August 5 - Tainan: Calligraphy class and Ten Drum
As I suspected, I am still feeling the effects of Saturday night - I can never drink that much again/ stay out as late as I did. I do not need a 24+ hour hangover. I also barely slept last night because it was 10 pm by the time I got back from dinner and then I spent 2.5 hours packing for our transition to Tainan this morning and updating my scrapbook. I also just kept waking up in the middle of the night. I was dreaming and at one point, I dreamt that I got shanked and kidnapped - but not like a stab, more like a really hard finger punch in the gut. It broke some ribs and took the wind out of my lungs, like in my dream I was withering in pain which is how I was able to be kidnapped. It was in a parking lot and I wasn't even standing close to the sides - I was right in the middle so that I could see if anyone was coming. I think I was already on edge for some reason, maybe I knew I was a target - I can't remember that part.
Today, we are traveling from Kaohsiung to Tainan. One interesting thing about Taiwan is the naming conventions of the cities. In Chinese nan means west, pei means north, ting means east and so on. To the cities Tainan, Taipei, and Taitung are really just names. asked on location which is pretty cool.
Our first stop today was the National University of Tainan. There, we met the director of the literature department and got a class on calligraphy. Unlike the buddhist museum Saturday, these were real brushes which made it so much harder. We painted on these fans called 團扇 tuanshan (round fan). I chose to write the word for "eternity" 永恆, but I really only chose it because it seemed the easiest to write. I practiced so much and was still disappointed with my fan. It is tough. I also cannot write my name well for the life of me. There are so many details and it always comes out un proportional. My name is hard to say and hard to say, but it's all worth it because it's a nice name. Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun.
Next, we went to the Ten Drum cultural village - it used to be an old sugar refinery. It was sort of like a mini amusement park. We wandered around for a bit then saw a concert with the famous Taiwanese drums. The band that played is called Cross Metal. These guys were so energetic and really brought the stage presence. They were so coordinated and definitely knew what they were doing. They might become a part of my workout playlist. And we even got to take a picture with them at the end. It was pretty cool. I unfortunately did not get their Line LOL, but did tag them in my IG story. They were definitely one of the highlights of the trip.
Reflection
I'm excited to see more of Tainan tomorrow. Tainan is Taiwan's oldest city, first established by the Dutch in 1624 and was the capital of Taiwan for 200 years. This year is Tainan's 400 year anniversary, so there is even more energy here than there would be otherwise. I'm 1885 the capital was moved to Taipei and Tainan is the 6th largest city in Taiwan. Tainan has so much historical significance and you can see how old the buildings are here. As I mentioned in a different blog a while ago, the Dutch brought brick and cement to Taiwan, and there are so many old-looking brick buildings here. At the university, you can see bullets from the US when they were fighting in Taiwan embedded in the bricks in some of the buildings.
Calligraphy has been a very interesting activity. One thing that Dr. Yeh (the calligraphy professor has the same last name as our professor) said about the calligraphy was the way you hold your body. It wasn't just the way you hold your fingers on the brush or the orientation of the brush to the paper, though we talked about that too. He mentioned that you have to relax your body and focus on your breathing and it felt like calligraphy was closer to meditating than writing. It takes a lot of coordination, steady hands, and concentration - it also takes a lot of practice. Calligraphy in Taiwan came from China, and became a writing standard during the Han Dynasty in China (206 B.C.–220 A.D.). Calligraphy traveled from China to Japan in the 6th century, as Japan didn't have a formal writing system at that time. Learning to write must've been a huge privilege back in the day because it is so challenging to paint your letters (pre-pencil) and required good education and patience.

Let's check out a band called p/asma =D
They are a Taiwan-based trio with a J-rock/pop style, I think all the lyrics are in Japanese?
From social media: "In 2021, Kaiaki-Gtr (@kaiakimoh) and Halu-Voc (@halu_sue) created their first song 'Answer'. In May 2023, Capp-Keys (@cappcup.keys) joined, and the band p/asma was established in the southern part of Taiwan (Tainan City)."
The Color Of Water mini album released in Dec. 2023. Delusion is the most aggressive rocker on the album, and all the songs are good.

Any info or an interview link would be helpful. =)

Apr 12th, 2024
today, i watched “18x2: Beyond youthful day”, again and alone, for sure.
i like that, alwaysss, go the movie theater n watch a movie by myself
the 1st time,
i just feel sad overall the movie and actually there is nothing stay in my mind expect an incomplete love as well sad ending. Yu know what, i remember how i got interested and happy and smileeeee when i saw Taiwan on the screen: sound of Chinese, motorbike on the street, peaceful alley, night market, local food store, Bao An station, mini basketball court in the yard and way to much thingsssss about Tainan.
i was thinking about how it gonna be in Taiwan on my next trip but also why the love story in the movie is so similar to yu and me. It was a mixing feeling and what I know is I didnt know actually…
the 2nd,
hhhhh there was tons of work need to be done but suddenly just want to watch the movie again, so here it is, iykyk.
wait, yu know what, the night before, we met, in my dream
yu were there, i was there, i remembered it all too well,
we traveled but not together, we knew but avoid to know, we met directly but treat indirectly, we were familiar but different, we were close but far, …
and things had been through hardly in that but why i also want to be there again, fck i can meet yu
Just a movie but why it is so similar…like us
I thought about Taiwan, about Tainan, about yu
I cried, i did cried, a lot and a lot
I hate that but I love that,
Vietnamese traveled to Taiwan
Taiwanese traveled to Vietnam
Taipei and Saigon
Tainan and Phu Quoc (Kien Giang)
The distance, the story, the feeling….
I got it all too well, too too well
“Traveling is fun because you never know what will happen”,
“Tainan?” - “Người Đài Nam?”,
“I want to see the town where she grew up” ,
… i want to see the town where he grew up
“I've always wanted to ride tandem on a scooter in Taiwan”,
“This feels so good! Just like in the Taiwanese movies!”,
“Sóng-lah?”,
“Jimmy”
…”Charlie”
“When travel, we will meet people who leave a special mark in our hearts, did I leave something in Ami's heart?”
… did i leave something in Charlie’s heart?
“How are you?” - “Có khoẻ không?”
“Those kinds of encounters don't happen often in life” - “Những cuộc gặp gỡ như thế không thường xuất hiện trong đời đâu”
“Boys from the south are mysterious grace” - “Con trai miền Nam dịu dàng một cách kỳ lạ”
“Tainan at last” - “Cuối cùng cũng đến Đài Nam”
hmm thats it
ayy i also saw “Vietnam at Taiwan” on the movie, i like that scene
…so just a little bit, kay?

One thing I love about Taiwan is that when it comes to accommodation, it’s easy to get decent budget hotel rooms or great hostels for the indie backpackers like me who want to enjoy that communal spirit. Now I appreciate good design and I’m past the age of toughing it out in cheapo hostels, so I thought I’d put together a list of my favourite luxury hostels in Taiwan – posher accommodation options that may not be dirt-cheap but are still relatively inexpensive and also feature great design and ambience. My rec list of luxury hostels in Taiwan:
TAIPEI
Star Hostel Taipei Main Station
For those who like the Muji aesthetic and want a hostel with a super convenient location.
Location
Address: 4th Floor, No. 50, Huayin Street, Datong District, Taipei 台北市大同區華陰街50號4樓 [google maps]
Taipei Star Hostel has an excellent location right next to Taipei Main Station, which makes it very convenient for those coming off the Airport MRT, as well as getting to the main bus, train and MRT stations. Q Square Mall and the underground Taipei City Mall are just 5 minutes away, so plenty of food and shopping options.
Rooms
Dormitories: 6-8pax/room at NTD 580-670 (S$25-30) per night
Private rooms: 1-5pax/room at NTD 1,400-3,100 (S$67-136) per night
Breakfast included
Check out Star Hostel Taipei Main Station on booking.com [affiliate link]
I stayed in a Single private for 1,450 NTD (S$67) per night that had an ensuite shower, toilet, air-conditioning and a TV mounted on the wall. I even had my own hairdryer and a free towel. The single room was very minimalist and not very large, but considering I was out most of the day, it was comfortable enough for me to rest in at night.
The dorm rooms beds actually look pretty comfortable and roomy from the pix, and at half the private room rate, they are an option I might consider on future trips back to Taipei.
The toilet + shower was to my right, the sink and door behind me.
  Facilities
The hostel actually occupies the 4th and 5th floors of the building it is in, and it is a lot bigger on the inside then it looks from the outside. You remove your shoes at the main entrance and use a keycard to access the hostel living area, and also to access your individual room.
The overall design is lots of clean white walls and wooden furnishings. The lounge area is the centrepiece of the hostel and is a stunning welcome with high ceilings and natural light. There are lots of cosy nooks to sit around in, and a kitchen as well. They had a craft beer pop up when I was there and I made some new friends over craft beer.
Breakfast in the morning is a rotating menu that is prepared and plated by the hostel staff, with freshly cooked food and fresh fruits, it’s worth waking up for.
Just a small section of the common area – how cute is this place!
Make time for breakfast, which is plated by the kitchen every morning and is always different.
YILAN
Yilan Inspiration Hostel 霊感青年旅舎
For those who like hostels with character and don’t mind that it’s not very centrally located.
Location
No. 29, Luozhuang North Street, Luodong Township, Yilan 265宜蘭縣羅東鎮羅莊北街29號 [Google Maps]
Yilan Inspiration Hostel is a 15-minute walk from the Luodong train and bus station and located in a residential area along a canal, though if you ride a scooter it’s just 5 minutes away. It’s a 20-minute walk to Luodong Night Market, but the owner does have bicycles that you can rent for free to save you the stroll.
View from my window of the 6-bed dorm just above the lounge area. There is a river right in front of the hostel that you can’t quite see from this pic.
Rooms
Dormitories only: 4-10pax/room at NTD 500-600 (S$22-26) per night
Buffet breakfast included
Check out Yilan Inspiration Hostel on booking.com [affiliate link]
The dorm rooms each have their own concept – I picked the 6-bed dorm room with the tents because it looked the cutest, but just know that the mattress you sleep on inside the tent doesn’t have springs – not the most comfortable if you have a bad back.
I got to peek into the 4-bed dorm which has little wooden houses for each bed like mini log cabins. Pix of the 10-bed dorm with sturdy built-in beds stacked up in 3 layers make me think of a cat’s playground.
The bathrooms are shared and located outside of the rooms, with separate toilet and shower cubicles.
Tents in the 6-bed dorm
My tent for the night. You can zip up the doorway for a little privacy and there is a light overhead in each tent
Facilities
Overall the hostel has a quirky and homey feeling. The welcome area has a cheery counter and there is a  nice wooden communal area right in the front room. They have a little retail area selling stuff made by local Taiwanese designers. The rooms are located on the 2nd and 3rd levels up a rather narrow staircase.
Friendly reception and lounge area
From the outside
TAICHUNG
MINI Hotels Taichung Train Station
For those who like a great central location, fun quirky design and don’t mind a very snug space
MINI Hotels isn’t actually a hostel, but its private room prices are on par with some of the luxury hostel private room prices, which is why I included it in this list.
Location
No. 69 Dayong Street, East District, Taichung City 401台中市東區大勇街69號 [Google Maps]
MINI Hotels Taichung Train Station is located 5-min walk from the Taichung Train Station, making it very convenient to get to and around Taichung and Taiwan. Taichung City’s attractions are more spread out, but you are within walking distance of the popular Miyahara Dessert place and the Painted Animation Lane.
View of the surrounding area from the rooftop terrace
Rooms
Private rooms only: 1-6 pax/room at NTD 1,230-4,280 (S$55-188) – price fluctuates depending on season/date
Check out MINI Hotels Taichung Train Station on booking.com  [affiliate link]
I had a single loft room which as advertised, was very snug but it was surprisingly comfortable. A staircase by the entrance leads up to the loft bed which could fit 2 people. There are a slim table and chairs, fridge, luggage rack and TV, as well as your own attached bathroom. It’s honestly quite surprising how much they could fit into a small space.
From the doorway – I’m using a wide angle camera so you can see that space is very tight indeed, but I either sat on the stairs, chairs or lounged in the bed upstairs
A peek into the toilet
Facilities
The hotel design leans towards Instagrammable, with popular props like a fake telephone booth and even a car in the lobby. Each level has its own colourful mural design splashed across the corridor walls.
Breakfast takes place in the dining area just above the lobby area. If you want some fresh air, there is a rooftop area where you can look at downtown Taichung City from above.
Quirky props in the lobby make for good photo ops
Murals decorate the corridors on each level
The dining area
TAINAN
艸祭 Caoji Book Inn
For the book lover and those who love a bit of nostalgia.
Location
No. 71 Nanmen Road, Central West District, Tainan City 台南市中西區南門路71號 [Google Maps]
艸祭 Caoji Book Inn is very close to the Confucius Temple Shopping Street and the Koxinga Museum. It’s about 20 minutes walk or a short bus ride from the Tainan train station. It’s right next door to the famous Narrow Door Cafe.
Me standing in the entrance way of the Narrow Door Cafe. You can see Caoji Book Inn right next door on the right
Rooms
Smaller 2-6pax/room female-only and 4pax/room mixed dormitories at NTD 1,080-2,560 (S$47-112) per night
Larger 10+pax dormitories at 1,080-1,280 NTD (S$48-57)
Check out Caoji Book Inn on booking.com  [affiliate link]
The star feature in this hostel are the beds in the Mixed Dorms, little capsule beds built between and behind existing bookshelves. These beds cover 2 levels and aren’t segregated by separate rooms and doors – you just have a curtain for some privacy and earplugs to block out sound, and a large locker under your bed to put your things in. Each area of the mixed dorm has at least 10 beds in it.
There is a separate wing with its own entrance strictly for female guests that costs a little more – I stayed in that female dormitory which had at least 20 capsule beds in it, also with its own curtain and capsule and lots of books all around. The room wasn’t full that day so it felt pretty spacious and quiet.
They have smaller 2-6pax female only dorms as well for those who prefer more privacy.
The co-ed dorms in the bookshelves. The space where I’m taking this pic from is technically the corridor as you need to walk by the beds to get to the rooftop lounge area
I had to stay in the female dorm because the co-ed dorm was fully booked, but there were a ton of books here as well
My little capsule – lockers were underneath (you can’t see in this pic) and inside the capsule there are sockets, lights and hooks
The toilet is amazing – it reminds me of Japanese bathhouses and besides free shampoo and soap, they have free lotions and other skincare products as well!
Facilities
The hostel is complete hipster heaven filled with random oddities and antiques in every corner. The ground floor and entrance is a quaint bookshop cum cafe with a nice quiet ambience perfect for reading with a cuppa. The back area has a reading room and a basement of sorts which doubles up as a gallery for mini exhibitions.
In the secured living areas, there is a lounge and breakfast space on the top level (Level 4 I think) with lots of table and chairs, and an outdoor patio as well.
There’s a hole in the floor! Walk through the basement to get to the reading area in the back. The stairs lead up to the female dorm.
Bookshelf display in the basement area – there was an art exhibition in the rest of the space
Other Taiwan Accommodation Recs
I’ve stayed in plenty of hostels while exploring Taiwan, and while most of them were good stays, those featured in the list above really stood out for me. While my other stays might not warrant a detailed feature, I’ve compiled a list of budget hotels and cheaper accommodation that I would still recommend to my friends visiting Taiwan. [affiliate links]
Taipei
Datong – Taipei City Home: Located near the Star Hostel, it has a homey feel and a great chatty host, great for those who like a more personal touch
Datong – Mudan House: Close to Dihua Street and the local favourite Yansan Night Market. Not the most central of MRT lines but still near enough the station and easy to get around.
Da’an – First Hostel: Close to Shida Night Market, it’s not the most central but the hostel has a nice Scandinavian aesthetic and it offers FREE LAUNDRY.
Read more about exploring Taipei here.
Kaohsiung
Hengchun – Rainbow Wave: I made a lot of friends in this hostel which offers surfing lessons. The owner and his partner were really friendly and lovely people, and the breakfast is hand-prepped every morning at the counter and of excellent quality.
Read more about things to do in Kaohsiung here.
Offshore Islands
Lyudao / Green Island – Sanasai Inn: The location is great because it’s really close to the port. I like that you can rent e-scooters directly from them as well. Read more about exploring Lyudao here
Kinmen – Beishan Old Western Style Hostel: It’s not the most centrally located in the northern Beimen district and there’s no food or shops around it, but it is located in a historical building and despite its traditional exterior, has really well designed and comfortable facilities and a friendly owner. Read more about exploring Kinmen here

DECEMBER 2019 DIMENSIONS ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULES & REVIEW
Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of January 7 KST:
A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.
Threads do not have to take place directly during an important date listed on the schedule, but must be related to what the muse is mentioned to be doing in the paragraph explaining their schedule/the company’s schedule for the month and/or their thoughts on the mentioned activities or lack thereof.
These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.
Reminder: November schedule posts are due by the end of December 7 KST.
Overall Company
Renovations continue on the new building the company will be moving into in 2020 and everything is ahead of schedule so far. Lucid’s impressive comeback this month reassures the higher ups that there’s only room for the company to grow and the involvement of Unity in a cross-company unit with BC Entertainment is proof they’re being taken seriously as one of the top three companies..
Important dates:
N/A
Dimensions Soloist 1
For most of the month, she’s granted a vacation as a reward for all of her hard work touring and promoting this year, but Dimensions has scheduled her to help volunteer at a local soup kitchen for the elderly on Christmas day with some of her label mates. It’ll look good in the press and help boost her image positively, even if it doesn’t give the thrill of performing
Important dates:
December 25: Volunteering at local soup kitchen for the elderly (also volunteering: Dimensions Soloist 2, Gal.actic, and MARS).
Dimensions Soloist 2
Before he begins preparations for another comeback in the new year, Dimensions has scheduled him for some positive media play by signing him up to volunteer at a local soup kitchen for the elderly alongside the other company soloist as well as Gal.actic and MARS to feed his caring and thoughtful image.
Important dates:
December 16: Filming of Idol Star Athletics Championships in Seoul, South Korea (also attending: Knight, Lipstick, CHARM, Alien, 7ROPHY, Lucid, and Aria.)
December 25: Volunteering at local soup kitchen for the elderly (also volunteering: Dimensions Soloist 1, Gal.actic, and MARS).
Gal.actic
While some of their company mates have comebacks or attend year-end festivals, Gal.actic continues to prepare for their own comeback by learning and endlessly rehearsing the choreography for their title track, “B.B.B”. Clean choreography is especially important for this comeback as Dimensions plans to send them out for more concert and fan meetings opportunities in 2020. Near the end of the month, they’ll have stage outfit fittings to prepare for teaser and MV shooting next month. The members will be granted New Year’s Eve off from practice this year, but on Christmas day, they’ll be volunteering alongside MARS and the company soloists at a local soup kitchen for the elderly. The crowd they’re serving are likely unfamiliar with their work (which may be for the better), but it’s all for appearance’s sake anyway.
Important dates:
December 25: Volunteering at local soup kitchen for the elderly (also volunteering: Dimensions Soloist 1, Dimensions Soloist 2, and MARS).
December 27: Stage outfit fittings.
Alien
Alien has a break from their tour this month to focus on activities closer to home like award shows and year-end festivals, but they also have a brief stint in the US to perform as a part of iHeart Radio’s Jingle Ball lineup. On the 12th in New York, in between Jingle Ball performances, they’ll have a meeting with their US management to discuss plans for 2020 onward, which will include more all English singles and plans for an all English album.
Important dates:
December 4: Mnet Asian Music Awards at Nagoya Dome in Nagoya, Japan (also attending: BC Soloist 1, BEE, CHARM, WISH, 7ROPHY, Gold Star Soloist 2, Origin, and Impulse).
December 9: Performance at Jingle Ball at Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis, MN, USA.
December 10: Performance at Chanel N°5 in the Snow in New York, NY, USA.
December 11: Performance at Jingle Ball at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA, USA.
December 12: Appearance on Live! With Kelly & Ryan in New York, NY, USA.
December 13: Performance at Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY, USA.
December 16: Filming of Idol Star Athletics Championships in Seoul, South Korea (also attending: Knight, Lipstick, CHARM, Dimensions Soloist 2, 7ROPHY, Lucid, and Aria).
December 21: Performance at MDL Beast Festival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
December 25: Performance at Gayo Daejeon at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, BEE, Lipstick, CHARM, WISH, Unity, Lucid, Aria, Origin, Impulse, and Fuse).
December 27: Performance at Gayo Daechukje at KINTEX in Ilsan, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, BEE, WISH, CHARM, Unity, Lucid, Aria, Origin, Impulse, and Fuse).
December 31: Performance at Gayo Daejejeon at MBC Dream Center in Ilsan, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, Lipstick, CHARM, Unity, 7ROPHY, Lucid, Impulse, and Fuse).
MARS
The MARS members continue preparation for their January concert and continue to be filmed all throughout preparations. The focus will be on performance rehearsals this month (see November’s schedule for special stages) and getting fittings out of the way. Dimensions will also be using them to get some positive media play this month too by having them volunteer to help out at a soup kitchen for the elderly on Christmas day with their labelmates Gal.actic and the company soloists, and hosting a fan sign with canned food donations as the lottery entry for access.
Important dates:
December 7: Initial concert outfit fittings.
December 9: Holiday charity fan sign in Songpa, Seoul.
December 25: Volunteering at local soup kitchen for the elderly (also volunteering: Dimensions Soloist 1, Dimensions Soloist 2, and Gal.actic).
December 27: Second concert outfit fittings.
7ROPHY
Their comeback is next month, so December is filled with hours is the dance studio and time at the salon. Stage outfits, teaser photos, and the music video for the single are all taken care of this month for a seamless transition into promotions in January without anything getting in the way. Dimensions is already looking to the future and promising a second comeback in the first half of the year with a mini-album, though it’s not clear whether that says something positive or negative about their expectations for the upcoming digital single.
Important dates:
December 10: Comeback stage outfit fittings.
December 11: Performance at DongA Sports Awards in Seoul, South Korea (also performing: Lucid).
December 16: Filming of Idol Star Athletics Championships in Seoul, South Korea (also attending: Knight, Lipstick, CHARM, Dimensions Soloist 2, Alien, Lucid, and Aria)
December 21: Performance at Christmas New Year’s Eve Concert in Tainan, Taiwan.
December 26: Teaser photo shoot.
December 27: “Me” MV filming.
December 31: Performance at Gayo Daejejeon at MBC Dream Center in Ilsan, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, Lipstick, CHARM, Alien, Unity, Lucid, Impulse, and Fuse).
Unity
While Dimensions begins to prepare the three members chosen for CHAMPION, Unity’s schedule is actually relatively calm for once. They have two schedules in the US to attend, but then they return to Seoul and the news that Dimensions plans to open a network of YouTube channels for Unity in the new year to help promote them. This is an expansion of Dimensions’ interest in YouTube as a promotional tool as they’ve been testing with MARS. To kick off the channel, they’re going to have the members film a series of selfcams in a 24 hour relay assigned as follows (three hours for each member, with CHAMPION unit members getting an additional hour):
12PM to 1PM: Lead rapper/vocal
1PM to 3PM: Main dancer/rapper/vocal
3PM to 4PM: Leader/main rapper/lead dancer/vocal
4PM to 5PM: Main vocal 1
5PM to 6PM: Main vocal 2
6PM to 7PM: Lead rapper/vocal
7PM to 9PM: Main vocal 1
9PM to 10PM: Maknae/lead vocal/lead dancer
10PM to 11PM: Lead rapper/vocal
11PM to 12AM: Lead vocal
12AM to 1AM: Lead rapper/vocal
1AM to 2AM: Lead vocal
2AM to 4AM: Maknae/lead vocal/lead dancer
4AM to 6AM: Main vocal 2
6AM to 9AM: Leader/main rapper/lead dancer/vocal
9AM to 10AM: Main dancer/rapper/vocal
10AM to 11AM: Lead vocal
11AM to 12PM: Main dancer/rapper/ vocal
Important dates:
December 5: Performance at Poptopia at SAP Center in San Jose, CA, USA.
December 7: Performance at B9 Pepsi Jingle Bash at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL, USA.
December 8-9: 24 Hour Self-Cam Relay filming.
December 25: Performance at Gayo Daejeon at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, BEE, Lipstick, CHARM, WISH, Alien, Lucid, Aria, Origin, Impulse, and Fuse).
December 27: Performance at Gayo Daechukje at KINTEX in Ilsan, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, BEE, CHARM, WISH, Alien, Lucid, Aria, Origin, Impulse, and Fuse).
December 31: Performance at Gayo Daejejeon at MBC Dream Center in Ilsan, South Korea (also performing: Decipher, Lipstick, CHARM, Alien, 7ROPHY, Lucid, Impulse, and Fuse).
               ↳ CHAMPION
On the 8th of the month (in the morning, before the self-cam relay starts), Unity’s leader/main rapper/vocal, main dancer/rapper/vocal, and lead rapper/vocal are brought in to a meeting at the BC Entertainment building. They’re not told why, but when they arrive at the meeting room, they’re joined by Decipher’s maknae/main dancer/lead vocal and Knight’s main vocal 2 and main dancer/vocal/rapper. Representatives from management announce to them that they’ve been chosen as members of a BC and Dimensions joint sub-unit effort in collaboration with an American music label. The group will be called CHAMPION and will be marketed as “the Avengers of K-Pop” with a goal of capturing the hearts of the American market and will be a major focus for both companies in 2020. Debut album preparations will not begin until the new year, but this month, the members will begin to be pushed into English lessons in addition to public speaking and US-specific media training both individually and all together. The members have been hand-picked for their performance ability and perceived potential execution of the supergroup concept by top executives of their respective companies. BC Entertainment will work alongside the American label in marketing and management for the sub-group while Dimensions will mostly focus on the group’s music and concepts. This is a major and planned-to-be permanent project between the two companies, with a higher budget for their debut than is planned for any of their respective original groups’ next comebacks and plans for a tour are already underway before they’ve even been announced to the public. This information is all dropped on the chosen members during the meeting. Before leaving, the members are told that the news is meant to be kept strictly secret from the public with no spoilers or hints yet, as a careful promotional campaign is planned for its unveiling.
Important dates:
December 8: Announcement meeting.

Their comeback this month is a runaway success, earning them their first number one single and their first (of many this promotion period) music show win. By all metrics, it’s the most successful song to come from a Dimensions group this year and also one of the most successful songs released from any girl group in 2019. Their perceived rookie spirit is what led to such interest in them in the first place, though, so Dimensions is careful not to praise them too much for their success. Their radio show promotions seem endless on top of music show promotions, which include a special Christmas stage covering “Feliz Navidad” on Music Bank as one of the groups promoting during the Christmas season. The three dancers of the group and the lead vocal will also do a special stage cover of Silhouette’s “Bad Girl Good Girl” at this year’s Gayo Daejeon alongside their first performances ever at all three Gayos.
Important dates:
December 2: Release of “Rough” & Snowflake showcase, promotions continue until January 2.

Text description provided by the architects. The Place, like its name, brands itself as a hotel that creates a unique visitor experienced that embodies the specific identity of each place. This specificity of place is central to Mecanoo’s “People, Place, Purpose” design philosophy, which emphasizes users, a holistic understanding of the social, historical and physical context, and a response to current and future building functions. For each assignment, our goal is to seek out the secret of the location to create a unique design that strengthens the distinct identity of the context.
In keeping with this design philosophy, Mecanoo’s interiors for The Place hotels in other cities all embody a unique sense of place: The Place in Tainan reinterprets the historic city’s rich streetscape; in Yilan, the hotel is located in the National Center for Traditional Arts and draws its inspiration from local craftsmanship. By contrasting old and new, mixing of west and east, the hotel becomes a contemporary interpretation of a traditional art form.
For the interior design of the The Place hotel in Taipei’s Nangang district, Mecanoo drew inspiration from the local tea production tradition. The tea industry has contributed to shaping the area’s landscape and history, and is part of what makes Nangang unique. More recently, since shifting from a manufacturing economy to the knowledge-based economy in the late 20thC, Nangang has developed as a sustainable regional centre for conferences and trade shows. The district includes a software park and a High Speed Rail connection to the airport. Mecanoo’s design for the hotel interior combines old and new, tying together these two aspects of Nangang’s distinct identity.
The Nangang district: Pouchong tea. Historically, one of the Nangang district’s most important export products has been Pouchong tea. It is harvested from terraced tea plantations, which have become a popular touristic destination with the Nangang Tea Processing Demonstration Centre. It is a type of Oolong tea with a bright yellow colour. The tea was dried, fermented, packaged and transported and distributed worldwide.
Hotel public area: tea house (socialising). The local Pouchong tea became the springboard for Mecanoo’s design of The Place in Nangan. The hotel is located on the 10thto 20thfloors of a mixed-use building. Visitors pass through a ground-floor lobby and arrive at the 10thfloor check-in / lounge / dining area, which functions like a Taiwanese tea house. Traditionally, these tea houses are social spaces, not unlike European cafes and bars. Likewise, The Place’s welcoming lobby allows guests to check in, work, rest, dine and socialise. These services are “highlighted” in a contemporary bright blue linear element, creating a strong contrast with the warm oak walls. This element contains a buffet counter, flexible stepped seating, and several one-step self-check-in points. As in a tea house, hospitality and socialisation are central.
Social spaces should have an energetic buzz without becoming overcrowded; depending on the time of day, the size of the lobby can be flexibly adjusted with a system of curtains. Only half of the space is open in the late evenings; when the hotel is fully booked, the lobby can extend to the adjacent multipurpose room. Curtains also add a rich experiential layer to the project; in the 10thfloor dining area, overlapping layers of fabric with different degrees of transparency selectively reveal views. In the conference room, a historic photograph of boats transporting tea is reinterpreted for the region’s technology-focussed development. The ca. 60m x 4m printed image is a “digitalised history” – what appears as a historic image from a distance becomes a pattern of 1s and 0s when seen up close.
Hotels rooms: tea fields (production). While the lobby is a tea house, the hotel corridors and rooms embody the tea production process. The corridor carpet pattern evokes the terraced tea plantation landscape. Stepping into the rooms, the chevron wood floor pattern echoes the woven bamboo baskets for drying tea leaves. The colour palette is natural wood with Pouchong tea-coloured accents.
The compact hotels rooms vary between 20 m2and 43 m2. They are flexible and efficient. The Place is primarily a business hotel, with guests coming for trade fairs and shows. Storage space and computer working stations are therefore conveniently provided. There are seven types of rooms, each with a compact layout and designed to appear as spacious as possible. To this end, fixed elements are integrated into one box: the bathroom, wardrobe, a place for luggage, a mini bar and a standing workplace. Others are mobile elements: rotating round table, work from bed or chair. Above the standing workplace is a pegboard that provides an assortment of “working tools” for the guests’ stay: chargers, stationary, speakers, tea, cups, even airplants.

Hawker Centers
I know I have a few Asian followers (as in located in Asia) so you guys would know about hawker centers. But the TL;DR, Hawker centers is a special type of food court. It’s different than a food court and street food and restaurant.
First off, to my American educated mind, we have no clue what hawker center means. Hawker to an American mind might bring up the word, hawk - the bird. So Bird Center? Huh? Then my mind was like, okay, maybe it’s not the first meaning. What else does Hawker mean? Hawker sounds like stalker. Stalker Center? Humm, maybe. In the US we will more likely use the word peddler instead of using hawker as a person who sells thing on a street.
So the idea of a hawker center is really foreign - at least to me before I’ve been to Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. But even going to Hong Kong, it was still pretty easy to avoid hawker centers, so I didn’t really experience a hawker center till I visited to places more south. But the idea of a hawker center is pretty interesting. It’s a place with multiple food vendors that all behaves like mini restaurants. Hawker centers are not the same as a food court at an airport or mall where you order your food at say Panda Express, pay at Panda Express, and then eat at one of the public tables the mall/airport has setup.
Instead at a hawker center, most of the food vendors there are not competing - meaning you won’t find 2+ fried chicken vendors or 2+ juice vendors. They usually specialize in just 1 kind of food or 1 type of cuisine. Hawker centers aren’t usually fancy, so you’re going to see the cheapest tables, cheapest chairs, and a place that is probably just clean enough to meet the minimal requirements of clean. But on these plastic tables, there’s usually a number. So to actually order food, you would go to one or a few of these stands and say what you want and tell them your table number (you better have a friend saving your space if it’s busy). You then go back to your table to wait for the food to be brought to you. Then each of the vendors will brings you the food/drink and you pay each vendor at your table with cash. After you’re done eating, you just leave your food on the table and someone from the hawker center will clean it up for you. This is so strange to my mind as I’ve never seen this till I went to Asia.
In the US food courts, you don’t get table service, you normally need to throw your own food waste away, you pay for your food before you get your food, and most people just go to one vendor and orders their food and drinks from one place. It’s also not uncommon to see multiple competing vendors at a food court. It’s interesting.
But I find hawker centers quite charming. Here’s a few pictures of hawker centers from my travels.
Here’s one from Hong Kong at the Sheung Wan Market. I remember it being unpleasant smelling.
Tumblr media
Here’s one at Tainan, Taiwan that doesn’t have an English name. I remember the food here being really good and clean.
Tumblr media
Here’s one at Petaling, Malaysia. I remember I got Thai food here because I didn’t want to eat Malaysian food at that night.
Tumblr media
A more famous one at Jalan Alor in Kuala Lumpur - though this is called a night market. But at the same time even though it’s a night market, some parts of just operates like a restaurant on the streets, and some parts operates like a hawker center.
Tumblr media
And hey, a picture of me at a Singapore hawker centre (notice the spelling of centre vs center). But in Singapore, instead of calling it hawker centre, it’s called food centre. But hawker centers in Singapore usually operates a little differently than what I said earlier. You’re more likely to bring your own food to your own table instead.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, napkins are not included in Asia. Napkins costs extra.

I love coffee cakes, especially when topped with lemon icing and fresh fruits! 🙋🏻‍♀️💕 Gia Wang @gia_thelilstudio
A summer berry tart I made for a styling demo a while back. It's getting too hot in Taiwan to actually dine outdoors, tbh we can't really survive without air conditioning at this point, but would love to do so soon. 😅☀️🍓
London
Staying at my grandparents' place in Tainan this week! Foraged a bunch of green mangos to make sweet pickled mangos~😍 It's such a typical Taiwanese summer treat. They are in the freezer now, so I can make pickled mango ice tomorrow! Can't wait!
Really miss Copenhagen and everything there~😍🍒💕
Strawberry tart, anyone? Hope everyone has a great weekend!🍓
Late breakfast turned early lunch~😍
A mini bundt cake with berries and vanilla icing~ Happy Tuesday!
Getting over jet lag is the worst. So for the past week, all I've been doing is watch a lot of John Oliver and try to form one cohesive thought during daytime. Now I feel awake and pumped and ready to head back into the kitchen!
