Uncaged
WARNING: WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ IS STUFF NOBODY CARES ABOUT. READING THIS COULD RESULT IN MILD BOREDOM. At what point did Monstercat Uncaged begin? Duh, Uncaged Volume 1. But... Really? Think about it, there were songs considered Instinct in that album. Does that make it Uncaged in its purest form? Monstercat released 30 main compilation albums, before they switched to the Uncaged name. But they hadn’t really settled on a theme that really differed from what I shall call Classic Monstercat in this blog... Until Uncaged Volume 4. So Uncaged Volume 4 is where Uncaged began? Glad we got that squared away. Not so fast. Uncaged Volume 4 is not the first compilation album with only Uncaged song. Nether are Volumes 3 or 2. So which album then? 001 Launch week. All 7 songs in that album are considered Uncaged. So maybe Uncaged has been with us all this time. Okay, but 2011 was a huge year for Uncaged songs, that year was during the middle of the Brostep craze. And the album only had 7 songs. Can we really count that? But it gets more complicated. Because the first album to start featuring all of their songs with the signature Uncaged thumbnail was Uncaged Volume 5, right after the split with Instinct. That’s another thing. Maybe Uncaged truly began on Uncaged Vol 5 and the fact that al the songs on Volume 4 was Unacged is a coincidence. The split happened midway through releasing Volume 4 songs, so it’s not crazy to say that Volume 4 isn’t pure Uncaged like Volume 5 is. Furthermore, 2017 didn’t have an Unacged section in Best Of 2017. Both Uncaged and Instinct were together in the album. Lastly, Uncaged Vol 4 had 30 songs like all the albums before it, Volume 5 had the 40 we know today. Perhaps it was so that Monstercat didn’t really know how to differ from Classic until Volume 5? But then again, Volume 4 was released in 2018, after the split, and besides, the real “Uncaged as you know it today has truly begun” song was The Drop by Gammer, which was released during Volume 4. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA And of course, there’s the argument, Unacged started with Uncaged Volume 1, so Unacged started then. One more thought for you. Perhaps Uncaged started with 001 Launch Week after all, and Instinct started not with Instinct Vol 1, but rather with 002 Early Stage. Making every album from 002 to 030 (As well as the first 3 Uncaged albums) both Unacged and Instinct. In any case, it’s up to you to determine when Uncaged started. I am under the personal opinion that it started with Volume 4. But you can say it started with 018 Frontier for all I care.

Monstercat Celebrates 8th Anniversary with Stacked New Compilation, Comic Book and More
Monstercat has traditionally been known to go all out for their birthday, and they are well within their right to do so. With every passing year, Monstercat (the Canadian label that started out as a small platform for independent EDM artists to get their music out into the world) continues to boast bigger and bigger achievements; from doing releases for massive artists to putting out chart-dominating radio singles to doing takeovers at some of the world’s most celebrated dance music festivals.
The label saw several major achievements in the last year specially, including the successful launch of their “Instinct” imprint (which was largely aided by Noisestorm’s April Fools’ song “Crab Rave,” which skyrocketed in popularity later in the year). Because of these achievements, it makes sense that Monstercat would want to have a big celebration this year, even if “8” isn’t typically a significant anniversary number.
Needless to say, fans didn’t know what quite to expect with Monstercat’s 8 year anniversary celebration. In years past, the label had done everything from sales to mega-mashups to compilations to wild, massive collaborations. This year, however, Monstercat gave fans something truly unexpected: a comic book.
Entitled Monstercat’s 8 Year Anniversary Adventure, the comic follow’s the label’s mascot on his journey to find himself, directly following the events of Monstercat 030 – Finale. The entire comic book can be found digitally here.
The comic is soundtracked by an undeniably stacked compilation album, which features eight brand new tunes from long-time label favorites and newcomers alike, as well as a slew of unforeseen collabs. Among those making appearances are Au5, Infected Mushroom, Rogue and Stephen Walking. As far as collaborations go, some of the more intriguing came from Ephixa & Going Quantum (who came together for the first time on the soft-spoken, melodic D&B track “Let’s Roll”) and Pegboard Nerds & Tokyo Machine (a long awaited pairing that resulted in the wild, chiptune-infused electro sounds of “MOSHI”). WRLD, Keepsake (Richard Caddock) and Laszlo also joined forces for the indie-influenced mega-collab “Back to You.” The entire compilation can be listened to below:
Monstercat capped off the celebration on Friday with a new merch drop, as well as a VR party done in collaboration with Sansar (now the home of Monstercat’s radio show “Call of the Wild”). With the exception of Infected Mushroom, Rogue, AMIDY and Karra, every artist that appeared on the compilation showed up for the VR festivities, providing virtual live sets for participating fans.
Monstercat undoubtedly put together a great celebration for their 8th anniversary. We can’t wait to see what they do for their 10th!
