Concepts of Visual Language - Evaluation
This unit of work has been an invaluable experience for me, allowing me to explore and redefine my approach to design that led me to an exciting new outcome within a program that I had initially overlooked as a designer. The progression of my chosen theme throughout this unit has been a transformative journey, each step, from thorough research to the discovery of new programs, has played a crucial role in creating a well-informed final outcome.
My deep-rooted love for motion design and my desire to explore code-based design motivated me throughout this unit, however, I must admit that I initially became fixated on a single concept, which hindered my progress. After careful consideration, I managed to steer myself onto the right path, ultimately learning code-based generative art through the use of TouchDesigner. This experience filled me with pride and opened my eyes to the world of installation design.
Given more time, I would have loved to delve deeper into the realm of installation design and physically create the installation space. I also recognise the potential for further development in terms of branding and promotional aspects of the installation however, considering the limited timeframe and the challenge of learning an entirely new design program in less than a month, I am content with my outcomes. Moreover, I have received extremely positive feedback from both my peers and the intended audience, who acknowledged that my installation successfully evokes a sense of panic and fear.
Throughout this unit, I consistently prioritised my target audience, ensuring that their experience was at the forefront of my design choices. This approach allowed me to create the best possible result and stay true to my objectives. Overall, this unit has pushed me into new areas of design that I hadn't even considered three months ago, igniting a deep passion within me for this new field. It will undoubtedly strengthen my portfolio of work and open up exciting opportunities for future endeavors.
As I move forward, I recognise the importance of keeping my mind open to diverse design solutions, embracing different approaches and considering various solutions to the same problem will undoubtedly make me a better designer. I am committed to continuous growth and development in my design practice, always seeking innovative and impactful solutions.

Final Evaluation of the term
Overall, I have enjoyed this term especially working with EPM that was one of the highlights. Getting to write our own brief for our mini FMP was a daunting task but ended up being a project which I felt myself progress in.
Working with EPM was a great experience, learning about all the different avenues you can go down with this course was eye-opening. I found myself looking more the exhibition side of things and wondering if this was a potential route to go down in the future. This brief was a group project which was also a fun challenge, usually I'm not the biggest fan of working in groups because I always worry about not putting enough into it. However, we got to choose our groups for this project which helped massively. We all communicated well and pulled our own weight to produce an excellent outcome which we were all really proud of.
CVL was a very challenging project at some points, this was our first time writing our own brief so it was all very new. The one thing I really liked was being able to combine my own passions into my work, this made it much easier to feel motivated when the project got a bit difficult. I am really proud of what I've produced for this project and feel it has made me get more of an understanding on what I like and don't like to do.
One piece of feedback I receive a lot after units is to do more experimenting and have fun in the experimentation process. I feel that I have progressed massively in this especially in CVL. I've found that I really enjoy creating physical experiments and then manipulating them digitally. Usually, I feel quite stuck around the experimentation part of a project so I just go for the first thing I make but this time I've tried to experiment more thoroughly to achieve a range of designs that I can choose the most successful from.

mp – imagery.
thinking about how i could create visual interest throughout my outcome.
for my mini fmp I used duo-toning to the existing imgery, making it more of my own. I thought that could work quite well in this outcome since it make the imagery become more apart of the design than just an image. it would allow me to push my editorial to introduce something more visually exciting.
before I started applying duo-toning to imagery I first wanted to think of what colour represent each category within the books. so for angels of death I thought blue, since they are mostly medical professionals and blue is recognised as a medical colour. for black widows I chose green to represent poison, and how we stereotypically view poison from what we've consumed through media. for more male methods or brutal methods I chose red, as I think it comes back to what red represents which is very bold and showy which is what male serial killers are known for.
Tumblr media
I then applied the colour to the imagery by first making all the images that weren't black and white already, black and white. I then tired by adding threshold for a more contemporary look, removing unneeded details, but it was quite hard to pick a position in the threshold that made the subject easy to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then removed the threshold in replace of a gradient map which I think made for a better look. the only thing I would want to look out for if I use this at all is the type of image. for example kristen gilbert (blue) is behind a dark background compared to mary anne cotton (green) and aileen wuornos (red) who aren't which makes for a more cohesive look. the background being dark makes the image become more distinctive and looks like a blue box.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then applied these to some quick spread ideas that allowed me to start visualising how it would look in context.

FMP : Mini Pecha Kucha
Presentation Slides & Case Studies (LO1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pecha Kucha Presentation
During my Mini Pecha Kucha presentation, I discussed my new idea of Nature Healing & Slow Living. According to a study 60% of young adults feel overwhelmed under pressure and experience high stress levels. Another study discovered that 95% of people said that their mood significantly improved after spending time outdoors. I decided to connect these two ideas together to alleviate stress in young adults through nature healing and slow living.
As a part of my case study research, I looked at projects such as Seed Saga, Girls Just Wanna Grow Plants & Slow Brew. Each of these projects adopt a unique way to solve our increasing disconnect from nature.
This project is based around studies that show young people in the UK want to feel connected to natural surroundings, but struggle due to environmental, economic, cultural or contextual reasons.
A recent YouGov poll shows 77 per cent of people ages 18-35 would like to be more connected, while another 2022 study revealed that UK Citizens measure low for their feeling of oneness with the natural world (the study pointed out how this has a real impact on the likelihood of achieving a sustainable future too).

Liminal space - Detective game
To start my research I began to add pins to a new Pinterest board with my mind map in mind to get an idea for what I wanted for my game. Towards the bottom, you can see I started with more stylized, Japanese style artwork, but I started trying to push into more into a space setting. Moving up, I started looking more towards space and colourful stylized cityscapes. As I tried to link the images closer to a false reality and space, themes, it moved more into blade runner territory towards the middle until I finally got to a vibe I was happy with. I’ve gotten to a lot of retro futurism artwork and an aesthetic I dubbed, space greenhouse which feels like an extremely interesting theme to work on. I’d also been looking into some detective games and how effective they can be at masking certain story aspects in a way that makes a game for fun and mysterious. So the first Idea I've landed on is a detective game set in a abandoned botanical space station, light years away from the earth, as you have to uncover the mystery of the passengers disappearance. I've chosen this because I have always held a fondness of space and a massive love of any botanical setting. Although I haven’t played many detective games, I used to love the sherlock Holmes series and generally love solving puzzles.
Tumblr media
Just for the art style of this game I would love to start exploring retro futurism as a genre. I also started looking a lot into the space botany themes I mentioned before. A subcategory of retro futurism based on more of the colonization of space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This mind map gives a little look into what I was thinking when trying to create a moodboard and this idea. Off of the base game idea, I have: Retro, Mechanics, Criminology and Space as the key themes. At face value, they may seem like strange themes to take from the mindmap but I’ve done it because I think this is what my idea boils down to.
I’ve chosen space because I’ve always been fascinated with it in concept and as a setting, along with the freedom it carries from a developmental standpoint. I’ve taken, Liminality, Setting and time off of this. Time is a common theme that comes up with space in a Science fiction setting. It opens up a lot of possibilities in the detective aspect of the game. I could essentially have some deduction or evidential mechanics similar to that of the Obra Dinn, utilising flashbacks to find clues and piece them together. This could also be useful for a game that spans multiple time periods in it’s exploration mechanics. I then wrote in the the links to 70’s detective media.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I put setting because that is what space is going to be for my game (the setting) and I wanted to explore what I could do with it. Another aspect of my life I wanted to look at introducing to this idea was botany. A lot of my house is dominated by plants and a lot of my family are obsessed with gardening. This lead to me writing down the space greenhouse setting to get to botany, plants and Mechanisms against nature. The contrast between the artificial and Natural was a big theme for my FMP last year which would mean I am quite familiar with creating that vibe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Liminality is going to be a given with an idea due to the setting being so far away from any life, but it still helps having some knowledge on the topic of liminality and how to achieve it effectively. I put it on my mind map because I am already pretty well acquainted with it from my last topic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both my Criminology and Mechanics themes were both to do with the detective aspects of the game, and I used them to flesh out what type of gameplay I wanted. I landed on using mini games like the cross referencing one from the Spiderman game to gather and link evidence. Throughout the game, I am going to give the player the option to make an accusation as to what happened to the passengers of the spaceship at any point, but the more evidence they have gathered, the more accurate it’s going to be, similar to the game Paradise Killer. There would also be the option for interplanetary travel by flying a life ship. Expanding the possibilities for different settings, making the game more scalable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Off of retro I had all of my art styles and inspiration. Although cel shading like that in The Wolf Among us, I think trying to achieve the retro futuristic would be more effective.

Teaser
a homeless man have been blocked way by three staff in supermarket. He is suspected of shoplifting.
Synopsis
The man is sitting in the police station in nervous, and faced to the police officer. He is closing his eyes slowly, and recalling the most difficult memory for him......
Story
The homeless man is finishing check-out in the supermarket and ready to move out. At the exit, three staff in the supermarket are reached and blocked his way. The man is nervous and at a loss. He do not know why they find him, judging from their expressions, something bad might be about to happen.
Excuse me Sir, you are suspected of shoplifting. Please let us check your bag and other personal belongings. One of the supermarket staff said to the homeless man.
They took the shopping bag of the man and shaked out the contents in it. The sound of heavy metal colliding on the ground. One of the staff picked up a canned beer, it is not what they want.
Where did you hide it? The box of meat you stolen. The staff who picked the beer up asked. From his expression, the staff is convinced that the fact of shoplifting by the man.
Surrounding people are whispering. The staff's words were loud and powerful, and inadvertently guided the public opinion. The man felt the suspicious eyes of the surrounding people shining on his back, like countless sharp thorns piercing his body deeply. With low self-esteem and cowardice, he finally couldn't bear the pressure at this moment and exploded.
I didn't do anything wrong! I didn't steal anything! Please! Trust me!
At this time, the other staff have also spoke. He explained the reason why the man was approached today. A few minutes ago, they are in control room and saw that man is standing in front of the refrigerator and quietly put a box of meat into his backpack. Therefore, the staff have locked the appearance of suspected target and contacted one of the security in front of exit by walkie talkie, to prevent the man escape from the supermarket.
Then, they ran out of control room and reached as soon as possible to block his way at the exit, until now. However, one thing very weird is the dissappearing backpack. According to the supermarket staff's description, the man put the meat into his backpack. When they found the man, there was no backpack in his personal belongings. Instead, there is a supermarket shopping bag that could be seen everywhere, as well as a can of sardines and a can of beer in the shopping bag.
Although they did not find the box of meat that the man stole or his backpack, they still suspected that the man had a partner in the crime.
Afterwards, they called the police. In the police station, the police officer have asked and take notes with the supermarket staff and the suspected men separately. Immediately after, the police officer compared the notes from both sides. He initially judged that the suspect is innocent.
Animation Settings
I would like to make this 2D animation in different methods of materials but mainly in digital. Based on the advice and suggestions I got last time, I think it is important to show diffrent texture on its specific scenes. I am satisfied with the part I shot with the paper-based mini police station and the ceiling fan made by ice cream sticks. Therefore, I may keep the style in my first draft of animatic and trying to add more contents and dialogues to it.
Tumblr media
As the first draft film I inicially designed, the film is basically coloured with blue. I firmly believe in the principle that less is more, so I am prefer to use 1 or 2 types of colours to build the story. Therefore, it will be not a 'colourful' film in this way.
Characters
Initial character designs on sketchbook:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the reference of the supermarket uniforms, I compared both in Sainsbury's and Audi and I found the latter is most similar to the design in my imagine. Therefore, I would like to choose the Audi employee uniforms as the basis for my character design on supermarket staff.

Final Prototype of how the campaign would work ;
Evaluation for this term :
Overall throughout this term I am feeling a lot happier with the work i have produced. Beginning with the group project i feel as though our group worked really well together we made sure to use eachothers strengths throughout. The research in my mini FMP i found was more successful due to the fact i was a lot more interested that i have been in the past about previous projects. The concept of what i came up with I am really happy with aswell. There are definatley elements I can see could have been pushed and i feel as though the area lacking would be my final presentation of the concept and animation. I really wasnt sure how was the best way to display this and this is something i should look into ahead of time in the future. Id like to focus on how to anlysise my work more professionally in the future and also how to make my presentations more clear and put together.

Responding to learning outcomes
A01: I started the project by researching into different topics relating to climate activism such as the willow project, destruction of the coral reef, microplastics etc. I ended up researching fast fashion and the various negative implications it has on the planet - this is the topic I ended up basing my project on. To inform own designs I also researched into various examples of climate activism and designers that create work similar to my own brief such as the climate crisis font. I also looked at social learning theory in this project in relation to my campaign and thought about how I could expand the audience of my campaign by starting with gen z.
A02: In the workshop with EP//M we created a user persona, we referred to this throughout our design process which allowed us to create a user centered app. This is something I am going I am going to continue to do in the future. Within my mini FMP I pushed myself to be more explorative with my work by working in both digital and physical mediums. I enjoyed being more physical with my work and working with a scanner as it led me to outcomes I am really proud of. Through this I was able to find the medium which works best for my project and target audience. I ended up choosing the hole punching medium as an infographic/visual representation of clothes biodegrading as this made a striking visual which would speak to gen z and work well in my campaign.
A03: Within this project I really pushed myself to research more contemporary design. As I was basing my project on fast fashion/climate activism I thought it was important to do thorough research as this a topic that has been covered many times. I really enjoyed looking at how other designers approached this topic and it helped informed my designs and create something that is unique. I am really proud of my final outcome I feel I have created a professional set of assets that has a consistant visual identity. I think if my campaign was brought to reality it could bring a positive impact to the world by bringing awarness to the environmental impact of fast fashion which would push these large stores/corporations to make an effort to be more environmentally conscious.

Concepts of Visual Language Briefing
Today we were briefed on our new unit which is set out like a mini fmp. This is meant to help us practice and prepare for our final major project in our last year. It's our first time writing our own brief so we were given 5 words that could steer us in a direction to help our idea generation.

for the timeline, I don't want to create a classic family tree, but instead use the book as the timeline. so, it will go in this order through the book and introduce them through photos.
I want to look at some examples of photo books that have a similar look to what I'm envisioning in my head, which is something less repetitive and structured, but is still controlled to the grids. similar to what I did for my mini fmp in second year.

Facial Expressions + Micro/Macro + EQ
Facial expressions are a powerful means of nonverbal communication, allowing people to convey emotions and intentions without using words.
Tumblr media
Research has shown that facial expressions are universal to some extent, with people across different cultures and languages recognising and interpreting basic emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, and surprise based on facial cues alone.
Gendron, M., Roberson, D., van der Vyver, J.M. and Barrett, L.F. (2014). Perceptions of emotion from facial expressions are not culturally universal: Evidence from a remote culture. Emotion, 14(2), pp.251–262. doi:https://doi.org/10.1037/a0036052.
‌The recognition of emotion through facial expressions can be used to calculate a persons EQ (emotional intelligence). The EQ tests are designed to measure a person's ability to identify and understand different emotions based on visual cues. The ability to accurately recognise and interpret facial expressions is considered an important aspect of emotional intelligence, as it allows people to better understand and respond to the emotions of others.
Segal, J., Smith, M., Robinson, L. and Shubin, J. (2023). Improving Emotional Intelligence (EQ). [online] HelpGuide. Available at: https://www.helpguide.org/articles/mental-health/emotional-intelligence-eq.htm.
‌Some people struggle to recognise facial expressions and may score low on an EQ test. This may be due to a range of factors, including neurological or developmental disorders, social or cultural factors, or simply a lack of exposure or practice.
For example, individuals with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder or prosopagnosia (face blindness) may have difficulty recognising and interpreting facial expressions, as these conditions affect the ability to process and understand social and emotional cues.
Cleveland Clinic. (2022). Face Blindness (Prosopagnosia). [online] Available at: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23412-prosopagnosia-face-blindness.
‌Some people may also lack practice in reading facial expressions, which can make it more difficult for them to accurately interpret the emotions of other people. This in evident in individuals who are socially isolated or who have limited opportunities to interact with others.
Personally I believe there are individuals who have a decreased ability to read peoples emotions from the effects of quarantine, remote learning, and self isolating. I know individuals who spent 2 years off sixth form from the effects of COVID-19, took a gap year, and haven't had the chance to properly practice their social skills, and its evident it has an effect on their social confidence and awareness. Although it may not have an effect on their actual EQ (emotional intelligence), theres definitely a cause for concern that as we progress into a more digital society, the increase of remote working and self isolating will have a big impact on people ability to socialise.
As technology is improving and the progress of virtual reality continues to become more realistic and accessible. It does make me wonder if the potential of a Metaverse is realistic and if people who struggle with low EQ will also struggle reading the emotions of someones avatar inside of a virtual world.
In terms of my mini FMP, I think there is definitely room for discussing about peoples EQ as we progress into a more and more digital world. IQ is suggested to be purely genetic and can only be slightly improved through training, however EQ is proven to be a skill which can be trained and improved through practice. Various interventions, such as social skills training, cognitive-behavioural therapy, or exposure therapy, may be helpful for individuals who struggle with reading facial expressions or understanding emotional cues.
