In actual fact, it was a powder containing calomel, a mercurous chloride--mercury. Calomel will purge a person's bowels violently & in higher doses causes excessive salivation reminiscent of a dog with rabies. Continued exposure caused infants to develop acrodynia, or "painful tips," so called because the child's hands & feet would swell painfully, the skin splitting. Abraham Lincoln, prior to his presidency, religiously took little blue pills to remedy headaches, depression & constipation. Said little blue pills contained mercury. Later in the same month, a study on different pathways of mercury in the environment of an abandoned mine in the Palawan village published in the ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development (#AJSTD) indicated a US EPA Hazard Index value of ">1" for mercury, "which is beyond acceptable limits." In a component study published by the multidisciplinary team of scientists from the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) earlier in July, total mercury on sediments sampled from 28 sampling stations off the coast of Honda Bay were found to have concentrations (range: 0.04-12.7 mg/kg) "in the same range of sediment total mercury concentration in the dredged area of Minamata Bay in 2006." Minamata City in Japan is the site of a widespread chronic mercury poisoning which affected natal and pediatric development among its residents in the 1950s after methylated mercury was released by an industrial chemical factory in the area. Data on total mercury found in Honda Bay sediments indicate lower concentrations in 1982 (range: 0.0013-0.19 mg/kg), 1994 (range: 0.003-3 mg/kg), and 1996 (0.01-0.075 mg/kg). Revegetation of upland areas and preservation of river banks in the city are being recommended by the scientists from PNRI to prevent further transport of contaminated sediments into Honda Bay.
