As part of the recent Doom + Doom II compilation port, Legacy of Rust is a brand-new 16-level campaign, split into two parts, created by members of ID Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames. As part of this new campaign, you can now face off against six brand-new monsters in the classic Doom style, with some drawing inspiration from old unused concepts.

Have you ever done the whole spidersona thing? Whats your spideysona?

I have! I don't think I've ever posted about them though. it took me ages to dig up these drawings from last year, but here they are:

this is my spideysona! her name is gwaine stacey, aka spiderspiral. she was intended to be a spiderverse/tma character because I thought that would be fun, she is an avatar of the spiral that got mixed up venom-style with a creature of the web, which gives her a lot more detriments than powers, including random teleportation / dimension-shifting. in her story, her friend paige parker was tortured and eventually killed by a monster of the web, and when gwaine got wrapped up in that business she ended up weirdly linked with the web monster that killed paige. so she's a servant of two horror entities and is never in a stable reality, which as one can imagine is quite the toll. she tries to do good hero-y stuff when she can to off-set the guilt around the fear she incites for the web and the spiral, but that gets complex very quickly, and it would be difficult to consider her even an anti-hero, but she tries to be a good person.

here she is with the sona I made for my partner, perry parker aka mindweaver! perry is a neuroscience student that accidentally stumbles upon a rogue professor doing secret experimentation with mind-control fungus on insects and arachnids, and gets bit by a spider test subject that escaped and gains thrall / limited mind control among other spidey powers. the professor becomes their nemesis when he discovers perry's mutation and proceeds to human testing with the fungus on himself, which makes him into a mushroom monster. perry and the professor become psychically linked through the fungus to the point of feeling each other's pain, and perry has to find a way to stop the professor before the fungus gets completely out of control and/or kills them both.

gwaine ends up in perry's dimension accidentally during one of her random teleportations and grows very attached to them. perry is able to create a mental link between the two of them strong enough that gwaine can use it as a tether to teleport back to them when she gets lost, which is immensely helpful in stabilizing her whole situation, and the two of them fall in love :)

I have no idea how Kingsley’s Blood Hunter and Rogue levels are split, but hear me out……King getting to be there with the rest of the Mighty Nein to fight the Mindweaver. Tealeaf seeing someone try to mind control Yasha or one of his other loved ones, and King just breaks them free immediately and makes sure whoever hurt them feels hell.

Tealeaf never letting anyone else lose their minds and autonomy and sense of self the way that the somnovem tried to tear it all away form him

Lore ideas for Legacy of Rust's demons and weapons.

Shocktrooper: They're only partially possessed and part of their conscious is still self aware, meaning they're on a struggle. This explains their movement and even death scream. One half "join us, human", another half "please kill me, Doomguy. i can't take it anymore".

Mindweaver: Arachnotrons that managed to live past maturity (Even if through fast aging as caused by demonic rituals) and their plasma rifles are magically replaced with chainguns. They became a bit more like their mother.

Ghoul: Either cybernetic Lost Souls or modified left overs from the tech left by dead cybernetic demons. Whether or not they have a consciousness is debatable.

Banshee: Basically, what could happen to a soul if it doesn't became a Lost Soul. Like being tortured souls made of blood that suffer until they die.

Vassago: Coming from deeper layers of Hell and forged by flames. Their fire is hot even by Hell standards.

Tyrant: When cyberdemons are cloned through Hell magic, some fail to develop and became categorized as Tyrants. Making clones of high tier demons like Cybies and SMM's is a very delicate process.

Incinerator: Something the UAC had thought of giving to special clean up teams, as an attempt to clean up evidence and traces of certain activities. But because of how rough things got, they couldn't do it.

Calamity blade: A possible hint of the classic Doomverse having its own version of the Sentinels, who also have some differences from the ones in 2016/DE/TDA.

Anyway, some opinions:

Shocktroopers remind me of the red marine from Scythe. I kinda wish their sprite showed the plasma rifle and they'd even drop it on death but LoR also replaced the cell based weapons with the new ones (even if i think ID24 allows them to coexist)

Mindweavers are ok though they don't have lots to talk about

Ghouls are interesting because of their obvious Doom Bible/Alpha background (also Doom Zero being an official addon in the new ports). Makes sense their hitscan attack is gone, though the idea of a "mind cursing" attack i once suggested something about it to a D3 follow up and "Hellish mirrors".

Banshees seem to be new. Like Doom's equivalent to Quake's Spawn.

Vassago's are interesting because their design is original and their flame attack is like a classic version of the 2016's Cybermancubus' toxic floor, as dropped by a projectile.

Tyrants might as well be the Hellknights to a Cyberdemon's Baron. Their name (as taken from DE) even establishes the idea of weaker Cybies being named "Tyrants". At least the removed horns makes them a bit more visually different. Though in a way, they look pitiful.

Guess Doom has 2 flamethrowers: The unique Flame Belch which is used to farm armor and the "more traditional" Incinerator. I guess this also justifies MetaDoom's Flame Belch damaging both player and demons lol.

And this weapon feels like a "backport" of a concept from modern Doom. Again, if they do put Sentinels in old Doom, make them different from the ones in Slayer games and specially with understanding on aesthetics in certain eras and all. Even different lore like "they're descendents of Earth unlike the ones in DE". The charge mechanic is also novel in classic Doom.

Anyway, if in 10 years we get another port with another new episode, maybe the new ammo type could be SOUL and they get to put the Unmaker and Dark Claw in classic Doom.

Maybe the new demons in that episode could include the winged Imp or a Harbinger of Doom.

Just ‘Quip It! - To Arms Winners

Now, with most of these contests, we have a presupposition that these cards are all designed for standard sets unless someone says others, whether that be us judges or the person submitting. But when a card is submitted that says “This card can be your commander,” you kind of just know it’s not meant to be lumped in with SNC and DMU. As for the rest of that funky little Presence ability, I think I could really see this as an alt commander for a deck, sort of like Shorikai. It’s deceptively powerful, but you need a decent amount of mana for it to start working. To be honest, I might make a decklist for this.

Mindscrew Drone - @misterstingyjack

If I had a nickel for each submission this week that had the line “You control equipped creature,” I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. Anyhow, I appreciate that this is a pretty decent bomb that could work on its own, but honestly is better if you have another creature with evasion. Add to that the meager toughness, and you really want at least something else on the field with it. But given the large effect, rare makes a lot of sense for this, and I’d be more than excited to slot this into my deck.

If I had a nickel for each submission this week that had the line “You control equipped creature,” I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. Anyhow, I appreciate that this is an evasion ability all it’s own, and that most times it’s going to end up being let through rather than blocked. I’m a tad upset it isn’t a phyrexian, despite the watermark and art direction suggesting as such, but I understand given the typeline. Another thing of note is that this disincentivizes attacks towards you, which can be bad gameplay, but because it lacks evasion-blocking abilities, I can let it slide.
