A modern-day hero who fights for girl’s education
Born in Mingora, Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai came to prominence in 2009 after writing about her life during the Taliban occupation of her town Swat Valley and the ban on girls' education. In October 2012, she was shot on the left side of her head in an attack by a Taliban gunman on her school bus. She recovered in Birmingham, UK, where she remained with her family. In 2013, Malala was awarded the International Children's Peace Prize, and in 2014, she became the youngest recipient (17) of the Nobel Peace Prize with Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi. She founded the Malala Fund in 2013, which is dedicated to giving all girls access to twelve years of free, safe, quality education. She recently graduated from Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford, and her portrait hangs proudly in our Gallery.

Celebrating International Women’s Day: Malala Yousafzai
Celebrating Inspirational Women, Happy International Women’s Day! March 8th.
Tumblr media
Born: July 12, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan.
Malala Yousafzai, is a Pakistani female education activist and the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Awarded when she was 17, she is the world's youngest Nobel Prize laureate, and the second Pakistani and the first Pashtun to receive a Nobel Prize.
Malala Yousafzai became an international symbol of the fight for girls’ education after she was shot in 2012 for opposing Taliban restrictions on female education in her home country of Pakistan.
In 2009, she had begun writing a blog under a pseudonym about the increasing military activity in her home town and about fears that her school would be attacked. After her identity was revealed, Malala and her father Ziauddin continued to speak out for the right to education. The Taliban’s attack on Malala on 9 October 2012 as she was returning home from school with her friends received worldwide condemnation. In Pakistan, over 2 million people signed a right to education petition, and the National Assembly ratified Pakistan's first Right to Free and Compulsory Education Bill. After being shot she was airlifted to a Pakistani military hospital and then taken to an intensive care unit in England. After ten days in a medically induced coma, she woke up in a Birmingham hospital in England. In 2013, Malala and her father co-founded the Malala Fund to bring awareness to the social and economic impact of girls' education and to empower girls to demand change. In December 2014, she became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Secretary-General António Guterres designated Malala as a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2017 to help raise awareness of the importance of girl’s education.

MALALA YOUSAFZAI
MALALA YOUSAFZAI
12 July 1997
Malala was born in Mingora, Pakistan into a family of the Sunni Muslim faith, “When I was born, some relatives came to our house and told my mother, ‘Don’t worry, next time you will have a son.’” Her father is a teacher who ran a school, which she and her friends attended. Ziauddin raised his daughter to be brave and determined and said, “I did not clip her wings”.
The Taliban started gaining power in Pakistan who was against girls having an education. When Malala was 11 years old, she started blogging about her life in Pakistan under Taliban. She believed girls deserved an education just as much as boys. She became more well-known and started giving interviews to magazines, newspapers and television.
The Taliban held a meeting and they agreed to kill Malala. On 9 October 2012, Taliban soldiers shot Malala, 15. In the afternoon, Malala and her school fiends boarded the school bus to return home. Two Taliban soldiers stopped the bus and got on board. A Taliban soldier asked, ‘Which one of you is Malala? Speak up, otherwise I will shoot you all’, Malala was identified and then one of the men pointed a pistol at her and shot her. Two other girls on the bus were wounded. The men thought Malala was dead, and fled, but they were wrong, she survived.
Malala remained unconscious for days in a critical condition. Her health slowly restored and was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, London for rehabilitation.
The Taliban stated that they will target her again. They justified their actions and stated that Malala was ‘propagating against Islam.'
When she recovered Malala and her family visited New York City to advocate for education for girls. She went on to write a book (2014) and a documentary was made (2015). She opened a school for girls in Lebanon. She stayed in England due to the risk on her life in her homeland. In Pakistan she has both supporters and critics, in 2015 Pakistan banned her book. She returned to Pakistan in 2018 and continues to advocate for the rights of education for girls.
