entangled | dave & nell
TIMING: current. PARTIES: @seizethecarpe and @nelllraiser. SUMMARY: dave wants to make a snack of nell. CONTENT: sibling death mentions and ptsd symptoms.
Dave paced the beach agitatedly. He’d rented out the dingy he’d told Griffin about, and had started sailing out to quarantine himself when he had gotten the texts from the demon summoner. He wasn’t about to tell her what he was going through, barely even felt a twinge of guilt at the mention of Mina’s broken ribs. He looked down in agitation at her claw marks on his arm, the worn and bloodied bandages around the vicious bite from that rabid werewolf. Weird fucking week. Without even realising what he was doing, he’d turned the boat around and texted her to come to him. They could look for her mystery seal together. The first place Nell should check? Down Dave’s gullet. He smiled slightly at the thought, and looked up when he smelled her approaching. Dave loved a challenging hunt, alright.
It was strange to Nell that she was now searching for two selkies when she’d had little to do with tacking them before a few months ago. There was the selkie from her birthday party that she still owed an apology, and then now there was a mysterious murder selkie out doing who knows what to try and track down. And somehow the only new selkie she’d stumbled upon in all that time had been Dave. Her seal luck didn’t seem to be going all that well. To be honest she’d been a little surprised to hear that he wanted her help finding this killer selkie, figuring he still didn’t trust her so far as he could throw her. But maybe their little chat after he’d returned her jacket had created a small and sinuous thread between them that could be tugged on. Squinting at the boat coming in, she kicked off her shoes to step into the edge of the ocean. “Alright- so where do you think this selkie is?”
There was, in some tiny part of Dave’s brain, a shrieking voice demanding that he turn around, go back. This was no longer an accident, this was premeditated. He knew this was wrong, that he couldn’t be trusted around her. Hell, he’d lied to her to bring her right to this rocky beach, trapping her away from other people so that no one would see her corpse drop beneath the water. Dave grit his teeth together, clinging to the edge of his boat. Don’t get off, that tiny voice whispered. Turn around. Call a hunter. You’re out of control. Call a hunter. You’d call a hunter on anyone else like this.
Later, he wouldn’t be able to say whether it was his hunger or his pride that had him decide against it. He stepped off the back of the boat and waded up the beach towards her, his lips set in a thin line, his trident in one hand and his net in the other. “You need to speak up,” Dave growled, touching his ear as he walked closer, using the seconds of her repeating herself to close the gap between them. He whipped the net around her ankles and body slammed into her, tangling her feet in the thick rope webbing.
Nell had been about to repeat herself when the breath was knocked out of her, in no way prepared to be tackled by the larger man. “What the-?” Her feet kicked instinctively, already trying to free herself from the netting she was trapped in. A familiar panic began to rise in her throat, remembering what it felt like to be held in a cage with little room to move. The net wasn’t exactly the same, but it was similar enough to bring the musky scent of the Ring’s underground to the forefront of her memory. “What are you doing?” she yelled at the selkie, able to feel her magic bubbling to life in her veins as an instinctual response. She didn’t want to hurt Dave, though. Hitting him with magic on the boat had been more of a defensive reaction when she’d been tired and spent, and after hearing Dave speak about his own guilt and having to soldier through it...she couldn’t help the shred of empathy that he’d spawned somewhere in her chest. “If you don’t get me the fuck out of this net I’m gonna- I’ll-” But even her threats fell short, her heart not yet in it when she wasn’t sure what Dave was trying to achieve.
The more she tried to untangle herself, the more Dave trapped her in the net, the weights dangling around the edges kept the net weighing her down as he dragged the net over her head, manhandling her roughly. He paused, body trembling with the exertion. He knew this one. She was dangerous, but not malevolent. He’d thought about tearing her throat out before, he’d been justified in it too. Someone so dangerous didn’t deserve to win. That was his gut instinct, his drive, not the hunger, because wanting to eat someone because you were starving with a full belly made no sense. The only explanation was that he’d weighed his choices, and decided she was a threat. Tiny and struggling under the weight of his net, though, Nell still made him pause. His gut encouraged him on. Dave roared, inch long canines just inches from Nell’s face, his breath stinking of seal flesh and rancid fish. Blood stained saliva dripped from his lips.
“Get the fuck off!” Nell growled as the net simply entangled her more and more, still teetering between whether or not she should let her magic take hold. Beyond that was the problem of trying to remind herself that she wasn’t holed up beneath the Ring, even as she swore she could hear the whispers of Jax and his mind controlling voice in her ears. He wasn’t here- he couldn’t be. Not when he was dead. The distraction of trying to fight against her own mind was more than enough to have it be nearly too late before Nell really registered Dave and his blood mouth getting closer, and one scarred arm raised to be an instinctive barrier between her and the selkie. She didn't understand. What had changed between their last conversation and now? Maybe she actually had let on too much when they’d talked about guilt, and he’d realized she had far too much of it for her not to be a liability. And liabilities needed to be done away with. This was reaching a point where she needed to act, and she would have already gotten there had thoughts of past trauma not been so time-consuming.
Without thinking, Dave bit down on Nell’s scarred skin, puncturing through flesh until his teeth hit bone. He paused again, unable to say why, save that it would take a moment to bite hard enough to tear a human arm off. Dave inhaled, like a connoisseur might sniff at a wine before inhaling. There was no smell to magic, but human flesh and human fear. It would scratch the itch like nothing else had. He breathed in and began to bite down when he caught scent of a much, much more enticing offering. Sweet and salty in equal measure. Half man, half seal. The perfect mesh of two extremes, the love child of the earth and the ocean. Dave shoved Nell backwards into the thigh deep water, and plunged into the sea. If there was a hesitation in his mind, Dave did not show it.
The bite was the last straw. Pain ricocheted up Nell’s arm as she grunted in pain, magic ready at her fingertips and a spell on the edge of her lips to be let loose until her mouth was filled with salty sea water. She’d barely registered being shoved further into the water at first, too caught up with the physical attack. Now she had a bigger problem than a seal who’d changed his mind about killing her, the weighted edges of the net not helping in the least when it came to freeing herself. The water around her injured arm turned red as she continued to thrash for a long moment. Then she was forcing herself to be still, running through her options as she laid prone in the water. Get out, get out, get out! It was the only thought she could focus on, still feeling as if she were fighting against the iron bars of a cage rather than the rope of a net.
A pulse of magic, and Nell was finally free, the sound of the net magically ripping underwater echoing further out to sea. She burst through the hole, just big enough for her to step out of the cursed contraption, and look around for Dave, her uninjured hand already swiping some of the blood from the place where Dave had bit her over one of her summoning sigil tattoos. But...where the fuck had he gone off to? Confusion took hold now that she was free of the net, and Dave was nowhere in sight. Why hadn’t he tried to finish what he’d started? She might have sent a tracking spell after him, trying to find where he’d gone off to had the dripping blood of her injury not reminded her that she had other things to deal with before she could find him. Wordlessly, she gathered her shoes from the edge of the beach while she used her blood magic to scab the bite over.
As Nell trudged her way up the shore she couldn’t help but feel angry, already thinking of ways she might protect herself from Dave in the future...many of them ending with her going after him another day, and making sure he didn’t get another chance to go after her. But below her self-preservation was a returning of guilt, wondering whether or not she could actually blame him for trying to end things. She’d already proven herself a liability, and she shouldn’t be surprised that he’d tried to make sure she didn’t hurt anyone in the future. Still...she’d let herself hope that maybe he’d seen something in her worth not killing with the way they’d shared bits of themselves over her jacket. Stupid. The witch had known better than to put her faith in something like that, and done it anyway— looking for validation in the wrong places. With any luck, she’d be more careful next time, and stop showing her cards to anyone who so much as began to offer her solace.

A mighty musky
Speaking of Detroit River Fishing ...
On Monday morning my buddy was walleye fishing in a boat no more than 200 hundreds yard from the dock where my brothers and I caught those perch last week.
One of the guys he was with hooked into this 40-inch-long muskellunge and boated the sharp-toothed monster with nothing more than his 10-pound-test walleye tackle.
Immediately after this photo was taken the fish was released back into the river.

Fish Equipment Ideas for Beginners
Two Step Process For Fish Equipment Selection
Every year someone always comes up to me and asks "hey I gonna start fishing for "xyz" fish, what kind of stuff do I need?" https://fishingequipmentstores.com
So you start running down the list, do you have a rod, what kind? Do you have a reel, what kind? Are you gonna be fishing from a boat or bank? And this list can go on and on and on.  Official site
If you currently have a rod/reel combo then by all means use it unless you are fishing for something way bigger like salmon, steelhead, muskie or pike. If you are strictly fishing for pan fish, some bass, perch, a few walleye or trout then stick with it for now.
I can't tell you how many times people I see future anglers walking out of the store with equipment that is way over their head, it's crazy. Salesman in some stores are just after the commission regardless of what the fisherman's experience. I can also tell you that if you walk into three different sporting good stores and tell them you will be fishing for bass from the bank, you will have three different recommendations.
Step 1 in Picking Fishing Equipment
Experienced fisherman have many rods and each rod serves a different purpose. Salmon fisherman will have a rod for rivers, jigging, trolling, downrigger, etc. Each rod serves a different purpose. These fisherman did not go out and purchase all of these rods at the same time. They added to their stock pile as time went on and that is what you should do.
Most people have a budget when they go into a store and they try hard to stick with it. However, the salesman will try to get them into a more pricier rod/reel combo and that is not necessary. During spring season many stores will have sales on rod/reel combo's.
Get one of them and use it until you figure out if you are a lifelong fisherman or a once a year type of angler.
The big box retailers will have something in your price range. Anything around $50 is a decent price (plus or minus $15). My walleye buddy picked up a great walleye rod/reel combo for $50. I about fell off my chair when he told me what he purchased. You can pretty much guess what I did the next day.
Step 2 Fishing Gear
Now that you have your rod/reel combo the next step is to purchase some crank baits, bobbers, lures, hooks, sinkers, etc. This will be greatly dependent on what type of fish you are targeting. Bass is totally different from walleye, but both types of lures will catch either species. Crappie will require a different set up and it is best to use the retail stores to help you decide what to purchase.
Just a small reminder that if you do get hooked on fishing, your tackle box will grow beyond comprehension. I have so much gear after 50 years I can't possibly use all of it up in the next 20.
Fishing line is another consideration but just like above, stick with something that is reasonably priced. To determine how good the line is, take some out and make one overhand knot (like tying your shoes), then pull on it to see how easy it breaks. This will give you a good idea of the line you are using.
Now the only thing you have left to do is go out and start fishing. Usually when a person just starts they hang out with someone who has some experience, if you find yourself in a situation where you will be doing it alone, then I highly recommend watching people who fish beside you, they will show you some of the gear they are using.

When it comes to fishing, there's nothing more important than selecting the right sort of fly fishing line. Fishing musky reel  choices are endless. Walk into any discount store, bait and tackle shop, or store focusing on rods, and you will immediately spot the wide array of brands and fashions that are offered.
These poles are common accessible in the market nowadays. The Lamiglas Certified Pro Salmon & Steelhead Rods assortment might be located in retail vendors throughout the united states and in several internet stores selling fishing products. You can either choose to order online or take a look at an outlet store. Therefore, top anglers ought to have merely the finest tackle, so go out and acquire one now!
As you start to test your fishing skills, do not be afraid to go to one other people you locate fishing exactly the same streams and rivers. Most are more than willing to express tips about what the fish are hitting on and where they have got gotten the most bites. The people who are involved in the sport like it that's contagious. If you want to find out about the hot spots in your area and best fishing techniques quickly, engage a local self-help guide to get you out a couple of times. The experience that they've got gathered fishing in your area will insure that you will be getting off about the right foot.
Musky reel length is an additional important characteristic. As a general rule, shorter rods are better or more accurate casts, perhaps in waters choked with scrub where you may decide to land your bate in clearer areas. Longer rods cast less accurately, but provide more power for landing larger fish. Your height is another important aspect in picking the top musky reel length. Generally, shorter people will spot longer rods unwieldy. Longer rods may also be tougher to manipulate under trees and other heavy cover on banks, making them better suited for boat fishing.

Another important thing to not overlook is the that you'll be using. Always match the strength of your reel with the strength of your rod. Tackle is often rated over a scale ranging from ultralight to heavy. If you mistakenly pair a light reel with a heavy musky reel or make any other combination, neither bit of tackle will work and also it will.
It's such exhilaration to paddle a kayak that I generally start with trolling. Breathe in the fresh lake air, love scanning the scenery around, skim carefree through the water's surface, and thrill for the mild chest "pump" developed by hand propelling the craft. What I discovered in the beginning that's NOT needed to upset this serene setting was obviously a long fishing musky reel in my way! My compact kayak fly fishing musky reel as well as many other attributes, is the best fishing companion for the reason that its short length never interferes with the blade stroke! Indeed, with the extra long kayak models handle firmly set up inside my kayak's deep right side musky reel holder, or even in the special pocket drilled during my center console, I'm able to dig my paddle right in just after dark close, low lying line while trolling; in other words, an average, natural stroke without hassle or modification.
Each telescopic musky reel is constructed in identical materials his or her counterparts that are manufactured since the standard one and two sectioned rods. They are manufactured from fiberglass, graphite, diamond carbon or any other composites of stated materials to allow for easy slippage into the other and ease inside the frequent lowering and raising of which. The guide lines or eyes are typically constructed for strength, however, varying grade eyes can be found equally as they're while using traditional rods. The material used for your eye area consist of titanium SIC (silicon/carbon ceramic) to micro aluminum oxide.

Korea Day 2
Started off our morning at our cute little hanok guest house with some free breakfast before heading to Biwon Coffee for some drinks to wash it all down.
Tumblr media
Iced black bean latte. Lightly creamy, slightly sweet, sort of like soy milk with a bit more of an after mouth feel. Quite refreshing for a relatively creamy drink!
My friend was now caffeinated so we were ready to tackle out first of 5 main palaces/shrines at Changdeokgung. We took a quick preliminary walk around the grounds starting at the throne room.
Tumblr media
Entrance of Chang Deok Gung.
Tumblr media
Naksunjae (King Heonjong's library & living quarters)
But we planned on returning for an English tour so we entered the connected palace of Changgyeonggungg.
Tumblr media
The main purpose of this palace area was to act as a residential area for the queens, princesses, and concubines of the king.
Tumblr media
King Seonjjong's Taesil (Placenta Chamber)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love me a giant pond. This is Chungdangji Pond area is comprised of 2 ponds (Daechundaeji & Sochundangji ponds) and the Daeonsil green house
After our casual stroll we returned the the Changdeokgung Palace for the English Tour. We had the sassiest tour guide and I absolutely adored her and all her commentary about her job, the history of the palace, and just general existence. I couldn’t stop laughing (and learning) the whole time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The king & queens living quarters.
The tour was great but we were sttaarrrvinng. We only had a short time before our next tour started so we decided to have some mandu nearby since this area is more well known for their more traditional homey meals. We went to a restaurant called Sujae Mandu Saengmyeon Gooksu and had a very filling meal of noodles and dumplings but of course we left room for a bit of dessert from the convenience store next door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Candy Pop ice cream bar. Soda flavored popsicle on the outside and milk flavored ice cream bar on the inside.
We got to the Secret Garden of Changdeokgung Palace just on time for the tour. The garden is expansive and I’m glad the tour took lots of breaks so I could enjoy the serenity of the space a bit too. But it was also nice getting a run down of what everything is.
Tumblr media
Buyongi Pond and Juhamnu Pavilion
Tumblr media
Jondeokjeong Pavilion
Tumblr media
Korean peninsula pond (there’s no exact name but according to the guide people call it this because the shape looks like North & South Korea).
We were pretty palace-d out for the day so we spent our later afternoon exploring the Bukchon Neighborhood, Seoul’s traditional Korean residential area. Before we even started we passed by a stand that my friend pointed out as a common Korean street food called Heottok. I’ve never had this before so I had to give it a try and oh my gawd...
Tumblr media
Heottok, a chewy fried pancake filled with honey. I went straight to heaven. I could eat a million of these.
We continued walking into we hit a random alley filled with small souvenir shops, jewelry shops, and restaurants selling food out the side.
Tumblr media
Here we found some spots selling shikae, a korean iced rice drink. I had tried some before at a Korean spa in LA but needed to try a full cup here.
Tumblr media
Mild and sweet and so refreshing. I love the bits of rice for texture.
Tumblr media
Our path led us onto Samcheong Ro (which my friend said is known as a coffee street where we found a large staircase that led us toward Hanok Village.
Tumblr media
Gorgeous view from the top of the staircase. You can even see a bit of the Blue House in the distance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s not a ton to do in Hanok Village but it’s amazing seeing the old style houses in this otherwise very modern urban area. The houses are still in use though so you have to mind your manners.
At this point we were about ready for more food so we made our way to Noryangin Fish Market to pick up a cheap dinner. I loved this place but it’s not for the faint of heart. Every employee tried speaking various languages to us from Japanese to Chinese to English, trying to elicit a reaction so they could push you to buy their fish. It’s especially bad since we came close to closing time. However, that also means if you’re a good haggler you may get a better deal.
Tumblr media
Inside of the market. Most places will prepare the fish for you though you may have to ask them a bit more insistently.
Tumblr media
We decided on this booth since they were a bit less pushy, had reasonable prices, healthy looking fish, and they let us do a half and half plate. ($30 for a huge tray of salmon & halibut)
Tumblr media
We went with half halibut which is a very popular fish to eat raw in Korea. The guy slicing the fish definitely isn’t an expert (he got some blood on it) but for the price it’s totally worth it.
We took our bounty of food and headed to Yeouido Hangang Park for a little night picnic. This is a very popular spot to enjoy the Han River and even though it was a random weekday night, there were still lots of groups out enjoying the clear skies and beautiful atmosphere.
Tumblr media
This place is lit up with various types of lights. It’s May but it felt like Christmas.
Tumblr media
Our bounty from the market. 3 pieces of uni for $7 and a huge plate of salmon & halibut for $30.
Tumblr media
Finished off the meal with some cheese ice cream from the main cruise boarding center.
After dinner we boarded the Eland Moonlight Cruise which took us down and back up the Han River. The cruise had some snacks on board, allowed us to get a great view of the night skyline, and even had a small music performance.
Tumblr media
Cute little set up on the booth for photos.
Tumblr media
Lovely Seoul skyline view from the boat.
Tumblr media
Live music on the boat made the whole experience feel a little extra special.
After the cruise we walked around the park more and picked up some beondegi from one of the food stands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beondegi is silkworm pupae. It’s a semi-common Korean street food. I’ve never tried it and it’s my policy to try anything. It was tolerable but I’m not a fan either. It sort of tasted like mushrooms filled with cod roe texture wise. The flavor was grassy and musky.
My friend ate my cup of pupae too but I was hungry again so I picked up some snacks from the Ministop around the corner from us for a midnight snack. The spicy chicken feet was surprisingly good for a microwave meal though it was also surprisingly spicy too.
Tumblr media
My stomach was not happy with me the next morning but it was delicious.

Reel In Success With These Fishing Tips | Shallow Minded Fishing Charters 30A
Tumblr media
Sitting in a canoe or other boat and relaxing pursuit. Although you must have some information beforehand, everything you need to know is contained in this article.
Your hook must be sharp if you want to catch as many fish as possible. If you do not use a sharp hook, they won’t set in the fish and you may go home empty-handed!
Every good fisherman needs to make sure they have plenty of sharp hooks. If it could scratch your fingernail then it’s good enough to use. If not, replace it or sharpen it if you wish to catch additional fish.
Understand a fish’s migration patterns of whatever fish you are going after. In the spring, for example, it is best to cast uphill. In the fall, the fish will be moving in the other direction, so fish downhill.
You don’t have to keep every single fish that you catch.
Regardless of which method you use when fishing, take care to respect both them and their natural environment. Keep in mind that nature belongs to animals and other types of wildlife are crucial to their survival. Do what you can to avoid destroying it.
Be mindful of how the wind affects fish movement patterns. You should be casting toward the wind. If it is really windy most fish will be near the bottom; therefore, the fish will more than likely stay too low in the water to where you aren’t able to reach them.
Whether you’re new when it comes to fishing, or have been fishing for a while, it is always best to go fishing with a great attitude. Fishing can be one of the most frustrating sports out there, but having a poor attitude can ruin your trip. Don’t be hard on yourself if you have not gotten a fish to bite.
Do not fret if a massive fish cause you to panic. Don’t reel in fish while it’s swimming away. Keep your rod at around a 45-degree angle relative to the lake and keep it aimed at the fish.
It is important for a fisherman to select a tackle box that contains only the essentials. Carrying a large tackle box around can quickly become annoying and there is really no need for that burden. You will able to move better while on land with only the tackle and equipment you need for today.
Practice is the most important tool a fly fisherman. As time goes by, and you will be able to land flies where you would like them to be.
Don’t throw trash in the water while you fish in. Trash can damage the environment and it’s harmful to both plants and fish alike.
Move around every now and then if you are impatient while fishing. This helps keep your mind alert and help you enjoy the scenery from a new spot. You may also find a place where the fish are actively biting.
If you want to catch a bigger fish, you must make sure that you’re increasing the size of the bait you are using. Blugill and Crappie are the ideal bait that you can use to catch bigger fish like Pike or Muskie.
Don’t get discouraged if you don’t catch very much. Patience is the most important part of good fishing. Stay at least 30 minutes in any area before giving up totally on it. There are different reasons for fish to be affected in a certain area, the amount of movement, and weather conditions all can have an effect.
Fishing is not so difficult if you take the time to learn how to do it right. Use the advice you just read to help boost your confidence next time you go fishing.

Hi AMFisHers! This blog post is the full story of my recent two day 2017 musky opener fishing trip.
The trip started Saturday June 3rd as that is when musky season officially opened in the area I decided to fish. This is a lake I have fished for many years now and have caught some muskies here in the past. I know the lake very well and know a lot of great musky spots, but my biggest challenge this season was musky fishing out of a kayak.
Musky fishing is already a challenge in itself, strong heavy gear is needed along with big heavy baits, so fishing for musky from a boat is already draining enough and I was very prepared for how draining it would be from a kayak, but determination could not hold me back!
I arrived at the lake around noon as my plan for the first day of fishing was to stay out on the lake well into the late evening as I wanted to experience and get more familiar with fishing for muskies at night. I got all my gear ready and the weather was in full cooperation as it was a warm day with lot’s of sunshine, only immediate problem I realized was the water temperature was still quite cold. The weather in this area had not been hot enough over several days so with the cooler temps I immediately knew I would have to revisit my strategies that were in place in order to try and catch some muskies.
As I headed out to my first spot that was a big weedy bay not far from shore that leads into some deeper water, I was going to stick with my strategy for a short while to see if I needed to rethink things as I kind of knew I would. My presentation was to use 6 to 7 inch bucktails in bright colors due to the very sunny day. I started casting right up over the weedy area, as the weeds were submerged and the presentation was to burn these bucktails back quickly to trigger any active fish strikes. About 20 casts in with no action I decided to slow the speed of my retrieve down slightly as I mentioned the water was still quite cool for early June so it made sense to slow my bait retrieve down. After another 20 casts in this same bay with 4 different bucktails there was still no musky action or even any sign of any fish being interested.
I switched from bucktails to some mid size minnow style crankbaits, then some mid size soft plastic musky baits and lastly some top water pro style baits. The result on my first spot was the same with all the baits I used, no fish in sight no fish interested in what I had to offer. The weather was not ideal as muskies prefer warmer water in the early months during and after their spawn is complete, but a sunny hot day and water that was still cold made me quickly revisit my approach and instantly start considering much slower bait presentations, so I was actually approaching it like I was fishing in late fall.
I hit my second spot which is a decent size rock shoal a few hundreds yards straight out from the main dock area. This spot is ideal for muskies, large somewhat shallow rocky sandy flats with many scattered weedy patches that are surrounded by deep water escapes and even thick weed cover deeper water as well, the best of everything. I started off with my original approach for several casts and actually got a solid hit as soon as my bucktail with the water. It felt like a good hit from a decent size fish but I knew it was not a musky and was pretty confident it was a nice big smallmouth bass that was hanging around the rock shoal. Low and behold the battle was on, this very chunky smallmouth was jumping everywhere trying to get off the hooks!
Needless to say during both these smallmouth bass fights the fish got the best of me this day, as they jumped and bounced off the kayak as I was was pulling them into the cradle I had secured on the side of my kayak. After wrapping up at this spot I paddled over to my third spot which was the largest one I had easy access to and holds muskies. Again it a large flat with various weed edges in that 5 to 10ft depth range and has access to deeper water and shallower water. I started off with top water, then went to my shallower running crankbait, then back to bucktails and finally a medium size soft plastic musky bait. At this spot I must have made over 12,977 casts and figure eights, talk about grueling work! Unfortunately again there were no musky sittings in the area, nor any kind of fish activity at all, so the pattern of this many casts with several baits and not fish brought me back to the fact that the fish had really turned off being active and it was going to take even more than a slower fall presentation to hook into any.
Day one ended with me continuing to fish right up until around 10pm, but I fished the two first spots again and again as they were much closer to shore so safety had to be first. Once day one ended I went back to the main dock, loaded all my gear and kayak and decided to try some casting from shore to see if any big ones were cruising the shallows at night. Worked the same group of bait presentations I had been working all day, not one bite not one breach not one fish anywhere to be found. After a few more chats with fellow musky anglers they too mentioned a few smaller musky run in’s but no landed fish, so I decided to call it a day as the bugs by this time were out in full force.
I crashed for the night as a typical angler would do, in my JEEP and enjoyed a very not so good sleep, when I actually thought it would not be too bad to sleep in but those JEEP seats are not comfy at all! Got up early Sunday morning grabbed some breakfast and a coffee from Tim’s and headed back to the dock which was only 7 minutes away. Note to anyone thinking of sleeping in there vehicle overnight during a fishing trip, make sure to make yourself as secure as possible, which is why I decided to crash at a Tim Horton’s because it was an all night open location with a lot of car and people traffic, cameras and lights, seemed like the safest place to crash. Also make sure to have a very bright luminous flashlight handy, as it can make for a great self defense item, by utilizing the intense brightness to blind the eyes of anyone either trying to get into your vehicle or trying to harm you.
Once I got to the lake it was absolutely the most stunning view I had seen in many months! The lake was completely motionless and resembled a large piece of glass, not a wave or any water movement in sight. While getting things prepped and assessing if the rain they called for was going to actually happen, I knew that water this still would not make for good musky fishing. While enjoying my coffee and breakfast there was zero and I mean zero water activity by anything. No bugs moving on the surface not birds feeding and no fish breaches, all things you do not want to see not taking place.
A few other anglers that were there for their second day of fishing walked over and we engaged in a lengthy conversation about if we any of us were actually going to fish that day. Since I had mad the 2 plus hour drive up to this lake from Toronto and was in no rush to get home, I spoke with a few guys a long while longer to see if any changes would start happening to the lake. After some time had passed a slight wind picked up and the water started to move, this was a good sign but it needed to last in order for the fishing to start picking up. The wind stayed steady and the few of us were about to get out on the water in the next few minutes, when it clouded over even more and the rain moved in.
I jumped into my truck to observe what was going to happen next, as rain usually stirs up the lake and fish start to feed. Low and behold nothing was happening, the wind got stronger the rain less intense and there was once again zero fish activity, no surface breaches which is usually the norm once it starts to rain. I decided to wait a while longer as it was still quite early and cool that morning. A couple of boats headed out anyway and I used this time to rethink about what my strategy was going to be if I got out on the water.
After a short while it was still raining but quite lightly, so I decided to shore fish again with some top water musky baits, to see if anything was going on. When I say zero attention to my baits I mean a big fat “0”, nothing was anywhere, no roaming fish not feeding fish. From here I tried a few more musky baits with no success and decided to downsize dramatically to see if any other species might be feeding. Started using smaller size inline spinners and again no fish action of any kind. After an hour or so of experimenting I could see the two boats heading back towards the dock, with their heads shaking side to side as they had not had any luck. The second boat was heading to the other side of the lake and also gave me the we saw no fish look as well, this was when I knew battling the lake in that wind with my kayak with a hope that fish would start to feed was completely off the table at this point.
I continued to walk around the immediate shoreline casting various size baits with no success at all and the decision to pack it all in and head home seemed fitting right about then. All in all it was a very tiring musky opener with a lot learned on my end even though I did not catch any fish, I was going home with a new appreciation for musky fishing as well as very sore muscles.
The fish of 10,000 casts definitely beat all the anglers that weekend and that is how things go sometimes, we do everything we can and still come up empty handed when it comes to catching fish, but the learning’s are the most valuable takeaway for any angler who stuck it through as long as they could.
Hope you enjoyed this musky story…tight lines!
