Dark Academia Hair pt. 2
DA hair inspiration, part the second, in which we discuss short styles, ranging from bobs all the way to close-cropped masculine cuts.
Curly Bob
A classic with many different incarnations, a curly bob can easily be tweaked to channel whatever aesthetic you could imagine, from the horizontal riots of Polaire and Colette, to big curly mops of the 20s, to the retro glamorous looks of the 80s and 90s and beyond.

Sleek Straight Bob
One of the quintessential DA looks to me is a simple straight bob, a style suitable for ingenue school girl to the sharp femme fatale. It’s fairly straightforward and low maintenance, and easily pushed up or down the edgy scale by simple tweaks in cut and shape. Best of all it’ll still look stylish whether it’s ironed within an inch of its life, loose and windblown, or in disarray as you stagger drunkenly out of a hedge after a night of debauchery.

Disheveled Curls
I’ve included more photos for this one just because there’s so much you can do with this look, from Renaissance angel or fashionable urchin to Greek statue or broke bohemian, and it works for pretty much any length, cut, or texture of curl. For best results messily comb through with your fingers a few times and walk through a strong wind to get that recklessly tousled look.

Curtain Cut
Currently making a comeback on a wave of 90s nostalgia, this style has a lot of historic presence, going back as far as the Victorian era. Its wavy, windswept, full bodied version screams DA, perfect for evoking the that vaguely bohemian Oxbridge student overwhelmed with ennui and romantic yearning look.

“Dandy Disaster”
I don’t know if this style has a real name, since pretty much my only exposure to it consists of British TV productions of my childhood, which, while set in the teens, 20s, and 30s, were all shot through an unmistakable 70s and 80s lens, creating this seeming Frankenstein’s monster of a hairstyle. It’s obviously a tumble, but also clearly a purposeful one, with the foppish drama and size of Joe Keery’s hair on Stranger Things, a texture and body that would need a serious date with curlers or the springiest of Scots-Irish hair follicles to support, and a lack of concern about taste or hubris. Tracking down visuals were difficult, but anyone with a similar basing in vintage Brit television will know what I’m trying to conjure up.

Loose Teddy Boy
I would honestly suggest Teddy Boys and Teddy Girls as a wonderful inspiration for DA style, mixing youthful irreverence with (then) modern touches and Edwardian stylings. Hair wise they helped pioneer the ducktail and pompadours, often taking them to extravagant levels; but softer, loosely curled versions were worn too, and the slightly tumbled style and vintage feel are perfect with any DA outfit.
Tumblr media
Eton Crop
The shortest and most severe manifestation of the 20s bob; a women’s style, it was named for the short cuts of British schoolboys, and strongly resembled men’s styles of the time. Sometimes plain, sometimes carefully waved and coiled, it was a favorite of lesbians, bright young things, and Josephine Baker, who immortalized it. The ultimate in androgynous aesthete vibes.
Tumblr media
“The Tommy Shelby”
Brought to the fore by it’s starring role in Peaky Blinders, the severe crops of the 20s and early 30s were defined by short sides (frequently buzzcut length) and a long top, usually brushed dramatically back from the face, parted sharply down the middle, or slicked down and pomaded to a patent shine.

So it’s a bit of a fun fact that the year 1899 was the Year of the Pig in the Chinese Zodiac (I see what you did there, AMFP).
And because my insanity demands it, I decided to use the Chinese Zodiac to look up the dates I had ascribed to Layers of Fear.
I about lost it.
Okay, so remember how I chose 1917 as the year the Painter and his Wife got married, as it made the most sense timeline-wise (June 9th on a Saturday, and taking place after his military career in WWI, but not too far ahead in the future as the game has a very much Edwardian/Victorian feel to it). Based on that proposed timeline, the year that everything went to Hell and the Wife died would be in 1924.
1924 was the Year of the Rat.
Another fun fact? I always saw the Painter as being in his late 30′s around the time of the main game, and going with the timeline I made, I always imagined the game takes place in 1927-28. This places his birth year around the time period of 1888-1890.
1888 was also the Year of the Rat.
