Have you ever been doing something for so long that you can't remember what your entry point for that activity was anymore?

Putting together this master fic rec list of mine has had me digging deep into old bookmarks from around 2007 and it got me wondering what exactly got me into reading fanfiction in the first place.

And for the life of me, I can't remember! I do remember the first fandom I read fanfic for was Harry Potter and it wasn't until AFTER Deathly Hallow came out. But I honestly can't remember what it was that made me want to seek it out. There are two possibilities: 1) I was listening to an episode of PotterCast or MuggleCast* and they talked about fanfiction and I decided to look it up (that's how I got into wizard rock all those years ago) or 2) I was skimming through MuggleNet one day and I stumbled across their own fanfiction website.

My FF.net account was created on October 8th, 2007 but I'm pretty sure I was reading fic on that site before that (I didn't publish my first fic until December 24th, 2007) and interestingly, I apparently created an account on Sink Into Your Eyes (A Harry/Ginny fanfic site) one day before I created my FF.net account.

Even if I can't pinpoint the exact reason I started reading fic or the exact date of when I read my first fic, I know I've at least been reading fanfic since October 2007. Which means I've been reading fanfic for fifteen years now!

*I also honestly can't tell you how or why I started listening to podcasts. But again, the first podcasts I listened to were Harry Potter ones so Harry Potter seems to be my gateway into all the different parts of the internet & fandom. Seriously. I learned about John & Hank Green and Nerdfighters because of one of my roommates at an HP conference. I got on Twitter because of wanting to stay in touch with the people I met at an HP conference. I got on Tumblr because of my friends I met at an HP conference. The first pop culture related merch I ever purchased for myself was something HP related. 😆

Yes, folks, the rumors are true. Alohomora! podcast is coming to a close – but not anytime (too) soon, and not without some epic, fun, and crazy in-depth discussions (and maybe *wink* an extra special guest or two… or three…) Though before we jump to the ending, let’s discuss how we got here.

When Alohomora! launched in 2012 as the fandom’s original Harry Potter reread, it was to a massive global audience. Not a single one of us could have anticipated just how much the fandom was starving for discussion, nor how quickly the podcast and community was going to grow. We became a household name overnight, from being listed alongside fandom greats such as MuggleCast and PotterCast in Harry Potter BuzzFeed quizzes to garnering hundreds upon hundreds of comments on each of our episodes. In fact, though the craze has settled since our launch, Alohomora! remains in the Top 5 of the most downloaded Harry Potter podcasts of all time, and we hold the title of the second-longest-running continuously released Harry Potter podcast.

Throughout the past twelve years and over 400 episodes, we’ve explored the series week after week, chapter after chapter, topic after topic, and movie after movie, and now it is time to embark on our final chapter: finishing our second re-read in our Final 100 episodes.

Don’t worry! We still have two full years of episodes (95 chapters and 5 films, to be exact), and there once again will be episodes even more regularly, as we’re going back to weekly releases! That means more magic, more often, for you!

For the past twelve years, we’ve been so grateful for the support we’ve received and the community we’ve built. The true magic in this reread has been Opening the Dumbledore with our hosts, editors, guests, and listeners. Our Final 100 is going to be no less exciting. We are kicking the first block of episodes off with a celebration of community, which you can learn more about on Episode 402 when it hits the stream June 1, 2024.

I defended Jily and James specifically on Mugglecast this week via email, friends, but I don’t think the hosts responded adequately!!

Frustrated by fandom’s general Snape apologist tendencies. Which seems entrenched in the Mugglecast hosts who normally I find to be quite generous in their analysis. But in this case James is a bully with little to redeem him. Which is just…..ugh. Also, seems to completely undermine Lily’s agency and decision-making. If he sucked, why would she have married him?

Would love to have some other Jily fans write in to them in support and defense of Jily!!

‘harry potter and the deathly hallows’ was published 10 years ago today.

i started my journey with the series 6 years previously when my 3rd grade class read and discussed ‘sorcerer’s stone’ together before going to see the film. in reflecting upon the ways harry potter has had an impact on my life, i came up with 16 ways for the last 16 years. 

what are yours?

i had always enjoyed reading before, but after making my way through book one, i fell head-over-heels in love with it.

because the material was so rich, i learned how to be an active and analytical reader.

i jumped at any chance to incorporate hp into an essay or project for school. some of my favorites: a research paper on hp’s references to greek mythology (5th grade), a presentation and speech on the dangers of banning books (10th grade), and an essay inspired by proust’s ‘madeleine moment’ on how smelling the yellowed, tattered pages of my copy of ‘sorcerer’s stone’ transports me back to 3rd grade (college).

i’ve always been happy to be called a nerd and completely deserve the moniker.

having hermione as a role model gave me the confidence to do well in school and strive to be the best in the class (and a bit of an overachiever)

which is maybe why i was voted ‘most likely to succeed’ in 8th grade

and how i ended up in the top ten the final marking period of 12th grade

and how i earned a 3.989 gpa in college.

mugglecast was the first podcast i subscribed to, and still one of the dozens i listen to today. (i could also go on about how podcasts have changed my life but will save that for another time.)

i attended hp trivia nights every month at my local library and made friends with the two amazing children’s librarians there. i still want to be like them when i grow up.

hp paved the way for ya fiction, which remains my favorite genre to read.

this lead me to discovering john green’s novels, and in turn, vlogbrothers and the incredible community that is nerdfighteria.

through the online hp and nerdfighter communities, i’ve made friends all over the world.

all of my closest friends have read hp and are as enthusiastic about it as i am.

though the magic described in the books may not be real, there’s a certain kind of magic just as powerful i’ve experienced at every midnight release for the books and films. it’s a feeling of friendship and community, of love and loyalty, of empathy and good.

so, am i still in love with ‘harry potter’ after all this time? always.
