Teenagers not liking or even hating their parents is not typical teen behavior. At the root of all anger is a child that is not getting something they they need in life. There is something missing in their world. Our jobs as parents is to discover a way though the masks of emotions and find a way to reconnect with them and provide our children with the attention and unconditional love they desire. The parents biggest misconception in doing this is thinking it can happen overnight or there is some magical potion to make that connection. Children takes years to build up this anger and resentment so it is going to take time to turn things around. In situations like this we are being taught by our children to have patience. That is just one of the lessons we are supposed to be learning when their emotions manifest into anger and hate. We can coach them or control them but we can’t do both. When our children see nothing but perfection they become self conscious about their own shortcomings and challenges which results in low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. My parents never cry or have issues so how can I even begin to think that the problem I have I should even bother them about. I should be stronger and figure it out. I don’t want them to think I am stupid, weak and I would hate for them to look down upon me. This is what we get when we never show our children our failures and display our true emotions. We bury and hide them because we are afraid they won’t be able to handle it. However, it is doing more harm then good because If they don’t see us as humans how can we expect them to come to us when they need help. Why do we deny our children’s emotions? Why do we tell them they are not sad when they truly are? How would we feel if we had just been fired from our job and someone told Us we shouldn’t feel angry? Nobody has the right to deny our feelings because no 2 people are alike. When our children struggle with depression we feel lost, helpless and nowhere to turn. We are scared for their safety and don’t want them to suffer with their own thoughts and as a result we try to remedy the situation quickly by getting therapist and doctors to prescribe meds. That should be our last resort. As parents it is our responsibility to support them and help them discover the root of their depression in hopes that they may be able to overcome their thoughts with a little bit of our guidance . So help them name that feeling, let them know they are never alone and actively listen to them when they share their feelings. Don’t judge, advise or deny their feelings of hopelessness. As parents we need to become a component of the solution. When we engage with our children in a fearful, anxious, frustrated on sad state they reflect our emotion and our problems becomes theirs. We don’t do this intentionally because this is learned behavior from our own parents. Children model their parents behavior and grow up most of the time just like us. That explains a lot.
