i really love how in that scene in the brig Izzy asks Stede to give him his worst and then he does. Because what Izzy really need desperately is a fight, i think, shouting, outrage, something, because he is feeling so so guilty he just wants some repercussion, at least some sort of punishment for what he and the crew have done to Ed. But Stede (not consciously i think) denies him even that outlet for his guilt and leaves him swamped in self-hatred

The way this fandom looks at Mew is exactly the way Boston seems to view him. They are obsessed with his virginity and his bare minimum standards for a potential partner and they seem to love villainising him in what only seems to be a desperate attempt to hide an insecure rotten core. But Mew seems to be, in actuality, a decent guy (if not slightly naive) who genuinely loves his friends and wants them to find love too. And he wants to find a guy for himself who will match his own standards. A very normal thing to desire for anyone who wants to date.

not to be a woman womaning all over the place but i feel like if you genuinely like. do not have friends that are women then you have something to work on. if you cant think of any female characters that you treat the same way you do male characters then you have something to work on. if you cant handle even seeing "i dont like being called a guy/bro/lad/etc because it doesnt feel gender neutral to me" but can understand when one of your masc besties is uncomfortable with being called girlie or sister then you have something to work on. if your default in regards to how you handle other people and even characters is to assume masculinity then you have something to work on. if you cant even let women and otherwise feminine people speak about our experiences without bringing up how you suffer too then you have something to work on.

it doesnt matter if youre queer or a poc or a minority in whatever which way, if you do not include women in your life and cant even stand a fucking inch of genuine feminism (and i dont mean terfs but god is it fucking agonizing that thats all you people can think of when you hear feminism anymore) where the point is to treat women, all women, equally then you have something to work on. listen to women, even the ones whose experiences completely dont align with yours (hell ESPECIALLY the ones whose experiences completely dont align with yours). just like how we all have to check ourselves for racism, ableism, queerphobia, we all have to check ourselves for misogyny too. stop acting like it got solved at some point. it still exists and it exists within you and you have to actually fucking work on that. "women should be included in your life and you should listen to them" shouldnt be a hard goddamn pill to swallow.

At the risk of being blocked by half the fandom (lol), can I say that... SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT

I kind of liked the idea of Izzy's redemption through a death arc? Sadly the show only got 8 episodes so it's quite apparent that it was a rushed affair with little to no emotional payoff, having him die like that, with no sacrifice for his family or anything similar. But I do understand why he died: he was Ed's past, he was the embodiment of all the toxic Blackbeard shit they did together, he was right in saying he had kept Ed from becoming what he was, because that's how their relationship was written in the first season! I know this fandom has all but whitewashed Izzy since the beginning of the hiatus after s1, making him into a completely different character, to the point where all the shit he did was scrubbed off to make him more palatable. But what happened remains on screen! He had to die so that Ed could be free. Well, it wasn't actually necessary of course, but it's symbolic. It fits well. I just wish they had a couple more episodes to make it less rushed. Izzy was never the poor innocent mew mew the fandom wanted him to be, I am very grateful that the writers kept that characterisation

I don't know why people just decided that mew was always nefarious when he was just a regular guy trying to live.

it wasn't his fault that his best friend was sexually obsessed with him. and he didn't owe ray anything. ray was not a kid. ray was a rope around mew's neck.

imagine having a friend who makes destructive choices. for years, you've been the nanny. every time they're in trouble, you have have to go running to save them. over and over and over again. because if you'll remember, ray wasn't calling cheum or boston, he was calling mew.

mew was the one staying sober for his friends. he was the one going to night clubs for his friends. at some point, he was bound to get tired and want something for himself.

not to mention the other issue of ray's feelings hanging over mew's head. this has not been easy for him.

yes, he looks reluctant to help. yes, he often berates ray for his choices. yes, he's not very kind all the time.

for fucksake, he's human and he's tired. AND RAY ISN'T HIS FUCKING CHILD.

i love sand as much as the next guy, but he's not a "better option "better" guy than mew. he's not some brand new type of shoulder that is the "only one who can see what ray is going through".

he hasn't been weighed down by an unspoken duty to ray if he's just been doing this for a few months.

this is the difference between meeting someone that you believe you can change, and being with someone for so many years that you KNOW you can't change them. while one person is optimistic and hopeful, the other person has given up and is really just going through the motions.
