jumping on the poll bandwagon because I have not touched Scrivener in FOREVER (read: two weeks)

unfortunately, I do not have multiple stories like most people on Writeblr since I keep fixating on the same story and its characters, lmao, so IDK if I can do the same thing everyone else is doing

HOWEVER, I will be taking my thesis in BFA Creative Writing this year and I am going to do doing something based on my main story! I was planning on finishing Book 1 (which I already have 4 chapters for), but my thesis adviser is heavily discouraging I do a full novel (minimum requirement for word count is only 15k and we're supposed to finish writing that with revisions by early December) so I've got a bunch of backup plans just in case I can't convince her!!

so here's a poll + bonus read more for further description of thesis ideas!!

Book 1 (Excerpt)

This is actually the option my adviser recommended the most. I have already written the first four chapters, even doing major revisions, and that already hit the 15k minimum word count, so she said that just revising these chapters would be the easiest option.

My biggest gripe with this is that I don't want to end it after Chapter 4. It ends on a mediocre cliffhanger, and we don't meet the other two main characters until later on. Not to mention, the BFA CW majors in my university get to (independently) publish and sell copies of their thesis at the end of the year, so it would be much more satisfying if I do the full Book 1.

Anthology: Thematic

I was thinking I could do instead a thematic short story collection linking the common traits of the main characters (Axel, Avery, Leandro, and Nathan). Each of the short stories would focus on a different MC's backstory. The central theme would be their loneliness.

The stories are (without giving away certain plot twists in Book 1):

AXEL: a story about a group of friends playing together, which turns out to be a product of Axel’s imagination

AVERY: the story behind the fallout with her ex-friends

LEANDRO: Leandro talking to his family about getting friends while figuring out he's a trans guy

NATHAN: Nathan talking to other children working under his drug pimp spirit stain dealer

Anthology: Characterization

This one was inspired by fanfiction, specifically the concept of the same characters in alternate universes. How can you tell the character is still the same character when they have a completely different backstory and setting? Up to where do you draw the lines?

The various settings are:

Historical — Pride and Prejudice but set in the late Spanish colonial period and from the POV of Elizabeth’s (Avery) best friend (Axel)

Sci-fi time travel — From 2099 CE, Axel is asked to travel to 2013 Metro Manila to chase after a time-traveling criminal (Raven)

Urban fantasy (Aswangs) — Axel the friendly manananggal helping their friend Leandro, who recently discovered they’re a manananggal

Modern real-life — Axel signing up their friend Nathan on a blind date auction during high school fair season

Alesseia (Original) — Axel discussing how to beat Rex with all of their friends

Anthology: Timeline

A short story collection featuring the same character, likely Axel, at different points in the series. The series is divided into three arcs, so it would likely be:

one of my all-time favorite books is a tale for the time being by ruth ozeki!! i honestly thought it was going to be one of those books that i would outgrow, but i make it a point to annually re-read it and i'm still fond of it as ever. a more recent favorite read is good fortune by c.k. chau, which is a pride & prejudice retelling set in early 2000s chinatown, new york. had me experiencing an Emotion so similar to how the p&p 2005 film gives me and i definitely recommend it to everyone i know who loves that film as well haha

ohhh this is difficult. i'm severely sentimental even if i never talk about it. some memories i find myself going back to is when my grandfather would talk about the changes in roads, landmarks, and the general look of the city whenever we pass by. he's a cartographer in his own way because his old job required him to drive around different parts of the city and just. i usually had no idea what he was talking about but it felt so nice hearing his own fondness for metro manila despite its constant reconstruction and changing facades. and i got to see glimpses of his more younger self, still tucked in between the crevices of certain streets and winding avenues, even if the passing decades have made it different from how he first knew them. whenever i find that my driving anxiety is getting bad while i'm in the car i usually try to imagine my grandfather there with me because i've always associated him with driving <33

The Only Scientist in the Family 👨‍🔬

What does it feel like to be the only scientist in the family? 🧪🔬

When my grandmother died, all the family members from my mother's side came, including my aunts and uncles, my cousins, and their siblings. In the Philippines, families are typically extended, making family reunions either exhausting or unlikely, especially for very large extended families. At least 2–3 generations of the family tree primarily cover this aspect. 🌳

On one side of the story, there is a comparison of the careers and life choices that your cousins made. Typically, Filipino parents are highly competitive, often comparing you to someone they perceive as doing better, saying things like, "Look at ___; he has a car, a stable job, and great pay and benefits. 🚗💼💰This is a common comment amongst aunts and uncles. Comparison is a natural aspect of family reunions. During the reunion, the metrics of success primarily rely on the number of assets one can present or flaunt (this is how they flex). 💪💼 How much they earn, how many kids they were able to finish college, and how well off they are in terms of their respective careers—for the most part, it focuses on what I call superficial things, mostly tangible (no offense meant). I enjoy conversing with them because my perspective and motivations are quite different from theirs, especially when most of their motivations are different from mine. They often express a sense of pride and ownership regarding their siblings' successes. 💼 Despite facing various challenges within their own families, he or she supported their nephews or nieces in achieving their dreams or completing their education. 🎓 As a result, they tend to boast about how their kids pamper them. 🌟 Many of your cousins' jobs are either highly profitable or offer the greatest financial convenience. 💰 Tracking most of their careers, it is noticeable that I am the only scientist in our entire family (mother’s side). 👩‍🔬

On my father’s side, however, due to significant disparities in economic opportunities, he is illiterate. It's fortunate for them to have received at least an elementary education. 📚 My father completed elementary school, and according to what I heard from my late grandmother, he excelled academically, often ranking at the top of his class. 🎓 But since my dad wanted to help his family (his sister, brother, and mother), he grabbed the chance to ride the ship and sail to the new place of Metro Manila. ⛴️ His uncle started a photolithography business, and he recruited most of his nephews for job opportunities and ventures. According to what I heard from my grandmother, my dad is the son of a carnival owner in Cebu. 🎪 My dad, as a maiden child, was asked to live with my grandfather. I often hear this story, and I see it as a good opportunity for my dad to explore new ventures. However, I sensed some resentment because my dad also had to fend for his family on his own. 😔 This is a unique trait among Filipinos in general. They have this sense of pride and responsibility to show how independent they are. 🇵🇭 Most of my dad’s relatives are fishermen; their swimming skills determined their success, depending on how many fish they could catch. 🎣 But sadly, this can’t support and provide better opportunities for them since there are lots of factors involved when it comes to the number of fish that they can harvest from their respective nets. 🌊

Being with my relatives raised common questions about my salary and benefits. 💰 They often teased me, while few understood your true intentions or how much you wanted to contribute. 🤔 Your intrinsic drive for the quest that tests human boundaries is remarkable. 🚀 A middle-class background doesn't necessarily shield families from these persistent issues. 💼 You feel like you are the only one who is out of touch with the reality of the present time. 🕰️ You always think ahead since, for the majority of your work, you have deliverables to accomplish, as set by the funding agency that allowed you to ride your own mission. 📊 When you take part in something that your relatives think is pointless, you have no choice but to look for the support that will help you propel yourself to live up to your dream and vision that maybe someday everything that you have been doing right now will make sense. 🌟
