In "The Dragon's Call"
Uther talking with Arthur in the throne room.
Uther: (warnly) Who is he?
Arthur: (mad and anxious cause Merlin was stabbed and he's not there with him) You called me all the way here just for that? He's Gaius' appreantice. He told you that!
Uther: Don't take me for a fool, Arthur. I'm asking who is he TO YOU. (looks at Arthur, sternly) It's obvious that you knew him from before.
Arthur: (thinking) Shit... (says) We... met just 3 days ago.
Uther: (increasenly raises his voice in anger) And you expect me to believe that you made such a tremendous display just for some peasant man that you've known for 3 days?!
Arthur: That 'peasant man' just saved my life!
Uther: For which I'm greatful... but also suspicious.
Arthur: What?!
Uther: He took a knife for you, shielded you with his body... and called you by your name. Yet you insist you've only known each other for 3 days. (pauses dramatically) I'll ask again. What is that man to you?
Arthur: (sweats)
Gaius: (enters) You called for me, your Majesty?
Arthur: (surprised) Gaius! What are you doing here? You should be attending Merlin!
Uther: (sarcastic) Oh, you know his name too. What a surprise.
Gaius: (Looking at Uther, but reassuring Arthur) The boy is stable. The blade didn't puncture anything vital, but it was poisoned. I managed to extract the poison thought, so he is out of danger now.
Uther: You told me you recently hired this boy as your apprentice, right Gaius?
Gaius: Yes, sire.
Uther: How long has he been in The Citadel?
Gaius: Just a few days, sire.
Uther: Are you sure?
Gaius: Yes, he just arrived 3 days ago.
Uther: And he has never been in The Citadel before.
Gaius: Oh, no sire. Merlin is from Ealdor, an Essetir village located on the border. He's never been in Camelot before.
Arthur: (smiles smuggly) See?
Uther: (still not convinced but lets the matter be for now) You shouldn't act so distrough about strangers, Arthur. I expect better composure from you in the future.
Arthur: (hangs his head in a shame he doesn't feel) Yes, father.
Uther: (to Gaius) Your ward deserves a reward for his heroic act today.
Arthur: (thinking) Finally!
Uther: I'll give him 20 pieces of gold.
Arthur: (thinking) What?! (says) No! You can't reward him with that.
Uther: You think it's too much?
Arthur: Too little! He saved your son! Your heir to the throne! Or do you really think that my life it's worth just 20 pieces of gold?
Uther: (thoughful) I guess you have a point. How do you think I should reward him then?
Arthur: Status. Gold is precious but it ends eventually. Status is forever.
Uther: You want me to lord him? I can't do that. He's a peasant.
Arthur: But you can give him a position, maybe? In the royal household?
Uther: Hmm... It's not a bad idea. I'll have to check if there's an avaible position-
Arthur: (quickly) There's one!
Uther: (surprised) Really?
Arthur: (smiling) Well... I still need a personal manservant.
Uther: ...
Gaius: ...
Time skip. Uther talking to a servant.
Uther: (incredulous) He really did that?
Servant: (who had to confess under pressure) Yes, sire. The prince paid me to act as a victim while he pretended to bully me.
Uther: With what purpose?
Servant: (nervous) I... I don't know, sire. He didn't tell me, sire.
Uther: But you have a guess.
Servant: ...
Uther: You can speak freely. Nothing will be hold against you.
Servant: Well... my guess is that... the prince wanted to... get his now personal manservant's attention, sire. The prince stopped 'bullying' me when he arrived and defended me.
Uther: I've heard. He also let the boy go unharmed after he insulted him. After calling him... What did he call my son again?
Servant: A... prat... and an... ass, sire.
Uther: I see... (sighs) You're dismissed.
Servant: (between surprised and relieved) Really? I'm not in trouble, sire?
Uther: No, you aren't.
Servant: And I don't have to give the gold back?
Uther: (opens his eye wide) He gave you gold?!
Time skip. After the events of "The Mark of Nimueh"
Uther watches the knights coming back from a trip all cover in leaves and mud at night.
Uther: Where do you come from so late? (looks at them up and down) And so dirty.
Leon: Ahm... The prince entrusted us with an important mission-
Knight 1: (exhausted) We're looking for a flower.
Leon: (hits him)
Uther: A... flower?
Knight 2: A purple lily, sire.
Uther: Is it a lily with healing properties? A magic plant that endangers my citizens?
Leon: Ehm... no, just a regular purple lily, sire.
Uther: So my son order you to search for a purple lily in the middle of the night.
Knight 1: And he's still searching for one too as we speak.
Leon: (hits him again)
Uther: May I know why?
Knight 2: I think he wants to gift the flower to-
Leon: To a woman! We think he wants to gift a flower to a woman, sire. Though it's just a guess.
Uther: Right... (thinking) What a fussy woman. (says) He could have sent the flower to be painted if he needed a purple one that much.
Leon: He insisted it had to be naturally purple, sire.
Uther: Painting a lily purple is a luxury only royal can afford. I'm sure the girl would still appreciate it.
Knight 1: We told his highness that.
Knight 2: But he still insisted it had to be naturally purple, sire.
Uther: (thinking) I very fussy woman indeed. (says) I'm going to talk with him. This is ridiculous. There's a reason why we prefer to paint lilies purple. It's nearly impossible to find one that is naturally purple. He is never going to find-
Arthur: (entering, all cover in mud and leaves and with a purple lily in an improvised container in hand, very excited) I found it! Leon I... (stops himself when he sees Uther and composes himself) Good evening, father. (bows)
Uther: (explodes at seeing his son's embarrassing appearence) That woman is too fussy, she's making you act like a fool! Is not like she is your fiancée. If for her vagary of wanting a naturally purple flower you stoop to acting slavishly like a servant then Camelot is doomed! You are the prince! How can you give this image? have dignity! What kind of ignorant, uneducated, vulgar woman are you involving yourself with?!
Knight 1: (confused) I thought the flower was for his manser-
Leon: (covers the knight's mouth)
Arthur: (to the knight, seriously considering making him kill number 2) Innprudance*!
Uther: (his right eye ticing)... What?
Arthur: (thinking, kind of concerned) Has he always had a tic in his eye?
Time skip. After Lancelot's imprisonment.
Uther scolding Arthur in his chambers.
Uther: (furious) You imprisoned a man just because he touched your manservant?
Arthur: No, I imprisoned him because he was found in suspicious circunstances.
Uther: What suspicious circunstances?
Arthur: The part of the woods we found him in was burned! There was still spots of fire there and a big whole in the ground! The earth was shaking just before we encountered him, that's clearly sorcery! He could be in alliance with Nimueh for all we know!
Uther: (incredulous) Right... and it had nothing to do with the fact he was caring your servant in his arms when you arrived.
Arthur: Of course not! Do you really believe me that unreasonable?
Uther: Yes! You know why? Because everyone seems to believe that! Since you came back from your search of Nimueh, the whole castle doesn't stop talking about how you got a man arrested because he dare to touch your manservant!
Arthur: Well, it's not true.
Uther: Fine, if you're so sure he did sorcery, I'll prepare his execution inmediatly.
Arthur: I never said I was sure, just that I found him in-
Uther: Suspicious circunstances, I know.
Arthur: Like I said, I'm not unreasonable. I can't execute him for sorcery without solid prove.
Uther: But you're not going to free him either.
Arthur: Because of the suspicious circunstances.
Uther: So you're just... going to keep him in there.
Arthur: Yeah.
Uther: ...
Arthur: ...
Uther: I'm too old for this. (leaves)
Time skip. After Merlin moved in to Arthur's antechambers.
Uther being attended by Gaius in his chambers.
Gaius: (mixing a concoction in the king's tea) This should help you with your nerves, Sire. I don't know what to do about the tic in your eye though. I would recommend you to rest more.
Uther: How could I? I'm the king! I have a lot of duties to do!
Gaius: You could delegate some of your duties to prince Arthur-
Uther: Arthur! He's the reason I'm like this! Him and his greedy manservant! No offense, Gaius.
Gaius: None taken, sire. And I can assure Merlin is nothing like that. He's just an innocent country boy. I think he's not even aware of the prince's affections for him yet.
Uther: That's what he's making everyone believe! But it's all an act, I can see it! He used his seductive arts to have my son in the palm of his hand!
Gaius: (puts the cup of tea in the king's hand) Whatever you say, sire. Your tea.
Servant: (Knocks door from outside)
Uther: Come in. (takes sip of his tea)
Servant: Your Majesty, (Bows) You asked to keep you informed of... uhm.. any important change related to the prince and his manservant.
Uther: (sighs and take another sip) What did he do this time?
Servant: The prince asked his manservant to move to his antechambers, sire.
Uther: (relieved) Oh... That's not so bad.
Gaius: (cheering Uther up) Is not bad at all! As his personal manservant he should have moved there from the start. I'm surprised the prince didn't ask him to move before.
Servant: (sweating, nervous) Yeah...
Uther: (sighs) There's more, isn't it?
Servant: Uhm... well... there are rumors, sire...that says that..ahm...
Uther: (demands) What?
Servant: The reason the prince asked his servant to move was because he brought another man to his room, sire.
Uther: (breaks the cup of tea in his hand)
Gaius: (sighs, to the servant, calmly) Bring me another cup and some bandages, please.
Servant: (bows and leaves)
Uther: Gaius.
Gaius: Yes, sire?
Uther: You have brought a seductive demon to the castle.
...
Uther finding out about arthur's weird obsession with merlin ☑︎
*Innprudance is the actual name of the Knight just so you know. And it fits him perfectly.
Credits to my best friend Rosangela, who helped me with some dialogues and situations, no only in this part, but several ones. Love you so much! ❤️

Unrealistic that all these magic reveal merthur au’s out there have Merlin remembering enough of his life to be able to recap the entirety of the show to Arthur without leaving anything out all in one go.
magic reveal fanfic’s:
Merlin: my magic’s for you arthur. Its only for you. *proceeds to give chronological order of events starting at ep1 all the way up to the reveal*
10x funnier and more likely:
Merlin: *months or years after the reveal* so anyway, there I was, tied to a tree, and a serkhet stings me, right?
Arthur: *spluttering* I’m sorry what

arthur is a simple man. all he asks is for is that him and merlin have at least 3 square inches of skin contact at all times and if that is not possible then merlin must be at least within a radius of his arm’s length, ready to initiate skin contact at any given moment, and if that is not possible then merlin must at least be within his line of sight so that at any given moment, he can approach him for that minimum 3 square inches of skin contact. couldn’t ask for a more simple man.

The funny thing is that Arthur is always portrayed as some popular jock in modern au fics, when in canon he is a friendless loser.. all his friends are just Merlin’s friends who just started accepting that Arthur was there and ordering them around because Merlin was busy giving Arthur cow eyes when he wasn’t giving big speeches about how great of a King Arthur would become/is
Okay Leon was kinda Arthur’s friend before Merlin, but even that rule-fkn-following knight adopted Merlin when he got the chance… mr giving Merlin advice on what weapon to kill the king with

"You have Arthur's complete trust" Merlin laughs when Gwen tells him this and asks her what she is talking about.
Gwen looks at him strangely, as if she thinks Merlin is joking but then she sees Merlin's expression and can't hide her surprise.
"Merlin, you do realise that you're the person Arthur trusts most in the world, right?" Merlin chuckles again but this time it is with a sense of guilt and annoyance that won't let him alone.
"I don't think so."
Gwen, who until then had been mending one of Morgana's dresses, puts down her needle and thread and looks at him seriously, Merlin doesn't think he has ever seen her like that.
"You two fooling around and teasing each other is fine, Merlin, but you can't really think Arthur doesn't trust you. You can come and go from his rooms as you please, whether he's there or not, you have the keys to his room, and you're the only person who has them, and the whole castle knows perfectly well that Arthur has priceless things in there. I know you shave him every morning and believe me, that is not the job of a manservant,"
"But he is the one who-"

"That's right, Merlin. He's the one who."
Gwen seems genuinely annoyed that Merlin doesn't grasp how much Arthur trusts him, and Merlin finds himself having a chasm in his chest because he doesn't want to think about it. He doesn't want to think about Arthur's trust in him, he doesn't want to think that Arthur thinks Merlin is a person worthy of his trust, because Arthur is the most noble and sincere person in the world and Merlin is hiding most of his life from him.
"I have to go, Gwen."
Merlin leaves everything where he is and does not even turn around when Gwen (probably guilt-ridden from that lecture) calls him back.
Merlin hides in the first crevice he finds and struggles to breathe.
He struggles to breathe because Arthur trusts him and he knows it, but he tries to think about it as little as possible. He tries to live life day by day and not think about tomorrow and how long it is that he is lying to him. He tries not to have a heart attack every time Arthur looks at him and smiles or pats him on the back saying "good job!" or when Arthur is the first to worry about him when they are attacked by bandits.
Merlin tries not to think about Arthur's scream when they were separated on a mission and Merlin had to drop rocks to protect him. He tries not to think about the time he had to steal the keys from Arthur's room and Arthur, finding him in the room early in the morning, didn't bat an eyelid at the excuse of the woodworms because Arthur trusts him and simply told him to leave.
Merlin is a horrible person who does not deserve this kind of trust, not when he is lying to the most important person in his life.
"Breathe."
Merlin, caught in the middle of a panic attack he didn't even realise was happening, jerks at the voice and Arthur's hand resting on his shoulder.
"Breathe, Merlin, come on, in and out, calmly, follow me" Arthur takes deep breaths and Merlin tries to keep up with him but Arthur's mere presence makes the situation worse and Merlin finds himself with tears in his eyes as Arthur looks at him more and more worried.
"Gwen!" shouts Arthur then and Gwen is at his side within moments "Go get Gaius, I can't move Merlin from here in this condition."
Gwen looks at Merlin and she's so worried and feeling so guilty that Merlin wants to say something to her but is already so much if he can breathe.
Gwen leaves and Arthur and Merlin are alone and Arthur strokes his back trying to calm him down and Merlin bursts into tears.
Arthur lays a hand on his shoulder and settles him on top of him, not holding him too tightly for fear of Merlin's breathing getting worse.
"I was looking all over for you, you know? I thought you'd be at the tavern or having fun somewhere and instead, I find you here doing the doppol-head."
Merlin laughs between sighs and sobs and Arthur continues.
"You have a myriad of tasks to do. My armour is completely ruined, I have no idea where my sword is and you were supposed to revise my speech for this afternoon but apparently, you had better things to do."
Merlin's breathing calmed and he was finally able to concentrate better, noticing that the king was sitting on the dirt floor next to him and practically rocking him.
"Arthur…"
Arthur turns his head slightly but they still can't make eye contact.
"I have magic."
Arthur stiffens and Merlin already feels lost without his king by his side even though he is still physically there.
"Alright," Arthur murmurs and Merlin gets up to look at him because there is no way he is hearing correctly. Arthur turns to look at him and his expression isn't the happiest but Merlin can't blame him "we've been through a lot worse, haven't we?"
And etiquette be damned, what is right or not right to do at court, Merlin throws himself onto his king and holds him as if he never wants to let him go again, holds him trying to tell him everything he is unable to say right now in words.
Arthur holds him just as tightly and Merlin finally knows that everything will be all right.
And that is how Gwen and Gaius find them, embraced tightly in the middle of a corridor in Camelot.

Y’all ever been reading some fanfiction and you just randomly check back into reality. And realize you’ve been reading 100k words of domestic bliss and fluff about two make believe people. Like no action, no violence, no plot, just two people living their lives and having conversations about home renovations.
Does it make you question yourself…?
…cool me neither

As with all momentous things, it began slowly. A sleep tunic and a change of clothes, became a drawer of Merlin’s clothes in Arthur’s wardrobe. Then a book on one of the nightstands turned into the entire thing becoming Merlin’s tiny library because he needed choices when it came to bedtime reading. And half of Arthur’s wardrobe was crammed with Merlin’s clothes, and the quilt his mother made laid over the foot of the bed that Arthur called their’s, and there was enough dust in the room that used to be Merlin’s for it to be considered well and truly abandoned.
Until…
“I cannot fucking believe you!” Merlin shouted, slamming open the door, and striding through it without a care in the world if said door ricocheted back to hit Arthur in the face.
Which it would have if Arthur weren’t trained since birth to have cat-like reflexes. He caught the door, glared at it, and seethed. He flopped down in chair, pinched the bridge of his nose, and waited for Merlin to calm himself.
“Don’t you have anything to say for yourself?”
Arthur closed his eyes against the pounding in his head. He had plenty to say, none of which would make Merlin any less upset. So he sat in silence until he couldn’t bear the curiosity of what Merlin was doing to make so much noise. He turned, and his heart stopped. In Merlin’s hand was his rucksack that usually hung on a hook beside the wardrobe, and was now full of Merlin’s clothes, and books, and—he’d even packed the fucking quilt.
“No.” Arthur stood, shaking his head. “Absolutely not. No.”
“What?”
“You. This. Whatever idiocy you’re thinking, no.”
“I’m going to my room, Arthur, where I can be away from whatever idiocy you’re thinking.”
“This is your room,” Arthur said slowly, and deliberately so the words could sink in through Merlin’s thick skull. “Do you not think it strange that you have to pack to go to your room? That all your things are here, and you haven’t slept in that tiny closet for months? You don’t just move out because you’re upset with me. You call me an idiot, and turn your head when I try to kiss you, and if I’ve really pissed you off—“
“You have,” Merlin interjected.
“Then you throw my pillow onto a chair and make me sleep in it!” Arthur shouted, and then bit his lip, trying to hold back the sudden rush of tears. Maybe Merlin was more than upset. Maybe…fuck. He sniffled, and softly added, “But you don’t walk out unless you stop loving me.”
Merlin’s rucksack dropped to the floor. “I didn’t—Of course, I love you. I didn’t realize. I just thought…”
“What? That I let all my servants claim my space, and half my bed?”
“Well I hadn’t thought we’d officially moved in together,” Merlin admitted sheepishly.
“We have. Months ago. You live here. I’m a prat. You’re all caught up now.”
And if Merlin wanted to linger in the argument before, he didn’t anymore. He didn’t even really want an apology for Arthur’s pigheadedness, but he got one kissed into his neck, and his lips, and his hair.
(Arthur’s the idiot in modern times here)

Merlin traveling back in time to save Arthur AU but with a twist!!
Merlin makes it to the sidhes, bringing a barely breathing Arthur with him. As expected, they ask for a price and Merlin offers his life, ignoring Arthur's protests.
Sidhe1: You're inmortal you can't die
Sidhe2: And even if you could, killing you would mean killing magic itself, therefore killing the earth itself.
Merlin: (crying desperate) I don't care! Take what you need! My blood, my magic, anything! Just save him!
Sidhe1: (smiling evily) I might know just the thing.
They never tell him what are they going to take from him, but he agrees. The sidhes start the ritual, while Arthur just keeps pleading weakely
Merlin: (smiling) If I somehow don't come back-
Arthur: (crying) Stop! Merlin don't do this. Please!
Merlin: I just want you to know that I love you.
Before Arthur can answer the ritual ends and Merlin blacks out.
When he wakes up he is in his way to Camelot in his old clothes and 10 years younger. He soon discovers he's been brought back to the very first day he met Arthur. He's confused. Have the Sidhes taken from him years of his life as a price? It doesn't make sense to him, but he decides to take advantage of this to prevent some things from happening.
Time goes by and while, in general, all events are repeating, not everything is happening as he remembers. Some people arrive in his live early, like Lancelot or Gawain. And Arthur treats him better? Like he says thank you to him more often and listens to him more. Merlin thinks it’s weird, but brushes it off thinking it’s due to the changes he's been making that some things are not quite the same.
Then the day comes when he finally reveals his magic to Arthur. He cries and Arthur hugs him telling everything its okey. Nothing its going to happen to him. Shortly after however Arthur also has a confession.
Arthur: I already knew.
Merlin: What?! Since when?
Arthur: the very start.
Merlin: How? I've been careful! More careful than before!
Arthur: Because you told me before. Well, not really before, but in the future. It’s complicated.
Merlin: Wait... you are from the future too?!
They are both surprised. They thought they were alone in this and it turns out they never were. Merlin cries all over again, apologazing for everything, for failing him, for not being able to save him, but-
Arthur: You did.
Merlin: ... What?
Arthur: You did save me.
Merlin: No, the sidhes tricked me. They sent us back in time-
Arthur: It was not them who did that. It was me.
Merlin: What... what are you saying?
Turns out what the ritual really did was turn Merlin into a small tree in exchange for saving Arthur’s life. A magic tree that would grow taller and taller and never die and whose ruts would expand making magic florish in the earth forever. Arthur of course was really upset after that. He demanded the sidhes to turn Merlin back but they only told him "what's done it's done" and that all he could do was pick the tree up before the roots growed if he wanted to move it elsewhere.
Arthur put the tree in a pot and brought it back to Camelot. Everyone was devasted with the news but they were also glad their king was alive and safe. No one blamed him, but Arthur always blamed himself. He repealed the ban as soon as he could and made sure everyone knew Merlin's involvement in the battle and later the other things he find out Merlin did for Camelot through Gaius. He made an anual event and a statue in Merlin's honor. Camelot slowly but surely welcomed magic again and became the most prosperous kingdom in the land.
Merlin: Oh...I don't remember being a tree.
Arthur: Yeah, I figured.
Merlin: But you repealed the ban! That's great! Magic was free again in the-wait... so why did you do all this if everything was fine? And how did you do it?
Arthur: Everything was NOT fine Merlin. You weren't there!
Merlin: (utterly confused) I was. As a tree.
Arthur: You know what I mean! You were there but you weren't. We mourned you but you were still alive. I kept you in that pot for longer that I should have because I wanted to keep you close all the time, yet looking at you was so painful... Gwen had to scold me into finally plant you in the garden so you could grow properly. I was broken inside, while trying to rule a kingdom. I kingdom we should have ruled together from the start!
Merlin: ...
Merlin: You're telling me you somehow traveled us back in time and throw away the golden age, your dream of uniting all Albion and all you worked hard for... just because you missed me?
Arthur: And because I couldn't say it back.
Merlin: What?
Arthur: That I love you too.

It would be delightful if a fed up Arthur went on a journey to find Merlin who, according to Gaius, is at the tavern again, only to start realizing that Merlin has literally never been to the tavern because no one knows who Merlin is (or at the very least they’re insistent that Merlin’s never been there.)

arthur pendragon is a thief, relentlessly stealing glances at merlin with utmost desperation to not be caught in the act and seem a fool. he smirks triumphantly after close calls, getting sickeningly cocky with it. arthur pendragon is also a terrible thief, as merlin notices each and every time. merlin would never reveal this acknowledgment to arthur. after all, a petty thief is no match for merlin who had already stolen the most prestigious of treasures, the heart of the future king.

We need more fanfics where Arthur is just a complete Sapiosexual (attraction towards intelligence and/or education) towards Merlin.
Merlin was one of the most intelligent characters in the show and he needs more credit in that aspect.
Maybe Merlin just showing skills that are either associated with nobility or just general intelligence.
And Arthur being absolutely appalled that Merlin is a great strategist and/or speaks more than one language or dialect, and/or that he's become a great physician. (This would be great for a 5+1 fanfic).
And apparently he's extremely attracted to it.
Anyone is completely free to use this idea.
