Touch-starved
MD-264N masterlist
Febuwhump day 1: touchstarved
@febuwhump
MD-264N wakes up.
1.1k
CWs: self-dehumanisation, fear of death, electric shock mention, conditioned whumpee, caretaker new master
MD-264N blinks itself awake. Its systems are not functioning at optimum efficiency but they're close to it, except for its ankle. There's uncomfortable sensation coming from that. But other than that it's much better than before.
Now. Where is it being stored? It has no restraints for… for some reason, and there's a window, so it isn't back at base. How did it get here?
Can it see the sky now?
One thing at a time. What is it wearing? It's far too light. The control harness and mitts are gone, and its clothes are… unusual. They're thick, soft, bright. The weapon looks at its arm, covered in baggy light blue soft fabric. So much brighter than it's allowed.
But it's not at base, so maybe it's what the people here want. That would make sense, right?
Next. This storage room. It's brighter than any at base, walls coloured light blue and pink. There's a wooden cabinet in the corner, a prosthetic forearm lying on it, and a window above the soft cot that MD-264N's on. That's unusual too. The weapon peers out of it as much as it can without moving, just about able to see a grey sky above.
That's its surroundings taken care of then. They don't make sense, but that's what's there. In that case, who brought it here? The last thing it remembers, it was on the street. Why did someone take it and put it in here? What do they want from it? Its hands are free, the only thing that makes sense is they want to use it, but there's no handlers here. This space is too big for the safe storage of weapons anyway.
MD-264N's throat goes tight. What happens if someone finds it out here? It's not safe. It doesn't know if this is what the people who put it here want but surely they want it to be secured safely.
MD-264N's eyes light on the cabinet, and it climbs off the soft cot it's been placed on and starts making its way towards it.
One foot goes on the floor, but when it tries to put its weight on the other foot, its ankle malfunctions and it collapses to the floor.
It attempts to push itself up as it hears footsteps, arms shaking, but it can't move. Aberrant moisture leaks out of the corners of its eyes. These people won't want a faulty weapon. They'll decommission it and then it'll never see the sky again.
The footsteps are very close now. MD-264N tries to kneel instead, desperate to be good enough to see the sky again.
"Hey, sweetheart, what are you doing on the floor? You're supposed to be resting." The voice is soft beside it, and the weapon's not sure who they're talking to. It sounds like they're talking to it but… you don't talk like that to weapons. Gentle, like it's a person. But there's no-one here. "Sit back on the bed, come on. Can you do that for me?"
MD-264N tries, it really does, but it can't move its leg. "This weapon is malfunctioning, sir, it– please." Please, please don't have it decommissioned, not yet.
"Okay. It's okay, sweetheart, I'll help you. I'm going to have to touch you, is that alright?"
"Yes, sir."
"Thank you." The speaker wraps an arm around it and helps it sit down on the cot. The arm is warm and the hand ungloved, and the weapon finds itself leaning into their touch. It stiffens. No, no that's bad, weapons don't need touch. "Hey, you don't need to move away. I bet you're touch-starved, huh?" MD-264N doesn't answer. It doesn't know how. "You don't need to… y'know, act all subservient. You can look at me. And you don't have to address me as sir, Rhian will do. Since it's my name. Do you have one?"
"This weapon has been designated MD-264N," answers the weapon automatically, "designed and programmed for urban use by the Ministry of Defence. Its capabilities are–"
"That's your designation, sweetheart, not your name. I guess that means you don't have one then. Would it be alright if I give you one?"
Why are they asking all these questions? Surely they know it can't refuse anyway.
"Yes, s– Rhian."
"Great! So I was thinking of Morgan, if you like it?"
"Yes, Rhian."
"That's good. You can look at me, sweetheart, you don't have to look at the floor. Why won't you look up?"
MD-264N (no, Morgan, it'd better start using the name its new commander wants) shivers. "This weapon is malfunctioning."
"What do you mean?"
Morgan swallows, preparing to give the information that might get it decommissioned. "Its left ankle is not functioning, and there is aberrant moisture leaking from its eyes. And it keeps having aberrant thoughts."
There's a short pause. "So… you're in pain, you're crying and you're probably scared? You're in a strange place with people you've never met, after being shot in the ankle, I'd be surprised if something wasn't wrong, frankly. I'll get Asha to bring you some more painkillers. It's okay to feel like this, sweetheart, it doesn't mean you can't look at me, or that I don't want to see you. Please, Morgan?"
Morgan can't refuse that, and it raises its head, not making eye contact but looking all the same. Rhian's hair is white dipped in red, and they smile at the weapon, mouth dimpling at the corners.
"There you are. Nice to meet you."
They're so soft, their hand warm on its arm, saying things that don't make sense, not for a weapon, but they're so nice. More moisture leaks from the weapon's eyes at the gentleness. Nobody's ever been this gentle with it.
"Hey, it's okay. Do you want a hug?"
A hug? But it– it's never, no-one's ever– it's just a weapon, why would anyone offer? Morgan nods anyway, and Rhian wraps their arm around it, holding it tight and warm. They don't seem bothered about touching it, like its handlers are, and their fingers almost burn through the fabric of the hoodie. It doesn't remember the last time anyone touched it without gloves.
Its eyes leak even more and it finds itself making sounds along with that, sounds that it would surely be shocked for with anyone else. But Rhian just shushes it gently, and it can't help leaning into their touch.
Of all the people it's met, Rhian is by far the most patient, and it can't help the aberrant and likely futile hope that the gentleness lasts.

Tumblr media
Rhian

Tumblr media
Blue
he/she/they
Rebel technician. Former worker in a government-funded lab, ran away and blew it up on the way. Designed and made Rhian's prosthesis. Prone to overworking and losing track of time. Very cautious, perhaps overly so on occasion. Addicted to coffee. Most of his unhealthy coping methods are developed from his seven years at a government-run school for so-called 'geniuses'.
Tumblr media
Asim
he/him
Lost one eye.
Leader of the small rag-tag group of rebels. Misses his family but doesn't want to put them in danger. If he's feeling particularly homesick he'll make traditional Bangladeshi dishes like his mum made.
Tumblr media
Farai
she/they
Sometimes uses mobility aids in the form of crutches. Has wrist and ankle supports
Member of a different group of rebels, one that is much more strict and not really a fan of her. Moves temporarily to Asim's team for a rescue mission and much prefers it there.

i’m up to season 7 on my rewatch of criminal minds and it still pisses me off so bad that everyone just accepted that emily’s alive and well so easily?? like derek mourned her so bad and was obsessed with finding doyle and getting revenge and suddenly he learns that not only did he get lied to by some of the people he trusted the most (hotch & jj) but he also learns that he went through hell and grieved badly for nothing??? and he’s just okay with that and immediately goes back to normal with emily as if she never “died”???? he isn’t mad at hotch????? or jj????? no signs of broken trust? everyone is just pretending it never happened and they gaslight the only person who isn’t immediately accepting of the situation (spencer)???? literally everyone calls him immature and spiteful and stupid for not pretending that his feelings and his trust weren’t badly damaged by the whole skit???? jj even implies that he’s egotistical enough to be angry not at being lied to by people he trusted most, but because he couldn’t “profile” jj & hotch correctly and therefore realize they were lying about emily passing away?????? and he’d been going to her house every single day to cry for TEN ENTIRE WEEKS and she just comforted him knowing he was troubled but still didn’t tell him the truth??????? and then when he confesses that he almost relapsed @ his dilaudid addiction she not only gaslights him about it (“no you didn’t”) but she also admits she wouldn’t even have told him the truth if he’d relapsed?????? and emily also guilt trips him into forgiving both her and jj by giving him that bullshit excuse of “we couldn’t tell anyone even though you’d never have told anyone sorry lol” and compares his grief, his very real and intense mourning of a friend he thought had DIED, a friend he felt like he failed by not saving her, a friend he had BURIED and she gives him that whole “i buried and mourned six friends too” knowing fully it was nowhere near the same fucking thing because those six friends weren’t fucking DEAD for SEVEN MONTHS and everyone just. expects spencer to accept this whole bullshit arc and forgive them immediately????????????????? yeah this is still the worst storyline of criminal minds!

i finally got around to reading "Rappaccini's Daughter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne and now i have Dahlia Thoughts™
Rappaccini's Daughter, according to the Ace Attorney wiki, is where the inspiration for Dahlia's last name comes from. I read it with my Fandom Goggles on, and not to get too english class here, but....we're about to get pretty english class
For those of you who haven't read it, it's a gothic short story abt a medical researcher whose experiments with poisonous plants result in his own daughter, Beatrice, becoming poisonous. The man who falls in love with her slowly learns the truth about her nature and struggles to cope with it.
"Am I awake? Have I my senses?" said he to himself. "What is this being? Beautiful shall I call her, or inexpressibly terrible?"
A large portion of our MC's internal narration heavily revolves around the idea of one's appearance vs their nature. He refers to the garden as "an Eden of poisonous flowers". When he shuns Beatrice for what she is, she tells him that even though her exterior is poisonous, her soul is pure.
This is a direct contrast to Dahlia, who Phoenix refers to multiple times as an "angel". And, needless to say, her soul is quite the opposite.
But the one thing the story makes clear about Beatrice is that she is, at the end of the day, a victim of her circumstances - in the same way that Dahlia arguably is as well. The MC's realization of the truth comes like this: he realizes that because Beatrice has been raised in the presence of poison, she has become poisonous herself -> i feel like I don't even need to relate this back to Dahlia at this point, it kind of slaps you in the face.
Beatrice confronts her father, too, and asks why he inflicted this miserable curse on her; but he is adamant that he hasn't done anything wrong.
"Wouldst thou, then, have preferred the condition of a weak woman, exposed to all evil and capable of none?"
He claims it's anything but misery to be as terrible as you are beautiful, to have the power and strength against which no enemy can prevail -> does that not give you big Morgan vibes
At the end, she takes an antidote given to her, believing that it will cure her of her poison - but because she's been so inextricably tied w the poison, there's no curing her anymore.
To Beatrice,--so radically had her earthly part been wrought upon by Rappaccini's skill,--as poison had been life, so the powerful antidote was death
The comparisons to Dahlia are interesting, I think, in that the 'poison' can be used as a metaphor for literally anything else. If we stick with the whole 'you can't escape from your nature and whatever you are raised in the presence of is something you can't separate from yourself anymore', then in a way Dahlia is the exact opposite of Beatrice. One actively fights against and rejects her nature, isolating herself from the entire world, while the other accepts it wholeheartedly. It also can be used to draw further comparisons between Beatrice's father and Morgan: one purposefully molded his daughter to fit his desired image, while the other actively was not involved, but still led to the same end result.
Beatrice's tragedy is that she's aware of her poisonous nature and hates it. She tells Giovanni, her love interest, "I am poisonous! I am deadly! I am like the fatal basilisk that slays with a glance!" She's a prisoner of her father's making, a living weapon who longs for normalcy. Dahlia, on the other hand, embraces her poisonous nature. She uses her charm like a weapon, manipulating everyone around her. There's no longing for normalcy with her; she revels in the chaos she creates.
"Thou hast filled my veins with poison! Thou hast made me as hateful, as ugly, as loathsome and deadly a creature as thyself--a world's wonder of hideous monstrosity!"
And, unwillingly, Beatrice ends up passing on her poisonous nature to Giovanni - and now he's forced to live with this curse. What, then, does that say about Phoenix...?

Born on this day: happy 85th birthday to revered sexploitation icon (variously referred to as “The Zsa Zsa Gabor of Burlesk” and “the Female Liberace of Burlesque”), the mega-buxom Chesty Morgan (née Lilian Wilczkowski, 15 October 1937). Morgan’s cult cinema infamy is assured from her starring roles in two Doris Wishman b-movies capitalizing on her legendary 73-24-36 measurements: Deadly Weapons (1974) and Double Agent 73 (1974). (She was to have featured in Federico Fellini’s Casanova (1976) – the Italian maestro raved that she was “the woman of all women, an exquisite creature” - but her scenes got deleted! Pray that footage still exists in a vault and is eventually restored in a director’s cut DVD!). In her prime, Morgan pulled $3,500 a week (over $20,000 in today’s money) on the striptease circuit. Apparently elderly present-day Morgan is a hardcore Trump supporter – but let’s not dwell on that! If you’re curious about Chesty Morgan’s tempestuous life and times, check out the in-depth two-piece investigation by the essential Rialto Report, the site devoted to the golden age of pornography.
