i lied, i dont really like sex. put your clothes back on, i wanna talk abt the film masterpiece that revolutionised mafia movies and queer representation, Goncharov 1973 directed by Michael Scorsese.
the reason goncharov is always referred to as “goncharov (1973)” is because in 2013, another studio tried to remake the movie and “improve it” but really they just got rid of all the homoeroticism, recast andrey several times throughout filming and everyone generally hates it. goncharov (1973) >> goncharov (2013)
I don’t usually watch movies but I figured I had to talk about the use of the saxophone in Goncharov (1973). Saxophone tends to only be represented in a jazz context, but their use of saxophone transcriptions of works by modest Mussorgsky is just so tasteful.
Mussorgsky was one of the big 5 composers that were considered to have birthed the Russian style by taking the heavily Italian/French influenced work of Glinka and reducing it, filling the gaps with elements of Russian folk music. Also, the saxophone has a long history of being oppressed and banned by authoritarian governments. Taking these two art forms, the playing of the saxophone and the origin of Russian romantic music, and placing them in a movie with heavy themes of rejecting imperialism/oppression is just so meaningful. We love to see it!!
id love to see an actual production of goncharov (1973) but the thing is will it still mean the same if it were real? like part of the charm is that canon is anyones game like its still be dabted if katya died in the boat scene or if she simply faked it and the small details the inconsistencies between what happened in what scenes the difference in scripts its all a she said he said and thats where the fun is and as much as a quite-un-quote official movie would be fun the freedom to shape canon is what makes goncharov goncharov
using time as a major plot point/basis is such a difficult thing to sucessfully achieve but scorsese did it so seamlessly well now i want to shed a tear everytime i see a pocket watch
"love's a hard thing to understand, dear, but I know what you show me is not it" is the HARDEST fucking quote from Katya and NOBODY is talking about it
