Stefan Pasborg - Ritual Dances - Stravinsky arranged for jazz big band
Danish drummer/composer Stefan Pasborg grew up in a household of ballet dancers, allowing him to have an intimate relationship with their lifestyle and performances. One of his first formative musical experiences was witnessing a performance of Igor Stravinsky’s legendary ballet, The Rite of Spring, by The Danish Royal Ballet. The experience embedded a love for Stravinsky’s work that has manifested in Pasborg’s new recording, Ritual Dances. Even though his compositions were seen as dangerously revolutionary when they premiered, Igor Stravinsky’s music has inspired listeners for generations. His many works have become part of the canon for many philharmonic orchestras but are still presented in more challenging programs. Stravinsky was a key figure in avant-garde symphonic writing, but it was his ballets, The Rite of Spring, The Firebird, and Petrushka, that solidified his legend. The Rite of Spring and The Firebird were the two ballets that inspired Pasborg to reinterpret the Stravinsky’s work for a jazz big band. Ritual Dances takes music from these two works as a basis for Pasborg’s re-structuring. The pieces are heard performed by two large ensembles: the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra on two live cuts and Blood Sweat Drum+Bass for the complete studio recording. The bands are augmented by a number of soloists and electronic musicians. Stefan Pasborg - drums Anders Banke - tenor sax (tracks 3, 5, 6, 8, 9), clarinet (tracks 2, 3, 4, 6, 7) Anders Filipsen - keyboards (tracks 2-10) Fredrik Lundin - tenor sax (tracks 3, 4, 10) Goran Kajfes - trumpet (track 6) Jeppe Kjellberg - guitar (tracks 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10) Jeppe Tuxen - Hammond B3 organ (tracks 6, 8) Jussi Kannaste - tenor sax (tracks 1, 11) Mikael Myrskog - Moog bass (tracks 1, 7, 8, 11) Rune Harder Olesen - percussion (tracks 7, 10) Seppo Kantonen - keyboards (tracks 1, 11) Ståle Storløkken - Hammond B3 organ (track 5) UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra (tracks 1 & 11): Ville Vannemaa - conductor Mikko Mäkinen - soprano, alto sax Sampo Kasurinen - tenor sax, flute Teemu Salminen - tenor sax, bass clarinet Max Zenger - baritone sax, bass clarinet Marko Portin - flute Teemu Mattsson - trumpet Timo Paasonen - trumpet Tomi Nikku - trumpet Tero Saarti - trumpet Kasperi Sarikoski - trombone Mikko Mustonen - trombone Pekka Laukkanen - trombone Mikael Långbacka - bass trombone Aarne Riikonen - percussion Blood Sweat Drum+Bass (tracks 2-10): Jens Christian "Chappe" Jensen - conductor, saxophones (track 9) Michael Mølhede - trumpet, flugelhorn Bent Hjort - trumpet, flugelhorn Malte Pedersen - trumpet, flugelhorn René Damsbak - trumpet, flugelhorn Ole Visby - soprano sax, clarinet, bass clarinet Julie Kjaer - alto sax, flute, alto flute Jacob Rønne Danielsen - tenor saxophone, contrabass clarinet, clarinet Nikolaj Schneider - tenor sax, clarinet Harald Langåsdalen - baritone sax, clarinet Jens Kristian Bang - trombone Jonathan Bruun Meyer - trombone Kirstine Kjaerulff Ravn - trombone Jonathan Henneveld - bass trombone Rasmus Svale Kjaergård Lund - tuba Sisse Foged Hyllestad - bass Magnus Lindgaard Jochumsen - percussion Søren Lyngsø Knudsen - electronics

Eye of Melian is the brainchild of Dutch songwriter and producer Martijn Westerholt, known for Delain and Within Temptation. As the main songwriter of the metal band Delain, Martijn wanted an outlet to create lush orchestral fantasy music. In 2017, he teamed up with American lyricist Robin La Joy, a life-long fantasy enthusiast who spends much of her time immersed in books, particularly the works of Tolkien. Their mutual passion for fantasy-inspired music led them to the creation of Eye of Melian.
Eye of Melian’s ethereal and symphonic music has been described as movie score-like - unfolding epic and elegant storyscapes in the listener’s mind. Successful Finnish solo artist Johanna Kurkela’s angelic voice quickens the fantasy to full life. She is also known for her work in Auri, Altamullan Road, and Tuomas Holopainen’s album “Music Inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge."
Also contributing to the project is Finnish orchestral arranger and producer Mikko P. Mustonen who has worked on many successful releases in various genres. It is his incredible talent in classical arranging that adds the final magical touch to the music.
The EoM crew - Martijn the heartbeat, Robin the soul, Johanna the voice, and Mikko the skeleton - aim to craft music which takes the listener away to sojourn dreamy landscapes and other-worldly realms. Their debut album is expected to be released in 2022 with the first single in fall of 2021.
The following excerpt from one of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien imaginatively and beautifully embodies the essence and spirit of what the music of Eye of Melian aspires to be.
“Melian was a Maia, of the race of the Valar. She dwelt in the gardens of Lórien, and among all his people there were none more beautiful than Melian, nor more wise, nor more skilled in songs of enchantment. It is told that the Valar would leave their works, and the birds of Valinor their mirth, that the bells of Valmar were silent and the fountains ceased to flow, when at the mingling of the lights Melian sang in Lórien. Nightingales went always with her, and she taught them their song; and she loved the deep shadows of the great trees. She was akin before the World was made to Yavanna herself; and in that time when the Quendi awoke beside the waters of Cuiviénen she departed from Valinor and came to the Hither Lands, and there she filled the silence of Middle-earth before the dawn with her voice and the voices of her birds.”

Helsingin Sanomat reported (siirryt toiseen palveluun) on Tuesday the opinions of Jussi Sane, a THL employee currently consulting for the World Health Organisation.
He said that the pandemic will continue for as long as people believe in it, but that the burden on healthcare systems — in his opinion the crucial metric — was starting to decline and that we are therefore nearing the end of the Covid pandemic.
On Wednesday, the paper carries (siirryt toiseen palveluun) responses to that idea. It's not quite so simple, according to Mikko Pietilä from the Southwest Finland hospital district. He notes that there have been more fatalities in the last three months than at any previous point in the pandemic, so he isn't calling it the end just yet.
Asko Järvinen from Helsinki and Uusimaa hospital district, who said on Tuesday that the Omicron wave may have peaked in the region, said the most effective restrictions were still necessary to ease the burden on healthcare services.
"It may be that we have seen the peak in the south, but it still isn't over," said Järvinen.
THL Director of Health Security Mika Salminen, meanwhile, says that it's misleading to talk about the end of the pandemic, because pandemics don't end, but the 'acute stage' might be nearing a better situation, where there's less risk of overloaded hospitals and serious illness.
School nurse shortage
Turku schools are certainly not calling the end of the pandemic, as local paper Turun Sanomat reports (siirryt toiseen palveluun) on Wednesday that 12 schools in the city were without a school nurse on Monday thanks in large part to sick leave.
There is an acute shortage of nurses in the area across schools and health centres, with many routine appointments delayed or cancelled, reports TS.
Some schools are having to send their own nurses to other schools, so regular checkups can happen and some of the gap can be covered at least momentarily.
Wolf hunt in Kuhmo
Helsingin Sanomat has a story (siirryt toiseen palveluun) on a wolf pack in Kuhmo, eastern Finland, which is to be hunted this year. Permission was granted for all eight wolves in the pack to be shot, but that decision is being challenged.
The pack is in one of the most isolated locations in Finland, with a 25km-wide habitat straddling the border with Russia and only one road that's cleared in winter. That is the road that leads to the border.
HS talks to nature photographer Atte Haataja, who says the wolves have not become bolder around humans — he says he has accidentally scared them off many times in recent years while walking or skiing, and was unable to take photos unless hidden.
Wolves in Finland are protected outside of reindeer herding areas in the north, but permits are still issued to shoot them every year. That is to manage the population and to increase people's willingness to live among wolves, but this particular pack is in as wild a location as it's possible to find in Finland.
Haataja therefore wonders where it's possible for wolves to live in Finland, if not in places like this. The permits were granted, according to the Finnish Wildlife Agency that grants them, because the wolves are not counted among the Finnish population as they live partly in Russia.
Therefore their loss will not appear in statistics for Finland, and so the hunt can proceed without reducing the officially recognised population.
Northern Finland Administrative Court is to rule on the appeal against the hunting permits.
Olympian goalie fight
Ilta-Sanomat has the latest on the row over goaltending spots in the Finnish women's ice hockey team ahead of the Beijing Olympics. Noora Räty, a four-time Olympian with two bronze medals to her name, is staying home after she was left out of the squad.
That decision raised eyebrows, to say the least, but coach Pasi Mustonen had an explanation when he announced it last week. Chemistry between the three goaltenders was important, and taking the best three players is not always the best way to do things.
Following the backlash, though, he offered Räty a spot as 'first choice backup' goaltender. Räty would not be part of the squad, but if anything happened to number one Anni Keisala, she would join the team and take up her spot on the ice.
An IS opinion piece (siirryt toiseen palveluun) pointed out the problems with that. Firstly, it's a big vote of no confidence in the number two goaltender, Meeri Räisänen. Secondly, the Chinese authorities have authorised only four flights from Finland to the Olympic bubble.
The last one is on 9 February, before the quarter-finals and semi-finals are played, leaving Finland with a second-best option if Keisala was injured after that flight leaves Helsinki.
Mustonen complained that Räty did not respond to the offer, but IS is sceptical about the offer itself. The paper suggests that if relations between Räty and Mustonen have deteriorated so far he had to drop her, he should have simply said so and taken the flack.
As things stand he has undermined the other goaltenders, fuelled the media row and ensured that Finland have more to lose than to gain from the Olympic tournament. That's not a happy place for any Finnish team.
As for Räty, IS reports (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that she published a picture on Instagram (siirryt toiseen palveluun) yesterday looking carefree and happy, along with the text: 'Feeling FREE!
"I won’t give up because of one bad chapter in my life. I will keep going… my story doesn’t end here!"'

Kärpät’s season in a nutshell:
Fire Mikko Manner, maybe? Because for the first three months Kärpät’s game was all over the place and the powerplay never worked (OKAY, IT STILL DOESN’T WORK, HOW THE HELL IS IT 9%). But right when assistant coach Lauri Mikkola took the reigns in Manner’s national team related absence, the team has won 12 of its 14 games. Even Aleksi Mustonen who had about 1+2 in the first 25 games of the season has finally found the inner pointmaker in himself. (Maybe there is hope for the Rangers fans.)

Dance With the Dragon/ Stoker Verse One-Shot
Mina Murray was well aware that what she had done was wrong in the eyes of men and God. She was engaged to a handsome man with a promising future; Jonathan Harker. They had been sweet-hearts for years and when he proposed, Mina could not imagine her life with anyone else.
But as a realtor, his job took him all over the country and beyond at times. It was lonely, but she loved Jonathan dearly. It had been during one of his trips to Romania that Mina had met a very dark and mysterious stranger. A prince... He was tall, eyes of forest green and a nature about him that was highly seductive and toxic.
Tumblr media
Vlad Dracula...
He had come into her life when she was feeling a little lonely and he was the perfect distraction, or so she believed. Mina was not a fool to think that Vlad was not used to having women fall for him; he just had that aura about him. Between their dinner conversations and the evenings they had danced well into the morning, the connection...the attraction between them was a slow burn into passion.
Mina had given her virgin body to Vlad, basking in his touch and reaching the very peaks of pleasure within his skilled embrace. She had fallen to lust and for three nights and days, they could not be separated. Yet when Dracula told her he had to leave for a while on the fourth day, Mina felt the guilt of her actions weigh upon her soul.
The woman had to leave. But the dark Prince was a step ahead of her, finding that he had locked the orient door to her escape. Mina had not known the gravity of her actions! She needed to escape... So, she greeted Dracula warmly, inviting her into the warmth of her body. A distraction to grasp what she really wanted; the key within his pocket.
~ ~ ~
With the rise of morning, Mina awoke to find Vlad gone, but his jacket was still on the floor. Dressing quickly and searching for the bronze key, she felt instant relief upon grasping the instrument of her escape. Slipping the chain around her neck, the key sat between her breasts and out of sight. Hurrying down the vast hallways and staircase, she could see her freedom within her grasp.
But the dragon was ready for her.
Vlad materialized in front of her, causing Mina to gasp in surprise and fear.
Tumblr media
“I know why you're here.. don't try to escape, my dear. You've been naughty I know, by trying to steal something of my own.” His voice was more amused and predatory than angry.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“Don’t lie!”
Mina talked slowly and calmly, though her heart was beating fast within her chest. “ ...nor what you're talking about and sir there's no reason to shout! I saw the key but didn't steal!”
Vlad smirked wickedly, “You saw the key and tried to steal!” Before Mina had a moment to react to his movement, Vlad’s hand shot out and grasped the chain around her neck, forcefully exposing the key between the two of them. “I see...what do we have here?”
“Nothing!”
The Prince ripped the chain from Mina’s neck in a snapping motion, “ Now I know why you're here...You are a mischief thief. But if you want the key, you need to earn it, my dear..”
Mina’s blue eyes looked at him not knowing what this monster would do to her; would his jaws devour her whole? His fangs pierce her flesh and bask within her blood? Vlad came forward and grasped his hand around her waist, the other grabbing her hand as if to dance. How could he think of anything at the moment, let alone dancing?
Fear danced within her eyes as his green orbs glimmered with wicked intentions. He was playing her... Although she was fearful for what he would do, Mina was ashamed to feel desire build within her core. Dracula’s hand on her waist slipped closer to the apex of her thighs, fingers splayed open for a moment before curving to the core of her desire. Against her will, Mina moaned, knowing that he could make her body feel things...most pleasurable things.
Tumblr media
Finding her inner strength, Mina shoved him away from her roughly, “I think we’re done now!”
The dragon only chuckled, “OH, you think so?”
“I have to go!”
“You’re not going anywhere.” He was not at all put off by the mortals will to escape.
“You have a key that you don’t even need. You’re standing between me and my life.”
“That is why I’m standing here between you and your life.”
Mina shivered under the gaze of his piercing eyes as Vlad advanced forward, taking her back in his arms, continuing the dance she so abruptly had stopped before. “May I have this dance? I’ll show you my best moves...” There was a power within his gaze as Mina could feel her body betray her mind. Within her mind, she could see the passionate tangles that had occurred between she and the dragon.
Legs entwined, hips pressed tightly as they tangled upon his silken red sheets. Her head thrown back in passion, Vlad’s mouth upon every sensitive part of her flesh, fingers and tongue... Mina moved effortlessly with Vlad in his arms, his visions trying to entice her into staying. But how could she...?
Once more stopping the dance, Mina tried to spark empathy within his heart. Placing her hand on his chest, the other moving towards the key in his hand, she pleaded so softly, “ I just need the key..I'm trying to get out of here. I know that it's a bad deal and how disappointed you must feel. But please help me to escape...”
They key was touching the tips of her fingertips...it was almost in her hand! Yet it was futile. Vlad grasped her wandering hand and grasped her wrist in his tight grip. There was no escaping the dragon... The dark Prince picked Mina up in his arms and with the speed of the devil, vanished back up to the chambers that had been theirs. Without an ounce of grace, Mina was thrown onto the bed as the door closed behind her, sealing her ‘doom’.
For a dragon does not so easily give up its most precious treasure...
~ ~ ~
Take my all, I surrender, surrender! Look at me and the way I ask for forgiveness, kindness and help! Take my all, I surrender, surrender! Look at me and the way I ask for forgiveness, kindness and help! Take my all, I surrender, surrender! We will die another day, another way Another day... Another way!
