Like all Lin Kuei, Madam Bo trained since childhood to better serve the clan.

Although the Lin Kuei are an ancient warrior clan with the duty of defending Earthrealm, Madam Bo, as a former Lin Kuei and a former warrior leader, traveled to many realms and among them OutWorld on missions when she was part of the clan.

On one of her missions, Madam Bo met a citizen of OutWorld, who at first she believed was plotting against Earthrealm, but turned out to be an ally who over time ended up becoming something more.

Madam Bo's loyalty to the Lin Kuei made her decide to end her relationship with the OutWorlder, due to her duty lie in Earthrealm and that of her suitor in OutWorld.

After some time alone, Bo decided to give a chance to her childhood friend, an master armorer, who ended up becoming her partner and the father of her only daughter.

Madam Bo has been training Kung Lao and Raiden since childhood.

She was there when Kung Lao spoke his first words. And according to her, ever since he was born he has been making excuses for not doing something he should just because he doesn't want to.

She considers Kung Lao and Raiden as her sons. Raiden is her favorite student and she would like to have more like him, one Kung Lao is enough.

Before the attack on Kuai Liang and Harumi's wedding, Kung Lao had never met Sektor. The only skilled female fighters in Earthrealm that he knew were Madam Bo and Raiden's sister. For him and Raiden, finding out that Madam Bo had a daughter and that she was so different from her mother was a shock.

Madam Bo's favorite pastime is cooking. Opening a restaurant after leaving the Lin Kuei was her first idea.

Madam Bo's special tea is strong enough to cause hallucinations.

Kung Lao's stubbornness and soft body tests Madam Bo's patience. Sometimes she can't help but hit him on the head with her big spoon.

Although the Lin Kuei's act as thugs threatening Madam Bo and attacking her restaurant was merely a test for Kung Lao and Raiden and designed by Madam Bo herself, Sektor was not happy to learn that her elderly mother agreed to Smoke throwing her off the balcony, and even less to learn that Kung Lao had injured Bi-Han.

Sektor doesn't get along with Smoke and Scorpion now. But she used to get along with both of them as much as Bi-Han did, except that in any dispute between them, she would take Bi-Han's side.

Sektor loves her mother, but as a true daddy's girl, she has never hidden her favoritism for her father since she was little, and before she started following Bi-Han, the man she followed everywhere was her father. And her father, in turn, always gave her everything she wanted and never denied her anything. Even though she spends less time with her father now due to her responsibilities as second-in-command of the Lin Kuei, her father is still her best friend and confidant.

Although only for passing by, due to her duties as a warrior leader and to her family, as well as for her mission to train Kung Lao and Raiden naturally create a distance between her and the Grandmaster's family, Madam Bo has known Bi-Han and his brothers since childhood.

Madam Bo didn't disapprove of her daughter's relationship with Bi-Han at first, but she does now.

Sektor's actions embarrass Madam Bo.

Madam Bo was very surprised to hear about what Bi-Han has done, especially because in her presence, he was always on his best behavior.

Sektor and her mother disagree on many things except when it comes to their fighting skills. Sektor admires her mother's fighting skills and has become a great warrior to honor her mother's legacy in the Lin Kuei. Madam Bo knows how skilled her daughter is and how powerful she has become.

Training Raiden's sister has made her think more of Sektor than usual. Even though the two have little in common and very different personalities.

Madam Bo didn't allow Kung Lao to join Tomas and Kuai Liang in Raiden's sister's test because she knew it would distract the girl. She knows how sad the young woman was that Kung Lao hasn't written to her in a long time.

Madam Bo enjoyed getting to know Tomas and Kuai Liang better when Tomas finally fulfilled his wish to visit her restaurant for a meal instead of a fight.

Being away from her family to train future Shaolin monks and champions of Earthrealm wasn't a life she chose, but she is certainly honored to have received this mission from Lord Liu Kang.

Jade will gossip with you. She takes her job extremely seriously and tends to distance herself from unprofessional things, so even the way she interacts in casual settings can feel uptight. Though she claims she has no vested interest in gossip, she always seems to know the juiciest things. Being in touch with court intrigue is just another duty of protecting Kitana, so she always has an ear to the floor. Technically, since they're palace secrets, telling them to an outsider is unthinkable and borderline treasonous... But if you press her, it's rather easy. She has her own opinions, even if she pretends to be above it all, so once you break the dam, you'll get the entire flood. Being able to confide in someone without courtly pretences is a treat to her, so she actually looks forward to you asking her about it.

Jax won't smoke around you if you aren't a smoker. He doesn't quit smoking, but the only time you will see his lighter is during camping trips. His clothes still smell of smoke, but if you spend the entire day with him, you're more likely to learn what kind of laundry detergent he uses. He doesn't want you to be stuck inhaling his secondhand smoke because he knows that it is objectively bad for people, so even if you say it's alright, he will probably abstain. If you are a smoker, he may have casual banter with you over your respective brand picks. Still, he won't knock it until he tries it, so you may end up swapping cigs one day. Though it's his biggest vice, he will unquestionably kick it if you ask him to. And if you're both smokers, he will try to keep both of you accountable and responsible with intake.

Shang Tsung will never treat you like a glass doll, but he will micromanage your health. Unless he takes care of things with his own hands, he won't feel satisfied that everything is in order. In some ways, it's a blessing. But depending on your tolerance for unconventional treatment, it can be a bit of a curse. The good news is that you could be sliced down the middle and thrown into a pool of acid and still live to see the next day. The bad news is that, if he cannot prevent your death, he will rouse you from your eternal slumber. The words "favourite person" may not seem to mean much from him, but the key term is "person," as opposed to "subject" or "pawn." A person may be physically cloned, but Shang Tsung knows better than anybody that clones are not the same person.

It is hard for her to explain why she takes your blood when she doesn't really need it for anything, but just be assured that she could distinguish your blood from anybody else's. Even if yours was a single drop in a bloody ocean. That attachment is, in its own morbid way, the red string that she's tied between the both of you.

Tanya will just lie on your behalf. You don't want to go to a meeting? You can't because your ceiling caved and you had to stay home all day to deal with the issue. Someone is giving you unwanted attention? Better luck next time because Tanya will make up a list of reasons about why that person shouldn't try to approach you anymore long enough to be a legal document. It would be nice if she let you know ahead of time, but she will set a wedge between you and your petty inconveniences as soon as she hears about them. You can fight your own battles, but if she doesn't think it's worth your time, she will swiftly sweep and smother them under a rug. The abusive Bi-Han headcanon is definitely causing a lot of suffering for Bi-Han fans, especially since it always there in fanon even in the prior timeline and it's now booming thanks to mk1.

I never saw prior timeline Bi-Han as abusive, mainly because Kuai never mentions this and neither does Smoke. The most charitable interpretation of this that I've seen in stories is that Bi-Han is under some terribly misguided impression he is toughening up Kuai and that he is 'protecting him' and keeping him alive. Which is probably the only interpretation that makes even a hint of sense given I don't think a young Bi-Han would be kicking Kuai down the stairs for the lolz.

Even then, that's not exactly the ideal view of their relationship. I always saw Bi-Han as cold, even to his brother, thought this mainly because of Lin Kuei teachings fucking up his ability to express himself in a caring manner and not out of malice. I always imagined there's this small pocket of love Bi-Han had for Kuai in that cold heart of his but he doesn't show it outwardly because 'Love is a weakness,' nonsense the Grandmaster was probably slamming full force on the clan.

That’s the charm of fandom, either our fav characters are popular and widely liked, or hated even for things they haven’t officially done. And with lore so old like Mortal Kombat, the positive and negative personal headcanons and interpretations creep into perception of characters, their canon personalities and reasoning one way or another. That is unavoidable and the less official source material is provided, the more fans fill the gap in their own way. Sometimes that leads to perpetuating some unkind opinions which understandably is upsetting if the character, like Bi-Han, is accused of things not hinted at by the tie-in material in the first place (i.e. abusing Kuai Liang in the childhood).

However I feel like in Bi-Han’s case, the problem lies only halfway in limited details about his and Kuai Liang’s past and brotherhood before elder Sub-Zero was turned into Wraith and twisted by dark magic. For me, the negative perception is connected to his naturally cold, abrasive behavior. I suspect if Bi-Han was a more emotionally driven character, the way Hanzo is, many fans would be more likely to think he was just sadly misled by Lin Kuei pathological doctrines if not outright the tragic hero. Bi-Han however is not that emotional kind of person, he has never been. Forgive me the metaphor, but I feel that the fan treatment of Bi-Han is similar to how people, who have never had a cat, perceive those animals and how frustrated it must be when they expect cats to behave like dogs but won’t get the desired results. It is not that the elder Sub-Zero or cats are evil by nature, they just communicate and behave in a very specific way. If people mistake it for them being mean, uncaring, even for being unable to love only because they expected - demanded - a different set of behavior that would fit their narrowed idea of normalcy, then they are bound to be disappointed one way or another. But that is not fault of fictional characters (and definitely not cats’ either).

That said, I too think Kuai Liang always had a special place in Bi-Han’s life and was no less important than Bi-Han was for him, and that Lin Kuei upbringing complicated expressing those emotions, however I don’t see a point of getting worked over different opinions of strangers. Is it hard sometimes to be a fan of characters like the elder Sub-Zero that feel widely mistreated by fandom over things there is no evidence he did in canon? Sure, but each person is entitled to their own opinion. Fandom is like that sometimes and in my book, usually the best solution is sticking to things that make you happy and if needed, to ignore negative things outside of your control. I know it is not easy, but sometimes it is good to agree to disagree and move on to a comfortable niche of personal headcanons.

It works for me most of time - and if I feel enough spiteful toward fandom at large, I will just create my own Bi-Han positive fanwork to balance things out 😈

Girl, relying on developers to go on a path you KNOW there's so much potential for is probably the most FRUSTRATING thing you can do.

Sometimes, you will see this character, and the potential they hold will literally blow your mind and fill you up with the most wild ideas, and then the developers will grab this character and go:

(Yes, I do despise the Canon Scorpion!Harumi Ending cause they basically trapped this Harumi with this guy who has the face of her deceased husband but is also the guy who has killed a variant of her just because she was already in love with other man, and this Harumi here is f*cked cause if she do so much as dare to fall in love with someone else this brainless troglodyte will attack her, and god knows how painful it will be for her to see the face of the man she once loved charge against her just because she dared to love and be loved🙃)

So yeah, I understand your frustration, it's totally justified, and I'm 100% with you!

But how do we deal with this frustration?

Girl, we crack our knuckles and put ourselves to work, cause these silly may not give us a good story to save their lives, but they do give us characters!

If you see the potential in a character, you adopt them and you give them everything they deserve!

You pour your heart out, brainstorm and geekout! You go as WILD as you like and you have fun!

Get one of your fave girls and make her main lead!

Get her a girlfriend! Or even two girlfriends!

Make her be feared, loved, cherished! Make her friends with everybody! Give her a power up!

I have massive Bi-Han brainrot and wanted to give a shout out to @yanderestarangel for their excellent Bi-Han and Lin Kuei in general content they have been blessing us with lately. I wanna give another shout out to all the other fantastic writers and artists in the MK Kommunity there are way too many to name or tag but you all are killing it and I thank you so much for your contributions! I’m also giving myself a shout out because I have not been in a good headspace lately but I have continued to write and produce some pretty hot stuffy lately so good job Sol!
