I LOVE the version of Lucius in your fic Prison of the Phoenix. He's different from a lot of portrayals I've seen. Why did you decide to write him how you did?

A lot of the fun of writing a book-accurate fix-it fic comes from taking the events of the book, and removing JKRs (simplistic, misleading, sometimes just weird) narrative framing. Slytherins = baddies, Gryffindors = goodies, you know. 

This is especially fun with Lucius Malfoy, who just like… isn’t very evil? Chamber of Secrets is his most villainous book, and I’ll get to that, but otherwise? He tries (unsuccessfully) to get the animal that attacked his kid killed. He donates to hospitals (but in like, an evil way.) He is a hilariously incompetent Death Eater, and then he's Voldemort’s punching bag. 

That’s kind of the point of Lucius. He looks the part. He commits to the aesthetics of the thing, with the hair and the peacocks and the snake-wand-cane. He likes the mystique of walking into a room and knowing that you know (but can’t prove) he’s a dark wizard. It allows him to be… kinda lazy. He can coast on his family name, money, reputation, privilege. I really think that if you sat Lucius Malfoy down and asked him to walk you through all the wizard-supremacy talking points he wouldn’t be able to do it. He’ll toss around words like “mudblood” and “mudblood-lover” no problem, but in the end he doesn’t really care. Lucius is not a true believer. The way the world is set up benefits him tremendously and he doesn’t want Voldemort back. That’s just text:

“Use your brains, Ron,” said Bill. “If they really were Death Eaters… I bet they’d be even more frightened than the rest of us to see him come back. They denied they’d ever been involved with him when he lost his powers, and went back to their daily lives… I don’t reckon he’d be over-pleased with them, do you?”

Lucius and friends had too much to drink at a sporting event, put on the old outfits (again with the aesthetics) and started levitating muggles. Which obviously isn’t GOOD, but they’re not killing or torturing, or furthering any kind of agenda. It’s important that Barty is so insulted and pissed off by the way they’re basically playing Dark Wizard that he casts the Dark Mark to “show [them] what loyalty to the Dark Lord meant, and to punish them for their lack of it.” Which kicks off most of the events of the book. 

Prison of the Phoenix is going to have a companion, parallel fic told from Harry’s POV (tentatively titled Harry Potter and Malfoy’s Suspicious Interest in Werewolves.) Lucius does show up in that one, and I was honestly surprised by how much more frightening and intimidating he is when filtered through Harry’s perspective. Because with a Severus POV… when Severus is used to spending time around Voldemort, Greyback, Bellatrix, honestly Dumbledore and Sirius Black…. Lucius is not scary. Lucius wants to buy presents for his son, go to high-profile events with his beautiful wife, and wear a variety of snake-themed accessories and extravagant hats. 

I wanted a kind of college-roommates-who-stayed-friends feel for the Severus + Lucius relationship, because they are friends. Sirius calls Severus Lucius’ “lapdog,” and Narcissa calls him Lucius’ “oldest friend.” Lucius is also part of the welcoming committee when Severus is first sorted into Slytherin. He’s five years older (I think Jason Isaacs is the only Harry Potter adult the same age as the character he plays), which would have affected the dynamic between him and Severus a lot in school. Personally, I think it makes sense for Lucius to be a little protective of this brilliant half-blood kid with no money. And as an adult, there’s some guilt mixed in there as well. Severus probably would not have been sucked into the Voldemort thing nearly as deep or nearly as fast if it hadn’t been for Lucius, and the war kind of destroyed him. Lucius remembers a younger Severus who was modding potions, inventing spells, coming up with cheeky nicknames for himself, and that person is gone. That’s a big part of the reason he’s so invested in the Severus/Remus relationship in Prison of the Phoenix. Something about Remus has managed to wake up parts of that younger Severus, and Lucius thinks that’s fantastic.

I also think Lucius might be the character who knows Voldemort the best. He’s one of the only Death Eaters who Voldemort calls by their first name (Bellatrix, Severus, and Draco are the others) and he’s weirdly familiar with his “slippery friend” Lucius, addressing the whole speech about how/why he returned to him, for some reason? Anything that helps Voldemort make sense as a person I’ll take, and to me it makes sense that young Tom Riddle charmed Abraxas Malfoy, Lucius’ father, first. The dates are right, and he’s exactly Tom’s type - rich, pureblood, probably easily flattered (let’s be honest) and sitting on a pile of magical artifacts. It’s very Hepzibah Smith vibes, is what I’m saying. And rich, posh, popular seventeen year olds don’t join cults. But if Lucius’ father was already in a cult… 

It also makes sense to me that Tom Riddle got sort of stuck when he killed Marvolo Gaunt, and made his first horcrux at sixteen. He has this fascination with sixteen year old pureblood wizards (so Barty, Draco, and Lucius would have fit this profile.) He sort of wants to be them, but also sort of wants to break them? It’s messy, and complicated. It’s creepy and compelling, that Lucius is aging but this spectre that’s dominated his life isn’t. 

And so when Lucius gives Ginny the diary in Book 2… it makes sense that he’s just trying to get rid of it. He was just at Borgin and Burkes selling dark artifacts, but knows that the diary is worse. He needs to make sure it can’t possibly be traced back to him. So he gives it to the daughter of the head of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office. (It is an enchanted muggle artifact, after all.) If Arthur Weasley finds it and deals with it, fine. If Ginny is discovered with it in a way that blows up in Arthur’s face, also fine. If it does get to Hogwarts and does open the Chamber of Secrets - well Draco is going to be fine, and it might undermine Dumbledore. If it was really important to Lucius that the diary rid the school of muggleborns… he would have given it to Draco had him use it. Or given it to Draco, and told him to leave it somewhere for an enemy to find. But Lucius doesn’t do that, because he doesn’t want Voldemort back and his politics just aren’t that important to him. 

The one trait I did give Lucius that doesn’t go back to the books is just being madly in love with Narcissa. Lucius is an unrepentant wife guy. (And I mean… it doesn’t contradict anything. There isn’t anything in the books to suggest that he isn’t a wife guy.)  I honestly did that for structural reasons. I’m writing a romance with Severus, who has the emotional awareness of a stack of roofing tiles. He just really, really needed a friend he could ask for relationship advice.

I think if Law’s parents and Corazon lived, his dad and Corazon would be having a barbecue and drinking beer. They’d be besties.

Lami would love Corazon.

Surprisingly, he’s listened to every single Led Zeppelin album growing up! His favorite album is Physical Graffiti. His top picks from the album are Houses of the Holy and Boogie with Stu.

His favorite Led Zeppelin song is The Ocean.

His favorite genre of YouTube video is the “Every time I get hit in Minecraft my computer is coded to generate 30 ender dragons” one. Not the theoretical videos like “Was Sans really just a skeleton?” Or “The dark secret behind Cardcaptor Sakura”, but like the ones where people mod the games or play games at an unplayable setting.

(And no. None of these are real videos LOL)

After a long day, sometimes Law will join him to watch like a historical documentary that might be a tad bit too graphic for Law. Corazon, passing out on the other couch, will just exclaim.

And immediately it’s some mildly grotesque image.

Law still looks and doesn’t even flinch. He doesn’t really care.

“As you can see, the bullet wound went straight through the man’s abdomen-“

“Don’t look, Law (falling asleep)”

When Law is sad or going through a traumatic memory, he’ll let Law cuddle up in his coat for comfort.

Corazon makes spaghetti for Law every Sunday night and takes him out for ice cream afterwards.

How many responses did we get? 169! (Wow, thank you!)

When we asked how interested you were in the seasons theme, with 1 being "not my thing" and 5 being "super excited", 119 of you answered with a 5, 44 answered with a 4, and 6 answered with a 3- and no one answered a 1 or a 2!

6.5% of you wanted just a digital zine, 18.9% wanted just a physical zine, and 74.6% wanted both digital and physical!

104 of you wanted to show your interest by buying and 103 wanted to show your interest by applying to contribute! 13 of you were interested as moderators, 82 as page artists, 48 as merch artists, 48 as writers, and 54 just wanted to buy!

When it came to how much you would be willing to pay (in USD):

For the Physical Zine with merch, 58 of you (34%) said you'd be willing to pay $50-55, 55 of you (32.5%) would be willing to pay $55-60, 34 of you (20.1%) said you'd be willing to pay $60-65, 11 of you (6.5%) would be willing to pay $65-70, and 11 (6.5%) of you also said you'd pay more than $70.

For the Physical Zine without merch, 68 of you (40.2%) said you'd be willing to pay $20-25, 78 of you (46.2%) said you'd pay $25-30, and 23 of you (13.6%) said you'd pay $30-35.

For the Digital Zine, 142 of you (84%) said you'd pay $15-20, 24 of you (14.2%) said you'd pay $20-25, and 3 of you (1.8%) said you'd pay $25-30.

117 of you (69.2%) said you wanted merch, 48 (28.4%) of you said maybe you wanted merch, and 4 of you (2.4%) said merch wasn't necessary!

Couple extra words I spotted: "Were doors even real? Were they were just illusions that looked and felt like solid walls until you tried to pass through them?" "Dude, the way you keep talking, I'm pretty sure this is whole thing is this close to being illegal." Also, I feel like Fiddleford is more hillbilly than redneck? But that's not a spelling/grammar error and I don't know enough about either to be sure, so.

Speaking as a resident deep in redneck country who's spent 30+ years surrounded on all sides by self-identified rednecks: you're right, his overall aesthetic as a person is more what people would associate with "hillbilly." I went with "redneck" to describe his lab for two reasons:

The connotations of "hillbilly" are "technologically-backwards Appalachian poor white guy." The connotations of "redneck" are "rural Deep South poor white guy (probably a farmer)." The aesthetic I'm trying to call to mind with his mad scientist lab—machinery cobbled together out of junkyard parts like old cars—is closer to "farms with rusted-out old tractors and cars that I pass when I'm driving between towns" or "junk I have personally seen in my uncle's dairy barn" or "insanely modded trucks for mud racing" than it is to what's called to mind when people think of Appalachia.

Fiddleford's aesthetic is hillbilly; but his aesthetic is also "Old West prospector," which. He isn't. Culturally, he grew up on a pig farm in Tennessee. Pig farm probably ain't up in the mountains. His geography has him straddling right on the line between "technically just outside Appalachia" and "part of the South depending on who you ask." To my mind "hog farmer" tips his background over slightly stronger to "redneck" than "hillbilly," but like, only by 5%.

So I think both descriptors could fit him situationally depending on the context and what's being emphasized. In this context, that one fit the image I was trying to emphasize better. But I use both in various places; in an upcoming chapter Bill snidely refers to him as "the Beverly Hillbilly," which is an absolutely devastating zinger assuming you're familiar with 1960s sitcoms.

What’s your favorite Sims death?

None (hate it when it happens); the most frequent one in my gameplays is the old age one.

Alpha CC or Maxis Match?   A mix between the two, it depends how well the CC matches the game's art style.

Do you cheat your sims weight? Not really; what I cheat is how muscular my female sims are as I play a lot the Acrobat career in TS3 Showtime and my girls bulk up too fast and too much.

Do you move objects? Ever since I learned about this particular (and very useful) cheat, yes.

Do you have a  YouTube for sims? Yes (as I'm an ex-machinima creator), but these days I'm only using it when I have animations to share.

How has your “Sims style” changed throughout your years of playing? In every possible way. I put a lot more thought into my builds (and worlds), my sims no longer look like aliens (I used to make them have these big anime eyes) and my gameplays are more wish-based than ever.

Who’s your favorite CC creator? So many of them since I'm a big CC hoarder. As Daniel said, everyone who brings something to this game is a champion and deserves accolades.

How do you edit your pictures? For more aesthetic pics I use Reshade and PS (although I don't remember ever posting these types of pics), but I usually just slightly adjust the brightness, contrast, saturation and exposure in PS as I love the TS3's default art style (I'm just spicing it up a little).

What expansion/ gamepack is your favorite? Kinda all of the expansion packs?! Mainly Seasons, World Adventures, Late Night, Island Paradise, Generations. Also love all the functional store content and worlds.

i'll start with jori since she's the first one i created! i know it may not seem like it lately but she's the main baby of the other 2 main babies i have! ive projected so much of myself and interests onto her that i became attached quickly lmao! she's also the one who i insert into every piece of media that im consuming and like enough. like, if im playing dead space i totally imagine her in the place of isaac. or if im playing a backrooms game she's the one running around and trying to escape from the monsters lmfao! her story has taken different shapes and changes since i actually brought her over from red dead online. her twin brother, mika, doesnt exist in red dead online and was solely create for cyberpunk purposes. i love the pic on the left because i just think she looks really badass lmao! and i like the one on the right because im not usually patient enough to set up sets and backgrounds but this time i stuck it out and i loved it! it's simple compared to what others can do but im still proud of it!

next is the love of her life, driss! back when i first started getting into modding my game i actually shipped her with river. i was trying to get a cute shot of her and river looking out at the sunset over the ocean, but sine i was so new to modding i didnt know bigger characters like river had a different locomotion type so i couldnt get any poses to work. as a test i replaced an NPC couple with jori and driss and that was when i fell into a hole lmfao! i thought they looked so much better together so i kept them going! their ship name is Broken and Beautiful because both of them have past traumas that still effect them but they found comfort and understanding in each other. i love how soft both of these pics are! especially the fire behind them in the one on the right!

lottie is my second of the main 3! she also started out as a red dead online OC! i usually try to make her come off as a flowery, cottage core, disney princess aesthetic type. she's the softest and shyest of my OCs but she can be fierce too! she smiles at strangers in the street and will lend a hand if they look like they need it but she does it with caution because... its night city lmao! i chose these pictures in particular because i just thought they were the coolest ones. i do have some pics that showcase her as soft and flowery but i just couldnt resist showing these ones instead! the one on the left was made to be a tarot card called The World. the pic on the right was me trying out a greaser AU on her! i really love how they both came out!

the last of the main 3 is phoenix! i made her fully expecting to just leave her to collect dust, just like certain other OCs, (and i feel so bad for them 😔) but i became attached to her very quickly too. i based a chunk of her personality off of vash the stampede from the 1998 anime trigun. after a short while of that i actually ended up shipping her with him lmfao! currently she doesnt have a backstory because nothing has really inspired me yet but at least i know some things about her current life! i think these pics are perfect for show casing her as she currently is. she lives in clutter but not, like, dirty clutter if that makes sense? she just likes having stuff and buying things that interest her. i mean doesnt everyone? haha! she doesnt really save her money for anything other than rent and bills, everything else is purely impulse. her favorite treat is donuts and when she's willing to share one with you thats how you know she likes you! her favorite thing is to make people smile!

i took these ones for @holofishes and i totally consider wren to be one of jori's besties! i think they'd have so much to talk about and i get such warm vibes when i see them together! jori is usually very sweet and kind but when it comes to her friends she'd kick anyone's ass 😉 the sunflowers and butterflies in the first pic took so long to place! but it was totally worth it! they're both rays of sunshine!

More than just Wario

This video about Anton, Wario, and a Doom Mod being Wario-likes is a pretty decent video.

But I would say that aside from the last one these games (specifically completed Pizza Tower and Antonblast) are not just Wario Likes.

They have Wario's punk aesthetic (which Yathzee labeled as Post-Punk) but a lot of the style is more western toon while Wario often employed a more eastern toon quality. Anton and Peppino's animations and sound effects often evoke saturday morning cartoons and other famous late 90s early 2000s shows. That's more of a western style than any Wario game has ever suggested having.

I propose that just like how Metroidvania is a portmanteau of two different games. This emerging genre should also defined by its relation to currently existing games and one of those games is Wario but I want to add two others. Mario (specifically Mario 64) and Sonic The Hedgehog.

We all know about Wario Land 4 but Mario 64 and the general Sonic the Hedgehog franchise (the good games) all share this innate desire for high speed vertical and horizontal movement and a reward for high level, high momentum play.

We have Pizza Tower, We also have Anton Blast.

But wait there's more. There's Penny's Big Breakaway, Sparks the Electric Jester series (yes, there are three Sparks games and you should be playing them), there's two Freedom Planet games, Pseudoregalia, Beserk Boy, and hopefully Rollin Rascal.

These are just the ones I know about. But you get what I'm saying right? The whole point of these styles of platformers is for you to keep your speed up and spend very little time staying still.

This is very divergent from the platformers of the past. In the 90s when platformers were king. Most platformers were actually quite bad. If you owned a Nintendo you played Mario, if you owned a Sega system you owned Sonic, and if you owned a PC you had Jazz Jackrabbit. Outside of those three, things got really hairy.

Sure, the platformer genre would give birth to many classics but a lot of these games treated platforming as the main obstacle, with limited lives and a non-existent save system in the early days, you could get hard core punished for not having pixel perfect platforming. Almost every jump came with a little hope and a prayer as a blind jump could be your last.

By the time 3d platformers became a thing this whole design ethos crippled the genre and platformers kept supplementing other game mechanics to make up for the limited ceiling they settled with. Eventually they stopped being platformers and became "Adventure games!"

Around the mid to late 2000s the platformer genre was rebooted, into wank Indie Games.

Platformers slowed to a crawl and were overloaded with puzzles and a vibe that isn't high energy. And oh god, Pixel perfect platforming. The bane of my existence.

These were the dark times. If you weren't a pretentious twat you basically stopped playing platformers and just spent years pining for reboots to Spyro and Banjo. And maybe. Just maybe. A good Sonic game.

Even Mario got a little stale in that period.

But now things have changed. Game devs have realized that people love watching and playing platformers that let you go vroom.

Maybe that's what we should call them! Platvroomers!

Hm. Still workshopping it, but it's important to separate them from platformers that don't fit this bill. The recent Spyro and Crash games while fun don't fit this archetype as the Spyro franchise was part of that transition from platformer to adventure games which caused the whole premise of Spyro (flying/gliding around to expand your reach and test your mastery of flight related platforming) to melt away and it turned into a series of mini games and game slices where you played not Spyro in the Spyro game.

Crash 4 completely misunderstood what was and wasn't worth bringing back. Pixel perfect platforming and collecting an absurd amount of baubles ended up being a particularly unique way to punish people who were devoted to the series.

Yooka Laylee screwed up by being overly faithful to Banjo and Kazooie, ignoring the fact that as harsh as Nuts and Bolts was about the old Banjo Kazooie games, It wasn't pulling criticisms out of its ass.

SO. Toys for Bob. I noticed that you are going indie and that you are going to develop new stories and new characters.

If you want my unprofessional opinion. You should develop platvroomer because those are really fun to play and is a lean and mean way to make a video game. Combine that with your impeccable art style and something truly nice will be born.

In the meantime, I'll continue monitoring the progress on Ristar 2

That grappling and swinging mechanic has a lot of potential.

🏛️   Glenn is a level 15 sorcerer! I will roll for stats once his sheet is done.

🏛️ Everything is the same story-wise, but in this AU Glenn is swapped with Henry! Meaning that he was the one who grew up in Closevale with Bill Close. Swap!Bill, unlike Canon!Barry, liked deferring his responsibilities to everyone else who wasn’t him; he got away with this because everyone loved him! He was just so charismatic (and definitely wasn’t brainwashing everyone)!

As a kid, Glenn became a city planner of sorts since, when Swap!Meryl Streep arrived in Faerun and founded the town of Closevale, he took some...liberties with the infrastructure. When the leadership of the town is shifty, things are bound to break. But, of course, people respected him as Prince Glenn and he managed to bring the town up to some level of decency.

Somewhere along the way, Glenn ends up using his father’s mirror (passed down from the Streeps) to escape to Earth. He loses his memories, but is saved by Morgan Freeman! He gets a doctorate in architecture and begins working in San Dimas as one, but retires to become a professor after the birth of their child, Nicholas Close-Freeman. Turns out, he likes that better!

The rest of his story follows similarly--on the way to save his son from his father, he discovers he has innate magic. His son is affected by the Rogue card and hates him. He gets stabbed by his son after leaving Faerun, etc. etc.

Currently, he’s just trying to get things back to normal and repair the relationship between him and his son.
