Ice Ado Cancellation

So the official Yuri On Ice account dropped this tweet last night. Ice Adolescence is cancelled for sure.

I think we had all known that it was but the confirmation still stings.

And this wasn't just another cancellation like Netflix shows get. This movie was already well underway - animation had started. They already had music and choreography! Multiple famous skaters were working with them. They had released a trailer for it--and then it all got dropped.

I agree with Denki here - something major happened that we'll never know about, whether that was the Olympic committee or politics or MAPPA channeling resources into other series like AoT or JJK.

Either way, it stings. Yoi is literally the show that put MAPPA on the map, and it had a giant international audience. Like just looking at how many different languages are under the announcement post is enough to show how beloved it was. This tweet from Junichi Suwabe (the voice of Victor) really expresses it.

And I've always loved the fandom. It was a welcoming and happy place to be back when the show first aired. I don't think fandom can really exist like that anymore. (┬┬﹏┬┬)

Anyway, if you're reading this and have never seen Yuri on Ice, go watch it. It's literally a masterpiece on Sayo and Kubo's end of things and has excellent characters and storytelling.

Gojo Satoru has always been insufferable, it is a known fact to everyone in Jujutsu High. He had been more insufferable this past week, though. 

He had been complaining to his bestfriends about you and Suguru swears that he might shave his whole head or commit murder as a result of his insanity. Being the receiving end of Gojo’s relentless antics can make you go crazy like that. 

Suguru’s sitting on his best friend’s couch, doing the paper that both of them should be doing. Instead, Satoru has been whining endlessly about you, claiming that you aren’t giving him attention anymore since you got hyped for the last episode of your favorite anime show, Attack on Titan. 

“Satoru,” he sighs, rubbing his temples. “It’s normal for our age to be obsessed over shows. She’s not cheating on you, stop being dramatic.” 

“I know but all she does is talk about it!” Satoru crosses his arms over his chest before huffing, glaring at your poor Levi plushie. “Especially that shorty over there.” 

“You’re right, Satoru. Maybe she does love Levi over you.” Suguru smirks at him, a mischievous glint in his eyes which earned a sharp look from his best friend. 

“OH shut the fuck up Sugu-” 

Satoru’s rant came to an abrupt halt when his door swung open. You rushed to him, pulling him in a tight embrace. Caught off guard, Satoru stiffened for a moment before tentatively wrapping his arms around you, rubbing your back in a soothing pattern. His eyes widened when you started to sob, staining his shirt with your tears.  

(Suguru pretends he is non-existent in Satoru’s apartment) 

He couldn’t understand anything you’re saying because you’re sobbing and your voice is muffled with his shirt so he pulls away and looks at you worriedly, concern etching his features.  “What’s wrong, babe? What happened?”

He gently scoops you into his arms, settling on the couch with you nestled on his lap. 

“It’s over, Eren’s dead.” you mumbled, your voice laden with the aftermath of the episode . He couldn’t help but burst into a fit of laughter  that quickly died down when he saw your puffy eyes and the glare you shot his way. He halted his amused look when he noticed you pulling away but his grip on you remained still, preventing you from escaping. 

He grins at you, pressing a kiss on your forehead. “It’s okay, Y/N. I’m here.” He assures you, his voice soothing. “Let’s get some ice cream and cuddle all day, yeah?” 

Satoru couldn’t help but to revel in the sensation of having your undivided attention, you just look so cute with your pout as you look at him with puppy eyes. The grip you have on him when he soothes you didn’t go unnoticed by him too. His eyes flickered to Suguru, who shook his head begrudgingly on the other side of the couch before returning to his work. 

“It’s such a shame, ‘Toru. I’m gonna miss Levi so much, my pretty pretty baby girl.”  you cooed, your eyes fixed on your phone. Satoru’s eyebrows shot up in confusion before your words registered in his brain.

“HA?!” He exclaimed and glanced over, only to find out that your lock screen wallpaper has been changed. No longer was it graced by Satoru’s cheeky grin as he stole a kiss from you, it had now been replaced by Levi ackerman. You constantly talking about your fictional ‘husband’ annoys your boyfriend but setting him as a wallpaper?! That is so low. You’ve done it now. 

Satoru looks at you in disbelief, his eyes wide in bewilderment. “Y/N! How could you betray your boyfriend like that?! It’s a show, he’s not real. He’s not your baby girl. I am!” 

A giggle escapes your lips as you look up at him“You’re my baby girl?” you teased. 

“That’s not the point.” He complains. “Why don’t you dote on your boyfriend instead?  I’m clearly more attractive and taller than Remy or whatever that guy’s name is.” 

“Satoru, you’ve read the manga. You know who Levi is.” Suguru chimed in, emitting a groan from your boyfriend. 

“Shut up Suguru! I thought you were on my side!” 

The next day, you were surprised when Satoru didn’t accompany you to school as usual. Throughout your shared class, he was uncharacteristically quiet. Not to mention that he styled and parted his hair differently, mirroring the look of your fictional crush. Suguru and Ieri couldn’t contain their laughter when they first caught sight of Satoru’s new look. 

Gone was his usual nosiness and his penchant for poking into other people’s business. Satoru, now wearing a stoic expression, glared at anyone who dared to look at him. It was clear that he was trying to also embody the persona of Levi Ackerman and you don’t know whether to feel concerned, annoyed, or amused. 

The breaking point came after your last class of the day. Back at Satoru's apartment, he continued with his newfound demeanor, and you'd had enough. Despite trying to hold back laughter at the absurdity of the situation, you found yourself missing the usual antics of your clingy and insufferable boyfriend.

When you requested for cuddles and he responded with a dismissive ‘tch.’ and that did it. You decided to take matters into your own hands so you straddled his lap and cornered him, smirking at the visible reaction you elicited from your boyfriend.

His eyes widened, cheeks flushing, as he looked at you in surprise. 

“Got you.” you grinned at him, your voice dripping with amusement. “I thought I was dating Satoru Gojo so why are you acting like Levi?”

He stammered for a moment, clearly caught off guard. "I-I thought you liked this... stoic stuff."

Rolling your eyes, you leaned in, your lips inches away from his ear. "I like my cute and energetic boyfriend way more," you whispered, the warmth of your breath causing a visible shiver to run down his spine.

“Well Satoru Gojo isn’t your wallpaper, is it?”  he grumbled, a hint of jealousy evident from his voice.  

"Come on, 'Toru, don't be jealous. Levi's just a fictional character. You're the real deal. I also changed back my wallpaper!" you opened your phone to reveal your lock screen, hoping to dispel his jealousy. You changed it back to his face. 

“But babe, you don’t love me anymore” he pouted, his lower lip jutting out a mockingly hurt manner, his expression resembling a wounded puppy. “I figured if I became a replica of him, you’d love me again.” 

You wanted to smack him but you decided against it. You know your boyfriend’s smart but you kinda doubted that once he made that conclusion.

“Satoru, it’s just a show. Of course, I love you!” you reassured, offering a warm smile to emphasize your sincerity. 

Satoru sighs in a deliberately exaggerated manner. A playful grin tugs at his lips as he looks at you.  "Fine, but I better get some extra attention tonight to make up for this betrayal," he demanded. 

You chuckled, and leaned in to plant a quick, affectionate kiss on his cheek. "Deal."

“Also, tell me you love me then.” He added, his hand squeezing your thigh. 

“I love you.” you reply sincerely, 

“Hm?” He leans his ear towards you. “What was that?” 

You decided to play along and plant a soft kiss on his lips, "I," another kiss, "love," followed by another, "you." and you conclude with a final, lingering kiss. 

"Happy?" you say, pulling back.

"Very much," Satoru grins at you victoriously. but then, he looks at you with a sly twinkle in his eyes. "Wait, no. Tell me you don't love Levi and that you'll throw your plushie away so I could cuddle you 24/7."

"No."

"BABE!" Satoru whines. 

You can't help but laugh at his theatrics and without a moment's hesitation, you shower him with even more affection and assurances. Needless to say, that day (and perhaps the entire week), you let him hog you to himself, indulging in countless cuddles and sweet gestures to nurse his ego back to full health.

How AOT's main trio set Ymir free

Eren, Armin, and Mikasa all taught the Founder Ymir valuable lessons, and were instrumental in setting her free. All three of them caught Ymir's attention and she made the effort to reach out to them personally in different ways, observe them, learn from them.

First Eren reached her in the Paths and told her that she's her own person, and can choose what SHE wants rather than follow orders. This was the first time in her long, miserable life, that someone called her a human being. The first time in 2000 years (that would have felt even longer in the Paths, closer to millions of years), that she was told what happened to her was wrong. In her life, she had spent her whole life as a dehumanized slave without any acknowledgement of her own humanity. Eren opened her eyes (literally) to the injustice of her situation and taught her autonomy.

Then Armin arrived to fight Eren, and Ymir watched his every movement closely, even stealing him into the Paths with the Okapi and trapping him there. She watched his conversation with Zeke where he shared that the meaning of life is in appreciating the little moments and the love you already have rather than chasing an unattainable dream. In her life, she longed for an unattainable love/validation from King Fritz who was incapable of giving it to her, since he's a monstrous psychopath. She lived and died yearning for something she would never receive, rather than living for what she had (her daughters). Armin taught her the true meaning of life.

Lastly, Mikasa. From the moment Ymir noticed Mikasa's love for Eren, she was intrigued. She began to peak through Mikasa's lifetime memories, causing her headaches. Then Mikasa killed Eren despite loving him, knowing it's the right thing to do and proving she's not a slave. Ymir herself couldn't do this in her own life, instead choosing to die for the monster she loved, instead of killing him. Mikasa taught her that love does not equal submission.

In the end, all three of the main trio were instrumental in setting Ymir free. In her last appearance, Ymir had a vision of what she wished she had done, what she WOULD have done had she received these three lessons earlier in her life. She would have protected her beloved daughters, the truly important and precious things in her life, rather than being a slave to the abusive king. If she were given another chance, she would have let him die.

In the end, Ymir's deepest most primal desire was a pure and loving human connection, some semblance of tenderness and care, something she was so deprived of. This desire was so strong that it bled into every single Eldian, connecting them all to Ymir through the Paths. One lonely, abused little girl's desperate need to be loved, enveloping every one of her subjects, binding them all to her in an all-consuming web. She has always been desperately reaching out to other people.

In her ill young mind she mistook the king's sick """rewards""" as that love she craved. Eren made her realize "what he did to me was wrong and I have a right to my anger", Armin made her realize "I shouldn't have waited for love from him that would've never come and instead cherished the love of my children", Mikasa made her realize "I should have let him die/killed him myself". Acknowledging all this and making peace with her tragic life and the decisions she made, allowed her to let go. She finally moved on, and in this moment, she appeared not as an immature child, like she did throughout the Rumbling, but now as a grown adult woman.

Ymir's story in the finale is essentially a coming-of-age story from the perspective of a mentally ill, dehumanized slave. She starts the finale as someone with arrested development lashing out at the world, and ends it as an adult at peace with herself. Eren invited her to indulge in her rage. Armin helped her consider what was truly important. Mikasa healed her and allowed her to let go. All three protagonists were valuable and influential in freeing Ymir.

the hour rate is good but not good enough to actively listen to you talking, let alone feign interest in all of your ramblings yet such attitude never lands him in trouble with you - a coy smirk sent your way every now and then seems to rob you of any grievance

he'd much prefer your apartment but a room at a love hotel isn't half bad either, especially when he's there for a good fuck instead of a heartfelt talk

not that the money stops mattering to him for one night but it feels so good to have you in his arms, away from the eyes of other hosts and patrons of the club, — so much so that for a brief moment he entertains the idea of dropping the price of his company a little if it means meeting you like this more often

he leaves no room for any delusions on your part - you come here to buy a fantasy and he's the one to sell it to you, no genuine feelings behind his words and gestures of affection

sometimes, the benevolence in his texts intensifies and turns ardent the longer you delay going to the club for his company - it's then when you'd wake up to seeing the pics he's sent you - him posing in front of the mirror, his phone covering the most of his body yet just enough to make the tips of your ears burn with desire. no pic caption or a follow-up text whatsoever - it's not needed as you know the implications well enough

his company extending long past the club's grounds, he's a common presence at your apartment, though he doesn't seem to mind that you don't treat him to a stay at a love hotel - considering the frequency of your hook-ups, paying for a room in a love motel every single time the desire gets the better of you would totally ravage you and, more importantly, it'd give hotels the money that by all means should be spent on him

as much as he intends to score points with you for the sake of his benefit, there's one whim he doesn't treat you to - he doesn't let you leave any marks on his body, be it a hickey on his neck or scratches on his back, no matter how in the moment you are. something about his other patrons not seeing the evidence of him being with others, he reasons. his resolve not crumbling against your sweetest and compelling of smiles

doesn't help the hypocrisy as he doesn't hold himself back with your body - checking up on the countless marks peeking under your clothes whenever you come to visit him at the club is one of his favourite things to do, immensely fueling his ego

not that he forced your hand or anything, but a blind, inexplicable urge compels you to pay the club extra and become his exclusive patron - you proudly brandish this fact before him on your next visit, yet it fails to elicit any reaction. it's your money, and he wins either way

well, there is one ploy that he resorts to every now and then, and it's when his glass gets a bit too empty for his liking - with a glint in his eyes he nudges you, dropping a hint that another round would be a welcome idea (you're idea though, not his)

despite the all-too-familiar frequency of this occurrence (for all you know, he practically inhales all of the drinks you buy for him), his charm makes it hard to resist fulfilling his oh-so-subtle request - especially as he shoots that playful grin at you the moment he sees his drink get replenished

he doesn't have to feign his interest in you, the unmoving gaze resting on your features speaks for itself, even more so when you offer him a curt smile (sometimes makes you think if he should be the one paying you for your company)

as you decide to leave, much to his dismay seeing as he'd be deprived of his source of free drinks for the night, he still finds it in him to see you off to the doorstep - trying to look all cool, leaning against the doorframe all the while sloppily making out as the last treat

partly because of the way he carries himself and partly because of his to-kill-for appearance, you decide that it's a shame to spend time with someone like him behind the closed doors of the club (and your apartment on special occasions) thus you pay him to spend time with you during the day - something he's quite excited about, relishing the chance to see you away from the blacklights of the club, and all at your expense

even though you're paying, he still takes the liberty of dragging you into a mall - something about maintaining a delectable appearance, he states matter-of-factly. and not that you would mind, the thought of seeing him in a new outfit the next time you visit him is rather enticing

he is eager to repay the favour though, or as much as one can considering the transactional essence of your relationship, — the next time the two of you venture out, he oh-so-confidently declares that he'll pay for every whim and wish and not the other way around. groundbreaking. there's a sense of glorified glee and twisted pride in his eyes as he says this — both of you are well aware though that the money used for this supposed treat is none other than the funds you had initially spent on him

"healthy" doesn't always mean good in fiction. Eremika's unhealthiness is what makes the ship compelling and interesting. It's built into the core of the story. Also your "healthiest ship" requires ignoring that he emotionally manipulated her into keeping her mouth shut about his genocide plan and threatened to have her memories erased. Historia never expressed any interest in him that way. Men and women can in fact just be friends.

Yes healthy doesn't always mean good, in fact it can actually lead to some very boring ships, but that is still a perfectly good thing to look for in a pairing.

In contrast unhealthy can be interesting, but mostly leads to abusive relationships that get glorified by the fandom in spite of their toxic nature, and in this aspect Eremika is no exception. These two are just awful for one another.

He headbutts her, call her names, tells her he hates her (I know he didn't mean it, but it wrecked her emotionally so my point stands) put her in a situation that could have gotten her killed, never confided in her regarding his plans etc...

She was an overbearing mama who constantly treated him like an incompetent child that couldn't do anything on his own.

What's compelling in a relationship with this dynamic:

"Eren eat your veggies!"

"Eren put on a coat, or you're gonna catch a cold!"

"Eren don't run you're gonna trip!"

She literally deluded herself for years into believing that everything he did was somehow tied back to her. Even Armin, Reiner and Berthold gave her the 🙄 look.

Also her entire character revolves around him and it makes her super boring and robotic. Even after he dies she spends her life worshipping his grave and dies with that gosh darned scarf on her neck. She only took it off once ( when she gave an ounce of development) before cruelly snatching it from the hands of a dying girl that was using it for comfort (something I'll never forgive her for).

She was originally meant to break away from him but alas, good writing died after 134.

Annd the story never revolved around them. Mikasa only became the protagonist in the last chapter out of fucking thin air and it looked soo forced. Lmao Hisu had more parallels with Ymir than Mikasa of all people.

The only time their relationship mattered was at the end of season 2, but after that we got nothing important.

Last thing on this dumpster fire of a ship... They're boring asf.

Like I know some unhealthy relationships that are toxic and all, but the characters have chemistry, and it can make up for the awful shit they can do to eachother. Eremika has no chemistry. I would rather watch paint dry than think about them romantically.

Regarding Erehisu... Have we read the same aot chapter? Or just the same conversation between Eren and Historia? Because I don't think so.

He emotionally manipulated her to keep her mouth shut

What? When did this ever happen? She chose to stay silent. Hell he didn't even need to tell her his plans, it was quite risky, since she could have snitched on him to the Mps and ruined everything.

He chose to confide in her cause he knew she wouldn't tell, cause she was the worst girl in the world who saved him, the girl who chose her selfishness over the world already, in that cave when she saved him, when she told him that she would always be his ally, that they were enemies of humanity.

She never wanted the future that she was destined to if she accepted the 50 year plan. She had accepted it for the greater good. Something selfless that only Christa could have done.

He knew that, and reminded her of who she really was. A selfish, normal girl like everyone else.

She was shocked by the genocide that awaited them if they followed Eren's plan but ultimately chose it over sacrificing herself and her future children. Totally in character, no manipulation involved lmao.

He threatened to erase her memories

Nope. She was upset so he offered to lighten her burden by erasing her memories if she wanted to. It was a proposal made out of empathy for her shock. No threats, where did you see em?

She was never interested in him

Say what you want about her feelings for him, interpret them how you please, but you can't deny a connection from which feelings could blossom. This meme perfectly sums up my thoughts about this:

Man, the concept of the AOT cast becoming cybertronians in their next lives is full of all kinds of storytelling potential! Imagine this:

It's been thousands of years since AOP ended and everyone from Earth 2 is obviously dead. One day, Optimus is on a regular walk through the city when he notices a young triple-changer following him. He tries talking to the little guy, see if they're lost or need help, but he just stare at Optimus with a resting bitch face. Not knowing what else to do, he takes the child someplace safe to talk and gets him a cube of energon. Optimus tries questioning them again, but he only gets one word answers. When asked why he was following Optimus, he just says "dunno" and nothing else. Optimus is already planning on asking the police for help, but something about this kid is ringing a lot of bells in his helm and he doesn't know why. It's not until Optimus watches this young bot pick up a cube of energon from the top instead of the sides like a tea cup without its handle that it click. This bot reminds him of Levi. The resemblance is uncanny, and Optimus brushes it off as a crazy coincidence, but he can't help feel a little bittersweet about this interaction.

Something similar happens to Wheeljack while working on an invention. He's just minding his own business, tinkering with his machine in his lab when someone is suddenly screaming their heads off! He turns around and sees a young intern running around his lab like a kid in a candy store, touching everything and screaming about how amazing it is. Wheeljack gets their attention, tells them to leave since his lab can be dangerous, but that only makes the intern scream like a Kpop fangirl at a Blackpink concert. The random bot then jumps onto Wheeljack, his terrified optics staring into their unhinged optic as they bombard him with a hundred questions. And for some reason, Wheeljack is hit with a wave of nostalgia and yells "human, off!" without realizing it and manages to wrestle them off. After convincing them to calm the frag down, Wheeljack kindly answers as many of their questions as he can and after making them promise to be more careful around his stuff, the two spend the rest of their day messing with explosive chemicals. Wheeljack has no idea why, but he and this werido scientist intern are like two peas in a pot.

I don't know if something like this will be part of your story or not, but this is my little snippet of how a possible unintentional reunion could happen. (Sorry if this is long and not canon to your version!)

The idea of the Survey Corps getting reincarnated as Cybertronians and ultimately finding their way back to Optimus and each other is a rather sweet sentiment, and the idea that Optimus would be the one to identify each and every one of them as they are reborn is such a bittersweet sentiment.

That being said, it is not the plan that I have going forward for AOP. The last few chapters of the main story line is just them wrapping up the main conflict, tying up loose ends. In Between OVA explains everything from Primus' perspective. Unsure if the Hundred Days OVA Poll is going to happen but cross that bridge in a day. And the Wild Life OVA is supposed to be Optimus returning to the AOT world thousands of years later to see the impacts he made on the world.

I'd rather leave the Survey Corps' fates to chance. Let it be an unknown that the audience can speculate. Whatever they chose in their next life, human or Cybertronian, is completely up to them. And letting the audience speculate and come up with ideas is a lot more fun.

I reckon Armin would have had flashes of it, felt so sick, picked up Bertholdt’s lingering guilt, and then been utterly torn between telling Jean and keeping it to himself.

I think Armin and Jean are close, particularly so after their planned kidnapping in season 3. I think Armin has always reminded Jean of Marco, and I think a small part of Jean knows that Armin means a lil more to him because it’s the last shred of Marco that he feels he still has.

Marco and Armin were close. They were both smart, inquisitive, caring individuals that wound up being the ones keeping their chaotic friends in line. He might be short, blond, and lack the freckles Jean loved, but Armin is as close to Marco that Jean has - and Armin knows that too.

After Marco’s death, Armin notices how heavily it’s impacted Jean, and he reaches out. Extends an open line, lets Jean know that he’s there for him if he ever wants to talk - really talk.

After their planned capture in season 3, after Armin kills to save Jean’s life, after Armin’s sacrifice in Shiganshina, he’s torn.

On one hand, Jean was closest to Marco, was the one who took his death the hardest, the one who sees him and mourns him more than anyone else. Jean is the one who keeps Marco’s memory alive, he’s the one that fights the hardest to keep Marco from becoming ‘just another comrade we’ve lost.’

Jean has said “he died all alone, without anyone knowing or seeing.” Armin knows the circumstances of Marco’s death kill Jean, rock him to the core.

Armin knows Jean is the one who deserves to know the truth more than anyone.

But Armin also knows the other side to Jean.

Armin knows Jean feels the weight of every death. He knows Jean wakes at night, hands clamped over his ears. He knows Jean’s sketchbook is full of sketches of Marco, and he knows they’re becoming less and less accurate as time goes on.

He knows Jean would fall into a hole, so to speak, if he found out the truth. He knows Jean would need answers, he knows the fury of it all would compromise Jean in the field.

When they reach the ocean, he almost says something. They aren’t in immediate danger, it’s been over a year, they have their answers. Logically, it would be the best time to say something.

But he sees Jean with Conny and Sasha, sees their smiles, the carefree way they laugh as salt water twists their features. And Armin realises… he can’t do this. He doesn’t have the heart to sit Jean down and explain that his best friend of three years was held down and fed to a titan by three of their fellow cadets-turned-traitors.

Murdered. He can’t tell Jean that Marco was murdered. He just - he can’t do that. It’s hard enough seeing it himself when he closed his eyes, he can’t tell Jean and subject him to that truth.

He doesn’t need to fuel Jean’s nightmares by giving him more context. He isn’t going to be the gasoline to Jean’s trauma-fire.

He can tell the truth when they’re stable again. When Paradis isn’t under threat, when there’s peace and hope. When Jean has the time to heal without fear and uncertainty dancing over their heads.

Then they go to Marley. Then Eren leaves. War is declared. They’re fighting for their lives. Again.

Then Reiner and Annie are honest.

And Armin is reminded why he didn’t tell Jean when fists start flying and Jean ends up in the woods with his hands over his ears.

But he thinks maybe things will be okay, when Jean saves Reiner’s ass as they hang from Eren’s ribcage.

I'm rewatching Attack on Titan with my cousin, who has never seen it, and boy, is it a tripping experience.

I first watched Attack on Titan when it first came out, back in 2013, and now in season 1, there are moments that just physically kick me back in time, back when we knew nothing.

My cousin said, "Are Levi and Mikasa related? They have the same last name," and I was struggling to remember why it wasn't obvious to us back then that there was a connection–

And then it hit me that we didn't know Levi's last name for a while. He does, but we didn't.

I remember the tumblr posts the most; I remember the horse face jokes, and the memes like "dead mom hairstyle" and eren joining the "did nothing wrong squad." I remember the fics with the Levi squad and the huge shipping between Levi and Eren– how Levi always called them gaki/brats and the "characters watch the show" fics. I remember the discourse between people who shipped eremika and those saying "they're siblings," and I remember the live action movie.

During an episode, I saw Levi's name spelled as "Rivaille" and could almost smell the summer air in my childhood bedroom where I watched AoT.

It's so bizarre watching the first season now that everything is over, because at the time, genuinely nobody could have seen it going the way it did. We never thought we'd end up here. All we wanted to know was what was in that goddamn basement.

Even as I have read and watched everything, when I'm back in season one, I just keep quietly wondering to myself...

How did we end up here?

The fact that so many people view what Eren did as something selfless and heroic just blows my mind. He’s become so popular because of this too. Like the amount of people I see that praise him for what he’s done and just misunderstand his character and motivations is crazy even when he outwardly states what he is doing is bad multiple times. So many believe that he just did everything for his friends and in the end he achieved his goal. You have people praising him and then slandering the alliance members for wanting to stop all the death and destruction to save humanity which has been a core theme in all of AOT. It genuinely feels like they’ve watched a whole different anime. Maybe yams wasn’t clear enough for THESE people that what he is doing is wrong?? Isayama did say that he wanted people feel a little sympathetic towards Eren and his actions but like you should have the braincells to still understand he is in the wrong. Idk I just think the misunderstanding of Eren and AOT in general needs to be studied.

It really is bizarre, isn't it?

I don't really know how Isayama could have been any clearer, to be honest. He even made changes to the end of the anime to make it MORE clear that Eren did it for himself, and people still can't see it. Apparently, nothing is ever enough for some people, and it's honestly disturbing how many people just... don't get it, or aren't willing to accept that Eren was just a bad person. It's ironic, because Eren accepts that about himself. He knows he's a bad person. That's where all his self-loathing comes from. Of course we're meant to feel some sympathy for Eren. His very nature destroyed him, and that's a tragedy in and of itself. But we're not meant to feel sympathetic toward his actions, or the reasoning behind his actions, because those actions were entirely selfish in nature. We're meant to understand that a person like Eren should never have wound up with the power he did in the first place. The core message at the heart of the entire story is that when you oppress a group of people, inevitably, someone who shouldn't have power ends up with it. Someone who will use their power for ill. And that's what happened. It's why Reiner says repeatedly that Eren was the last person in the world who should have "ended up with the power of the Coordinate". Reiner recognized that because he saw himself in Eren. He saw that same capacity for evil, for nothing more than selfish gain.

Eren knew what he was doing was wrong, he knew it wasn't justified, and he knew it wouldn't solve anything, and yet you still have people claiming that he did it because he believed it was "the only way" to save his friends. Eren flatly admits, in the end, that that isn't true, when he admits that he knew he would fail to wipe out all of humanity beyond the walls, and yet he still went through with it, and he flatly admits more than once the selfish desire at the core of his actions. He wanted to do it, he wanted to see the sight of a desolate world. His own words are confirmation of it.

The people who slander the alliance for trying to stop a genocide are beyond sick, and I don't even know what to say to people like that. They're seriously delusional. You're right, it probably should be a point of study, lol. To really look at what sort of mental delusion leads to people justifying or excusing genocidal actions.

Knowing His Friends Left Him For Dead All Because He Found Out Something He Shouldn’t Have. And Then Reiner My Darling Reiner Being His Weird Soldier/Teenage Self Has The NERVE To Ask Why Marco Was Being Eaten. Like He Moved On Autopilot And Realized What They Did, What HE Did A Little To Late. Hell, The Titan THE TITAN Stopped Momentarily Because It Too Was Confused. Seeing Jean Find Out What Happened To Him, And Then Beating The Shit Out Of Reiner For What Happened Hurt But At The Same Time…I Was Relieved. basically "they had us (me and my attention and affection) in the first half ngl" the anime

so this fell off enough to no longer be an aots contender for me, HOWEVER... despite the gripes i have with it i still enjoyed it immensely (especially the first half)

what it boils down to is imo it was too ambitious for a 1-cour show. i distinctly remember thinking, when the arc shift happened mid-season, like "wow! it's really ambitious for them to be doing basically two distinct arcs in a 1-cour show? but it's been great so far so it'll be fine!" reader it was not fine

i think if it had had at least 20 episodes they could have made something work, but it feels oddly disjointed. like the ending does feel like it matches the beginning, but the rest of the first half doesn't

at the very start, it absolutely felt to me like the series was heading towards senya in arajin vs ichiya in matakara. and that is where the series did lead us! however the entire first arc felt tonally like a different show entirely, and that was the best and most fun part of the series to me

it almost feels like they set out with this plan, this beginning and this end, but then had SO MUCH FUN writing the first half (because it was so much fun to watch! you could feel the joy in the creation of it too!) that they completely lost sight of their intended ending. then just like. hit the panic button and tried really awkwardly to swerve back on track, which didn't really work for me

(not staying that is what happened, of course, just what it felt like)

anyway the animation at least was consistently on point, especially in the last episode. no complaints about that whatsoever, if mappa had wanted to call this a 25th anniversary project they could have and even with the story issues it has a production quality that they could be proud of (BONES I'M STILL... WTF anyway)

overall an enjoyable watch to me still, i love all the beautifully deranged shitlords in here green guy my beloved arajin my beloved akutaro my beloved MAHOROOOOOOOOO MY BELOVED

tl;dr still fun for me but (again, for me) the first half was way more fun than the second
