i need to speak my truth rn. does anyone else think that none of the characters in sweet pool are actually gay, and that part of the horror of the game is that they have been changed into something unrecognizable to their original selves?

like yeah you could read all or some of them as genuinely attracted to men, but. you also could... not. read it that way. and the game makes sense still if none of them are actually attracted to men. which is CRAZY for a yaoi game

youji is uninterested in anyone at all until after he's been sexually assaulted and had his body renovated by the inner beings. he even says he's not really attracted to men, just to tetsuo. the idea of tetsuo as an exception is like, after being manipulated and gaslit into an attachment to him and huffing the alpha pheromones or whatever... he's attracted to him because the inner beings NEED him to be.

tetsuo has "girls on rotation" and only became interested in youji because of the inner beings & pheromones & trauma as well.

makoto didnt feel that he was attracted to any men until youjis omega pheromones drove him crazy (and again, isnt attracted to men in general, just youji's pheromones)

zenya is on some other level of delusion and self-hatred with his "defect" where he wants to possess and impregnate youji to prove himself as a Male or something.

i finished this game wholly unconvinced that ANY of them are genuinely attracted to men 😭 is it just me? or did anyone else come away from the game feeling similarly?

hello first off SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG FOR ME TO ANSWER but no i don't mind giving my opinions on the side characters

Arata and Kotaro are actually two of my favorite side characters! I didn't like them that much at first to be honest but they've definitely grown on me a lot recently.

I think Kotaro is really overlooked actually. Like I still see people bring up his actions in the main story when he’s moved on a lot past that, and then just write him off because of it. And I mean, it’s probably because he never got too much screentime between then and Power of Unity, but since he’s been making more regular appearances I think they’ve taken his character in a really interesting direction. He initially became a singer because he wanted to be a cool older brother for his baby brother and just happened to see RW at that time, which pushed him into street music. He just did it as a passtime because he was sort of good at it. However, RW did have a big impact on him, just like it had on An and Akito, even if he was only sorta casual in the street music scene. He admits in POU that the reason he never went further was because he was afraid, and seeing VBS putting their all into it inspired him.

It’s sort of subtle up until Light Up the Fire, but Kotaro doesn't have a lot of self-esteem or confidence in his singing. I think the first time it's ever brought up is in Power of Unity as far as I remember, where he asks once or twice if he's holding everyone back. LUTF makes it really clear that he has a lot of insecurities: he believes he's holding everyone back and he believes that he has no talent compared to the others. And that's what sticks out to me, because 3/4 of VBS have felt the same way. Kohane, Akito, and Toya all at some point or another believed they were holding everyone back, be it because they were a rookie, lacking talent, or had no resolve. Kotaro has been all of those and it’s obvious that he is written the way he is to serve as a mirror character to those three. He's had the same insecurities but the way he goes about dealing with them is totally different. While VBS had each other to rely on, Kotaro doesn't have a singing partner or group. He's a solo artist. And while he works with VBS, Arata, and EVER, he isn't part of any of their groups. Even Arata who also works alone still has Souma, but more on that in a minute.

(Also just an aside, I think he’s a mirror to Kohane slightly more than the others, and that slightly being the fact that VBS is what got him inspired to take this seriously, because that’s how Kohane got inspired she saw the others and wanted to be just like them, she wanted something to throw herself into and give her all to. The fact that she’s the main one who tries to call out to him when he breaks down in LUTF I think also plays into this, like it seems to hint that she’s able to relate to him.)

I really think Kotaro is much more than how he was presented in the main story and could definitely become a pretty strong side character if he ever got an event with a bit more focus (like how Vivid Old Tale gave Nagi a lot of screentime or POU had a lot of focus on Arata). Also clpl have you ever considered giving Kotaro a partner please give him a partner. Considering you rubbed in how important singing partners are before now why haven't you even tried to give him one?

Arata has definitely been given more development than Kotaro and I genuinely think he has one of the best arcs of any side character. Like he starts out as a rival for Akito, a foil to Akito. He's basically everything Akito wants to be, and also kind of a dick. Him getting beat by Taiga though, even though it was a small moment, was definitely an important turning point for him because it put him on the same level as everyone else. Because even he has someone better than him.

Oh and his development in POU was so good I'm probably gonna go on a little tangent about his relationship with Souma now because it's so important to his character. Arata's doing all of this for Souma. Souma was the one who wanted to do street music, Souma was the one who took Arata to RW, everything was Souma's dream, but it was still important to Arata. They were partners after all. But that's what it is. Were. Even if Arata wasn't the one who was in that car accident, it still took a toll on him. Souma has been forced into a position where he isn't going to be able to achieve his dreams, so Arata has to carry all that weight on his back. Surpassing RW suddenly has become so much more important to Arata because he wants, needs, Souma's dream to become a reality. The thing is, with how caught up he was in doing everything for Souma, he approached everything on his own. Surpassing RW isn't something he can do alone; the original was a collaboration between several groups, there's no way Arata could do it alone. He needed to work with people again, which he finally realised in POU.

Actually I think one of my favorite moments in his arc has to be his showdown with Taiga in LUTF. Because he's been able to overcome what was holding him back, he's actually able to get closer to Taiga's level. That is, until Taiga drops the "we're not so different" bomb. Because that moment is so powerful. Because at that point we see Arata as less of a foil to Akito and more of a parallel to Taiga. Both of them went through a similar loss of a partner, and Taiga uses that to get under Arata's skin and he goes for a deep cut. Souma is incredibly important to Arata, and Taiga knows that and had a similar experience of losing someone important to him, and is able to see exactly what’s still holding Arata back from reaching his full potential. Arata is doing all of this for Souma. For Souma. Taiga points out that Arata isn’t carrying Souma’s dream, he’s clinging onto the idea to cope with his grief. The thing is, Souma can’t surpass RW anymore. Arata’s loaded that responsibility onto himself, without even considering his own feelings on the matter. As Taiga says, Arata is good, great even, but he can’t be the best unless he asks himself if he wants this. Arata can’t even say that he is carrying Souma’s dream, that he does want to do this and he isn’t just clinging onto the idea to cope, and it crushes him to the point of leaving Shibuya.

Honestly I think leaving was what was best for Arata in that moment. Because he does need to take a step back and just let himself actually process his grief. Because even if Souma is still alive, that partnership was still lost and Arata had dedicated everything to that partnership and to Souma, and really he still does. And honestly I think this is what he wants even if you take Souma’s dreams out of the equation, but he needs time to himself to think about what he wants. I don’t know when we’ll next see him again honestly it might be a while but I’m interested to see how that goes. Arata is surprisingly developed and nuanced for a side character and the fact the devs managed to do this across 3 events, two of which he only appears in for a couple chapters is insane. Oh yeah also I like him a bit more than Kotaro if the wall of text wasn’t obvious.

So this is nothing else but a collection of informations, series by series, episode by episode about how the Todorokis appear in it, especially compared to the manga.

Ep. 11 Game Over (ゲームオーバー GAME OVER)

This time we have Shouto being inolved in a bit of action which the anime goes so far as expanding.

We start more or less like in the manga wish Shouto's breath being visible due to how he used his ice and his enemies being frozen as Shouto talks to them.

The dialogue remains the same

Itcha warui ga, anta-ra dō mite mo “‘kosei’ o mote amashita yakara” ijō ni wa miuke rarenee yo.' 轟焦凍「散らして殺す…か？言っちゃ悪いが、あんたらどう見ても『〝個性〟を持て余した輩』以上には見受けられねぇよ。」 Todoroki Shōto “Scatter and kill them...huh? But then, while in the manga Shouto just thinks at what is going on while walking, the anime adds two Villains trying to jump on Shouto, only for Shouto to freeze them without hesitation.

Shouto's thoughts get expanded a bit as well.

In the manga all he thinks is:

At first glance, I thought they would gather their elite troops and overwhelm us with numbers. But when I looked, they were just a bunch of thugs... From what I saw, there were only about 4-5 people who looked really dangerous... So...)

...but the anime adds at the end of this sentence what instead Shouto will think later.

And then we've maybe the creepiest change, something that makes Shouto really scary in the anime. In the manga Shouto sits down and just threaten the Villains to let them get frostbites. In the anime he remains standing and, although he says the same thing, he moves his hand near to one of the Villains' face, threatening to enchase him completely in ice. It would mean he wouldn't be able to breathe making the threat more dangerous as here he's basically threatening to kill him. As we don't know Shouto yet and here it's alone this makes him look even more scary because we can't clearly tell if it's a bluff, while in the manga it felt more like one.

Again, the sentence he says it's the same as the manga...

Todoroki Shōto ‘Nā, kono mamajya anta-ra jiwajiwato karada ga eshishiteku wakenanda ga, ore mo HERO shibō, sonna hidoe koto wa narubeku saketai. Ano ALL MIGHT o yareruttsuu konkyo… sakutte nanda?’ 轟焦凍「なあ、このままじゃあんたらじわじわと身体が壊死してくわけなんだが、俺もヒーロー志望、そんな酷え事はなるべく避けたい。あのオールマイトを殺れるっつう根拠…策って何だ？」 Todoroki Shōto “Hey, if you carry on like this your body will slowly die, but I want to be a hero too, so I want to avoid that terrible thing as much as possible. So you're saying you can kill All Might... what's your plan?”

... however in the manga the whole 'what should I do next' was added after Shouto thinks he's trying to avoid doing terrible things like murdering as much as possible, so it makes even more clear he planned to do something different. By placing it earlier instead it seems what Shouto has to do next is threaten to kill the Villains to get them to talk.

It's minor but this bit still make Shouto scarier.

We've another very minor scene which the anime kept and it's the one of Shouto running.

Event Summary (Mine) : Story started around same time as Akito and Touya centric story here and here. An's job is to spread VBS recognition to Vivid street people. Different than Akito, this job only An can do since An had more connection with Nagi and Vivid street peoples.

Eventhough An's job looks harder since there's problem with Nagi past, in the end the real problem goes to her anxious feelings on Kohane fast growth. An anxious feelings already mentioned twice from here and here so this event story bound to happen someday.

As her problem really similar to newbie with street music Touya when he and Akito still in BAD DOGS, Touya offer some encouragement to talk to Kohane. As she keep thinking the solution, she talked all her feelings and asked Kohane to fight her in singing competition as her resolution to beat her.

In the end, crowd even a EVER member involved in their atmosphere and An won the match. Later, EVER too join forces again with VBS to surpass RAD WEEKEND

Card Time and Place :

This scene happens around the time An talked her anxious feelings to Akito Touya Miku and Luka. As An need solution, Luka just said to talk all of her feelings to Kohane but rejected by An.

This scene happens after Touya remembered about scene from Luka card above, so he asked An to meet up and talk. He remember her expression after rejected Luka proposal similar to Touya face when he asked to quit BAD DOGS (Touya Akito 3* initial card scene from VBS main story). So he thought maybe An feels similar like him, scare of getting rejected by their partner.

These scene happens from their singing competition. Their pride collide each others and drag everyone there. An want to break her own limit and beat Kohane in their fullest while Kohane knows it and answer her resolution.

Rarity : Those five member feature here contribute the stories most so it had a right lineup and rarity.

I kinda like An after change arts, too bad this event happens when I hiatus (lol) but I can get the card when it include in tickets.

Personal Opinion: One of my favorite stories ever. It’s a bittersweet journey as we follow Taichi Ichinose, Toma Mita, and Futaba Kuze navigate their last year of high school together. Along the way, they struggle against gender norms and the curse of falling for someone you can never have. I love these characters with my whole heart. They actually inspired one of my novel ideas, the only one I ever finished so this manga has a special place in my heart.

Likes:

- That ending! Holy fucking shit! Taichi is presented as the main protagonist in this series so when we reach the epilogue, we naturally assume that we’re in Taichi’s POV. We’re led to believe that since one of the first things that character does is write the name “Ichinose” at Futaba’s wedding. But then post-wedding, we see Taichi! By process of elimination, the only possible character that could be the POV is Toma! Meaning Taichi and Toma got married! And we know they are married because they live together, they hold hands in the epilogue, and they’re both wearing rings. I squealed. It was such a twist but it also didn’t come out of left field. Toward the end of the series, there were hints that Taichi had reciprocated Toma’s feelings, he just never knew loving men could be an option for him until Toma confessed! Ugh, that epilogue was just so good.

- Anyway, let’s talk about some of the other stuff. I adore the art style. It’s cute and wholesome and each of the characters have their own flavor. Toma exudes big dog energy. Taichi is indeed a tiny gremlin with a good heart. And Futaba is a hamster through and through. The way their drawn matches their personalities so well. And specifically, I love the way the artist drew Toma’s smile. It’s just so radiant and beautiful, I had a crush on him by the end of the series.

- Mami speaks to me on a spiritual level. Why can’t men and women be just friends? Why can’t a girl just hang out with the bros? Why can’t guys wear makeup and why can’t girls play video games? Why should she be cut out from friend groups just because she interacts with a guy? It’s ridiculous and the unfortunate part is, I’ve seen girls treated the way Mami has and it disgusts me. So to see her find a friend in Taichi and Toma and Futaba after everything she went through in middle school, I just wanted her to be happy. And honestly, she had such a badass moment when she said, “Screw everyone else, I’m doing what I want when I want.”

- Mad respect for Shingo for always being there for Mami even when his girlfriends would tell him they were jealous of her. Like fuck you, he was friends with Mami first, why should he stop hanging out with her just because you’re insecure? He also only fought Toma to protect Mami and I love that. But he has no ulterior motives, no romantic interest in Mami, he sees her as a woman but more importantly, as his best friend.

- The deep conversations where Masumi would allude to her sexuality were always so gripping. Like, I really felt for her whenever she was lamenting being in love with a girl and being unable to find happiness with a guy. But Mami was also right that Masumi needed to meet people halfway. Seeing them cry together really tugged at my heartstrings.

- The board game that Taichi and Toma came up with together is such a cute ass detail. Landing on a space where everyone gets friendship power? Ingenious. But the part that really got me was Toma putting their character pieces inside of the charm he gave Taichi, that got me so emotional. “Friendship Power” fuck you, I’m in tears.

- One of my favorite moments was the festival. Toma in a yukata and the girls in kimonos was so great, they looked amazing! But also, that was when Toma gave Taichi his birthday present and I just about bawled my eyes out over it.

Dislikes:

- Kensuke. The source of all the homophobia and vulgar sexism in this series. I hate him. I do understand where some of his homophobia comes from considering his past but the girls were right when they said that has nothing to do with Toma. Anyway, Kensuke isn’t even who I have a big problem with. No, it’s actually Shingo. Yo, he said to the girls that they were just like Kensuke for not tolerating his intolerance. BITCH! And the story framed it like he was right. Ugh, that’s fucked up.

- I wanted more of Taichi and Toma. I want to know how they got together. What happened in between the main story and the epilogue, please tell me KAITO! I need to know how they found each other and fell in love!
