With November we have all of the winners finally in for the major Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association awards. This was a big year for all as the association marked its 45th year. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners and nominees, and a big round of applause to all of the chairs who worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth process:

Elgin Awards Now in its tenth year, the first place Elgin Award winner for Book of the Year is Some Disassembly Required by David C. Kopaska-Merkel (Diminuendo Press, 2022). Second place went to The Saint of Witches by Avra Margariti (Weasel Press, 2022), while third place was a tie between  Elegies of Rotted Stars by Tiffany Morris (Nictitating Books, 2022) and Not a Princess, But (Yes) There Was a Pea & Other Tales to Foment Revolution by Rebecca Buchanan (Jackanapes Press, 2022),  The Elgin Award winner for Chapbook of the Year is The Last Robot and Other Science Fiction Poems by Jane Yolen (Shoreline of Infinity, 2021). The second place chapbook was Spacers Snarled in the Hair of Comets by Bruce Boston (Mind’s Eye Publishing, 2022).  The third place went to Cajuns in Space by Denise Dumars (self-published, 2022).

Morgan L Ventura served as the 2023 Chair of the Elgin Awards. 78 members voted on the selections. 58 books had been nominated and 18 chapbooks had been nominated.

Rhysling Awards For the Rhysling awards, in the Long Poem category, Colleen Anderson’s “Machine (r)Evolution” from Radon Journal 2 received first place. In the Short Poem category there was a tie between Jennifer Crow’s “Harold and the Blood-Red Crayon” from Star*Line 45.1 and Terese Mason Pierre’s “In Stock Images of the Future, Everything is White” from Uncanny 46.  The second place award in the Long Poem category went to Rebecca Buchanan’s “The Bone Tree” from Not A Princess, but (Yes) There was a Pea, and Other Fairy Tales to Foment Revolution (Jackanapes Press) and the second place in the Short Poem category went to Sarah Grey’s “Bitch Moon” from Nightmare Magazine 118. The 2023 third place Long Poem was  Akua Lezli Hope’s “Igbo Landing II” which first appeared in Black Fire—This Time, ed. Kim McMillon (Aquarius Press). The third place award for Short Poem was a tie between Amelia Gorman’s “The Gargoyle Watches the Rains End” from The Gargoylicon: Imaginings and Images of the Gargoyle in Literature and Art ed. Frank Coffman (Mind’s Eye Publications) and Lisa Timpf’s “First Contact” from Eye to the Telescope 44. Rhysling honorable mentions in the Short Poem category included “Field Notes from the Anthropocene” by Priya Chand Nightmare Magazine 116,  “Near the end, your mother tells you she’s been seeing someone” by Shannon Connor Winward, from the SFPA Poetry Contest, and “Dinner Plans with Baba Yaga” by Stephanie M. Wytovich from Into the Forest: Tales of the Baba Yaga. In the Long Poem category, honorable mentions were given to “Herbaceous Citadel” by Avra Margariti in The Fairy Tale Magazine January 4,  “Living in Rubble” by Gerri Leen from Eccentric Orbits 3, and “The Thing About Stars” by Avra Magariti from The Saint of Witches (Weasel Press).

Maxwell I. Gold was this year’s Rhysling chair. 102 short poems were nominated, and 70 long poems were nominated from across 94 publications and collections. 114 members voted.

Dwarf Stars The 2023 Dwarf Stars were tied for first place with “Believe the Graves” by Rasha Abdulhadi from The Deadlands 16 and “In Perpetuity” by Bruce Boston in Analog, July/August 2022. The second place award went to “Excerpt from a Proposal for the New City” by Alyssa Lo from Strange Horizons, 11/14. The third place was tied between “As Slow as Starlight” by Kim Whysall-Hammond in Frozen Wavelets 7, “Surviving” by Sumiko Saulson in The Rat King: A Book of Dark Poetry (Dooky Zines), and  “Trichotillomania” by Warsan Shire in Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head (Random House). This year’s chairs were David C. Kopaska Merkel and Miguel O. Mitchell, PhD. This year 120 members reviewed 105 poems across 54 venues.

SFPA Poetry Contest Judge Michael Arnzen selected the winners of this year’s SFPA Poetry Contest. Prizes were offered in three divisions: Dwarf (≤10 lines), Short, and Long (50+ lines). Contest chair R. Thursday received 439 entries (114 dwarf-length, 253 short, and 72 long poems) from around the world.

NJPW Match Card Set for June 17 + Match Predictions for NOAH's Green Journey in Nagoya 2023

Earlier today, NJPW announced match cards for their televised events in Chiba (for June 10th and 18th) and Hachioji (for June 17th). Down below is the official match card for their June 17th which is part of their "New Japan Road: Road to Strong" tour which starts in Chiba on June 10th. There will be a total of 8 matches on the card 4 of them are pictured down below:

But before that, we will have Pro Wrestling NOAH's "Green Journey in Nagoya 2023" which will air on ABEMA and Wrestle Universe at 5 PM Local Time/4 AM Eastern/3 AM Central/1 AM Pacific on the same day as "New Japan Road" in Hachioji in which right now I will give you my full match predictions for the NOAH event as promised when the match card was officially announced last week.

Opening Match Prediction: I can understand that Hiroki wants to prove himself but by leaving Kongo, he has left a big hole. Already knowing he'll lose to Kenoh, losing to Hajime Ohara is not a option but...with the way he's been going, can't see him beating Ohara. Hajime Ohara will win the opening match.

Match #2 Prediction: This match is very intriguing but if I'm to pick a side then I'm going with the team of Mohammed Yone, Super Crazy, and Alejandro for the win.

Match #3 Prediction: Apparently Hideaki Suzuki is not happy about this match and based on how he is. I'm expecting this singles bout against Shuhei Taniguchi to be a brawl. Hideaki Suzuki will dominate and win in easy fashion.

Match #4 Prediction: When this match was originally announced, I thought that this would be used to determine Hijo del Dr. Wagner's next challenger for the GHC National Championship. But with Kaito Kiyomiya's participation in the G1 announced, this is his chance to show his 7 block opponents (which will be announced on June 10th) what he's made of. I still see Kiyomiya winning and at the same time make a statement as G1 Climax 33 looms for him.

Match #5 Prediction: This is no typo everyone, Naomichi Marufuji is actually teaming up with Eita against Daiki Inaba and Atsushi Kotoge in which I see the crumbling of Kotoge continue. Eita and Marufuji with the surprise victory.

Match #6 Prediction: Welcome back Jack Morris, we missed you. GLG vs. Stinger and Sean Legacy is sure going to be something. My prediction on this match will be very interesting for I have Stinger and Legacy continuing that momentum they've been having since May 4th in Ryogoku. Stinger and Sean Legacy with the win.

Match #7 Prediction: A rematch from May 14th and a preview match for June 22nd all in one match. AXIZ returned on May 14th in a losing effort as Go Shiozaki was pinned by Kenoh in the main event. Since that loss, AXIZ has won their next two matches and it is expected by the time they get to Nagoya they will be 4-1 since reuniting. My prediction is that AXIZ will get the win here but it will be interesting to see if this match will be for the AJPW World Tag Team Championship by then. Also, note...Go Shiozaki has never defeated Kenoh in singles competition. A win here in Nagoya could boost his confidence to get that first win over the Kongo leader in Korakuen Hall five days later.

Match #8 Prediction: Very hard match to predict here but one thing is clear, Dante Leon will do whatever it takes to win back the GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship and though I can see him winning somehow I don't. HAYATA will retain but how though remains to be seen.

Semi-main Event Match Prediction: My expectation here is that whoever wins between Kongo and AXIZ two matches earlier will be the next challenger team for the GHC Tag Team Championships. This match is hard to predict because when you have Saxon Huxley in the ring, he's out of control. He's the true definition of being the savage David Finlay wants in his Bullet Club. Anyway, this match...I'm predicting as of right now new tag team champions with AXIZ coming out as the next challenger team. However, should the champion team retain, this could be the chance for Go to exact some revenge because it was Timothy Thatcher that put him on the shelf in Osaka back in September. Nonetheless...here I see new champions but always expect the unexpected when it comes to Saxon Huxley.

Main Event Prediction: There's a saying, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. My prediction here is a very intriguing one for I see Jake Lee retaining despite being dominated by the challenger Takashi Sugiura throughout most of the tour. Jake Lee's toughest challenge will result in his toughest victory and should he emerge victorious be interesting to see who' will be next.

So, those are my predictions for Pro Wrestling NOAH's "Green Journey in Nagoya 2023". Sorry but no predictions for "New Japan Road". The next NJPW event that I'll do predictions on will be their "Forbidden Door" event at the end of June and their two Independence Day Events during the 4th of July 2023.

"New Japan Road: Road to Strong" in Hachioji airs on NJPW World this Saturday at 5:00 AM Eastern while "Green Journey in Nagoya 2023" airs the same date at 4:00 AM Eastern on ABEMA for Japanese Commentary and Wrestle Universe for English commentary.

Summer Struggle in Osaka 2021 Night 1 - 7/22/2021: Ibushi Misses Today, Next Two Nights, Tokyo Dome Main Event In Doubt; Lance Archer Defeats Jon Moxley For IWGP US Title In AEW 7/21/2021; Two Matches Added to Resurgence Card, Ex-Aiden English Joining Commentary For Show

The tour resumed today, with the first night of Summer Struggle in Osaka. Earlier this week it was announced Kota Ibushi would be missing today, tomorrow and Saturday's shows, in the run-up for Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome. NJPW states that Ibushi has been diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia, and has tested negative for COVID-19; they go on to say that this is unrelated to the COVID-19 vaccine, so that is not the reason why he has taken ill after all. Shortly before the pandemic, Ibushi had taken ill as well, although at the time it was reported he'd had a Mallory-Weiss tear in his esophagus. Basically Ibushi seems to have some bad luck with illnesses lately. NJPW further states that his status will be determined after Summer Struggle in Nagoya on Saturday, which, hope they have a credible Plan B for the main event of Wrestle Grand Slam if Ibushi is not able to wrestle that day. In the meantime, Tomoaki Honma will be filling Ibushi's spot in those matches the next few days. We wish Ibushi a good recovery from his illness.

Taichi gets a(nother) singles win over Naito, whilst SANADA and ZSJ get a rare double-pin draw result. The pair switch sparring partners tomorrow in that show's feature matches.

Cobb pins Goto, meaning even if Cobb fails to beat Okada on Sunday (likely), we could see the United Empire of O-Khan/Cobb/Henare (once he returns) challenge for the 6-man titles. It’s what I’d do. Ishii attacked both EVIL and Dick Togo once more post-match.

The IWGP US Heavyweight title has changed hands for the first time since Wrestle Kingdon 14 Night 1 on 1/4/2020, and it is back with the previous holder. Lance Archer defeated champion Jon Moxley in their rematch Texas Deathmatch in the main event of last night's special Fyter Fest 2021 edition of AEW Dynamite, after chokeslamming Mox through two tables (in a callback spot to the first match) with barbed wire boards on top of them. Mox was unable to answer a 10-count, therefore by the stipulation of the match, Archer was the winner at 13:24 (Moxley fails his 6th defense; Archer is the 8th champion). Forks were used in this match, Abdullah-stylee. It got a little bloody! This is the first time the title has changed hands in another company, despite previous title matches also held in Ring of Honor in the past. Bullet Club's Hikuleo was shown in the crowd throughout the episode, and was announced to be challenging the winner of this match next week at AEW's special Fight For The Fallen episode from Charlotte, NC. Post-main, Hikuleo climbed into the ring to stare down Archer, and let me tell you, Hikuleo has a good 3 inches on Archer, which is not an easy feat. I wouldn't read anything into Moxley losing the title as far as his involvement with NJPW at the moment, any more than you can say Jay White is jumping to Impact based on Saturday's PPV ending. He is still part of advertising for NJPW Strong, and is shown on the posters for NJPW Resurgence and the Fighting Spirit Unleashed TV tapings in August. The buzz is high for a reunion of Mox and Shota Umino, given that Shooter has returned to active wrestling now as well. If nothing else, this frees up Mox for the reunion at Resurgence. In any event, congratulations to Archer, now a 2-time holder of this title; since there aren't enough titles to go around in AEW, with both Kenny Omega and Miro having very dominant runs with their respective titles, this is a good reward for Archer. Next week's match v. Hikuleo should be interesting.

Speaking of Resurgence, NJoA has announced two additional matches to the card. LA Dojo Young Lion Alex Coughlin and graduate Karl Fredericks will open the show with a singles encounter, part of Coughlin’s Challenge Series. Then, a trios match has been booked that will see NJPW Strong regulars Fred Rosser, Rocky Romero & Wheeler Yuta (someone else who impressed on AEW TV last night) taking on TJP, Clark Connors and Ren Narita. 

NJoA also announced the addition of one Matt Morris to the commentary team for this event, joining Strong regulars Kevin Kelly and Alex Koslov. Morris used to be Aiden English in WWE. Hope this works out for him.

The Olympics officially start tomorrow... well, maybe even today by the time I post this in JST. Some events have already started. Many scandals and controversies have already cropped up. I can't even keep up anymore. By and large, the people of Tokyo, and Japan, do not want this, and it's going on anyway. There will be consequences, be it with a resurgence in COVID-19 cases, or politically, with a general election coming. Wrestling will be affected by this, rest assured, and it will most likely not be anything good. I just hope Japan gets through this in, mostly, one piece. The second night of Summer Struggle in Osaka is tomorrow, which will be live on NJPWWorld.

APPLE BLOSSOM LUCY

April 30, 1964

If it were not for the scourge of Corona Virus, this week would have been the start of the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival and Parade in Winchester, Virginia. The event began in 1929 and was only previously  cancelled during World War II. The event features an Apple Blossom Queen (aka Queen Shenandoah), a parade with a Grand Marshal, and celebrity appearances. 

In 1964, TV legend Lucille Ball, served as the Festival’s Grand Marshal. The Queen of Comedy was joined by another famous Lucy - Luci Baines Johnson, who was Queen Shenandoah. 

Luci Baines Johnson (born July 2, 1947) is the younger daughter of U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife, Lady Lady Bird Johnson. Her father was president from November 22, 1963 (President Kennedy’s assassination) to January 20, 1969. Her first name was originally spelled "Lucy" just like Lucille Ball’s nickname, but in her teens she changed the spelling. As her parents both had the initials LBJ, they named their two daughters so that they would have these initials as well.

A brochure for the 1964 event shows both Luci and Lucille on the cover. 

A more generic tourist guide was also available for visitors. 

A program book was available for fifty cents. 

Naturally, the ‘two Lucy’ event gathered a good deal of press, as with this brief column in Variety. 

The Post Office even commemorated the Festival with special envelopes and postmarks. The top left envelope is from the 1964 event and shows the Johnson family home. 

If Lucille Ball needed to be convinced to be Grand Marshal, she just had to ask some of her famous friends, who also went to Winchester at Festival Time.

Three days before Lucy’s appearances at the Apple Festival, “Lucy Enters A Baking Contest” (TLS S2;E28) was aired for the first time. The episode depicts Lucy making pies, although they were cream pies, not apple! 

For the 75th Anniversary Festival in 2002, Lucy’s granddaughter, Katharine Desiree Luckinbill, served as Queen Shenandoah. Lucille Ball’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz and Lucie’s husband Larry Luckinbill, accompanied their daughter Katharine to the event and also rode in the parade. 

AN APPLE A DAY...

Although audiences never knew it, apple sauce was the main ingredient in the pies dumped on William Holden in “Hollywood at Last!” (ILL S4;E16) and apple pectin was the secret ingredient in Vitameatavegamin in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30). 

“Lucy’s Notebook” - a publication from the mid-1950s - includes a recipe for Apple Pie de Luxe!  

She was also known for her Sweet Apple John - recipe above!

Speaking of Apple John, in “Lucy Goes to Art Class” (TLS S2;E15), Viv bakes an apple pie for John, a handsome new bachelor she met at art class. 

In the same episode, Lucy ‘meets cute’ with John when the contents of her purse spill out on the floor and he helps pick them up - including an apple!

In “Lucy Buys a Boat” (TLS S1;E30), Lucy snacks on an apple while Viv is out cold from too many sea sickness pills! 

In “Lucy Learns To Drive” (ILL S4;E12) Lucy tries to coax a catatonic Fred out of his daze by tempting him with a piece of her apple pie! 

In “Lucy and Chuck Connors Have a Surprise Slumber Party” (HL S6;E13) Connors decides to spend the night in the Carter house. His director (Ryan MacDonald) informs him there’s plenty of apple pie in the fridge! 

Lucy Ricardo owned an apple cookie jar! Lucy’s Hull Apple Cookie Jar, was often seen in the Ricardo kitchen. Hull Pottery was quite popular in the 1950’s.

In early episodes of “I Love Lucy” apples (and other fruits) were readily available in the Ricardo living room! 

Int “The Kleptomaniac” (ILL S1;E27) while Lucy is stealing Fred’s cuckoo clock for her club bazaar, she grabs an apple from the sideboard as a snack!  

A ravenous Lucy takes a bite out of juicy looking apple - only to discover that it is made of wax - in "Lucy’s Schedule” (ILL S1;E33). 

In “Lucy Helps the Countess” (TLS S4;E8), Lucy Carmichael, the Countess, and Mr. Mooney, accidentally get locked in a vacant high rise apartment for the weekend!  The only food they have is one solitary apple! 

In “Dirty Gertie” (HL S5;E10), Lucy Carter goes downtown to bring a basket of surplus apples to her hairdresser, and is mistaken for an impoverished “Apple Annie” by some local mobsters. 

In “Lucy in London” (1966), after Anthony Newley’s medley, there is a quick shot of Lucy as an Eliza Doolittle-type figure in the balcony of a theatre munching an apple!  Technically, London theatres were known for their orange sellers, but why quibble?

In “Lucy Becomes a Reporter” (TLS S1;E17), Viv’s old flame Argyle (John Vivyan) says she was known in high school was as ‘Truckie’ because of her dance moves while doing “The Big Apple.” In “Love Among the Two By Fours” (LWL S1;E3). Lucy Barker and her old flame Ben (Peter Graves) say they first met doing the same dance!

In a silent movie sketch in “Lucy and Mickey Rooney” (TLS S4;E18) The Kid (Rooney) swipes an apple from a fruit stall, but The Tramp (Lucy) stops him. 

He was only emulating the Keystone Cop!  

At the start of “Lucy the Gun Moll” (TLS S4;E25), Lucy Carmichael wants Mr. Mooney to install an apple vending machine for the employees at the bank.  Although vending machines offering fresh fruit are rare in today’s world, the Fruit-O-Matic Company started to manufacture such machines around 1950.

In “World’s Greatest Grandma” (LWL; unaired) Lucy Barker considers singing “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me)” for a talent show - except (as usual) she can’t sing! 

In “Lucy and the Andrews Sisters” (HL S2;E6), Lucy Carter and daughter Kim join Patty Andrews in a medley that contains the song. It was originally sung by the Andrews Sisters in the 1942 film Private Buckaroo.
