both of their relations to shanks too, with marco depicted next to him regularly in the present, and luffy's long intertwined history with him. they share so many connections yet they are so starkly different; they know all the same people yet at different times. they could piece together so many people's entireties if they put their heads together and each recounted their memories.

marco would gleam to hear about shanks and beckman in the east blue, rayleigh in his old age, gaban, etc. luffy would sit in awe to know about shanks through the ages, oden as more than a story, whitebeard, rayleigh, even roger, in their primes. marco has seen the world so thoroughly, nearly more than anyone as whitebeard's righthand of over three decades, and he sees the future in luffy knowing all that past. his faith, his bet in luffy, means so much narratively.

marco and luffy's interactions are a small detail of one piece that i adore so much.
