I wouldn't really say Ducktales led me to getting into rottmnt, but it might have played a small part in it? Specifically all the jokes about Ben Schwartz playing blue cartoon characters, people mostly tended to point out Dewey, Sonic and Leo, but I was only really familiar with the first two and only knew Leo as "the blue ninja turtle" back then haha XD And while I already knew about rottmnt, all the blue-jokes drew more of my attention to the show so in a way you could say Ducktales indirectly in a small way contributed to me checking out rottmnt lol??

I'm new to Tumblr. How do Tumblr users usually engage with each other?

well first of all welcome haha. the main ways to engage with people are:

liking and reblogging. platforms like instagram and tiktok run on likes and an algorithm, but on tumblr, people almost exclusively use their dashboard and turn off suggested content, so they’re only seeing what people actually reblog onto their dash. that’s why people on this site are so adamant about reblogs, because likes basically do nothing. i saw someone say once that anything you would like on a different social media, you should reblog on here, and i totally agree. and don’t worry about how old a post is, or about reblogging something you’ve previously reblogged. there are posts from 2014 that i regularly see on my dash a decade later, so literally don’t feel awkward, it’s 100% normal to engage with old posts.

tags. there are three main ways tags are used: labeling original content so people find it in searches, internal organization systems when reblogging or posting (for instance, many people have a tag for their original posts, and will tag reblogs by fandom or character or whatever - important note that reblogs do not show up in search results), and to make sotto voce comments on a post. it’s normal for people to make jokes, add their own commentary, ramble about something semi relevant, or say something to op in the tags on posts they reblog.

reblog additions. every time you reblog, you have the chance to add something to the post, which unlike tags will be retained when someone reblogs from you. a good rule of thumb is to comment instead of tagging when it’s something you actually want other people to engage with, as opposed to tags where you’re just kind of expressing yourself lol. don’t be surprised however if you see people’s tags getting screenshotted and added to a reblog. if this happens because the screenshotter likes what the tag writer said, it’s jokingly referred to as “passing peer review.” (and of course people screenshot tags to criticize or mock them as well.) essentially, tags are like being at a big group dinner and saying something to the person next to you as an aside, and then sometimes that person goes “hey everyone listen to this”

post comments. there’s also an option on every post (unless op has turned it off) for people to comment on the post itself, not on a specific reblog. mostly this is useful for talking to people on personal posts or posts with reblogs turned off. on a bigger post, just reblog it and put your thoughts in an addition or tag.

asks. seems like you figured this one out! lmao. asks are used for a wide variety of things, but essentially it can either be a prompt for someone to make a post or a way of having an interaction/conversation with someone without dming them.

dms. these work like dms everywhere else, except the functionality is limited and it kinda sucks.

games. there are also many varieties of games that people play with each other, ranging from ask games (things like “rec me some music” or a post with prompts and people send you some from that list), tag games (typically there are questions you answer then you tag other people to fill them out for themselves) handwriting tags, follow chains, giveaways, name/url playlists, and more. with the addition of polls, brackets have gotten popular too (eg the tumblr sexyman bracket). there also used to be a lot of in-character ask blogs, where a user would set up a blog and roleplay as a specific character that people could send questions to (there still are some but way fewer and way less popular than there used to be)

to be honest i feel like i have to put “discourse” and “drama” on this list too. people on this site loveeee having the most insane arguments of all time and then everyone else memes the hell out of it. google “sonic for real justice” for an example lmao. (of course there’s also very unfunny political and fandom discourse that goes on as well. i would advise you to avoid discourse blogs as a general rule regardless of whether you agree with their position or not)

tagging people. you can also @ people in posts you think they’d like or if you feel like they have relevant input. typically this is something you would do either to people you’ve spoken to before, or a big blog with an established persona and rapport with their followers (eg if you follow a blog about snakes and you see a random post with snake info that seems wrong but you’re not sure, so you tag them to ask for their expertise).

and this isn’t a specific “mode” of communication but it’s also a thing to “interpret” (for lack of a better word) other people’s posts. for instance, people drawing a photo from the original post (i cant find it but there was a post going around recently where op posted an aesthetic photo of an egg cooking and then several people painted it), or people trying/recreating something a post was about (example). it was also a thing for a minute there where people would rewrite funny exchanges as shakespearean dialogue

those are all the ways i can think of, although im sure i’ve missed some (if other people think of any pls add on!). good luck, and i hope you’re able to meet some cool people!

do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? i love digging deep into lore and piecing it together even if its not immediately evident and a bit fragmented (its the soulsborne enjoyer in me). incredibly loosely speaking. i want edward to realise he's been a bit fucked up actually and have to sit in that thought instead of shrugging past it as usual. i want chad to sit with someone and just connect with them so they don't feel as alone (yes this has happened i just love when this happens). i want denning to forcibly feel an emotion, and whether they get better or worse from it might depend entirely on their company.

🍬 Do you write for multiple fandoms? If yes, what is your favorite fic of yours for each fandom? Not right now!! So far I've only written for the Sonic fandom which is why I reblogged the ask game to this blog haha. But I've been thinking about writing some fics for Murder Drones. I have a few ideas actually!! One would explore how J feels and copes with being alone after ep 8 and I would also love to write a fic where Uzi deals with having Cyn (and possibly fragments of Doll) in her programming now. Very much fics that explore different aspects of their characters. OH THAT REMINDS ME!! I also want to write more fic for MDAU so that's like... Sonic and Murder Drones combined haha. I gotta do more for that AU.......

💡How many WIPs do you currently have? I think 3, maybe 4 if you count the MDAU stuff I already have written. The WIPs are: Memories and the Space Between chapter 3 (it's so close... hello! no worries, you are fine. thank you for liking the art! i personally don't like/ship sonadow and blazouge so it is only meant to be shadouge and sonaze. the premise was less a double date and more of, like, sitting together at a formal event to catch up etc, as i feel blaze and rouge would have an interesting friendship (acquaintanceship?) dynamic, and shadow and sonic would follow where they go haha

omg thank you!! Sorry it took me so long to reply, I loved this question and really wanted to do it right lol. My tastes and views are like a hodge podge of things I’ve read and seen, a paper here, and artist’s statement there, so it’s hard to gather lmao. But here’s some off the top of my head (might be long, sorry!):

Honestly the blog @997 has done more to shape and expand my ideas on art and aesthetics than any other, been following for years and has a special place in my heart

For queer theory:

The Xenofeminist Manifesto: A Politics for Alienation had a major impact in opening me up to ideas of abstraction, cunning, and scale in politics. It’s part of a broader left accelerationist/postcapitalist movement that I’m still one of those annoying people who likes what it has/had to say lol. This one is great, with absolute banger lines like “let a thousand sexes bloom!” and “if nature is unjust, change nature!”

Deadly and Slick: Sexual Modernity and the Making of Race is a more recent read, and does an amazing job talking about how the regulation of sexuality is intimately tied with the creation of race and its hierarchies, using colonial and postcolonial India and the UK as its focus.

The Penetrated Male by Jonathan Kemp is an amazing book on the anus(a subject I’m kinda obsessed with), specifically examining the anus and penetration beyond discourses on being penetrated as feminine and anal eroticism as pathology. If you’re into Wilde, Lacan, and Baudelaire, this is the book for you for anal examinations on them.

The Straight Mind by Monique Wittig is an injection of dialectics into examinations of sexuality, feminism, and power. Her rendering of sex as socially constructed and of lesbianism presents radical feminist politics without the biological essentialism by interpreting the idea that the proletariat is a class that advocates for its own abolition through a feminist and lesbian lens.

As for art:

More Brilliant Than the Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction is both written beautifully in that classic cyberpunk neologism style and offers a great critique on “authenticity” and “realism” as necessary components of good music through an examination of a lot of afrofuturist artists and advocates for alienation and abstraction as a way of breaking from dull “authenticity”

Who’s Afraid of Contemporary Art? by Jessica Cerasi and Kyung An is a good introduction to contemporary art for someone intimidated/unsure how they feel about it. I read it in one sitting when my car was stuck in the mechanics for three hours and I couldn’t leave haha

Maya Lin: Systematic Landscapes by Maya Lin and Richard Andrews. Maya Lin is mostly known for her memorials but her non-monument sculptural work is even better. Hearing her explain her craft and different interpretations of her work was really exciting.

Vienna Actionism: Art and Upheaval in 1960’s Vienna. I’m a sucker for Actionism, and this was an amazing book on the subject with insightful essays, photos, and descriptions of the performances that were held.

The journal e-flux and the website monoskop have changed my life to, amazing libraries of texts.

What annoys you about the Netflix version of Castlevania? 👀

Mostly the fact that it has become the face of the series. I pointed out already that on AO3, 2/3rds of Castlevania fics are based on the cartoon - at best, some fics aren't even tagged.

Tumblr is even worse. Search for "Castlevania" and notice how many posts are about the cartoon.

For more specific things... I may have become a fan of the series relatively recently, but to me the whole show feels like the showrunners really wanted to make a Berserk anime, and slapped on it the Castlevania aesthetic. And I'm a big Berserk fan! But not when you mix concepts this way. Just because both series deal with monsters and are set in the middle ages doesn't mean that they have quite the same vibe.

Then there is the questionable treatment of characters. Grant was adapted out of what was supposed to be a C3 adaptation because Ellis decided that his name was stupid and that his pirate-like appearance didn't fit the setting, even though Grant isn't a pirate, he's a thief. Trevor is pigeonholed in the character archetype of "drunkard asshole", even though he already had a fairly interesting personality in Curse of Darkness that could have been elaborated on, honorable but arrogant and hotheaded. Carmilla hasn't appeared much in the series, but the few times she did, she sure wasn't a radfem girlboss who dismissed Dracula as yet another "stupid old man". And boy help you if you like Hector, Isaac and/or St. Germain, because they bothered to bring them back, but the former is... well, I don't know what other term to use but he was pretty much ukeified, with how his main trait seems to be naiveté and how he gets imprisoned, beaten up and enslaved (did we really need to see his dick flap around as Lenore is beating the shit out of him? Now you're just humiliating him); and the other two have nothing in common with their game counterparts other than their names and somewhat their powers. You know why I reblog Isaac fanart from 10 years ago? Because now the tag is full of posts about the Netflix character (even "Isaac Laforeze", even though by logic it makes no sense that Netflix!Isaac would be called that way, Julia Laforeze doesn't exist in the cartoon), with some fans even saying things like "sometimes wildly deviating from the source material is the best idea" :') also, how can you even write Death as not being the biggest Dracula simp? C'mon.

(yes I'm particularly bitter about Isaac. I would have accepted if they just replaced him with an OC, and I'm sure that Netflix!Isaac is a great character too so I understand why he's so popular. Replacing the original version with an OC but keeping the same name is just sleazy, like you want credit for "fixing" the "bad" character but not putting any thought in salvaging what could be salvageable, it's lazy)

Another thing that I find sus is the overabundance of OCs. I'm biased because I watched in real time IDW Sonic shift focus from the canon characters to the new characters to the point that the cover of #50 didn't even feature the titular character, but it says something that big bad Dracula dies halfway through, and then the series is about a council of 4 new villains. And yes, I'm biased because of scenes like this:

Tell me if it doesn't look like the show really wants to show how #girlboss Carmilla is compared to dumb Dracula. He can't even command a room.

Then there are... dubious writing moments. The series makes the common mistake of thinking that swearwords are witty, to the point that even Alucard says "fuck you" to Trevor and shows him the middle finger (because haha he's becoming like trevor). St. Germain is just embarassing, going from a refined yet quirky 19th century dandy man to someone who says "I am immortal and glorious, and all these other people smell of piss" or "God is now standing right in front of you. And soon, very, very, soon... he's going to have sex again". And Death... oh, Death, what happened to you...

I'm also baffled when they try to apply logic to vampire lore? It feels like the writers felt too smart for their own good. I can't find it on YT but at one point the character just stop in their tracks to argue the validity of the conception that vampires can't cross running water, just because. And the explanation to why every vampire hates crosses is just ridiculous, sorry.

And then there's the offensive stuff. Hector sticks his dick in Lenore, she tricks him into becoming her sex slave/pet, and yet in the next season they basically develop feelings for each other? And she's painted in a tragic light? She's basically Dahlia Hawthorne with a dom fetish (which I'm not even opposed to, she seems to be an interesting villain at first) and I'm supposed to feel sorry for her? In the same episode there's a random threesome between Alucard and two people he welcomed into the castle, but it was all a ruse to try to kill him, and he's traumatized for... a few episodes? Then he gets better? Just enough to show him pissing on their corpses. Thanks.

(and I'm not even getting into the fact that Ellis himself has been accused of sexual misconduct, which makes these scenes even more uncomfortable)

So yeah. I don't personally resent Netflixvania, and I know that there are some good moments in it ("Lisa, I'm killing our boy..."), but from what I've seen so far, the series simply doesn't deserve to massively overshadow the game series - not even because of quality issues, but because at the end of the day it doesn't have much to do with the games beyond some superficial references.

So I’m multifandom. You’ll probably mostly see me talking about Legend of Zelda, and Houseki No Kuni, but I like Paper Mario, Sonic, Deltarune, yadda yadda yadda lol. I am also bound to have inconsistent sprees of being obsessed with Star Fox. You can’t stop it. I have my own OCs too, they’re furries, I make art about them occasionally haha

Currently, the most extensive, and complicated project. It is an angsty story about Fi and Ghirahim (at it’s core), it’s filled to the brim with lore about the sword spirits, and Hylia… and just a lot lol. It has it’s own blog! Just for keeping things cleaned up around here. It’s @babyblueau, I’m gonna be posting the main comic only there, but some things I’ll post on this blog then reblog there. A Majora’s Mask AU! To explain it simply, what if there was a Café in Clock Town, what if Kafei and Cremia worked there? And what if… Cremia was stuck having to help Kafei get the Sun mask back?
