WHEN THERE'S A romance between a human and a siren/mermaid/whatever water thing, and instead of a clear "happily ever after" or "and one of them was hearbroken forever", the audience is instead left with a scene of the siren pulling the human underwater, often while kissing them, down, down, until you can't see them at all, and it's like -- did the siren's kiss give the human the ability to breathe underwater? did it change them into one as well? or did the siren, having their human lover's full trust, drag them into the depths to their death? is this the only way a human can be with a siren? as bones? and who cleans them? fish? the siren? we don't know. ohhhh my fucking god we just don't know

Leaving Teeth Marks

Here at BadPosture studio, it’s always Rinharu propaganda hour. And by "propaganda," I mean reading canon material as plain proof that Rin and Haru are stupid about each other. While the content of the mooks are dreams the characters have, (which take place within the Future Fish AU), they’re nevertheless revealing of their feelings towards each other in the main story. All but the final mook can be read in sequence, which is to say they could reasonably follow the same chronology. The Rin/Haru story is reflective of kid Rin’s perspective, whereas the rest of the mooks depict him in a way closer to his behaviour as a teenager. Despite the disparity between Rin’s attitude towards Haru in mooks 4 and 5, one thing remains the same: Rin wants a bite of Haru.

So…what does this mean? A literal reading is obvious. I mean, really, how much more intimate can a person get than acquainting their mouth with the crook of someone else’s neck? To gain half-fish powers in mook 5, Rin could have drawn blood from virtually anywhere on Haru’s body, but he opts to stick his head in between the bars of the cell to bite down on Haru’s neck. In mook 4, when Nagisa asks Rin what he’d do if he were to catch Haru, he says he’d have “a taste.” Then he elaborates, saying, “That merman is my prey. One of these days, I’ll catch him by his tail and make him mine.”

…Half-fish or not…saying you want to make a person yours? Seriously, if Rin didn’t mean it that way, then why does he say it so sexy? …I’m losing focus here!

The emotional climax of mook 5 is when Haru asks Rin why he’s so determined to show him sights he’s never seen before, and Rin tells him it’s because he wants to share the things he loves with someone else—perhaps because half-fish Haru likely never had those experiences before, or perhaps because Rin didn’t want Haru to resign to simply existing and nothing more. By the end of the story, these feelings are obviously reciprocated, with Haru promising to share sights of his own. Rin likely recruited Haru for their elementary school relay with the same goal in mind—here was someone amazing he wanted to share experiences with. So, whether we read the biting thematically or literally, Rin wants to leave his mark on Haru. In both the main story and mook 5, it was love at first sight for Rin, which is to say that he’s been Haru’s since the day they met.

Taking Haru by the tail and making him his is not unlike Rin initiating the kabedon in season 1 and telling Haru to swim for him. The operative words “mine” and “for” are decidedly much more proprietary than swimming/sharing a dream with Haru. And this is because Rin’s fixation on Haru was perverted into something much more desperate and selfish as he got older. After all, he didn’t quit swimming as a kid because he lost to Haru after being abroad for a year, he quit because despite their separation Haru was able to move on and continue improving while Rin wasn’t. Believing that the effect Haru had on him was one-sided—that Haru didn’t need him and faired no better or worse whether he was around or not—made Rin want to take away the power Haru had over him and use it against him instead.

Of course, Rin had it right the first time. Haru does feel the same way and would, in fact, welcome Rin to make himself at home in the crook of his neck. Incidentally, every time they’ve hugged it out, Rin has propped his chin on the same shoulder he dreamt of sinking his teeth into. Maybe it isn’t such unfamiliar territory after all. Maybe it’s exactly where he belongs.

Ranking Free! Ending Themes by How Much Sense They Make

To be clear: this is not by any means a ranking of how much I like them. This list is STRICTLY ordered by the level of internal logic both within the ending and between it and the rest of the show.

What Wonderful Days - it’s disco. They’re gay. This makes perfect sense. Next question.

Future Fish - this one is a little wacky in places (Nagisa’s alien pals, merman Haru, the fact that Rei seems to be in Every field of study rather than a specific one) but in ways that are completely explained by the fact that this is the perspective of children. This is how kids think the world works. I wish the world actually did work like this, it would be so much more fun.

Splash Free - this one at least has some kind of coherent narrative to it… if we ignore the underwater gay club at the beginning.

Gold Evolution - the only sense I can make of this one with ANY slight level of certainty is that it’s some kind of Broadway tribute?? I think?? That one shot feels like it’s a reference to West Side Story, but I’m not sure about that. There’s so many costume changes. They’re dancing. I have no clue what’s going on, but damn if I’m not enjoying every second of it.

A merman with a bit of a storied life, he currently works for a fashion brand and is a bit of a de facto leader at the department (though he doesn't actually hold a manager title). He's just that nice.

He has four younger siblings, that, despite him being adopted, adore him. They see him as their real brother - I mean, how could he not be?

His life in the ocean beforehand is a sore spot.

He lives as a human for the most part but being a sea creature does come with its drawbacks; and that forms most of his life.

you genuinely had nothing to do today. for once, you weren't swamped with homework or practice. while you lay on your bed, you realised you hadn't texted haru in a while. he'd come to visit you each day after all, there wasn't a need. but now, you decided this was an appropriate time to shoot him a quick message.

at the fast response to your suggestion, you figured that you probably wouldn't be getting a text back unless it was haru asking where you were. which was highly probable, since the water-loving boy would sprint to the aquarium if it meant being near water.

thankfully, you lived close by, so you could take your time getting ready while he hurried to the entrance to the aquarium. you were proven to be right when you arrived, catching him viciously texting on his phone. soon after, you got a text asking where you were.

"look up."

you were surprised at how fast haru's head snapped up at her words. he made fast work of slipping his phone into his pocket, grabbing your hand and leading you to the entrance. you felt your cheeks burn as you passed people, staring at your interlinked hands. you knew they weren't really judging you guys, but you couldn't help but feel a bit embarrassed at the attention.

"haru, what about tickets?" you asked, leading to him to dig through his pocket and hand you said item.

"i already paid for them, i was just waiting for you," he said, refusing to face you as his eyes were locked onto the archway that led the crowds into the building. giving your tickets to the staff member to stamp and return, haru continued to pull you along.

entering the dark halls lit by the aquarium tanks, haru's eyes seemed to sparkle. maintaining contact, you noted the small smile that rested on his face. in all your time knowing him, you'd never seen him so peaceful.

pulling you to the front of the crowd, he sat on the bench that faced a tank. his eyes flitted over each fish, mentally noting their patterns but not bothering to retain the information. meanwhile, you couldn't help but stare at him instead of the fish. his black hair soaked in the blue light that radiated from the tank and it wasn't hard to imagine him as a merman, swimming free through the ocean among the fish held in the tank.

remembering the dolphin keychain that hung from his house keys, you tugged at his hand again, gently lacing your fingers with his to lead him through the building. surprised by your sudden leadership, haru let you lead him through the aquarium. squeezing through crowds of kids, you pulled him closer to you so you wouldn't lose him, even though your hands were linked.

entering an open arena, you pulled him to the front of the seats, almost shaking with excitement as you sat down. haru noticed that you'd forgotten to release his hand, but decided against mentioning it after seeing the sparkle in your eyes. as someone's voice came over the speaker, he diverted his attention to the large pool that the stadium overlooked and though he was unaware of it, the same sparkle that your eyes held was replicated in his.

splashing through the water was a pair of dolphins, seemingly smiling as they waited beside the trainer. in your gleeful state, you shuffled in your seat, leaning your head against haru's shoulder as you smiled at the dolphins that performed tricks and laughing as they splashed at you and haru. he was quick to realise you had began leaning on him, but as awkward as he was, he felt a warmth spread within him that you were comfortable with his presence.

the trainer noted haru's expression of awe, that of which rivalled the approximately 30 kids who were scattered around the stands, and instructed the dolphins to swim to the front of the pool.

"do you want to touch?" they asked, walking around to the front of the pool and standing beside the dolphins who poked their heads above the surface of the water, a thick barrier of glass separating the trainer and the animals. haru hadn't registered their words until you dragged him up, letting go of his hand to reach for the smooth head of one of the dolphins. hesitantly, haru ran a hand across the other dolphin's skin, mouth falling open at the surreal experience. you laughed at his expression when the dolphin spouted, leaving little droplets of water in his black hair. "would you like me to take a photo of you guys?" the trainer offered, to which you smiled and handed them your phone. standing beside each other with a dolphin on each end, the trainer took a multitude of photos, but not before both dolphins leaned in to give the 2 of you a wet kiss on the cheek.

"thank you!" you said, bowing slightly and taking your phone back. as the 2 of you left the stadium, you glanced at haru's face, memorising the image of his subtle smile. "good date, no?"

"what?"

"nothing," you responded, the smile you wore throughout the day hadn't worn off, even as you walked home. stopping at your door, you turned to give him a wave before you went to enter your house, but was stopped by haru, who had gripped your hand gently. "hm?"

haru's blue eyes darted to the ground as he mumbled, "thanks for the date..."

the presence of warmth across your cheeks and the increase in heart rate caught you off guard, but nonetheless, you turned to face him fully and bowed extravagantly, pressing a kiss to his hand. "you are welcome, kind sir."
