A cross-partisan group of MPs voted to kill a bill Wednesday that would have allowed parliamentarians to opt out of swearing an oath of allegiance to King Charles — a victory for monarchists eager to preserve the Crown's standing in Canada.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet and most Liberal and Conservative MPs on hand voted down the private member's bill, while Bloc Québécois and NDP MPs joined some members from the two largest parties — many of them Quebec-based — to vote in favour of legislation that would have diminished Charles's role in Parliament. The final result was 113-197.
The vote keeps Canada's Constitution as originally written. Section 128 requires that every newly elected or appointed parliamentarian swear they will be "faithful and bear true allegiance" to the reigning monarch.
Under Canada's founding document, a member cannot legally assume his or her seat in Parliament until they've taken that oath. [...]
John Fraser is the president of Institute for the Study of the Crown in Canada and a prominent monarchist. He has called the legislation "a stupid idea."
He said Canada's longstanding link to the Crown, an institution above the whims of partisan politics, is something to celebrate.

Head of UK’s leading anti-monarchy group arrested at coronation protest
Republic’s Graham Smith held at protest on King Charles III’s procession route in central London
Daniel Boffey Chief reporter, Sat 6 May 2023 08.31 BST
The head of the UK’s leading republican movement has been arrested at an anti-monarchist protest on King Charles III’s procession route.
Graham Smith had been collecting drinks and placards for demonstrators at Trafalgar Square when he was detained by police on the Strand in central London.
It is understood Smith was detained after bringing a megaphone to the demonstration. The Met police had tweeted earlier this week that they would have a “low tolerance” of those seeking to “undermine” the day.
Harry Stratton, a director at Republic, who arrived as Smith and the others were detained, said: “They were collecting the placards and bringing them over when the police stopped them.
“The guys asked why and they were told: we will tell you that once we have searched the vehicle. That’s when they arrested the six organisers. We asked on what grounds they had been arrested but they wouldn’t say. It is a surprise as we had had a number of meetings with the police. They had been making all the right noises”.

Honestly, I'm torn between hoping Charles dies of a catastrophic prostate explosion tomorrow and hoping that he sticks it out as long as possible, because an exploded king can easily be replaced, but a king who's so profoundly uncharismatic that every day he's on the throne he erodes public support for the institution of the British monarchy just by existing is a tough act to follow.

As someone who lives in a tourist town I can say truthfully that having "but think about tourism " as a reason for the fucking monarchy is hilarious
My town has one castle we use as a museum, a ferris wheel, some good mountain views, an old train station, couple of expensive restaurants and hotels and lemme tell you every June/July we have thousands of fucks coming here to spend money and we don't have to pay for a family of racists inbred pedophiles to dress in their dead relatives clothes and do bullshit traditional little theaters for no reason

The more I see my media telling me to mourn, the angrier I get.
I never knew this woman. The only personal impact she had on my life was when one of her relatives died or married, I would get a day off school. I never knew Elizabeth, I knew the Queen. The Queen who wore a crown coated in diamonds stolen from other countries, a crown drenched in the blood her family collected over lifetimes of imperialism.
I should not be told to mourn a 96 year old woman who lived a life of obsene wealth and experience and died surrounded by loved ones, aided by the best healthcare in the world.
The crown disgusts me and anyone who wears it is not someone I mourn. The Queen and her family earnt none of their influence, they earnt none of my respect, and I do not mourn them
