Marine Corps and Navy emblems adorn several panels at the Iwo Jima display in the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Each emblem represents a serviceman who lost their life during the battle.
March 26, 1945, marked the end of the 36-day long battle that resulted in over 26,000 American casualties, including 6,800 killed in action.
The battle for Iwo Jima also saw 27 Medals of Honor awarded to Marine and Navy personnel for gallantry above and beyond the call of duty.

William Nicholas Stone Courtney - 1929-2011
I think the first stirrings I had for any man (as far as I can remember) would have been age 11 or 12, watching Nicholas Courtney playing Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart in Dr Who.
The moustache, the uniform and, above all, the leather gloves. To me he was the height of sophistication.
He was the head of UNIT and carried on playing The Brigadier alongside various incarnations of the Doctor (as well as in Dr Who spin-off shows) almost until he died.
Rarely seen without his leather gloves (I mean, just look at those). He also had a simple rule: when confronted by a monster, he shot it. He shot a lot of monsters throughout the various series.
So if you ever ask me: "Smoky, where does your obsession with leather-gloved men come from?" I shall point you in the direction of this handsome devil.
Oh, and he got ever more handsome as he got older - just look at that marvellous double-chin.

Then fleeing Giedi Prime, being chased and hunted for months across the many planets, by many has a bounty had been placed on him.

Temporarily halting his squad behind the relative shelter of an Amphibious Assault Vehicle, Cpl. Anthony Cucchiara of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, shouts across the street to know the situation of the other members of his platoon, during Operation Phantom Fury, on November 12, 2004.
Kilo Company pushed south on the main thoroughfare through Fallujah, designated Route Henry, where they encountered the heaviest resistance since the assault began four days prior.
