Molly Surazhsky Miss Americhka Opening Reception: Saturday, January 7th, 5-7pm Pictured: Installation view, Molly Surazhsky, Miss Americhka Lowell Ryan Projects is pleased to present Miss Americhka a solo exhibition by Molly Surazhsky. Miss Americhka depicts modes of self-portraiture and performance art through sculpture, photography, installation, and digitally printed textile-based works that explore, critique, and satirize this uniquely polarizing time in America’s political landscape. The title of the exhibition is a reference to the artist's grandmother’s endearing Russian-inflected nickname for America. This will be Molly Surazhsky’s first exhibition with the gallery. Molly Surazhsky (b. Queens, NY, 1992) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and Los Angeles, CA. A child of Ukrainian émigrés, Molly Surazhsky’s practice is tinged with an inherited post-Soviet cynicism and humor. This underlying attitude emerges in her ongoing studies of the corporatization of working-class lives, a critique of America’s role in international affairs with Russia and the countries in the former U.S.S.R., an acknowledgment of the realities between two opposing political philosophies, capitalism and socialism, and the outcomes when a lack of balance between the two is employed on an economic, social and psychological level. Utilizing sculpture, sound, photography, textile design, and handmade garments, Surazhsky articulates detailed narratives involving themes of hypocrisy, propaganda, class, healthcare, and survival. #mollysurazhsky #lowellryanprojects #class #survival #propaganda #laart #hypocrisy #textile #photography #art #selfportrait #instalationart #artwork #russian #humor #cynicism #anerica #ukraine #digitalart #politics #memes (at Lowell Ryan Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnCxW7GPXri/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thank you @hypebae and @hiiighfrequency for spotlighting this incredible work of @mollysurazhsky 💃💃💃 Artist Molly Surazhsky is currently displaying her solo exhibition, Miss Americhka at the Lowell Ryan Projects, with one specific work you need to have to witness: I ❤️American Boys. Highlighting the "unrealistic roles women in the former Soviet Union were expected to perform," Surazhsky literally places the f-ckery of the patriarchy, front and center. Specifically in Western culture, women are expected to not only cook, clean and make a house a home, while also embodying the essence of the sexiest, most ethereal being to walk this Earth. If not, they're forced to deal with the consequences of a patriarchy that was never kind to any type of woman to begin with. Swipe ⬅️ to see more #mollysurazhsky #hypebae #fuckthepatriarchy 😳 (at Lowell Ryan Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoI7vFPPMoa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Molly Surazhsky’s large-scale banner hung on the facade of the gallery depicts the artist posing in a gown titled Slava Culture War!, 2022 - a work that is on view in the exhibition. The image of the gown displays various flags including the Pride flag, Israeli, Palestinian, Soviet, and American flags collaged amongst others. Surazhsky reflects on the use of these various flags displayed as emoji’s and/or memes across social media platforms invoking a catalyst of arguments with no resolution. The title of the work references Donald Trump’s infamous and unofficial slogan “The Storm is Coming,” while offering a visual depiction of an outcome of this divisive period.
