. “what is it?”
you scoff on the other end, the sound sends shivers down megumi’s spine. he misses you. “just open it dummy, then you’ll find out.”
pushing his tongue into his cheek, he laughs airly into the phone and your heart rate quickens in response. “watch your mouth,” the man warns you softly, with no malice or trace of a threat in his voice. your giggling overlays the sound of tearing cardboard and rustling packing paper.
“or what? we both know that if i go quiet you’ll miss me way too much, megs.”
“don’t get ahead of yourself —“ megumi’s end of the line goes quiet. a comfortable static crackling through your speakers as you busy yourself with other things, waiting for his reaction to your special shipment from abroad. “i thought we said no gifts.” he deflects, bringing a fond smile to your face. as stoic as he may sound, the dark haired man is grateful that you’re not with him in person. that way you can’t see the way his face crumples and his lips fight to twitch with emotion. fushiguro isn’t the type of person to admit that he misses someone, especially you. “you didn’t have to…”
but oh does he miss you. that sense of longing hits him with the force of a tsunami, causing his knees to buckle and for him to forcefully sit down on the edge of the bed. megumi thumbs your gift to him — the very first stuffed animal he’d ever won you on one of your very first dates at the beginning of your relationship.
it’s white fluffy ears and red checked bow tie carry your scent, as if you’d held the bear tight before sending it across oceans to fushiguro. his heart lurches at the memory of you packing the little bear to take with you because you would miss your boyfriend and his closeness.
now he’s the one missing you, and that special bear has made it back to him.
“i didn’t,” you hum at the same time that megumi lays back on his bed — holding the soft toy to his chest. your voice stays low, uses gentle affectionate tones and he feels as though you’re right there with him. whispering your love into his ear while you jay beside him. “but i’ve been gone for half a year, so i figured you’d hold onto the little guy for me for the other half. you know, until i get back and you don’t have to miss me anymore.”
“you’re full of yourself,” fushiguro states, nose tucked into the white fluffy fur of your teddy bear. he inhales the scent of your sugary perfume and relaxes. “‘m pretty sure you miss me more than i miss you…but, uh, thank you.”
“thank you, megs, for waiting for me.”
megumi closes his eyes and pictures the day you get back, and the day that he can finally return the plushie to you. “there’s not long now,” he rasps just before the clock strikes midnight for him. “happy valentine’s day, baby. i…i love you.”
“happy valentine’s.” comes your doting whisper. “i love you right back.”

Unlike Jo, Amy embraces her budding womanhood, which she feels empowers rather than diminishes her. At sixteen, she has the air and bearing of a full-grown woman” and has “learned to use the gift of fascination with which she was endowed.” Although not a natural beauty like Meg, the blonde, blue-eyed Amy easily succeeds at making herself into a fashionable work of art, gaining first the attention of Laurie's college friends, then Fred Vaughn, and finally Laurie himself. It is not only with men that she succeeds, however. She wins over her fellow art school students, the mean girls at the fair, and then her aunts, one of whom takes her to Europe. Once abroad, Amy blossoms further. “Always mature for her age,” she now becomes “more of a woman of the world.” She enjoys her power over men (including Laurie) and tears around Nice in her own carriage, taking the reins herself and yelling out to Laurie in the street, her “free manners” scandalizing a French mother who hurries her young daughter in the opposite direction. Amy was the daring American girl abroad ten years before the publication of Henry James's Daisy Miller. In the end, of course, Amy wins Laurie and decides that she won't be an artist after all (because she possesses talent but not genius, something Laurie also discovers about his music). Readers often forget that Amy wants to become a famous artist because she gives it up so easily. She will become instead, as the wealthy Laurie's wife, “an ornament to society.” To many readers, Amy has seemed to be the clear winner among the four March sisters. In her New York Times essay “Amy Had Golden Curls; Jo Had a Rat. Who Would You Rather Be?” film and book critic Caryn James wrote that favoring Amy over the other girls was a "no-brainer." Pretty Amy went to Europe, had adventures, and married the dashing boy next door, while Jo lived in a dumpy boardinghouse in New York and married a boring professor. - Anne Boyd Rioux, Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story of Little Women and Why It Still Matters

Away from the roads, where buggies and carts stir up dust in their hasty journeys, the lanes and pathways of the Brindleton countryside remain wild. Quenched by recent rain, the hawthorns and witch-alders are once again green, with little red rosehips swelling on the dogrose bushes. Branches hang low overhead, brushing Kit’s head as Chestnut picks her way through the undergrowth.
He makes a habit of riding this way when he’s by himself. In the seclusion of the paths there’s little chance of meeting others — he knows they mean to be neighbourly with their greetings, but he prefers the quiet of the paths, where the only noise comes from the rustling of leaves. Chestnut requires no more conversation than the odd gentle encouragement or pat on the neck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All too soon his route emerges from the trees, into the sun of an early Autumn afternoon. The way back home passes by Bridgebend Farm, so Kit isn’t entirely surprised to see Zachariah Miller leaning against the yard fence.
“Hello, Kit.” A warm smile crinkles the corners of Zachariah’s eyes as he recognises horse and rider. “I haven’t seen you around here too much lately, though I’ve seen enough of your Meg and little Daisy. You been avoiding me, son?”
“Not at all, Zach. Just been busy, that’s all.” says Kit as he reins in Chestnut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Well, I can’t begrudge a man any hard work. How’s things up at Maple Farm?” Zachariah’s weatherbeaten brow and craggy face put Kit in mind of his father, but they’re where the comparison starts and ends. The crow’s feet at the corners of Zachariah’s eyes come from laughter, and there’s a kindly aspect to his face that means he could never be mistaken for John Calloway. Depsite that, memories surface unbidden of the cold, hardened man for whom nothing was ever good enough.
Do you think you’ll ever mean anything to me, boy? The words ring in his ears as fresh as the day they were said.
“Good enough, thank you. The wheat’s done well, and our potatoes were better than last year’s.” says Kit brightly, conscious of how long he’s been silent. No need to mention how much of the profits went into the decoration of the farmhouse. It was worth it, to see Meg smile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I’m glad to hear it. And while you’re here, I’ll let you know something that might make next year even better — there’s a Mr Allen out in Rockland who’s just started a tidy little crop export business, and I reckon if you went down to see him he’d be willing to make a deal for some of your next year’s harvest if it’s a good one. It may seem like a hassle, but selling abroad will earn you much more than only selling locally.” says Zachariah.
“If that all’s true then it’ll certainly suit us well. I can spare the time now, so I’ll be sure to head over. Much obliged, Zach.”
“You’re welcome, son. You’re doing a fine job with Maple Farm, and I don’t see why you shouldn’t profit from it.”
“I guess not.” Kit smiles ruefully. He’s pleased by Zachariah’s approval, but it’s tempered by the knowledge that if Zachariah knew what was really behind his success at Maple Farm, he may not be so liberal with his praise; the thought makes his stomach lurch. “I better be getting on now, Meg will be wondering where I’ve got to.”
“In that case, you better had be on your way.” Zachariah chuckles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zachariah’s suggestion plays over and over in Kit’s mind as he turns Chestnut down the lane to Maple Farm. It’s a good offer, a great one, even. Father Blackett might call it divine deliverance, but church has never been anything more to Kit than somewhere you go on a Sunday. But it is some sort of deliverance, a chance to do right by his family. To provide, like all good husbands and fathers should. There’s no guarantee that it will work out — but hell, what’s another risk on top of the ones he’s already taken?
The part of him where harsh voices of bygone arguments echo begins to quiet, replaced by the steady beats of Chestnut’s hooves. The yard is hardly quiet, filled with the squawks of chickens and the occasional low from Bluebell in the cow-pen, but it bring the warm feeling of coming home. A home that even closer to being fully theirs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the barn, Chestnut nickers affectionately as he rubs her down. She at least demands nothing but oats in the morning and hay in the evening, her loyalty unwavering as long as her stomach is full.
“You’ll always love me, won’t you girl?” He whispers somewhere into her nose.

button - confessing your love using your school uniform button (gn! reader)
warning: none
note: i don't like the way how i wrote this :(
Tumblr media
sakura petals decorated the streets of japan making it look like a scene of a fairy tale. the fairy tale scenario graces the graduation day of namikaze high school. the seniors shouted in joy along with a small party to celebrate their milestone. tears streamed on your friends faces as the last hugs were cherished. the last day of school was clouded by anxiety and excitement for [name].
while you were happy to end the dreadful hours of knowledge you'd most likely not use, you were also scared of losing your only friends. promises to keep in contact are made but aren’t always kept. of course, no one is to blame. everyone’s life is bound to be busier than before. [name] was the same. some of your friends are heading abroad forever while others are changing towns. none of that matters to you. you only had eyes for one person.
bachira meguru
a silly crush is what [name] would describe it. they happened to be neighbours for many years and because of that, they attended the same schools. he started off as a neighbour to a very good friend but now he stands on a hazy line. you couldn’t describe how he always made you feel special. every breathing minute is spent with him and him only. from the walk to school, lunch, gym and even the walk back home
“we finally graduated!”, bachira cheered balancing the soccer ball on his head as they walked back home
“yeah.. what are you gonna do meg?”, you asked curiously
“me? oh i haven't decided yet! i’m probably going to practise soccer more and help my mom around”, bachira said
“you?”
“i.. i also haven’t decided yet. i might consider taking culinary like dad did”, you groaned remembering the pressure your dad forced on you
should you say it now? you had been planning out perfectly and would finally confess to bachira meguru. with the help and support of your friends, you learned how to ask someone out (most of them were cringe japanese dialogues but you loved them too much to say no). the tip you got was to simply speak your heart out… but how? it frightened you. you never openly shared your opinions with anyone, let alone your feelings. bachira may be your best friend but you never had the guts to talk about how you actually feel
“meg.. i have to confess something so please take this seriously”, you stopped walking and looked down
“what’s up [name]?”, bachira stopped too and stood in front of you
“i- i like you!”, you got it out of your chest before covering your mouth
“aww i like you too [name]!”, bachira cheered
“wait, you like me too??”, you asked thinking you misheard
“mhm! you’re such a good friend! how could i not like you!”, bachira explained
you stood there listening to his explanation before facepalming. bachira didn’t really have much experience with romance and you wouldn’t blame him. was he really as dense? yes, yes he was.
“no, i mean i like you! like really really like you!”, you slowly said emphasising on ‘really’
“and i also really really like you too! friends will always like each other! i’m not gonna have a competition here!”, bachira said kicking his soccer closer to him
“meg, i want us to be more than friends”, you clarified hoping his understood
“oooh”
did he finally understand?
“so you want to be best friends! you don’t need to ask! you’re my best friend since forever!”, bachira added
“no meg, i want us to be even more than best friends”, you groaned tempted to give up
“sooo… like best neighbours? ah man then i guess mrs yamada can be my second best neighbour”, bachira said referring to the old lady next door
“i give up! you’re giving me no choice but to do this!”
your hands reached for your button blouse. reaching the second button, you quickly pulled it out and handed it to bachira, who only looked even more confused. with a red face, you walked out of the scene as fast as you could
bachira was stunned at what his friend did. are you giving him a trinket? oh no.. does this mean you’ll never see him again? were you leaving the country? forever? bachira began panicking as the thought of losing his only friend would make him cry. he reached home and ran to the person who would know everything; his mom
“mom! mom! look what [name] gave me!”, bachira shouted with teary eyes
“what’s wrong- a button?”, his mother dropped her brushes and smile
“oh my, you’re all grown up my child”, bachira’s mother gave a warm smile almost making her cry
“[name] is leaving!! see?? i got this as a trinket! mom, we have to stop [name] from leaving! i don’t want my bestfriend gone!”, bachira cried
“meguru silly, that’s the second button of her uniform”, his mother giggled at her son
“so?”, bachira asked
“so it means [name] confessed to you! she wants to be with you for the rest of your life! she doesn’t want to leave you”, bachira’s mother sighed
“so… she wants to marry me?”, bachira’s eye lit up
“uh- i guess you can interpret it that way sweetie”, his mother nervously laughed
bachira blushed looking down at the button in his palm. while you simply confessed your love to him, bachira was now thinking of the future. while he still doesn’t understand the terms of love or dating, at least you would be there with him. his best friend would be with him- or well his partner would be with him

Little Women is the clearest case of Death of the Text I have ever seen. I call Death of the Text... well, basically a reading of it that is comprised mainly of projection and vibes, no matter how much or how little those coincide with canon.
I talked about some of the plot points/characters that are treated this way earlier today, but there's another very common one: that part 1 is the golden happy one, and that the second part is gloomy and sad (this one reinforced by Greta Gerwig's adaptation).
And... no? not at all? First part? You mean the part where there was a Civil War going on? Rationing? Their father on the front, and possibly dying there? He actually does get mortally sick in it? The girls are left alone and they come to the point that no grocer will give them more credit? Because they have literally ran out of cash? And then Beth gets mortally ill while their dad is sick and their mom away from home? And all of this happens in one single year?
Even Beth's death, the saddest part of part 2, happens after a lot of closure for all her relatives (except Amy, who is abroad, poor girl) and with enough time for her to grieve too. And it is one thing in 4-5 years of narrative. Jo loses Europe, but she goes to New York. Their economic and family situation is much more stable. Amy gains independence as well. Meg and John are a realistic marriage where mutual help and mutual support and understanding lead to happiness, even if money is short sometimes? How is that The Sad Half of the story?

It makes me genuinely so confused to see people’s excitement for Nandor and Guillermo character interactions in season 5. They really feel like hollow repetitions of sweeter, more genuine character interactions already shown in earlier seasons.
Nandor has showed time and time again in seasons 1-3 that his aloofness to Guillermo is all bluster and that there is so much genuine care there. He conveys that Guillermo is a dear friend to him in the hospital when he accidentally dropped him while flying (season 1). He exasperatedly confesses how much he’s missed Guillermo after his departure for Celeste and begs him to return home (season 2). He chastises his vampire family for being rude to Guillermo, urging them to be nicer to him and include him in conversation. He solemnly explains to Guillermo how much of a curse he feels vampirism has been for him when he leaves for the Wellness Center, reiterating that he doesn’t want to cause this kind of pain in Guillermo’s life (season 3). So given all of this, it’s hard to see how any moment past season 3 has been anything but regressive for Nandor. It seems like he forgets all of that character growth situationally and returns to treating Guillermo like an insufferable burden to be around. And most weirdly of all, he no longer envisions him as a bodyguard and equal, but views him as nothing more than a lowly familiar again. And Guillermo also resumes this role as if he has completely forgotten all the progress and confidence he worked towards in the past 3 seasons.
Another point I am earnestly confused by is that it feels that season 3 establishes that Guillermo canonically has feelings for Nandor. It’s evident in the conversation he has with Meg in the Cloak of Duplication episode. And these feelings escalate throughout the season, they become problematic for him as Nandor begins to pursue dates with a bunch of women in an attempt to find a partner. Guillermo has this jealousy that is frustrating for him to grapple with, especially with regards to Nandor’s interest in Gail. But beyond season 3, these feelings never seem to be mentioned again. Guillermo suddenly is no longer crushing on/in love with Nandor, and it’s baffling. What changed for him? Or was it the writers that just decided that was no longer a character trait they wanted to develop? Suddenly in season 4, after being stranded abroad, Guillermo bizarrely has a boyfriend, too. This immediately struck me as very strange, considering his decade-long devotion to Nandor. I’m not saying he should be hung-up on one person forever, but it’s weird to see this built-up affection and connection to Nandor be completely overridden for a random milquetoast British guy that appears in one episode. It doesn’t feel very in-character to me.
I guess this all amounts to me just being… frustrated. I haven’t been able to tell what these two are feeling or wanting or moving towards narratively at any point in time since season 3.

Hi Meg, I was wondering if I could get your insight on something... I'm interested in bioinformatics as a career but am not sure whether I should pursue just a Master's or try for a PhD. How did you decide how far you want to go with your education? I noticed you mentioned you hope to do a PhD someday? Thank you so much!
hey anon! okay, so in this answer I'ma focus on two things:
my thought process behind finalizing on a PhD
my approach to furthering education
I. Why PhD?
1. I love my subjects. I love the interdisciplinary nature of computational biology and it's sister subjects and I can see myself in academia- constantly learning and researching and exploring. 2. Even on the off chance that if I don't pursue a career in academia, I think I need a PhD anyway? Most high level positions in the industry for life-sciences requires a level of expertise that only comes with a doctorate, and I think my career opportunities (+ growth) will be rather limited without it.
Considering these two points, a PhD would be most suitable for me.
———————
Now, choosing the right type of graduate program can always be challenging because there are so many ways to go about it, and I am a very indecisive person so this was especially difficult for me. Here is my approach
II. Factors I considered before taking my next steps
My Primary Short-Term Goal(s)
I opted for a B.Tech in Biotechnology after 12th grade, and it is through the course of this degree that I realized my interest in computational biology and bioinformatics. My undergrad focused on too many topics and often emphasized wet lab over dry lab, so although I'm graduating with a specialization in Medicinal and Computational Biology, I don't know nearly enough regarding the computational aspects Thus, my short-term goal is to expand my theoretical understanding of the important aspects of bioinformatics & computational biology.
2. Course Options that Work
Now, I know that I want to continue my education, I've got two options- Masters and PhD. When I considered my immediate goal against these two options, I realized four things: a. I'm not equipped with the required dry lab skills to dive headfirst into research. b. I don't know enough bioinformatics to commit to anything long term right now c. I'm looking for a course that feels like an extension of my undergrad d. I want to keep my options open and consider all career opportunities Given these three options (+ course-related expenses + my skill level), it made most sense for me to choose a MSc at the moment rather than a PhD.
3. How the Course Ties in to My Long Term Goals
As I mentioned, my long term goal is to do a PhD. However, my upcoming graduate course is actually an MSc by Coursework degree, which- unlike a Thesis program, focuses on skill development (especially industry related) rather than research. In fact, most Thesis Masters can be converted to a PhD, but my program does not have that option. At first glance, this course might seem like it's going against my long term goal but consider: - Industry related or not, I need to develop computational skills before I can pursue research - After this course I might prefer to gain work experience for a couple years before opting for a PhD. - My preferred uni(s) for PhD are different from my preferred uni for Masters. [^To give an example on the last point, for masters i considered countries/unis known for their quality of education + closer to my home country (this will be my first time living abroad alone) but for my PhD, I'm looking at countries/unis that are pioneers in research for my subjects of interest (even if they are a lot farther away from home)] So essentially, I'm relying on this course to give me the skills and knowledge I need for a PhD in the future, while also giving me a buffer to understand and align my future goals and plans. Jumping from this to a PhD would be a lot harder than from a Thesis Masters, but that's a risk I'm willing to take.
So yeah, this was the way I went about choosing both my short term and long term academic goals. I hope this provides a good starting point for you! Don't stress out too much about it though; the truth is that there is no right or wrong choice, whatever decision you make will warp around your intentions and work for you the way you want it to. Best of luck for your future endeavors!!! I'm sure it'll all work out <3

DM has an article that said William was very worried about Harold's new therapist and thought he was unwell to make decision to live abroad. There were anons (or was it you Plant?) that mentioned that the Royals were furious with Meg because she made Harold stop taking medication or stop seeing therapist who prescribed meds. Looks like this rumor is also true. OMG Plant, ALL of those rumors about them turned out to be true!!!
It wasn’t me, but I remember the rumors. The first ones hit in early 2017. Then this happened:
So, yes, he has definitely been off his meds for a while. The therapist he thanks in the acknowledgements does energy work or something like that.
It’s wild that everything eventually gets confirmed.

...I always imagined him to do something similar to his Fallout iteration. In GTA AU he probably studies medicine abroad (maybe in Europe or Asia) while Meg runs the family business at home. I'm not even sure he knows about all the trouble she gets into with the Weezbugs.

Funniest Possible "Parents" for Tarn/Damus/Glitch that ignores timelines and ages and reproduction for amusement.
MegOP, classic, divorced, Optimus originally had custody until Megs got him and he wound up hating both by the end. Especially in TFP.
ShockOP, tragic, Orion Pax got custody his sugar daddy's kids when he mysteriously vanished, and one of them decided to join a group dedicated to destroying the government that erased Shockwave. The "your aren't my dad vibes are imaculate".
Rodiclash, the absolutely funniest reason for Damus to have originally been those colors. Also, making him younger and the baby of the DJD is hilarious conceptually. Also he's personal grudge against Thunderclash is a mistaken thought on Hot Rod's part that Thunderclash ran out on them when in reality his eveil second in command hid it leading to the break up and Roddie becoming a single parent. If he's father is "the Greatest Autobot Ever" clearly being and Autobot isn't worth much. The Lost Light is the Daddy Issue onion.
Minimus x OG Ultra Magnus, the absolute regency drama aesthetics of this and the shock and reveal would be great, and both Tarn and Minimus would be hilarious to deal with this emptionally strained revelations. Dominus pegging Tarn as his nephew and kidnapping him because he did the math and "who fucked his little brother, ran out on him, and lead to this"? Suddenly that summer abroad makes sense. Funnier if original Ultra Magnus is alone and Dominus highjacks the DJD to track him down and have a family reunion while the DJD awkwardly tries to be supportive and are confused why Vos is so murderous. Minimus, meanwhile, is having a tearful reunion with the child he gave up for adoption, thinking he'd have a better life only to find out his life wasn't great while Tarn is going through all sorts of emotions and tears up as well. Vos meanwhile has cornered Ultra Magnus saying "he just wants to talk." Adds an interesting layer to Minimus's thing with Ultra Magnus.
Ultra Magnus x Hot Rod, TFP, Ultra Magnus showing up with Hot Rod and their mildly evil baby.
RodiSound, Cyberverse. Everyone trying to figure out how to tell the mourning Rodimus, he's widow baby with Soundwave looks just like a miniature version of the guy who tried to take over Cybertron.
G1 GalvRod. Hilarious.
You're so right though
Megop divorce child Damus is always interesting yep yep
OO ON SHOCKOP WITH GLITCH BECAUSE THAT'S BAAAAASICALLY CANON. It's basically canon. Basically.
OWO on rodiclash baby Tarn, because that would have all the implications considering Tarn. Just... Considering Tarn.
The Lost Light is the Daddy Issue onion
Indeeeeed
The idea of Minimus having known the original UM has interesting implications and symbolism considering what goes down later on, and I am also gifted the idea of beastformer!Tarn who would be beautiful. Dominus would have such an interesting role in it too. Yesss.
IT WOULD BE HILARIOUS FOR TFP MAGS TO SHOW UP WITH A SILLYGOOFY BOYTOY AND A MILDLY EVIL BABY.
Having Damus/glitch/Tarn as a Cyberverse Soundrod baby would be mildly hilarious because you can argue he explicitly named this kid after the guy who tried to kill them all out of spite. You can argue for reincarnation here considering how it was Soundwave that took Cyberverse Tarn out of the world, and you can argue that it was Soundwave and Rodimus who proceeded to bring him back into it. raise him right this time.
Another suggestion: tfp wavewave child Tarn. He's their passion project in so many ways of the word.
aNOTHER SUGGESTION: earthspark Glitch/Damus who was adopted/fostered by Megatron for a while. We follow with my one idea where his design is more like his "Glitch" era design but a little more eldritch

EXCLUSIVE BORIS JOHNSON: My 'manly pep talk' with Harry in bid to stop Megxit - first extraordinary revelation from the political memoir of the century, serialised exclusively by the Mail https://ift.tt/3ng9OCG Pep Talk" sounds like an attempt to appeal to Harold's ego by paying tribute to Harold and praising Megsy's "work." I find it so interesting the lengths they all went to to persuade Harold and his wife to stay. No wonder Harold and Megs have such a high opinion of themselves and thought the RF would cave and beg them to come back. Boris Johnson made an extraordinary last-ditch bid to persuade Prince Harry not to quit the UK.The former Prime Minister reveals in his sensational new memoir that he was asked to give the Duke of Sussex a 'manly pep talk' to convince him it would be a mistake to leave Britain for a fresh start abroad with his wife Meghan.Mr Johnson's new book, Unleashed, will be serialised in the Daily Mail from Saturday, and is already tipped to become the political memoir of the century. He reveals that in January 2020, just weeks after his landslide election win, officials in Downing Street and Buckingham Palace believed he might be able to talk Harry out of his seismic decision to quit the UK and walk away from his royal duties. The ex-PM writes that there was 'a ridiculous business... when they made me try to persuade Harry to stay. Kind of manly pep talk. Totally hopeless.'The secret meeting, which underlines the close links between No 10 and the Palace, took place in the margins of a UK-Africa investment summit in London's Docklands. It came just hours after the duke gave an emotional speech in which he said he and Meghan were leaving with 'great sadness' but felt they had 'no other option' but to step away from royal life. The two men met for 20 minutes without aides as Mr Johnson tried to persuade the prince to reconsider.A friend said Mr Johnson paid tribute to Harry's efforts on the Invictus Games and praised Meghan's work on their shared passion for promoting the education of women and girls in developing countries.'He thought they were a great asset to UK plc and it was a real shame they were leaving when they were doing such great work,' the friend said.'It was a man-to-man conversation, they were totally alone. But Harry wasn't for turning – he was unpersuadable by that point.'Boris succeeded in delivering Brexit but even he couldn't stop Megxit.'https://ift.tt/zdTeFAc post link: https://ift.tt/wVLH42E author: Von_und_zu_ submitted: September 26, 2024 at 09:59PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. A couple of weeks ago I asked about people’s favorite book or books they read this year. Between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and discord, I have a list of 123 books in no particular order that my friends and family loved this year. If it was a series then I listed the first book. Each star is an additional recommendation. I haven’t read all of these, they may or may not reflect my personal opinions, though my favorite books are on the list too. The most recommended books were How Far The Light Reaches by Sabrina Imbler, one or all of the Murderbot books by Martha Wells, and Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, because if there’s one thing my friends have in common across platforms, it’s that you’re all nerds (affectionate). Enjoy, and I hope you find your new favorite book!

Jo's school, the war, those Germans and how to write a good character purely by accident.
A literary essay that came to my mind yesterday, through the conversation with @nocturnalazure
Tumblr media
Originally I wanted to include this in the favourite characters tag, but it required so much background information: It's easy to find good characters in well-written books. One of my favourite characters in a badly written book is Frieda Mensch from the Chalet school series (the blonde girl, in the back on both images)
I discovered the Chalet School series at a jumble sale a few years ago, and I enjoy reading it because I like to imagine what could have been done with some good plotting skills. Also it's full of motifs that only made sense in the mid 20th century (the chain-smoking lung specialist) and the German spoken by the characters is simply hilarious. (Onkel Reise - a very tall man.)
Interestingly, the series is heavily inspired by Little Women and its sequels, especially Jo's school. It's about the English sisters Josephine (Joey) and Madge (not Meg!) Bettany who set up an international school in Austria around 1930. There's also an unrelated little Amy around.
Frieda Mensch is an Austrian girl who goes to that school and becomes a friend of Joey's. So far that's nothing special, the series is literally about Joey being everyone's supportive friend. In volume two the sisters spend Christmas with Frieda's family in Innsbruck, which makes her stand out a little. Then, because her first name means "peace" and her surname means "human", the author assigned her the role of the peacemaker in her class. She's portrayed as a serious, law-abiding girl, but of course schoolgirls must also be good sports and know when to break the rules. Even if it's possibly an accidental contradiction, this gives her an implicit conflict. Gradually she becomes the main loyal friend who supports Joey if needs be (like on nightly ice-skating-rescue-missions ^).
When the girls in the books are around 19 and just left school, in real life the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany hit. By the time the school could be fictionally evacuated, war had begun too. Suddenly this Austrian girl whose name means "peace" and "human" becomes hugely symbolic. Frieda has to flee to England, one of her friends' father is tortured to death, her fiancée is also shortly imprisoned and suddenly she's a girl with a fate. She also helps Joey, who is married by then and has recently given birth, to cross the Channel. At the end of that volume Frieda gives a speech to what's left of the school, about peace and acting humanely despite political conflicts. Wars change many lives and reveal unknown strength in some people - sometimes this is even true for fictional characters.
(If I were set the task to write a novel in which an international school defies the Nazis, my first thought would be that they might have some Jewish students they must protect. Interestingly, this thought never crossed the author's mind. The Nazis turn their full force on this English school because the girls privately vowed to always keep up their girl guide ideals, even the Germans and Austrians from whom they're about to be separated. While violence against Jews is mentioned in the story, it shows how little the threat to them was taken seriously abroad. It also shows the hope that the decent-minded Germans might get the upper hand again after a while. It's strongly biased in its own way, but it's a perspective one doesn't find in books that were written with the whole history in mind. That's why I enjoy historic fiction so much.)
If I ever get so far with the McCarrics, I'm going to steal a lot from Highland Twins go to Chalet School. In fact I've already named Shiena after a character from that book.

This is an ask to everyone, but I'm guessing Megs will be more interested in this than others.
So, if someone wanted to send you a fan fic, are there any tags in particular to look out for? Like, things to avoid or preferences. For example, are you interested in ones with relationships or would you like fighting and would you like fan fiction that's not necessarily transformers specific (I see Megs likes Dickens, for example) or AUs? Would you like to see fics about you?
Questions aside the next fic I like, I'm going to send your way anyways Megs, but preferences are always good.
Look at his favourite stories! He likes mushy romance slag.
Starscream...
Well, you do! North and South, Romeo and Juliet, Great Expectations – they're all slaggy romance novels from hundreds of years ago! Boring, sickly sweet, drivel!
I also like Terry Pratchett, but I do not have a favourite story by him. Perhaps Witches Abroad... but, then, his Commander Vimes stories are also excellent... Then we have Sherlock Holmes (again, no favourite) and Agatha Christie's novels (I particularly like her Miss Marple stories).
I like stories that are engaging. I do like romance – and poetry – but I also like humour and mysteries are fun. I like things that... make me think and feel.
I am not so vain that I only wish to read things about myself, but I will not shy away from one that is centred around me either.

August 3rd 1460 saw the death of King James II during the siege of Roxburgh Castle.
Known as ‘James of the fiery face’ for the bright red birthmark that covered a whole side of his face, James II was one of the most forceful of the Stewart rulers.
Just six when his father James I was murdered in 1437, all through his childhood and adolescence the Douglases vied with other nobles for control of him. He was 18 when he married a niece of the Duke of Burgundy, Mary of Gueldres, in 1449 and took charge of matters for himself.
With a temperament as fiery as his face, James loved hunting, tournaments and war. He was fascinated by artillery and the Duke of Burgundy gave him the now famous Mons Meg siege gun, which is still at Edinburgh Castle. Short of money until he killed the Earl of Douglas with his own hands in 1452 and then confiscated the Douglas estates, he used the income to support his own effective government. He also had to deal with the English, whose fingers were in Scotland’s pie. While cultivating alliances abroad and negotiating with both the Yorkists and the Lancastrians during the Wars of the Roses, James assaulted Berwick in 1455, mounted a sally into Northumberland in 1456, raided the English-held Isle of Man and attacked Berwick again in 1457.
The English had long possessed Roxburgh Castle in the Borders and in 1460 James led an army to besiege it. He was standing close to one of his prized cannon when he ordered it to be fired, possibly to salute the arrival of his Queen Mary. The cannon exploded and James was mortally wounded. According to Robert Lindsay of Pitscottie, writing a hundred years later, his thigh was snapped in two and he was ‘stricken to the ground and died hastily’. He was 29 years old.
Roxburgh Castle fell to his forces a few days later, and Scotland had another young King in James III who would make his own enemies and die a violent death himself.
Pics are of James and the aforementioned Mons Meg.
