Hot take but s3-s4 mike isn't different from s1-s2 mike. Y'all just ignored the signs of mental illness until it started affecting people other then himself. He threw himself into the quarry fully expecting to die in season 1, he was explicitly self-destructing in season 2 with the breaking rules, he just went the natural progression of that behavior with breaking his relationships in seasons 3-4.

Can we talk about how distancing yourself away from your friends is known as punishing yourself and that its exactly what Mike did when Will went to Lenora? Because he never really got to apologize and so he hid in the basement, which is surrounded in reminders of his friends, and just played a game nonstop, mindlessly? Like... My poor boy :(

I relate so much to Mike 'I refuse to acknowledge my feelings' 'what do you mean I have emotions' 'I know I'm having a feeling right now, but I do not have the emotional range to figure out which one it is, so into the bottle of repression it goes' 'i can be mean to my friends but if you're mean to my friends be prepared to die' Wheeler.

ok yeah i see it
its sad that its come to this but seeing the contrast since we gained 14k has been tough like some of you really carried that ugly hatred and negativity through here from wherever yall came from. (go back)(please.)
i remember a post once expressed that due to the way new people (apparently 'from twitter') shared their opinion (which was unpleasant at best, antagonistic at worst) they felt it necessary to gatekeep and i honestly wouldn't be opposed to that idea?? bc wtf is wrong with some of you. genuinely.
first and foremost, tumblr has become a comfort space for bylers, so do your best not to disrupt the already established peaceful community built here ? ??
(tl;dr stop using byler as a tag to shit on either/any characters, literally go away u weirdo)

Wait a second. Lonnie saying Will has "never been very good at taking care of himself" vs Mike always being the one whose self-reliant and takes care of others
Will has Joyce and Jonathan to take care of him, he didn't have to take care of himself as a child, he could be a kid when Lonnie wasn't being an ass.
Then we have Mike, where we have Karen saying "he'll come to me when he's ready" when, if your 12 year old is suffering the loss of his childhood best friend, you as the parent need to be the one reaching out to them. We have Mike clearly not having a close bond with Nancy, and not going to his mother unless he's at his absolute limit. We have Mike clothing and housing and generally taking care of another 12 year old when he's already living in an absolute nightmare.
Something something a kid "taking care of himself" is what abusers want, that Will didn't have that emotional neglect from his whole family because he had Joyce and Jonathan, but Mike takes care of himself because his family doesn't emotionally support him.

Volume 2 spoilers, also kinda long.
The "confession" monologue wasn't what it seems. Although at first glance it seems that it really is a loss for byler, I'd argue that it's actually a win. Reason? The monologue is weird and ooc if it's a confession to Jane. But it makes more sense if it's a confession to Will disguised as a confession to Jane. Let's break down the scene.
It starts with Jane struggling against Henry Creel. The rest of cali crew are trying to save her, but it isn't working. Will then says, "Mike, don't stop, okay you're the heart, okay remember that, you're the heart!"
So Will tells Mike he's the heart, so he has to let his heart out. But obviously what's in his heart isn't romantic love for Jane. It's platonic love, strong platonic love, but platonic love that isn't what he think she wants. So he has to give her romantic love. I think, he's been sort of realizing that he's gotten his feelings for Will and Jane mixed up over this season. But no way is he going to say he doesn't love Jane romantically now. So, he says his feelings for Will and says them like they're feelings for Jane.
He starts off by reassuring Jane that he's there with her. And then, after a sort of pause, he blurts out he loves her. In a... rather forced way. Trust me, this isn't "I have a hard time saying I love you", this is "I have to say I love you but it's making me feel wrong." Trust me, I know the second very very well.
"I love you, I'm sorry I don't say it more, it's not because I'm scared of you, I'm not, I've never felt that way, never. But I am scared that one day you'll realize you don't need me anymore, and I thought that if I said how I felt it would somehow make that day, hurt more. But the truth is, El, I don't know how to live without you."
Did anyone else catch the glance to the side before he said "hurt more"? From where he was looking, he would have glanced at... Will. He has to look at Will to get out a confession to Jane? Hmm. And let's rephrase this part a little.
"I love you, I'm sorry I don't say it more, it's not because I'm scared of you don't love you, I'm not do, I've never always felt that way, never. But I am scared that one day you'll realize you don't need me anymore, and I thought that if I said how I felt it would somehow make that day, hurt more. But the truth is, El, I don't know how to live without you."
Just removing the obvious allusion to the milkvan fight and one or 2 other parts makes this more romantic. I.e., milkvan doesn't really fit this confession well. But also, this verson also fits byler well. The disconnect right now is that they both think the other loves someone else. And Mike doesn't know why Will is becoming more and more distant, but he's scared. He knows Will has relied on him in the past, but he's not doing that anymore, and that hurts.
And, well, this is the 80s, if a miracle happens and Will does love him back, being in a relationship would put them at more risk against homophobes. And if Mike confessed, and Will didn't love him back, there would be a chance of Mike being hated. (This wouldnt happen, but Mike doesn't know that for certain). And losing Will would be the most painful thing. So honestly, in his situation, without the foresight of us viewers, the safest thing is to lie and ignore how he loves Will.
Now, onto the very very inflammatory line, "My life started the day i met you in the woods." Now, in context of Milkvan's first meeting, yeah that wouldn't be a very good day. But if your life started the day you met someone, wouldn't saying hello, or asking to be their friend, be the best thing you've ever done. Mike's life started when he met the one he loves. But it wasn't Jane who started his life, it was Will. He's trying to say his feelings for Will and disguise them as feelings for Jane, and in the moment he's. Not really thinking about how the first meeting situations were different.
Let's ignore the shirt remark for now. "And I knew right then and there, in that moment, I loved you. And I've loved you every day since. I love you on your good days, I love you on your bad days, I love you with your powers, I love you without your powers, I love you for exactly who you are. You're my superhero! And, I can't lose you!"
Interesting word choice here. You love her without her powers, yet she's your "superhero". Once again, we have him idealizing her for her powers, regardless of what else he is saying. And actually, has he always loved her every day since? Did he love her when Will's fake body was found and he yelled at her "What's wrong with you?" twice? Did he love her when he called her a weapon to fight against the monsters? Did he love her in season 3 when he wasn't upset about the breakup, just offended?
However, if we ignore the bits about powers, this does hold true about Will. He loves Will so much he does everything in his power to save him from the monsters again and again. He loves Will when they're playing D&D together, he loves Will when he's upset over Mike's bullshit, he loves Will so much he refuses to believe he's dead when he has pretty much no evidence he's alive, he loves Will so much he can't lose him. He loves Will for exactly who he is, and is only able to "be in love" with Jane when he puts her on a pedestal.
"You can do anything! You can fly, you can move mountains, I really believe that, I really do! But right now, you just have to fight, okay?" More superhero, and the heart of the confession. He needs her to fight on and keep living, he's saying what he has to to keep her alive and fighting.
Now, this is all well and good, but where is the proof this is the angle we should be looking at? Because this isn't the first scene byler has been hidden by mileven. When Will showed the painting, he confessed his own feelings to Mike but pretended it was Jane's feelings. Who says that Mike can't be confessing to Will, but pretending he's confessing to Jane? This only adds to the numerous times in past seasons Mike has, in a way, used Jane as a surrogate for Will. And I'm not saying that's a good thing, but it's what's been happening.
Essentially, while the confession may appear to be pro mileven, it's actually pro byler. Do not lose hope everyone!

I know we talk about how Will is super selfless, but we should be talking about Mike too.
Throughout season 1, he gave everything he had to find Will. When Dustin's baby teeth were on the line, he threw himself into the quarry without hesitation. Every time he's hurt Will, he always takes all the blame, even if Will is equally at fault.
And yeah, he's kind of mean, but being kind takes effort. Will has his mom, and Jonathan, and Mike to rely on and provide support. Mike really only has Will. And with his bad mental state factoring in, it's no wonder hes a bit of an ass.
His selfish moments? All have to do with his struggling. Being mean to Max? She's a replacement for Jane, it's totally not that he's jealous Will likes her, he totally doesnt feel uncomfortable being the only one who doesnt. Abandoning his friends, especially Will, for Jane? Thats what he's supposed to do, because he's such a straight man who totally wouldn't rather be with his best friend Will. And... that's it, actually? That's really the worst he's done. And even with that, he apologized.
What really shows how he has no support is his month in the basement. He's lost Will, his only support, and he just. Falls apart. He doesn't leave his room when his mom tries, he stays in the basement playing video games all day to numb himself, isolates from his friends for a whole month. He really only gets close to his old self when Eddie takes him in, but even then, it's not Will. It still isn't enough for him to fully be himself.
And you can't give from an empty cup, blood can't flow from an unbeating heart.

Call me crazy but I think I just realized why Mike was so weird when seeing Will at the airport. (Ft my friend on discord)
Last time he saw Will he was shorter, soft faced and overall cute
Yknow pretty boy vibes
Tumblr media
But after a single year
Will has changed
And he's not cute anymore
Oh no no no no
He is buff, tall, confident and chisel faced
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that takes Mike extremely off guard. Everything is so different. How does he hug him, does he compliment his appearance, does he make a joke about his height? And he doesn't know the answer so he takes time to take those thoughts into mind.
Tumblr media
And then realizing how awkward the hug was;
Tumblr media
he makes small talk, only making it more awkward.
Tumblr media
(By the way as someone who is one of the tallest in my friend group, hugging a friend who used to be way shorter than you takes a while to get used to. That hug that Mike gave Will is extremely relatable lmao)

Mike Wheeler represents Queers who have the most emotional and atrocious internal battle between being who they are and the problems that accompany it.
Mike Wheeler represents the in perfect, flawed, and ugly side of emotional angst when you figure out- no you can't change who you are even if you REALLY want to.
Mike Wheeler represents teenagers who are emotional not matured yet and still just a kid figuring shit out.

I believe in Mike. Seriously. Season 1 and 2 he was such a loving best friend he CARED SO MUCH. He didn't just turn asshole. He's struggling. Emotionally and internally he just cant bring himself to try with El nor give her what he wants as stated he's IN HIS era. He's playing D&D and is giving less and less of a shit of how "lame" and "unpopular" he is (Eddie inspiring him i think.) Im not gonna doubt it anymore. He is queer and this pretending shit is killing him. Mike I see you. Mike I get it.

Theory: Mike as Kas the Bloody-handed.
This theory is more multiple theories in one. How Vecna controls people, Gay Mike + byler being the key, and Mike completing his hero arc.
Before I'll go into this, I'll explain "kas the bloody handed" in case anyone doesn't know what I'm referencing. In DnD lore, Vecna has a right-hand, Kas. He trusted Kas and gave him power, most relevant is the Sword of Kas. Kas betrayed Vecna, send him to the Veil of Shadows, and used the sword of kas to cut out his hand and eye. Essentially, Kas defeats Vecna with the power Vecna gives him. Also Kas is a vampire lord.
There are multiple theories on who Kas is. Some popular choices are Jane, Eddie, Billy, and Will. All of these characters in some way are connected to Vecna (or have a strong possibility to be connected to Vecna in Eddie's case). Jane and Billy have already completed much of the Kas arc, in terms of getting power from Vecna (Jane was guided by Henry, Billy got power from being possessed), then using that power to significantly harm Vecna. Will and Jane have the strongest connection to Vecna, with Henry having an interest in both of them.
However, I think Mike is Kas. Why? As of now, he doesn't have any special connection to Vecna, certainly not any special power. However, there are multiple reasons why I think so.
The first reason is that Mike is a paladin. There are multiple reasons in this post that Mike being a paladin is significant, the most relevant at the moment is that a paladin is a holy knight who wields a sword. Kas's sword is an essential symbol of him, and while Hopper had this cool moment with the sword, and various characters have used the nail-bat, Mike has been associated with swords since day one. This is emphasized in season 4, where in the painting Mike is front and center challenging the monster with his sword.
How would Mike end up being Vecna's right hand? Vecna's powers often include bad memories. When Billy was found in the storm in his mind, Jane had to go through his worst memories. Ms. Driscoll mentioned her late husband and how the house is quieter with him gone shortly before she became possessed. Heather's father is a misogynistic journalist, and we see him shaming her mother for drinking shortly before he and his wife are possessed, implying a toxic home life.
When Henry kills he goes after people's worst memories, who's to say he doesn't do the same when possessing them? Trapping them in their agony so they can't resist. We see how Billy was able to break free, Jane was able to be kind to him, and that kindness shocked Billy so much he was able to break free of Vecna's hold, away from the despair Henry locked him in.
Many people, myself included, have thought of Mike being vecna'd, but that never happened in season 4. What if that's because he isn't being targeted to be killed, but to be used as a puppet against Will? We know Henry has an interest in Will, and they're still connected. We know Mike is in an extremely bad place mentally. With Mike being Vecna'd, they'd only have enough time to show a couple flashes before he's saved from dying. If he's possessed, and my possession theory is correct, we'd have enough time to see multiple fully fleshed out memories in multiple episodes. With how complex Mike's mental state is, it would take more then a couple flashes for the general audience to see what's going on.
Furthermore, this would also enable the "byler is the key" theory. We've seen the "Will and Mike are roller skate shoe size 10, 10+10=20, byler saves the day" theory, but I haven't seen any theories of how they save the day. What if this is how? Mike is a paladin, and paladins can only be healed by clerics. Mike is possessed by Vecna, reliving his bad thoughts and regrets over and over, Will saves him through the power of love, Mike defeats Vecna as Kas. Additionally, in the dnd game in the beginning of season 4, Mike is zeroed out. This could reference him being possessed, taken out of the game. But a cleric could resurrect him, bring him back to fight again.
Additionally, Mike being a paladin serves yet another purpose, possibly the most important one. Mike is a leader and a hero. As his arc has gone on, hes become worse and worse, trapped in his bad thoughts, hurting people because he desperately wants to be needed. But he's still the paladin. Mike being the one to save the day, learning to but aside his fear and guilt and be a hero, defeat his inner demons, would complete his arc. Mike needs to be needed, and what better way to show him being needed then have him deliver the final blow?
