Quinlan’s endless inspiration from his grandparents has trickled into his music taste. Big Bands and classic sounds that belong through a gramophone and record player is where he experiences nostalgia, joy and emotions he otherwise hides well from others seeing.
Frank Sinatra - My Way
I planned each charted course Each careful step along the byway And more, much, much more I did it, I did it my way
My Way has many memories attached, from hearing his grandfather sing it as Quinlan was growing up to it being referenced as a motto in regards to business. It became a Kelly’s anthem of sorts, their voices singing into the dark night with drinks in hand and most of all pride.
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
When the band finished playing They howled out for more Sinatra was swinging All the drunks they were singing We kissed on a corner Then danced through the night
Quinlan’s favourite Christmas song is blacklisted for obvious reasons but he still sings it a the top of his lungs in his own home. He has many memories of his family singing along, glasses in the air and swinging in time.
Vera Lynn - We’ll Meet Again
We'll meet again Don't know where Don't know when But I know we'll meet again some sunny day
Quinlan will never play this song purposely but when it plays you will notice his quietness, his attention to the words and a serious expression upon his face. This song has been played at many funerals of family and close friends.
Doris Day - Dream a Little Dream of Me
Birds singing in the sycamore tree Dream a little dream of me Say nighty night and kiss me Just hold me tight and tell me you miss me.
Doris Day is a musical wonder that Quinlan will always listen to when he has the chance. In many ways, his beautiful grandmother looked very similar with perfectly styled blond hair and a glamourous air to her. This song in particular fills Quinlan of memories of the brilliant woman, especially when she would sing it before he went to sleep as a child.
Dean Martin - Ain’t That a Kick in the Head
Like the fella once said, “Ain't love like a kick in the head?” Like the sailor said, quote, "Ain't that a hole in the boat?"
This song has been a big reminder for Quinlan that set backs happen and to keep going. The fact it’s a love song hasn’t ever been the reason why he likes it so much. He sees it as a song about perseverance.
Bobby Darin - Somewhere Beyond the Sea
It's far beyond the stars It's near beyond the moon I know beyond a doubt My heart will lead me there soon
Another love song that Quinlan takes no notice of it’s literal meaning. ‘She’ in this song references Ireland, a place Quinlan feels in his bones as home just like New York. He always plays this when he’s missing rainy Dublin and always pours an Irish whiskey to toast his roots.
Dion - The Wanderer
Oh well I roam from town to town I go through life without a care 'Til I'm as happy as a clown With my two fists of iron and I'm going nowhere
While the lyrics do not speak to Quinlan, it has been sung at many birthdays and private family events. He remembers a particular chaotic evening that this song was playing while they were raided.
Perry Como - As Time Goes By
It's still the same old story, a fight for love an' glory, A case of do or die, the world will always welcome lovers, As time goes by...
One of Quinlan’s personal favorites that take him right back to being a boy with his grandparents. He has fond memories of seeing them slowdance with one another. Although, there is a darker memory attached which has left Quinlan avoiding this song for most of his adulthood. His grandmother sung it at his grandfather’s funeral.
Etta James - Sunday Kind of Love
I do my Sunday dreaming, oh, yeah And all my Sunday scheming Every minute, every hour, every day
Quinlan is very vocal about his love for Etta James but Sunday Kind of Love is his personal favourite. The song is about a lasting relationship which is something Quinlan prefers over fleeting or casual affairs. He comes from a long line of men and women who have never been divorced or had marital problems, and that has been something he wishes for himself.
The Penguins - Earth Angel
Earth angel, Earth angel, the one I adore Love you for ever, and ever more. I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you.
Despite being a love song, this song was actually dedicated to the German Sherpard that Quinlan had growing up named Angel. In fact, most of the Kelly’s would sing this song to the pooch as a puppy and a fully grown canine that was trained to kill.

A Choices: The Royal Romance Dark AU fanfiction.
A/N Other than my few Bloodbound shorts, I’ve never written anything with supernatural overtones before. After receiving requests to see Liam and Riley’s story if he was a vampire, this storyline was born. Since it is set in one of my favorite books from Pixelberry, I had to include as many of the main and supporting characters as I could. The following chapters will explain more where they and what our main characters are. Not going to lie, I am very anxious to step out of my comfort zone for this, but I’m also super excited to see how it goes. Along with The Royal Romance, I will be referencing and altering both The Crown and The Flame and The Royal Masquerade.

Prologue
Once upon a time...
"Father!" Zenobia rushed down the stairwell. "Kenna is at the gates!"
King Luthor's frown deepened as he studied the places his troops had been destroyed. His hope to unite the five kingdoms and wipe off the abomination was for naught.
Kenna would not stop until he and his surviving offspring's heads were on pikes.
...until their blood filled the crystal goblets of the Dark Queen.
"What do we do?" His son, Diavolos, asked.
Luthor knew it was only himself Kenna wanted. After he had killed her mother, hoping to stop the monsters once and for all, Kenna would have her revenge.
If only he had known that she was a vampire...just like her mother.
"Listen carefully." His voice trembled at this possibly being the last time he was able to speak to his son and daughter. "A Nevarkis must always be ready to fight the creatures that prey on the weak and vulnerable."
"But..." Zenobia sniffed. "How? How can we possibly kill the unkillable?"
"She can be killed just like her mother before her." Luthor snapped. "Sunlight. A dagger to the heart. Cutting the head off." His features hardened with resolve. "Know that those are our true allies. Continue your training with daggers. Never stop being vigilant. Educate your children. And remember: where there's one vampire, many more lie in wait in the shadows."
Diavolos stepped forward and gripped his father's shoulder. "We will fight for you."
"No." Luthor corrected. "Fight for our people. The innocent. Fight for a chance to live without fear of monsters."
He cleared his throat. "If I should die--"
"Don't say that!" Zenobia screeched. "We'll be--"
"Kenna is coming for me." Luthor interrupted. "I know I must face the consequences of my actions."
"But--" Divalos lowered his head. "What are we to do?"
"Kill her." Luthor ordered. "Let your emotion be your strength." He took their hands. "And remember that a vampire is nature's evil incarnate. They will do whatever they want and kill anyone who they think is in their way." His voice turned to pleading. "Kill Kenna before she has a chance to kill you."
Zenobia nodded in a jerky manner. Diavolos swallowed with tears in his eyes.
"Good. Now prepare yourselves." Luthor pulled his sword from its sheath. "The devil herself is here."

Two years later...
Kenna cuddled her infant son, humming a lullaby.
Dom came in, a soft smile gracing his lips at the sight of his family.
"How are we this evening?" He asked, placing a kiss first on her lips then one on his son's forehead.
"A little fussy." Kenna explained. "But otherwise perfect."
"Good." Dom stretched then went to stoke the fire. "I will be going out later tonight."
Kenna's head jerked up. "Why? Are there more rumors?"
He nodded, a determined frown formed on his lips. "The Nevarkis brats refuse to let us live in peace." He moved to stand before the window that looked out toward the kingdom he had once lived in.
High in the mountains, the couple and those like them had found sanctuary. They built a kingdom, one of darkness and shadow that allowed them to live freely. He and Kenna were crowned the rulers, chosen by their people...those that were cursed as monsters.
"Si and I will be standing guard." He explained. "I will not risk you or our child."
"Dom..." Kenna pulled him close, capturing his lips in a long tender kiss. "This must end. I was foolish to let my need for revenge take over." Tears sparkled in her eyes. "Luthor might have left us alone if I had given him a chance."
Dom's face contorted into furious hatred. "A Nevarkis can never be trusted!" He gripped her waist, hands heating as he lost his temper. "He would have plunged a dagger into your heart the first chance he had."
"Dom." She said softly when he singed her clothes.
He wrenched his hands from her with a grimace. "I didn't burn you, did I?"
She shook her head. "I'm fine." She tried to lighten the mood. "Just a little overheated."
He took deep breaths to get himself under control. "Stay here where it is safe." His eyes searched hers. "Have you fed recently?"
"No, but I should be fine until you return." Kenna lifted a bottle with blood for their son. "I can call on one of the servants to help me if I need to."
"Promise me you won't go outside." He pleaded.
"Only if you promise to come back to me." She responded.
His lips quirked in that cocky smile she has always adored.
"Always, my queen." He kissed her once more, then slipped out the door to search out their enemies.

Present Day New York...
"Cordonia...land of both beauty and mystery." Riley wrinkled her nose. "Boring."
"No, it isn't." Hana argued. "I think that is the perfect beginning."
"Look at the comments from our last video." Riley swiveled her laptop so her friend could see. "People love our walkthroughs and all but hate my narration."
"Well..." Hana's brow furrowed. "Maybe we should try to add more to it than just narration." She pulled out some sketches. "We could add some animation of the history before showing our footage of the country."
"That might work." Riley mumbled, tapping her pen against her notebook.
The two set to work planning their next project.
After years of trying, they had finally achieved their dream of traveling for a living. The two college friends had taken every class they could on how to make their hopes into a reality. With Riley's love of history and business and Hana's talent with art and fashion, the pair had created a successful travel channel that showcased rarely visited countries and cities around the world.
Hana took care of all the shopping and dining found at their chosen destinations. Her "day trips" were hailed as must see for anyone planning a vacation. Riley took over for what could be found at night. Myths and legends blended in with what could be discovered once the sun set. A place's nightlife was thoroughly researched and reached a wide variety of their audience, causing many to plan a vacation just on her recommendations alone.
"Did your mom suggest where we should go first?" Riley asked, after skimming the same few articles about the elusive country.
"Not really." Hana hedged.
Riley glanced up. "Is she giving you a hard time again?"
"Yes." Hana slumped in her chair. "She told me to call when I was done playing tour guide."
"Geez." Riley grumbled. "Does she not realize that we have created a legit business?"
"Ladies shouldn't be involved in anything that does not pertain to their husband and family." Hana quoted. "I was supposed to have my debut to Cordonian society last year." Angry tears filled her eyes. "She still hasn't forgiven me for missing out on the Masquerade Ball."
Riley wrapped her in a comforting hug. "I'm sorry."
Hana patted her back. "Don't be. I finally feel like I can accomplish anything."
"That's because you can." Riley sat back with a grin. "Especially with planning out what we should focus on first."
Hana giggled as she went to search out some of her old books she had inherited from her grandparents. "These might help you with your part."
Riley's eyebrows lifted over the titles. "The Crown, the Flame, and The Night Queen."
"That is the earliest recorded story of vampires and monsters in Cordonia." Hana explained. "Queen Kenna Rhys and King Luthor Nevarkis both fought over uniting the kingdoms that make up Cordonia." She shook her head in disbelief. "There is a legend that Queen Kenna was a vampire that married a man who could transform into a dragon."
"For real?" Riley eagerly opened the book. "What happened?"
"Luthor died." Hana reached for another history book. "Some say it was a sword fight while others say she ripped his throat out with her fangs."
"Whoa. Either way, she sounds pretty epic."
"His son got revenge though." Hana flipped to another chapter. "He sneaked in one day and supposedly dragged Kenna into the sunlight. Before her husband could save her, she burned to ash."
"Brutal." Riley shivered. "What did the dragon do?"
Hana shrugged. "Supposedly he left with their child to protect him." She pointed at some drawings rendered from the Dark Ages. "Kenna's son came back to extract revenge. He eliminated one entire side of the Nevarkis family tree."
"And let me guess," Riley picked up another book. "The remaining Nevarkis's struck back?"
"It's supposedly been a feud for centuries between the Nevarkis and the Rhys' families." Hana pulled up an image on her phone. "Though one is currently ruling Cordonia."
Riley studied the image. "Queen Olivia Nevarkis. Looks like the Rhys lost the throne."
Hana shrugged. "There's a myth that they still rule Cordonia from the shadows."
"Mythical royal vampires, huh?" Riley laughed at the thought. "I hope I bump into one just so I can figure out who's really in charge."
Hana giggled at the thought. "You would be the only person to ask a logical, government question instead of the usual, whoa you're a real live vampire!"
Riley threw a pillow at her. "Hey! I can be calm and collected when faced with the unknown."
Hana threw the pillow back. "Tell that to the supposed haunted house we visited on our last trip." She broke out into laughter with Riley's defense that squeaking doors were the true villains. "On that note, I'm going to start packing. Our flight leaves first thing in the morning."
"I'll be ready." Riley promised.
Once alone, she flipped to a more current timeline of the supposed Dark Kingdom.
King Constantine Rhys the Third rules over what is his rightful kingdom. Rumors swirl that he is simply biding his time until he can eliminate the usurper, Queen Olivia Nevarkis, First of Her Name. The people know that one day, a Rhys will sit upon the throne, uniting the Dark Kingdom and Cordonia once and for all.

Cordonia's Royal Palace, 2 a.m.
"Heeeerah! Olivia threw her daggers as hard as she could while doing a roundhouse kick.
The blades struck into the chest, head, and groin of the makeshift dummy.
She brushed the few strands of red hair that had escaped her hair clip out of her eyes. With a great deal of scrutiny, she studied her dagger placement.
"The one to the head needs to go deeper."
She spun around with a start at that all too familiar voice.
"You're late." She folded her arms and tapped her foot.
Liam rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry. Had to stop off for a quick bite."
Olivia rolled her eyes. "That's not funny."
"Not that kind of bite." He teased, holding up a styrofoam box.
"Oh." She blinked in surprise. "I forget that you enjoy normal food too."
He chuckled at that. "There are certain foods that I don't think any man could ever give up."
Olivia decided to ignore that as she wiped the sweat from her face and neck. "Now that you're here, let's get the formalities over with."
"Very well." Liam gestured toward her. "You may go first."
She sat down on a bench lining one side of the palace gym. She motioned for him to join her.
"Not you!" She hissed when she saw his all too familiar guard.
Drake Walker bristled at her tone. His brown eyes clashed with her green.
"Give us a moment, please." Liam asked him.
"Don't let your guard down." Drake warned. "Remember, she's a Nevarkis."
Olivia tensed. "Perhaps you should remember what happened the last time you said something like that."
She quirked one eyebrow at the man and felt a sense of glee when he winced in memory.
His hand automatically drifted to his side where one of her daggers had once struck true.
With a quick bow to Liam, Drake stepped back out into the hallway.
Liam shook his head. "Are you two ever going to get along?"
"Stop talking stupid." Olivia snapped. "Now then, as you know...I must have my revenge."
"I know." Liam folded his arms and leaned casually against a column.
She eyed him for any sign of hatred.
It drove her crazy how unvampiric he could be.
He seemed almost human.
He seemed...kind.
A vampire is nature's evil incarnate. You can never trust a Rhys.
Those words had been drummed into her skull by her parents and then her aunt after their deaths by Constantine's hand.
And yet...Liam had done the unthinkable.
He had actually been a friend to Olivia.
*************
The night after her parents' funeral, five year old Olivia had been sitting alone before the fireplace, weeping over them.
Her aunt had left her to deal with her own grief and to plan the next attack upon Constantine.
As she searched for a tissue, Olivia jumped back with a shriek at the little blonde haired boy that held the Kleenex box.
His eyes were filled with unshed tears as he handed her a tissue.
"Who are you?" She asked, remembering that a Nevarkis must always be brave.
"I'm Liam." He explained. "I wanted to...I wanted to tell you I'm sorry about your parents." He sniffed and took a tissue for himself. "My mom died too."
Olivia blinked and took a cautious step forward. "Are you...are you a vampire?!"
He nodded.
She whipped out the dagger her mother had given her and rushed at him.
Liam moved faster than she could comprehend, gently keeping her hand above her head.
"Let go of me, monster!" She ordered. "You're why I'm all alone!"
"I didn't do anything." He told her, anguish taking over his handsome features. "I don't want to hurt you or anyone."
"Liar!" She snapped. "That's what you do. Lie and kill." Her tears ran faster down her cheeks. "And now you'll kill me."
"I won't." He promised. "I swear I won't hurt you." He ignored his own tears trickling down his cheeks. His blue eyes burned with resolve. "My mother made me promise never to hurt a human."
Olivia shook her head. It had to be lies. Isn't that what vampires and monsters do? Lull you into letting your guard down so that they could have an easy kill.
"Your father will pay for what he did." She said, hoping to see his true, evil nature. "He must die!"
"I know." Liam slowly released her and took a step back.
Olivia watched in surprise as he sat down before her fireplace and pulled out a silk blue ribbon from his pocket.
He motioned for her to join him.
She slowly lowered herself down, dagger poised in her little fist in case he made a move.
"May I have your hand, please?" He asked.
He patiently waited on her to decide whether or not to give it to him.
She tentatively placed her hand in his.
His lips turned up into a relieved smile as he wrapped the ribbon over their joined hands.
"What are you doing?" She asked, lowering her dagger.
"Making a bond." He explained. "I, Liam Rhys, Crown Prince of the Dark Kingdom, promise to never seek out revenge and to end all vendettas against the Nevarkis family." His blue eyes held her green. "Just as my mother, Queen Eleanor wanted me to."
Oliva's lips parted. "You mean it?"
"I do." Liam's voice held a great deal of sincerity. "I would rather walk into the sun than not do as she asked."
"Oh." Olivia sniffed. She could understand that kind of devotion.
"Do you," Liam's cheeks colored. "Do you think we can be allies?"
"A Nevarkis will never be friends with a monster." She repeated the rhetoric that she knew by heart.
"But," Liam's shoulders slumped. "We're not all bad."
"All monsters are bad at heart."
"I'm not." He pouted. "I don't want to be."
"You're so weird." She muttered.
"Am not." Liam grumbled. "I hope I'm not."
Olivia looked down at their hands still bound together. "I guess since you promised something, I should too."
He didn't bother to hide his surprise.
She stuck her tongue out at him. "I, Olivia Nevarkis, The Crown Princess of Cordonia, swear that after I kill Constantine Rhys, I will lay down my weapons." Her brow furrowed. "I'll pick them back up though if you or any other monster tries anything."
Liam's smile grew. Before she could react, he tugged her into a quick hug.
"Now we can be friends!" He cheered.
"Friends?" She shook her head. "I'm a Nevarkis and you're a Rhys. We can't be friends."
"We will be." He vowed, jumping to his feet. "I have to go before Father finds out I've sneaked out. I'll try to come back in a few nights."
Olivia didn't have a chance to tell him whether or not she wanted him to. In the blink of an eye, he had jumped from her balcony and was already out the palace gates.
*****************
That had been the beginning of Liam's visits. Through the years, he had remained true to his promise. He did all he could to befriend her and never tried to sway her from seeking vengeance.
Olivia had once asked him how he could take her threat against his father so easily.
He had merely shrugged, explaining that he knew it was the way of things. His father had killed both her parents, while he had only lost one. He hoped she didn't since he did not wish to see his father or her dead.
Olivia had then told him again how weird he was, bringing another smile to his lips.
And now here he was again, calmly taking her promised vengeance well.
"So what business brings you here tonight?" She asked.
"Father thinks it is time I chose a wife." Liam responded. "I thought you should know that I will be spending more time in your kingdom to find one."
Olivia shot up off the bench. "What? But you promised to never hurt a human!"
"And I will keep true to that." He explained.
"But..." Olivia's brow furrowed. "You'll turn her into a vampire."
"Only if she wishes it." Liam explained. "I won't force her to make such a decision."
"I see." She began to pace while thinking. "You'll have vampire children."
"Only if she's a vampire." He reminded her. "Remember my brother."
Olivia paused. She had forgotten about Leo Rhys, The Great Disappointment of the Dark Kingdom. His mother had begged Constantine not to turn her. It had never been asked before, and in his mercy he had agreed. That was when they all discovered that a monster and a human could only produce a human child. In order for the heir to the Dark Kingdom to be a vampire, both parents had to be the same being.
"And you'll be fine having human children?" She asked. "If you're chosen bride refuses the Vampire's Kiss?"
"Of course." He responded.
"Lord, you're so weird." She muttered.
His smirk flashed. "Let's hope the woman I choose doesn't think so."
"Are there no women in your kingdom you can choose from?" She asked.
"I've looked." He shook his head. "It's hard to explain, but if one doesn't have an arranged marriage, then we must search until we see the one meant for us."
"And you somehow got weirder." She brushed her hands down her pants and held one out to him. "Good luck, I suppose."
"Thank you." He grasped her hand and lifted it to his lips. "I'll keep you updated on my progress."
"There's no need."
"Of course there is." He winked at her on his way out. "We're friends."
Her lips parted to once again remind him that they couldn't be. For some reason, she decided not to say it.
Liam had somehow wormed his way into her life and had become the closest friend she had ever had.

The Lee Residence, Shanghai, China...
Lorelei paled as she reread the report.
It cant be. Not Now!
Of all the times for this to happen, it would be when her stubborn, foolish daughter decided to visit.
Given the nature of her relationship with Hana, she knew that there was no way she could convince her to postpone her trip to Cordonia.
There was only one course of action left to take. She would have to call the one man who was capable of protecting her daughter. She would promise hiim anything as long as he kept Hana out of Liam’s clutches. As much as wanted her to give up this ridiculous hobby she called a job and settled down with the right sort of man, she would never put her in the path of becoming the next vampire queen.
Setting down the packet of information from one of her informants, she checked to make certain no servant was out in the hallway and then searched for the needed phone number.
Taking a deep breath, she placed the call.
Her trepidation grew when he didn’t immediately answer.
"Hello."
"Lord Beaumont?"
"Yes." She could hear a door closing in the background. "Who is this?"
"Lorelei Lee." She replied.
"Lady Lorelei." He responded with a recognition. "How can I help you?"
"My daughter and her friend have got it in their heads to come visit Cordonia." She began. "I'm not certain how long they intend to stay, but I was hoping that I could retain your services."
"For what exactly?" Lord Beaumont asked.
"Protection." She replied. "I have heard through certain channels that the dark prince is beginning to search for a bride." She took a deep breath. "We do NOT want our daughter anywhere near that vile creature."
"I understand." He replied. "I usually don't do personal security. With my brother, Bertrand, retired," he hesitated, "it is left up to me to help protect Cordonia's borders."
"My husband and I would be in your debt if you could watch over her in the evenings." Lorelei cajoled. "I've heard that your brother is planning on extending his vineyards. We would be more than happy to invest in the production and distribution of his sparkling wine. Perhaps even let it be the only sparkling wine we serve in our hotels."
"Send me her information and picture. Call her and tell her that since our family is an old friend of yours, that I've volunteered to show them around. Find out where she's staying and when she plans on arriving."
"Oh thank you, my lord. We--"
"I'll also need a contract prepared and signed for all that you offered." He added.
"Yes of course. I'll get everything to you at once." She promised.
Once he ended the call, she sank back down onto her chair.
She bowed her head and began to pray that her daughter came to no harm these next few weeks. To lose Hana to one of the many creatures that roamed the night in Cordonia was too horrible to even contemplate.
If anyone could keep her daughter safe then it was none other than Lord Maxwell Beaumont.

Dear Mr. Filoni: About Qui-Gon Jinn
Mr. Filoni, I know you are pretty much the undisputed Padawan of George Lucas, but like many students they can sometimes misunderstand their teachings or interpret things from a certain point of view. While I won’t deny you are a brilliant creator who have brought us some amazing Star Wars content you said something a little while back about Qui-Gon Jinn that I think is rather nearsighted and in my opinion incorrect.
“And with the death of Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin loses the father figure who truly could have understood him – and maybe prevented what was to come.”
This implies several things, the first is that Anakin never had a father figure in his life. Or, rather that he lost the father figure he truly needed. In many ways this is implying that if someone grows up without a father (or a traditional father figure) then they are missing out or won’t have a stable childhood. What about all the people who are raised by single mothers or grandparents or aunts/uncles or by their older siblings?
Pixar’s Onward is a great example of finding a father figure through an older brother, it highlights that just because Ian never had a chance to meet his father didn’t mean that he lost out on a father figure in his brother Barley.
“I never had a dad, but I always had you.”
Tumblr media
Saying that Anakin lost the father figure who truly could have understood him also just spits in the face of a young man who also lost his father figure in that moment and gave up everything to raise Anakin.
Let’s unpack that a little bit. Imagine if you will you’re twenty-five years old, you’ve worked your ENTIRE life for a particular goal which is to be a Jedi Knight, traveling the galaxy doing the most good that you can while discovering who you are on your own. Then maybe down the road when you are ready to settle down and possibly train/raise an apprentice you’ll take one on. Suddenly the only father you’ve ever known pushes you aside for a child he’s just met (without even discussing it with you first) and then uses his last words to push this child on you, making him your responsibility, thus shattering your chance at the freedom of a true Knighthood.
Tumblr media
By all rights Obi-Wan could’ve given Anakin’s training over to the Council, the boy was in no way his responsibility. Much like an adult sibling doesn’t have to take on the responsibility of raising their minor siblings if their parents die, they could give the children over to the state and have a chance at a normal young adulthood instead of being thrust into being a parent before they are ready. But, Obi-Wan didn’t do that because he A.) Respected/loved Qui-Gon too much not to fulfill his final wishes, and B.) Knew it would be better for Anakin to take the boy under his wing.
I will say this until I am blue in the face: OBI-WAN WAS A FATHER TO ANAKIN!!
In fact, in Episode 2 Anakin refers to him as a father/father figure multiple times and it is clear their relationship while Anakin was a Padawan was that of a Father/Son. It isn’t until Anakin is knighted and they are peers that you see their relationship shift to that of brothers.
Tumblr media
Am I saying that Obi-Wan didn’t make mistakes when raising Anakin? Absolutely not, but would I argue that Anakin was missing out on a father figure because Qui-Gon died? No, I would not.
The second part of that quote claims that Qui-Gon Jinn could’ve been someone who understood Anakin and might’ve been able to prevent what was to come. I 100% believe that would not have happened, while I think Qui-Gon Jinn is a very interesting character there is no indication in either canon or legends that he would’ve been a good influence on Anakin. In fact, quite the opposite. Here are the top ten reasons Qui-Gon would’ve been a terrible father influence for Anakin:
1. Qui-Gon Jinn thinks the rules don’t apply to him: While many fans applaud Qui-Gon (including apparently you, Mr. Filoni) for going against the Jedi Council and being a “Maverick” I would argue that more often than not it was to his or his mission’s detriment. This is not to advocate that the Council was 100% correct or that Jedi shouldn’t question things, but there is a difference between questioning authority figures and flat out being obstinate. This is something Anakin excels at even with being raised by the rule abiding Kenobi, imagine how bad it would’ve been had Jinn raised him.
Tumblr media
2. Qui-Gon Jinn was selfish: There are several examples of Qui-Gon using the guise of “the will of the Force” in order to get his way. Are we honestly supposed to believe that somehow this one man was more in tune with the Force than any other Jedi (including 12 powerful Jedi who were on the Council)?? And, if he truly believed in following the will of the Force then why did he constantly bend the rules to make sure the “Force” went his way - an example of this is had he actually believed it was the will of the Force that he free Anakin, he wouldn’t have had to make the chance cube go the way he wanted it to go. He flat out cheated so he could get his way.
3. Qui-Gon was dangerously reckless: Many Jedi are reckless, even Obi-Wan said to Yoda in ESB “so was I if you’ll remember”. But Qui-Gon was reckless in ways that was pretty astounding. For example, EVERYONE told him that his plan to get off of Tatooine was dangerous and frankly stupid. Couldn’t they have just sold the Naboo ship and then purchased a clunker that would get them to Coruscant? Honestly, that would’ve probably hidden them better from the Trade Federation in the long run...but no, he instead decided the best course of action was to put a slave child in mortal danger, thus also placing all of their lives in the hands of a boy who had NEVER won a race before. Now, it ended up working in his favor, but even still those few days spent fixing up Anakin’s pod and then the race itself delayed the Queen from getting to Coruscant which meant more people died on Naboo all because Qui-Gon refused to see any other solutions.
Tumblr media
4. Qui-Gon was often a bully: our Maverick had no problems throwing his weight around to get what he wanted. The Council meeting with Anakin is a perfect example, he didn’t get the answer he wanted. So he put his hands on his hips and refused to leave the room until the Council caved to his demands. Another example of this is in Claudia Grey’s Master & Apprentice where he refuses to do his duty as a Jedi and fulfill the mission simply because he had a vision. He doesn’t discuss this with the Council or with Obi-Wan beforehand, he just decides for himself this is how it’s going to be and then throws a hissy-fit when he doesn't get his way. Or how about he is the one who cheated to get his way in winning Anakin and when Watto calls him out he threatens to get the Hutts involved? He just bullies his way to getting what he wanted.
Tumblr media
  5. Qui-Gon never saw the bigger picture: Master Jinn’s whole thing is to focus on the here and the now, and while that’s great advice (especially for Obi-Wan who often looks too far a head) it also means that Qui-Gon often misses the big picture. An example of this is in the book Master & Apprentice where he wants to free the slaves on Pijal’s moon, but Yoda has to remind him that there is a bigger picture and they can only act if it’s in their mandate. He says this not because the Council doesn’t want to free slaves, but because there are incredibly complex consequences and if they were to just do whatever they wanted/could do as Jedi it would cause all kinds of issues for others and while he could maybe free a handful of slaves now it would cause countless others to suffer in the long run. But, Qui-Gon wouldn’t accept this, because he refused to see the bigger picture - he refused to look at anything except what was right in front of him.
6. Qui-Gon has a history of failing his Apprentices: Now, I know this isn’t Canon at the moment, but by the time we make it to TPM Qui-Gon has already done severe damage to 2 former Padawans, and is in danger of having history repeat itself. Xanatos was his second Apprentice right before Obi-Wan, and this Padawan was extremely powerful and Qui-Gon insisted he be trained, but the boy fell to the darkside because he had been too old to start training and had a healthy attachment to his family (sound familiar?). Qui-Gon was so devastated by his fall that he went back and reputed his first apprentice, Feemor, claiming he was such a failure of a Master that there is no way his first apprentice should’ve been knighted. He basically in his grief pushed aside an apprentice who while on paper wasn’t anything special, but was kind and dutiful and a true Jedi (sound familiar?). He then begrudgingly takes on Obi-Wan (only after 12 year old Obi-Wan offers to kill himself to save others) and then time and time again tries to basically pawn off Obi-Wan onto someone else (even as far into their relationship as the Master & Apprentice book). Then, when it finally looks like the Kenobi/Jinn team have figured out how to work well together Qui-Gon has to literally be reminded that his Obi-Wan even exists because Qui-Gon is so blinded by Anakin’s power!! How in any way does this seem like a better father figure option for the emotionally needy Anakin?
7. Qui-Gon Jinn has a history of Attachments: The specific example I have is again from Legends, but it shows how Qui-Gon allowed attachments to become dangerous. He had a childhood friend who he fell in love with, they decided that they could handle being committed to each other as well as the Order so they “pledged themselves” to one another (my guess is basically this is like a Jedi marriage so to speak). Sounds beautiful right, and it is, but...But his love interest Tahl was injured on a war torn planet where the children are so sick of their parents' civil war that they form a third army and go to war against the adults. Tahl is caught in the middle of this and is gravely injured. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are sent to rescue her, and Obi-Wan is sickened by the sight of children fighting and wants to stay and help, but Qui-Gon is so blinded by his attachment for Tahl that he for the first time EVER actually follows his mandate and tells Obi-Wan that they weren’t sent there to help the children, but to rescue Tahl. Obi-Wan who is only 13 doesn’t understand so instead of taking the time to really explain it, Qui-Gon just LEAVES his young apprentice behind on a war torn planet. Now, I’ll admit that Qui-Gon did give Obi-Wan a choice, to come back to Coruscant or to stay and fight, thus leaving the Jedi Order and Obi-Wan did make the choice to stay. But, it was Qui-Gon’s responsibility as the teacher to fully explain the situation to Obi-Wan and let him know that they could do more good if they were to go back to the Council and the Senate and try to return with supplies and reinforcements. But no, Qui-Gon just yelled at him, disregarded his feelings and told him their mission was to rescue Tahl. He didn’t bother using this as a teaching moment for Obi-Wan because he was so concerned about his attachment. And then later when Tahl actually died, Qui-Gon nearly fell to the dark side and it was Obi-Wan who saved him.  And then Qui-Gon went on to decide that because of the pain that had been inflicted by losing Tahl he’d basically give Obi-Wan an ultimatum when it came to the woman he loved (and basically downplayed it as nothing but a crush). Now, say what you want about how Obi-Wan handled Anakin/Padme’s relationship - maybe pretending it wasn’t happening instead of confronting Anakin about it wasn’t a healthy/smart choice, but at least he didn’t downplay it and make it look like Anakin’s feelings weren’t real or valid.
8. Qui-Gon refused to apologize: There are several examples where Qui-Gon refuses to accept any responsibilities and won’t apologize. One such point is in TPM where he basically traded his current Padawan in for a newer/shinier model in front of the entire Council (which if this alone isn’t enough cause to prove the man wasn’t the best father figure…) he then refused to even approach Obi-Wan about it, in fact the twenty five year old Apprentice who had just been tossed aside for a supposed prophecy came and apologized to Qui-Gon!! Another example is back in the Jedi Apprentice books where Qui-Gon leaves Obi-Wan on the war torn planet (as mentioned in #7) it is up to Obi-Wan to make it up to Qui-Gon and prove his worth once again. I’m not certain given Anakin’s tendency to need constant affirmations that this would’ve been a good combination.
Tumblr media
9. Qui-Gon was manipulative: Oftentimes we see Qui-Gon manipulating people to get his way (I’m not talking about Jedi Mind Tricks). In TPM he manipulates Watto to win Anakin’s freedom, he even manipulates Obi-Wan into taking on the burden of training Anakin by making it his dying wish. He is not above manipulation if he gets his desired result. We see Anakin does the same thing, so one could argue Qui-Gon would’ve only encouraged this behavior.
Tumblr media
10. Qui-Gon cared more about the prophecy than the boy: I’m not saying that Qui-Gon didn’t care about people, or even Anakin, in fact he was a very compassionate character. But, all of his arguments to have Anakin be trained was that he is “the Chosen One” not once does he talk about how the boy needs training simply because it’d be dangerous to leave such raw power alone in the galaxy without training, or that it would be the right thing to do. He doesn’t ever talk about how learning to be a Jedi would actually benefit the boy. Every single time he brings up Anakin needing training is because of the prophecy. Now, as far as it looks in both canon and legends Obi-Wan tried incredibly hard to not bring up the prophecy to Anakin (except on Mustafar), Obi-Wan would bring it up to Mace/Yoda but that was about it. Obi-Wan wasn’t blinded by the prophecy because until ROTS it didn’t really appear that he even believed in it - he believed in Anakin for who he was as a person. Something we just didn’t see with Qui-Gon.
Tumblr media
Now, Qui-Gon has a lot of great qualities, I am not denying that, but to say that he would’ve been the father figure Anakin needed is just misguided. If you believe in the idea that there is a will of the Force one could argue that Obi-Wan training Anakin was that will, otherwise Qui-Gon wouldn’t have died.
Also, Mr. Filoni, why is it that Anakin supposedly suffered because he didn’t have a father figure yet you turned around and gave Ahsoka a brother, not a father? Are you suggesting Ahsoka suffered as well because she didn’t have a father figure? Or, was Obi-Wan by this time finally “old” enough to be considered a father figure?
Tumblr media
This idea that Qui-Gon Jinn would’ve been the fix it to Anakin’s issues is just silly and once again places the blame of the Jedi’s destruction in the hands of the Council and specifically Obi-Wan, thus not forcing Anakin to be held responsible for any of his actions.
I’m sorry, but it’s not a theory I buy due to a lack of evidence.

Here’s a one-shot fanfic from me, still on Legend of Korra.
- Lin/Tenzin, pre-LOK AU
- One-shot, completed
- Length: Approx 8.9k
Overview:
As far as the Earth Kingdom is concerned, Lin Beifong is in a relationship with the son of the Avatar.
No, not that one.
 ---
Lin could not believe that they managed to pull it off.
It has been a week since she arrived at Ba Sing Se. So far, it has gone well.
She towel-dried her hair as she moved around the room to get ready. The metalbender has just finished her shower right after coming home from training with the Dai Li.
Lin had always wanted to train with them. She felt that, aside from her mother, they would be a good source of learning different earthbending styles.
As expected, her grandmother Poppy was more than unwilling to have her train – for what good man would indeed wish to be with a brutish young lady like her. On the other hand, Toph Beifong was quite supportive but was hesitant on the grounds that it might hinder her progress with the police force.
Ever the people-pleaser as her pestering sister described her, Lin struggled to come to a solution that would hopefully meet all their concerns. By some fortunate coincidence, someone swooped in with a proposal, which she accepted after weighing the pros and cons.
Sliding into a long deep scarlet dress, Lin quickly pinned up her hair and applied lip stick.  It would simply not do for one of the ladies of the Noble House of Beifong to be seen unkempt.
This was the concession of her temporary move to Ba Sing Se: train with the Dai Li by day - attend society events at night.
It was enough to satisfy both her mother and grandmother. Toph hated these events expected from the current head of the Beifong family. Having Lin attend to it in her stead works for both of them - Toph gets to stay in Republic City and Lin gets to show her family (and the world) that she is highly capable in navigating these events. This way, no one need worry about the Beifongs not being recognized within the Earth Kingdom.
There was a knock at the door. Lin took one last look in the mirror and went to open it.
To add to her advantage, showing up with a date every time for these events keeps possible entanglements at bay.
“You look wonderful, Lin.”
After all, what better way to repel unwanted admirers than showing up at the arm of the Avatar’s son?
“Thanks, you look good too, Bumi.”
 ---
Tenzin unfolded the letter.
This was the address, he confirmed, standing in front of a tall nondescript gate, blocking the view and entrance to a residence in the Middle Ring in Ba Sing Se.
He rang the bell and waited.
The airbender shifted his bag from shoulder to shoulder, his robes billowing in the wind but interestingly not drawing attention from any passersby. He figured it was a good call to leave Oogi at the Air Temple and take a train to the Earth Kingdom instead, less commotion and less accommodations needed. He did not want to unnecessarily impose on others after all.
Tenzin was at the last leg of his travels and it happened to be a stop at the Earth Kingdom, specifically at Ba Sing Se University. Initially having thought that only minimal information documenting the Air Nomad culture survived the genocide, after the deposition of Ozai, more and more have contacted the Avatar to share artifacts and knowledge of the Air Nomads that they had hidden away during the war. Aang had eagerly responded to each of these letters and began to acquire these relics beholden to his culture. When Tenzin became of age and was to embark on his travels as a new airbending master, he sought to continue this practice and exploration. This is what brings him to Ba Sing Se University.
He had been writing to his mother to update her; telling of his plans to stop at the Earth Kingdom before going home to Air Temple Island. Katara had suggested to contact his brother who would be there for a diplomatic assignment. Tenzin was skeptical; he did not have a close relationship with his siblings after all. Nonetheless, to appease his mother, he did write to Bumi asking if he could stay for a couple of weeks with him. To his surprise, Bumi had responded in the affirmative.
“Coming!”
A voice answered the bell, a voice which was obviously not Bumi and was distinctly feminine.
The gate swung open, and Tenzin gaped.
“Hi Tenzin, you’re early!” Lin Beifong stood before him, clad in a gold qipao. For a moment Tenzin was not able to respond, focusing his attention on the curl at her neck that must have escaped the bun on top of her head.
“H-hello, Lin.”
She invited him in. “We weren’t expecting you until tomorrow.”
We?
“I was able to catch the first train out and so cut a day from my travel time.” He managed to respond as Lin led him to the house.
“I see, we were going to fetch you.”
“So, is it really Tenzin?” A loud voice came from one of the inner rooms of the house.
The metalbender rolled her eyes. “Of course, has my seismic sense failed us yet?”
“One could hope not.” Bumi came into view, wearing a towel tied at his waist and nothing much else. “Tennyboy! Great to see you!” The military man clapped his hands then moved to embrace his brother tightly and lifting him up. “Welcome to Ba Sing Se.”
“Good to see you too, Bumi.” Tenzin gasped out, dropping his bags, and patting his older brother back.
From his peripheral view, he could see Lin watching them with amusement.
“I want to hear all about what you’re up to here, baby brother.” Bumi set Tenzin back on the ground, crossing his arms, unmindful of his still dripping hair from his shower.
Lin cleared her throat and both men turned to her. She simply raised an eyebrow.
“Ah right,” Bumi shrugged. “Lin and I were on our way out for a charity event, would you want to join us?”
“Um, thanks but no.” Tenzin thought it would be the height of poor manners to show up uninvited by the hosts to a formal dinner. “I’ll settle in first.” He gestured to his things.
“Maybe next time, then.” Suddenly aware of his semi-nakedness, Bumi quickly addressed Lin. “Lin, if you could show him to his room? I’ll finish getting ready.”
Lin inclined her head and beckoned Tenzin to follow her.
Tenzin, although bewildered, followed Lin as she showed him where everything was (pantry, kitchen, living room). He also noted the shiny red embroidery on Lin’s dress that crept from the shoulder (is that a dragon?) to the small of her back which then drew his attention to her –
“And here is your bedroom.” Lin pushed open one of the doors.
“Thanks.” He paused just in time not to crash into the woman in front of him.
“If there’s anything you need, well, just let Bumi know.”
And, with a curt nod, Lin left Tenzin to settle in and wonder what he just got into.
 ---
Tenzin heard the front door open hours later as he sat at the living room, having a cup of tea while going over his notes.
“That was tough.” Bumi’s deep timbre echoed in the silent house.
Both he and Lin came into Tenzin’s view as they entered. Lin removed her heels and all but collapsed at the couch. “Remind me to decline any event that comes right after physical training sessions.”
“I did remind you,” Bumi slid down beside her, nodding at Tenzin to acknowledge his presence. “And you said, and I quote – ‘it’s just a short event, how bad can it be?’”
Lin covered her face with hands and groaned. “I underestimated the amount of networking that they expected during a charity event.”
Bumi laughed good-naturedly, patting Lin’s back. “Hey, Ten – how was your afternoon?”
“Good, good. I managed to unpack everything. All set for tomorrow.” Tenzin waved a sheaf of papers.
The non-bender looked between the metalbender who was slumped on the couch, eyes closed, and the airbender at his other side, clearly up for a long night of paperwork. An idea came to him. “I know, let’s all go out and have a late dinner and some drinks to welcome to you to Ba Sing Se.” He placed an arm over his brother’s shoulder. “What do you say?”
Tenzin grimaced a bit, having travelled conventionally without his sky bison was tiring. “Thanks for the offer but I’d rather stay in and get some rest.”
Bumi nudged Lin, who gave him a baleful glare. “Okay, no.” He laughed and got up, checking his pockets to make sure he has enough money. “I’ll just get us some take-out and we’ll eat in then.”
“That’s the first time you made sense tonight.” Lin grumbled.
With promises of a well-balanced meal for them of both vegetables, meat, and booze, Bumi loped off.
Lin remained in the couch, sighing as she stretched her legs and then tucked them to herself.
Tenzin adjusted his glasses and surreptitiously observed Lin as he went through his research notes.
He always had a soft spot for this childhood friend. They spent most of their toddler years and early childhood with one another, but Lin (and eventually Su) had been shuttled back and forth from Gaoling and Republic City. This was highly dependent on the Beifong grandparents as well as Toph’s schedule (and how dangerous her cases were). Meanwhile, his education has turned to focusing on Air Nomad culture. Their days intersected less and less as time passed by.
Their friendship dwindled, and they were not as close as they could have been.
Truth be told, as he watched Lin stretch once more then pad over to the kitchen with familiarity, he did not even know what she had been up to recently. He had some inkling to it (mostly relating to the police academy) but he did not expect her to be in Ba Sing Se. And most especially not around in Bumi’s UF provided residence.
He did harbor crush on the earthbender in their adolescence; surely at least Bumi knew about it, if his subsequent teasing during his visits to Air Temple Island were any proof.
Tenzin shook his head.
That was then and this was now; he had grown up and something as silly as a childhood crush was soon forgotten.
At least, that was what he kept telling himself as Lin came back to the living room, placing her own cup of tea on the table then disappearing to Bumi’s bedroom, claiming to retrieve a book she had been reading earlier.
Yes, it was all forgotten, Tenzin convinced himself even as he felt a pit form at his stomach.
 ---
The next time that Lin was over, Tenzin was lugging with him a large book bag filled with loaned books from the university library. After a couple of visits, he felt that the scrutiny from some of the staff and students made him uncomfortable. There was no denying who he was, with his tattoos brightly announcing to the world his mastery of a long thought to be dead element.
The fawning and the preferential treatment were a little less bad than how the air acolytes had regarded him. That was not conducive to his productivity and so he decided to bring home as much relevant material as he could instead and work from there.
He had only managed to spread out all the books and was in the process of cataloging the references when Lin burst into the house.
“Is Bumi home?” Lin appeared have rushed over, and Tenzin appreciated the flush on her cheeks and neck exposed by the tank top she wore.
Tenzin made a noise and pointed to Bumi’s bedroom and was responded to by a hasty thanks.
 ---
“You said you had news?” Lin asked without preamble upon entering the bedroom.
“Spirits, Linny!” Bumi shouted, pretending to cover himself up with his blanket when he was obviously doing some mending of his clothes. “What if I had been indecent?”
Lin simply snorted. “I’ve seen you in worse conditions.” She was no doubt pertaining to the time he had gotten drunk, and she had to bail him out.  “So, what is this about?” She sat at the edge of the bed, mindful of the sewing basket.
“Eh,” Bumi shrugged unconcerned but grinning. He tossed her an opened letter. “See for yourself.”
Skimming through the letter, a grin formed on Lin’s face as well. “Bumi! This is great!”
Prior to his assignment in Ba Sing Se, Bumi was short-listed for the next round of promotions. While tried and tested in the field, Bumi’s skills in diplomacy were yet to be proven. This latest assignment was a chance to prove just that.
And as in everything in his life, Bumi had to work doubly hard to prove himself. He had been a month in Ba Sing Se, attending meetings in the Royal Court, with the legislature and the kingdom’s security. He felt that he was not making a lot of leeway into reaching the accord that the United Forces needed with the Earth Kingdom. Their queen, Hou-Ting, had recently ascended to the throne and was distrustful of anything linked to the United Republic.
He had taken a couple of days off to visit his mother to take a breather and maybe a change in the scenery would give him more ideas how to approach the dilemma. He was going to sneak into the kitchen for a late breakfast when he overheard a conversation between his mother and Toph Beifong – which ended up with him seeking Lin to discuss a mutually-benefitting proposal…
This brings them to this moment where one of Bumi’s superiors had sent a missive on how one of the Earth Kingdom nobles had revisited his stance on the agreement between the United Republic and the Earth Kingdom. Included in the letter as well as a congratulatory note to continue whatever tactic he has employed as the results were in their favor. It was a simple introduction into the right company, an assistance that came in the form of Lady Lin of the Noble House of Beifong, who knew the Who’s Who in the Upper Ring of Ba Sing Se and the influential nobility in the Earth Kingdom.
“We should celebrate these little wins.” Lin handed the letter back. From her end, she will know if her presence in the upper-class of the Earth Kingdom has made any impact once she hears from her grandmother (who in turn, would have learned from one of her contemporaries living in Ba Sing Se).
“I don’t see why not.” Bumi merely tossed his mending into his sewing basket.
Grasping Lin’s arm and eagerly bringing her to the living room, he called out to his serious brother. “Tenzin! Get up, man – we’re going out to celebrate!”
 ---
Tenzin looked up to his beaming brother and Lin who was blushing from Bumi’s arm.
He wanted to decline joining them, fearing an outing of being the third wheel to the couple. At the same time, it had been a long time since he had spent time with Lin (and Bumi for that matter). Additionally, for some reason, that he did not want to dwell on right now, he did not want to leave the couple alone to their own devices.
Seeing Lin’s smile and Tenzin knew his decision was made for him.
It was not too bad, not really.
Lin and Bumi had tossed banter, speaking of nobles and politics that flew over Tenzin’s head. He did not bother to clarify, thinking that it must be some sort of inside joke between the two. Or something confidential related to their fields of work.
They selected a small food court still in the Middle Ring, which catered to the varied crowd with different cuisines. Bumi ordered mounds of varied barbecued meats and sauces.
Tenzin noticed that Bumi did not order anything for Lin and Lin was left perusing the menu on her own.
The waiter stood patiently; pen poised over his notepad ready for their order.
“I’ll have the green mango salad please.”
“The green mango salad for me.”
Bumi looked at them with amusement. “Seems like you’ve finally found someone who enjoys shrimp paste as much as you do, Lin.”
Lin simply pursed her lips and went on to order another entrée on top of the salad (squid ink noodles) and a glass of cold tea.
Tenzin added an order of seaweed noodles for himself.
Once their orders arrived and they have dug in, Lin and Tenzin continued to rib Bumi for not having green mango salad, which in this case, included a healthy dollop of shrimp paste.
“I’m telling you, Bumi, this salad is good.” Tenzin insisted, taking in several bites of the salad. “You can’t know until you try it.”
“No, thank you.” Bumi grimaced with slight disgust. “It stinks high heaven.”
“I find it a good deterrent on a first date,” Lin happily mixed the shrimp paste into the leafy vegetables and sliced mangoes. “Makes it easier for me to weed out those with unscrupulous intentions.”
“Seriously, Lin – unscrupulous? You’re the only other person aside from Tennyboy here who uses words with more than three syllables.” Bumi evaded a slice of mango that the earthbender tossed him. “Well, there you have it Tenzin, if you do find that unique lady who would share this horrific salad with you – you could be rest assured that she’s not after your good name, your esteem or a good time that night.”
Lin chortled. “I doubt anyone who was looking to hooking up will even order it in the first place.”
“Imagine the stink during foreplay…” Bumi waggled his eyebrows and was rewarded with a slap upside his head from the earthbender.
Tenzin thought that he would not mind sharing a salad with Lin while on a date.
As Lin reached out her chopsticks to snatch a piece of meat from Bumi’s plate, which Bumi subsequently tapped away lightly, the airbender sneaked two pieces of meat from Bumi to Lin’s plate when his brother was preoccupied.
This was the Lin that he knew, in a plain tank top and loose pants. Not the Gaoling heiress made up with a fancy bun and a tight dress. While she did look beautiful in her formal attire, Tenzin thought that she was especially radiant tonight in her natural state.
The grateful grin that Lin gave him was enough to remind him that maybe his little crush was not all gone.
 ---
Later that night, after Lin went home, Tenzin made a mistake of hovering in the kitchen as Bumi put away some of their leftovers.
“Something’s bothering you.”
“N-no.” Tenzin stammered out.
“You’re making that face.” Bumi waved a hand in front of Tenzin’s face.
“This is my face, that’s all.” Tenzin knew the non-bender could be stubborn and will not budge unless he gave in. “Fine.” He sighed. “Seriously, Bumi – Lin? She – she’s not even your type.”
“So, I have a type, eh?” Bumi stood up to his full height, sending a critical look at the younger man.
“You know what I mean.” Tenzin crossed his arms. He sought to phrase his thoughts in a way that will not insult either Lin or his brother. “You take her on dates, and she doesn’t seem like the usual girls you go out with.”
A flash of something crossed Bumi’s face and a knowing smile formed. “I don’t see how that’s a problem. Think about it Ten, Lin Beifong has brains, beauty, and brawn – the complete package. Anyone should think that she’s their type.” He flexed his arms, giving his brother mischievous wink. “Now, she’s got Bumi too.”
The sinking feeling that Tenzin felt since the start of the night grew heavier as he watched his brother gleefully say his good night and left him to his thoughts in the kitchen.
What was he thinking? Reviving feelings over his brother’s girlfriend? That just was not gentlemanly to do nor was it right.
 ---
As much as Tenzin wanted to avoid Lin, he found that it was near impossible with the frequency of Lin dropping by or Bumi coming home with Lin.
The couple would also be very considerate and would often invite him to join them at their formal events. To date, Tenzin had not accepted any of their invites yet.
It was also hard to ignore the earthbender as Lin would usually be the one to initial conversation, usually by poking through his notes and the materials sprawled on the coffee table. If there was anything that Tenzin could talk about all day, it was anything and everything to do with the Air Nation and their nomadic culture.
Lin’s sincere interest in the topics similarly encouraged him to open up to her.
And, hopefully, dare he wished, her to him.
 ---
Finding more in common with him with their esoteric food tastes compared to Bumi, Lin had taken to bringing some packed food from the food court from time to time.
In one of their conversations, she admitted to Tenzin that while she did enjoy eating out with Bumi, the soirees that they go to tend to serve the usual Earth Kingdom Upper Ring fare and it tends to get a little bit redundant after some time. While she would love to sample more of the dishes in the multi-cultural food court, most of the orders were good for sharing. And, after an ill-advised selection with Bumi (which ended up with the man looking green the entire night, to be fair Bumi was a champ and had not complained all night and had valiantly finished their food), Lin did not have the courage to order more with the non-bender.
To her delight, Tenzin offered to do these taste tests with her. Unfortunately, the schedules that they both adhere to had prevented any outings like the night that they all went out with Bumi.
Lin came up with a solution and would stop by the stalls and the food court to order a dish or two to try. Then, over their paperwork (Lin had taken to bringing over her own paperwork to go through at Bumi’s house), the two of them would share this meal, pretending to review the dishes with posh and snooty language they read in the lifestyle section of the Ba Sing Se gazette.
Lin found herself looking forward more and more to these nights, a reprieve from the arduous Dai Li training and highly decorous hobnobbing with the Upper Ring.
Tenzin’s calming presence and dry wit kept Lin interested to spend more time with the airbender. It was as though they were picking up back from their previously close relationship.
Don’t get her wrong, she also enjoyed the company that Bumi provided when they go out on their dates. He was a good conversationalist and he helped her deftly navigate through the upper echelon of the Earth Kingdom society. Bumi is a good older brother who shared her experience in a similar industry, someone to talk to in terms of career and the practicalities of life.
Tenzin on the other hand…
Lin tilted her head in consideration while the airbender absentmindedly tapped his pen to his chin, a mannerism that she now recognized.
The airbender made her feel heard and seen.
She made a face and turned to face her own papers.
Put it like that makes it sound so sappy and un-Lin-like.
And yet, it felt right.
 ---
Tenzin had finished his research an hour or so ago.
He was now vacillating between going to bed early and leaving a few books on the table, in the illogical hope that maybe when Lin drops by later with Bumi she will be intrigued enough to stay for a chat. It sounded so stupid.
A beat.
He wants that.
He looked at the clock. Lin and Bumi will not be back for a few more hours.
While he was contemplating this conundrum that he placed himself in, the door opened and in limped Bumi, an arm over Lin’s shoulder.
Tenzin immediately stood up to take Bumi’s other arm to assist. “What happened?” He peered at his brother.
“Genius here decided that he was strong enough to -.” Lin had started to respond but Bumi swiftly twisted to cover her mouth with his hand.
“It’s not important how I got injured- just that I did.” Bumi interrupted as he held Lin’s gaze.
The unspoken communication between the two was too much for Tenzin and was about to leave the couple alone when Lin rolled her eyes and mumbled her agreement.
Bumi placed his arm again on his brother’s shoulder. “Let’s hop to it, Ten-Lin.” He ordered imperiously, nodding towards his bedroom.
“Of course, my liege.” Lin muttered, snark and sarcasm dripping from her words as they assisted the non-bender.
With a bit of maneuvering, Tenzin and Lin were able to place Bumi on his bed. Tenzin then noticed the glint of metal at his brother’s foot.
“Do you need any more help?” He directed his question to Lin rather than his brother who seemed to be smiling loopily at them.
“Ooooh Ten-Lin,” Bumi called out in an odd singsong voice then patted the bed beside him. “Care to have a heart-to-heart with Papa Boomboom here?”
Papa Boomboom?
“I’m good.” Lin shook her head, pulling at Bumi’s shoes and tapping the metal brace that she appeared to have created. “The healer on site was able to give him first aid and painkillers. He’ll be out in no time.” She was resolutely ignoring Bumi’s waggling eyebrows.
Tenzin inched out and quietly closed the door behind him, not wanting to find out what Papa Boomboom was up to, similarly disregarding Bumi calling out “Ten-Lin! Ten-Lin!” as he left.
By the time Lin got out of the bedroom, the airbender was back in his spot in the living room, nursing a warm cup of genmaicha. His things were now in a neat pile on the coffee table. His hope of a conversation with Lin that he had initially looked forward to now a thing of the past. With his brother in semi-lucidity and injured to boot, no doubt Lin would be spending her visit (or even staying over) at Bumi’s bedside.
It was to Tenzin’s astonishment when Lin plopped beside him at her spot on the couch a couple of minutes later.
“Do you still have some of that?”
He blinked before realizing that Lin was pertaining to the genmaicha. “Ah yes, there’s more in the pot in the kitchen – let me get it for you.” He added belatedly, something warm curling within him at Lin’s soft smile as she thanked him.
The airbender got up to get the teapot while the earthbender proceeded to remove her shoes.
Lin was flexing then curling and uncurling her toes when he got back.
“Why do you even wear those shoes if they’re so uncomfortable?” He could not help but ask as he set the tea tray down on the table.
“It goes with the dress.” Lin nonchalantly stated as she shifted in her seat. She tucked both of her legs to her side at the couch and Tenzin had to concentrate on pouring her tea as her green silk skirt hiked a bit.
They sipped their tea in comfortable silence for a few moments.
As always, Lin was the one who broke the quiet. “Aren’t you going to ask about Bumi?”
He wrinkled his nose. “I’m not sure if I want to know what happened but I’ll bite – how is he?”
“He’ll be fine tomorrow,” Lin scoffed. “I’ve removed the brace. Nothing else bruised except for his ego. Not going to give everything away but he injured himself because of a dance move.”
Tenzin was mid-sip and had choked on the tea.
“Easy there,” Lin moved to rub Tenzin’s back in circles, in an attempt to help him.
Unknown to her, it only heightened his embarrassment and the soothing movements only contributed to his discomfort.
“Dance move?” He eventually garbled out, having regained his composure.
Lin’s lips quirked up. “Yes, don’t go teasing him on it yet though. Keep that in your back pocket. You’ll never know when you might need it.” She removed her hand on his back and Tenzin felt its absence acutely. She reached for the pot on the table to refill her own cup. She then caught sight of the title of the topmost book that Tenzin had.
As Tenzin had hoped earlier, the earthbender brought their attention to the book and asked about his progress in his research on the instruments of the Air Nomads.
Eventually the pot has been refilled and emptied, their cups left cold as their conversation suitably engaged them until the late hours of the night.
“Wouldn’t that be grand though,” Tenzin had expressed. “If we were able to have enough artifacts to host in a museum. I mean, Dad was able to transport the ancient airbending gates to Air Temple Island. It would be great if we’ll find something more to add.”
Lin, who, by now, did not care that her skirt was wrinkled and was now hugging a throw pillow to her chest, observed. “You really enjoy what you’re doing, don’t you?”
“Bits and pieces of it,” He picked at the frayed edges of his notes. “The thing I hate the most about being the Avatar’s airbending son is the travelling.”
“Oh?” The tone was non-judgmental but curious.
“I know it sounds terribly ungrateful.” Tenzin fidgeted. “But I really disliked moving from one temple to the other. I’m not made for this nomadic lifestyle. I sometimes think that being an airbender was wasted on me.” He had never spoken of this to anyone, not even his mother. “I would have been utterly contented spending my days at Republic City or at Air Temple Island even.”
He expected a rebuke or a scathing remark on him being an ingrate (Agni knows how some senior acolytes had spoken behind his back whenever he deviated from Air Nomad culture).
“What would you rather do if this wasn’t expected of you?” Lin’s gentle query and earnest expression was a balm to his anxious soul.
“Maybe a teacher or a scribe.” There was something about Lin that was drawing him in, making him want to be honest as possible. “Nothing fancy, nothing worth writing home about.”
“You’d be a good teacher,” She considered. “You’re very patient and very much willing to impart whatever knowledge you have.”
He rubbed the back of his neck, Lin’s intense grey gaze on him. “How about you? What if… you weren’t born a Beifong?”
He could see the hesitation. “Can you keep a secret?” Lin whispered, inching towards him after a few moments.
Tenzin could only nod. At this point, he will probably do anything for her.
She curled her finger at him, beckoning him closer, close enough to whisper in his ear. “I wanted to be a dancer.”
“I could see it.” There had always been something graceful with how Lin used to manipulate her metal cables. Where her mother was firmly stuck to the ground with rough movements, Lin seemed to be lighter on her feet with more fluid motions. He has not seen Lin metalbend recently; he could only imagine the difference a couple of years training would make on improving her bending.
“Really?” The surprise was apparent on her face.
Tenzin idly wondered if she, like him, thought that their dreams were ridiculous considering the heaviness of the mantle that were their parents’ legacies.
“Why not? I think you’d be good at it.” On a whim, maybe it was the lateness of the hour, the cathartic feeling of telling someone of his dream and insecurities, Tenzin let the words escape before he could even filter them. “Dance with me.” He stood up and extended a hand to the earthbender who was still curled up on the couch.
“What?” Lin’s eyes widened slightly (is that a faint blush he sees on her cheeks?).
“Dance with me.” He repeated.
“But there’s no music.” Despite saying that, she held his hand and allowed herself to be pulled up.
“Don’t worry about it,” Tenzin positioned themselves closer, he was sure it was not an airbending dance position but something he saw on a visit to the Fire Nation. “It’s just you and me now.”
After few false starts, both got into a steady rhythm with Tenzin leading.
As Lin grew more relaxed in his arms, Tenzin knew he would take what he could now. He felt like he was just doused with cold water with the epiphany he had. He was just fooling himself. His crush was not over, far from it.
His feelings were stronger than ever.
His eyes landed on Bumi’s bedroom door.
His feelings which should remain hidden as they were towards his brother’s girlfriend. His feelings which he will never act on.
It never did cross his mind to wonder why the woman was still there in the house, spending time with him willingly hours after her supposed boyfriend had turned in for the night.
 ---
“Nobleman with a distasteful mustache at three o'clock, Lin.” Bumi whispered at her side, clutching her elbow as they weaved through the crowd.
Lin stood ramrod straight. “That’s the nephew of one of Grandma's friends.”
It was at situations like this that she valued Bumi's presence at her side. Nonetheless, they made sure to act in accordance with proprietary.
She overheard several matrons saying that it was a pity that Lady Beifong appeared to be spoken for; their son/grandson/nephew would have been perfect for her.
However, in all the soirees and events that they have been attending, no one had outright asked them the status of their relationship. Lin was not about to disabuse them of their assumptions as no one was brave enough to confirm anything with her.
This at least left her to freely engage in conversation without fear of misconstrued intentions. This also allowed Bumi to be included in these discussions where he would expertly drop opinions or statements that may influence their thinking in relation to the United Forces or the current political climate.
No one thought twice of the presence of the non-bending son of the Avatar – If the Beifongs approved of this military son of a pacifist, then he was good enough to mingle among the Earth Kingdom elite.
As the two of them navigated their way to the buffet table, Bumi casually asked. “When this is over, aren’t you worried about them vultures descending upon you? Or Republic City gossip rags?”
Lin hummed as she perused the selection. “No, not really. We’re far away from Republic City and this is very exclusive society is not about to dish out to anyone outside of their circle. That’s what keeps them in power.” She picked up a piece of bruschetta. “And besides, maybe I’ll ask Mom to send Su here in the next season – find herself a good husband or something.”
“Lin, she’s barely twenty.” Bumi commented, eyes twinkling in amusement.
The earthbender merely shrugged.
“And, what about you?” He prodded her side as they sat back at their table. “Any romantic entanglements you see in the horizon?” It was to Bumi’s credit that he detected the barely noticeable tightening of her jaw and widening of eyes. “So, there is someone!” He announced gleefully, turning a few heads their way.
“No, there isn’t.” Lin grumbled, stabbing a fork into the plateful of food that she had taken.
“Playing dumb with me never worked, Lin Beifong, even when we were children.”
Lin hated how Bumi was able to read her easily; their equally matched observational skills honed by their respective careers.
“Don’t think I didn’t see it coming or that I did not see it happening.”
She resolutely brushed him off and focused on her plate.
“What are you going to do about it?” Where Lin might be stubborn, Bumi was downright obstinate and pushy.
“There’s nothing I should do anything about.”
Bumi glanced at her pensively over the glass he was sipping from. “Maybe you’re right – you shouldn’t have to do anything.”
“Oh Bumi, you’re reading too much into this. It doesn’t mean anything,” She turned away. “Besides, he probably has some sweetheart waiting for him at one of the temples. We’re just friends.”
It doesn’t mean anything.
We’re just friends.
At least, that was what Lin told herself even as she once again found herself sitting at Bumi’s living room that night long after Bumi had gone to bed.
 ---
“What did that piece of paper do to offend you?”
Tenzin paused the incessant pen tapping that he had been unconsciously doing as the notice he received was pulled from under the pen. He twiddled with his fingers while Lin read the document. “I got an offer from the university to hold a series of lectures in the coming days.”
Lin congratulated him on the offer. “What are you displeased about then? Surely it’s not about the lack of topics that you’ll discuss.” She raised an eyebrow at the stack of folders on the table, each labelled with meticulous care.
“No, it’s not that.” He waved it off. “I just – I don’t know if I can make it interesting enough for them.”
She handed him one of the folders. “Try me.”
“Come again?”
Lin leaned back in the couch, getting comfortable. “Practice with me, pretend I’m one of those bright-eyed students that you’ll be teaching.”
Yes, pretend.
Little did they know, both were pretending for each other’s sake long before they realized it.
 ---
“In all honesty, I envy Bumi and Kya.”
“You do?”
A nod. “They get to live their life the way they wanted it to be. There’s not a lot riding on their shoulders. Whatever they are doing now – they wanted it, they’re living the life that they want because they can.”
“Is that what you truly think?” The earthbender’s piercing stare held his gaze. He hoped that whatever she found conveyed his honesty. “Maybe you need to check in with them. They might see things differently.”
 ---
It was one of the rare weekends that Bumi, Lin, and Tenzin found themselves free from any engagement. They took this opportunity to head to dine at their usual food court.
While Bumi and Lin scouted for an empty table, Tenzin browsed the menu of one of the newly opened stalls.
“Master Tenzin?”
Tenzin turned to who called him and came face to face with a vaguely familiar woman.
“I’m Pema – from the lectures?” The student obviously expected that he would remember her.
“Ah yes,” Tenzin awkwardly responded because he did not really recall a lot from the sea of faces. “From yesterday’s morning session?”
The girl, Pema, beamed at him, nodding. “And the afternoon session from the day before, and the one session lecture the day before that.”
“Oh, so you managed to attend all of them?” There was mild interest in his tone now. Maybe he was able to get through the Ba Sing Se students. “Which topic interested you the most?”
Pema began to explain excitedly when Tenzin saw Lin wave at him from a few tables away.
“Say, are you eating alone?” At the very least, politeness made him invite the young woman.
“I-I-That is to say -no- I mean, yes.” Pema shifted her eyes.
“Would you like to join us?” At her nod, Tenzin motioned to have her follow him to their table.
Upon approaching, Tenzin saw that Lin and Bumi had already given their orders to the waiter.
At Lin’s raised eyebrow and Bumi’s curious look, Tenzin introduced Pema and said that she would be joining them today.
The waiter handed both a copy of the menu while Tenzin pulled the chair in front of Bumi for Pema to sit on.
“Ahh, Pema, is it?” Bumi placed an arm around the back of Lin’s chair. “Any idea what you would be getting?”
“I, um, not sure yet.” She hid behind the menu, brows furrowing.
Bumi grinned mischievously while catching his brother’s eye.
That can’t be good, Tenzin thought silently.
“Might I make a recommendation?” The non-bender leaned forward and at Pema’s nod, pointed on an item on the menu she was holding. “Tenzin loves this.” Bumi winced subtly that Tenzin could surmise was because Lin must have kicked him under the table.
“Oh, yes of course!” Was Pema’s immediate reaction and ordered.
Tenzin was surprised and ordered his food as well. When the waiter had taken all their orders and left, the airbender turned to the student. “You like the green mango salad?”
“Yes, I do – I enjoy it a lot.” Pema enthusiastically agreed.
“Even the shrimp paste?” Bumi asked innocently but sending a sly look at Lin, who steadfastly kept silent.
“Especially the shrimp paste. It gives it the texture and distinct salty taste.”
“Indeed.”
Tenzin finally caught Lin’s eye and there was an odd expression on her face that he could not explain.
Bumi proceeded to liven up the table with conversation and even make Pema feel at ease. It was one of the traits of his brother that Tenzin envied.
The rest of their meal went by uneventfully and they all got to know Pema a little bit more and her interest in the lectures from the past days. As Bumi did not draw attention to the unusually taciturn earthbender beside him, Tenzin did not attempt to draw her into conversation as well despite his confusion. Lin would commonly be a little bit more talkative during their small outings like this.
Maybe she had a bad day?
As the meal winded down, Tenzin thought he rather wanted to see more of Pema. At least, to not remain as a third wheel to the couple in front of him.
“So, we might have, uh, tea after dinner. Would you like to join us?”
Pema’s effusive acceptance became garbled to his ears as he detected the sudden screeching of the metal chair in front of him being pushed back.
“I’m sorry, I need to go.”
Both Bumi and Tenzin turned to Lin, who was only maintaining eye contact with her boyfriend.
“Oh right, your… report.” Bumi motioned to stand up as well. “Do you want me to bring you home?”
His brother’s unexpectedly gentle tone made Tenzin think if there is something else that he missed. A subtext that passed known only to the couple.
Lin tilted her head and smiled weakly. “No need, I can manage.”
Nonetheless, Bumi stood up, made their excuses to Tenzin and Pema.
Tenzin looked on as Lin allowed herself to be escorted by Bumi. The lie of having a report waiting for her tasting bitter in the airbender’s mouth.
But why?
“I suppose tea is out of question now.” Pema said shrewdly, moving to stand up as well when Bumi and Lin was out of their line of sight.
Maybe she was more perceptive than Tenzin gave her credit for.
If Pema thought that he was about to invite her elsewhere, she was mistaken, and Tenzin extended his hand to shake hers. “Pleased to meet you, Pema, thank you.” He paused and somewhat awkwardly added. “And good luck on your studies.”
Tenzin closed his eyes for a moment, a headache already forming.
He froze.
There on the table, beside Pema’s empty plate of what used to contain her order of skewers, was a full bowl of green mango salad, mixed but not a single bite taken out of it.
 ---
“You’re an idiot.”
“Excuse me?”
“She’s too young.”
He knew his older brother was right, but it stung to be called an idiot.
Ever since Lin urged him to talk to his siblings, Tenzin had consciously made time to connect to Bumi.
Along the way, he learned about how different their views of their childhood were. Bumi, on his part, was quite candid and the airbender appreciated that. More than once, Tenzin was tempted to evade some of their talks that were bordering on painful (cut-and-run much?). He felt that he owed it to his brother though to power through.
But tonight, there were emotions that were too raw to filter. If the couple just wanted some time together, they need not fabricate Lin having to work on a report. They need not pity him for being their third wheel.
“Lin is too young for you too and you don’t hear me berating you for it.”
“That’s different.”
“Is it, really?”
“Well, if you get your head out of your behind, maybe you’ll see what’s right in front of you.”
 ---
Letters swapped hands.
“Training’s almost done and as you can see there, Grandma has already received news from the grapevine about what an asset I am to the Beifong line.”
Bumi refolded the letter after reading. “I suppose your time in Ba Sing Se has come to an end then?”
“Only if you think you don’t need me anymore.” Lin paused and gave a short laugh, finding her phrasing funny. “I mean, if you think you don’t need help anymore with your assignment?” She leaned back, tapping the letter from Bumi’s superior in her hand.
“I should say mission accomplished to us both.” Bumi drew Lin into his arms. “Thank you.”
It was most unfortunate that it was in this good-bye scene that the airbender arrived to.
 ---
The raindrops continue to fall, leaving staccato beats on the roof top.
The entirety of Ba Sing Se was coated in a haze that enveloped the typically green and brown place in a blueish gray hue.
The peaceful scene should have relaxed the airbender.
Tenzin sighed.
But it did not.
Not when he could hear characteristically feminine giggles from his brother's room.
He checked the clock, too early to have visitors over unless it were visitors who never left the night before.
His knuckles turned white, tightly grasping his mug.
As much as he felt that he should come clean to Bumi about his feelings for Lin (his girlfriend), his head was telling him not to. It would be another thing that Bumi might hold against him (on top of a lot of other childhood insecurities that their father inadvertently caused).
He just wants both Lin and Bumi to be happy. Even if it means hearing what they have been up to in the early hours of the day.
“Ah, Spirits what a turn out – it’s as though Tui and La decided to inundate the entire Earth Kingdom by flooding it.”
Tenzin’s head jerked up.
Lin Beifong was standing in the edge of their kitchen, hair dripping wet.
His mind was sluggish in realizing, shocked as it was to see the earthbender.
“Do you still have some of that?” Lin waggled her fingers towards Tenzin’s mug of genmaicha.
“Oh, yes – where are my manners –.” Tenzin tripped over his words and hastily poured her a cup. Then reaching over to the coat rack and draping his coat over her, he admonished her lightly. “What were you doing out in this deluge anyway? You’ll get sick!”
“Well, Bumi told me that you intend to leave in a few days’ time and as I was preparing for my trip back to Republic City, I thought that -.”
A door creaked open. “Lemme grab us a bite from the pantry; we need sustenance if we want to last all the way to noon.”
Damn.
“Oh.” Bumi stumbled into the room, completing their peculiar tableau of a dripping earthbender cloaked in red and yellow, a pale shock airbender standing at the edge of the room and a military man that, for whatever intent and purposes he may have, was wearing nothing.
Tenzin’s pale skin started to redden, comprehension dawning on him. “Oh – that’s all you have to say?” If Lin was here – then who was with Bumi the entire night/morning back in his bedroom?
The non-bender scratched his bum. “What did you want me to say?”
“Oh, for Spirits’ sake, Bumi cover yourself!” Lin averted her eyes. “I may not act like it the whole time, but I still am a lady!”
Ah Beifong,” Bumi smiled devilishly, his hand moving from his head to his legs. “Come take a look at what you’re actually missing out on.”
Lin pointedly faced the ice box, her back to the naked man. “No way, I’m not missing on anything.”
“Come on, Linny!”
“No, Bumi.” Lin snorted a laugh then bent her head over her cup of genmaicha.
Tenzin felt like he was going to explode.
How dare Bumi disregard Lin Beifong just like that? Flaunting his floozy---
How dare Lin not call him out – it was beyond disrespectful!
What’s more: being in a relationship with Lin was something he personally wanted for himself - not because of his father, not because he is an airbender, but because he wanted this. To see Bumi taking her for granted was like a knife twisting in his chest.
“Get yourself some clothes before you catch a cold.”
“You dry yourself before you catch a cold.”
Why were they skirting over the obvious issue?
Tenzin let out a strangled sound.
“Something wrong, Tennyboy? Your vein is about to burst on your forehead.”
“Something wrong?” The airbender’s voice went a pitch higher. “Something. Wrong. You –.” He pointed aggressively at his brother. “Just spent the night with some,” He clenched and unclenched his fist as he tried to select the appropriate word. “Woman that is not your girlfriend!”
Lin’s eyes shot to Bumi’s. “You have a girlfriend?”
Bumi raised both hands. “Wait a minute, you know I don’t. This,” His shoulder gestured towards the bedroom. “Is a recent development and it’s just for fun, you know, and she definitely knows.”
“What!” Tenzin’s gasped out.
“Wait a minute,” Bumi snapped his fingers. “Lin, you didn’t tell him?”
“Tell me what?”
“Tell him what?” The earthbender scrunched her face thinking before it cleared as she seemed to have concluded something. “Oh. No. I didn’t – I didn’t think I had to –!”
Tenzin felt he was watching a ball go back and forth between the other two.
“You’re the one talking to him often.” Bumi crossed his arms.
“You’re the one living with him.” Lin pointed at the airbender.
“You’re the one in love with him!”
A stunned silence followed.
Surely… Bumi was mistaken?
 ---
Bumi ran a hand over his face. “I think you both have a lot to talk about.” Then, he grabbed the nearest food on the table (a loaf of sweet mung bread). “I’ll leave you both to it.” He waved the loaf then exited the kitchen.
Lin considered the tea in her cup, focusing as though it could lend her the fortitude for the upcoming conversation.
Tenzin sat on the chair opposite her, taking a sip from his own genmaicha. “Feel like explaining what that was?”
As an earthbender, Lin went into it head on. “Bumi and I are not – were not – in a relationship – we – I thought that was clear.” Then she proceeded to explain the arrangement that she had with his brother. “I’m sorry if we made you feel uncomfortable with this.” She waved her hand uselessly.
Lin bit her lip anxiously. She blew on her cup, waiting for the airbender to process the information that was dumped on him.
 ---
Two things ran through his mind.
Firstly, Bumi and Lin are not (never were!) in a relationship.
That key revelation echoed, unlocking several objections that he had repeatedly told himself to tamp down his feelings for the earthbender.
Secondly, it did not escape his notice that Lin did not say anything to refute Bumi’s claim.
His heart beat loudly, feeling like it was up in his throat. Excitement and nervousness made it difficult for him to breath, ironic for an airbender.
“Lin,” Tenzin cleared his throat. “And what Bumi said,” He leaned forward to tilt her head up so he could look at her eyes. He gulped and took a deep breath. “Is it true?” He felt Lin pull back for a second before she slowly nodded.
Without a hint of hesitation, Tenzin stood up to gather Lin in his arms, feeling complete and contented, something alien to him, something he had not felt for the longest time.
“I take it you like me too?” A muffled voice at his chest murmured.
“More than.” Tenzin bent his head, putting his forehead against Lin’s, unmindful of how her wet clothes now clung to them both. “I love you too.” He then closed the gap between their lips.
They would have gone longer if Lin had not shuddered involuntarily. They separated slightly, arms still around each other.
“I’m sorry, I probably need to get dried.”
Tenzin peered down at Lin’s now translucent attire. “Better yet, let’s get you out of those wet clothes. That is – if you don’t have any objections to it?”
“None whatsoever.” Lin tiptoed, pressing her lips to him. “No boyfriend, no rumored beau…Care to help me out?”
“Gladly.”

Becoming A Stark? (1) Peter Parker X Stark! Fem Reader
A/N: This will eventually be a Peter Parker X Stark! femReader. However, there was backstory needed so Peter won’t be introduced until Chapter Six. This takes place after Iron Man 3 but before AOU. However time is wishy washy and will pass in weird ways so lol opps. Let me know if you want to be tagged.
Word Count: 3073
Warnings: Swearing
Tumblr media
You feel it in your soul that you will hate Tony Stark for the rest of your life. It doesn’t matter that you’re related to him. It doesn’t matter that you’re his daughter. He ripped you from everything you’ve ever known. You were happy living with your grandparents. Sure they were getting up there in age, but you were happy. You had a life, you had friends, hell you had been working on moving forward with your crush and were hoping to have a date to homecoming this year. But all of that was ruined the day that Tony Stark waltzed through your front door. You can’t help but think back to that interaction.
“Nana, who’s this?”
“Tony Stark. Genius, billionaire, philanthropist, Iron Man, to name a few things. I’d offer a hand but that’s not something I normally do. I guess, maybe I should due to the circumstances but…” It’s not the first time you’ve seen his face. The Avengers have saved New York a few times, but it is the first time you’ve seen him up close. The dark haired stranger trails off and you’re put off by his attitude alone. Why was someone this stuck up standing in your living room? So instead of saying anything, you turn your head back to your book. Tony decides to take a seat at the opposite end of the couch and tries again. “What are you reading?”
Instead of answering, you just hold up the book and let him read the cover. Once and Future, spelled out on the spine of the book that you had removed the book jacket from while you read. “Y/N, maybe put the book down for a few minutes. I think Mr. Stark-”
“Tony is fine.”
“I think Tony and you need to discuss something.” You hesitantly pick up the receipt you had been using as a bookmark and slide it into the book, not wanting to leave Ari Helix behind, but you wouldn’t be rude to your Nana on a good day. On a day that you had trudged through the snow in your converse, maybe, but not on purpose.
“I don’t know him. I don’t think we have anything to discuss.”
“You’re right, we don’t know each other yet, but I’m hoping that will change with everything that’s going to happen.”
“What’s going to happen?” You can feel your eyebrows fall towards your eyes as you feel as though something is about to change without your permission.
“Well Y/N, I’m… I’m your dad.”
“Bullshit.” You say quickly. “Tony Stark doesn’t have kids. And if he did, there would have been a fucking gossip blog screaming about it already.”
“Well you definitely have my mouth if nothing else.” Tony adds with a chuckle.
“I don’t have anything of yours, because you’re not my dad. I never want to see you again. Get the fuck out.” You push off the couch and turn to run off to your room.
“See that’s going to be a little tough seeing as you're supposed to come live with me.”
“What the fuck did you just say?” You turn on your heels, the anger building quickly. You’ve always been a bit of a hot head, but in this moment you don’t even try to control your temper. “I have a home, thank you very kindly. I don’t fucking know you. And I’m not looking to find a dad anytime soon.” The words spit out of you before you can stop any of them.
“See the thing is, you’re fourteen and I’m your dad. Custodially, you’re supposed to live with me.”
“See the thing is,” you mock before continuing, “You didn’t care for fourteen years, so I don’t give a shit what you think you’re supposed to be doing custodially.” You can’t help but add air quotes around the word custodially. It burns as it leaves your lips. He hasn’t cared about you for fourteen years, why start now?
“That’s because I didn’t know you existed Y/N. I found out about you twenty four hours ago and I’m stepping up now.” The words leave his mouth in an exasperated tone, but he doesn’t raise his voice.
“How?”
“How what?”
“How did you find out about me?”
“Your high school.”
“What?”
“When you registered for school they had your birth certificate. They needed more information. Since it listed me as your father, they reached out to Nat- to my assistant. It was quite the shock to me that my child’s school was reaching out to me, since I didn’t know I had a child but the timing adds up and looking at you, it makes a lot of sense.”
“You were listed on my birth certificate?” This question was aimed at your grandparents more than at Tony-your father.
“We didn’t know if it was true or not. Your mom was in a bad place when she had you Y/N. So we had to take everything she said with a grain of salt. Was she beautiful and loving and did she love you? Yes completely. But did a lot of what she said during that time make sense? No, not at all.” Your nana says as she sits down on the couch, rubbing her knee. It’s probably another bad day. If you leave, who will make sure Nana and Pops are ok?
“I can’t go with you.” You cross your arms as you speak to Ton-your father.
“Why not?” His eyebrow raises over his square glasses.
“‘Cuz someone has to help Nana and Pops around the house.”
“I’ll make sure there’s a nurse helping them. Or better we can move them into a nursing facility where they don’t have to go up and down a bunch of flights of steps all the time.”
“Why would you do that.” The question came out as a demand, especially since you don’t want to believe this man that’s taking you away from the only family you’ve ever known would do something… nice.
“Because they’re your family. I’m not heartless. Well I guess that depends on what your belief on science is and arc reactors are, but technically I do still have a heart underneath all of this.” He points to where you know there would be metal and lights under his suit. “But for right now, we need to focus on getting you to the tower.”
“What tower?”
“Avenger’s tower? It’s closer than Malibu? And in less shambles.”
“So you’re moving me from the home that I know and love, but you don’t even live where you’re moving me?”
“I live there a lot of the time. And the Avengers are there most of the time which means you’ll be very safe. But I do have to travel for business.”
“Then I’ll stay where I am thanks.” Tony goes to speak when Wallace goes off. The beeping is only jarring for him since you and your Nana are used to it going off at random times.
“What the hell is that?”
“That is Wallace.” You say, not clearing up anything. Hmmm, your Dexcom says you’re 205 and rising? You could have sworn you had insulin on board. So you unclip the pump from your side and tap the screen to enter your blood sugar. No correction needed.
“You good babydoll?” Your nana asks from across the living room.
“I’m good. I have insulin on board.”
“You’re diabetic?” Tony asks, putting two and two together.
“Yup. Have been since I was four.”
“And Wallace?” He asks hesitantly.
“Do you honestly care?” You say before rolling your eyes and walking towards the kitchen. Mentally, you slap yourself. You should have grabbed your book. Now you’ll either have to start a new one or wait until your father, you roll your eyes at even saying it, leaves so you can continue your space adventure. Walking down the hallway you enter your room and close the door behind you. All you want to do is shut out the bombshell that was dropped on you and not deal with it. But for some reason you get the feeling that Tony Stark, freaking Iron Man, isn’t one to just let things go.
Giving up on the idea of starting another book, you open your computer and click your Spotify to start playing the playlist you had paused this morning when you had left to run errands with Pops. You only have two weeks of summer left, so you had spent time getting school supplies and groceries before returning to the apartment. While Hitchin’ A Ride by Green Day starts playing, you open Twitter, hoping for anything to distract yourself. But somehow you find yourself on Tony Stark’s Twitter. It was less narcissistic that you imagined for him. Some retweets about Stark Industries, a few comical tweets about wanting a cheeseburger, and then a tweet from twenty four hours that just said HOLY SHIT in all caps and nothing else. Could that be about you? Closing out Twitter, you find yourself opening up your Tumblr to scroll as Lithium by Nirvana played. Or well you tried to scroll, but a knock on your door interrupts you.
“Can I come in?” Tony’s head peaks in.
“If I say no will you go?” You say without looking up.
“Probably not. The people in my inner circle say I’m fairly stubborn.”
“Hmm.” Is the only reply you give him. To be fair, a lot of your friends would say you’re stubborn too so it’s not that surprising that your father is too.
“I know you don’t like it kiddo-”
“Don’t call me kiddo.
“-but we do need to head to the Tower soon. Happy’s been parked downstairs for about as long as he’s allowed to be there.” Tony continues as if you hadn’t said anything. “So how about you pack up stuff you’ll need for the next few days and then I can send Happy and some other people to come get the rest later on?”
“You’re going to send people to pack up my stuff? You know how invasive that is?”
“Ok, I’ll send you over with them, you can pack it up and they’ll move it to the tower, it’s your choice. Or to Malibu if you’d rather. Well that is once the rebuild is done. Long story. But if you stay at the tower, you won’t have to change schools.”
“Yippee. Everyone at school will get to find out that Tony Stark is my father. How much fun will that be.” Your voice is dripping with sarcasm. “I definitely wanted to be ostracized my first year at high school. Thanks for making it even better than I could ever imagine high school being.”
“Look I know this isn’t a win/win scenario, but we can keep your name out of the press until your eighteen if you want. You’re a minor-”
“Yeah, but when the paparazzi see me coming out of the tower, that won’t tip them off.”
“I’ll have Happy drive you. There’s a garage entrance. No one will see you coming or leaving.”
“Great so I just have to give up my freedom. That’s even better than I imagined.”
“Y/N, I know this isn’t what you wanted, or even what you want, but I think we can come up with something that works in the long run. Plus I’m having Pepper, you’ll meet her later, take over SI so I won’t have to do as much. I can try to stay in New York as much as possible. Because no matter what happens, you’re my daughter and I want to know you.” You don’t say anything in response. “I hope one day, you feel similarly.” He says softly.
“I doubt it.” You say honestly.
“Well even if that’s the case, right now we do need to pack up some stuff to take to the tower for now. Want me to hel-” He starts to pick up a sweatshirt from the end of your bed and you snatch it from his hand as you reply.
“I’ve got it.”
“Y/N, we’re here.” Your father’s voice pulls you from your thoughts and you look at the non descript parking garage that is under what you assume is the tower. The man you’ve figured out is Happy, though he’s the exact opposite of Happy, opens your door and you climb out, knowing that Tony will be behind you. Happy goes to grab your bags from the trunk, but you stop him.
“I’ve got it.”
“It’s part of my job.”
“I don’t have an issue carrying my own stuff like some people.” From the trunk you lift out your purple backpack, the black rolling suitcase, and the canvas bag that’s filled with all your pump supplies, sensors, and insulin. You follow Tony and Happy towards an elevator.
“JARVIS take us to the main floors.”
“Certainly sir.” You look up expecting to see a face or something but there’s no one there.
“JARVIS is the AI that runs the whole tower. If you need anything JARVIS is the one to ask. If there’s specific food you want or if you need stuff for school or, well, anything really, just ask JARVIS. I’ll get you added to the levels of clearance that allow you to order anything that you want.”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“Part of you living with me is that I’m going to provide for you. JARVIS is part of providing for you. I’m not the best at remembering to like grocery shop or send the laundry out so JARVIS helps with that.”
“Send the laundry out? Do you not have a washer and dryer in this whole place?” You cock an eyebrow at how spoiled he sounds.
“We do, but there are other things that take time away from me.” You add continue to do my own laundry to the mental list of things that will make you different from your father. Tony notices the disapproval marked in his daughter’s face and hopes that maybe meeting the Avengers will make up for the disappointment he’s been to her so far. The doors open and in the living room Natasha and Clint are sitting watching a movie while Steve sits in a chair reading a book. “Where’s Code Green?”
“In the lab,” Steve comments, not looking up from the page he’s on.
“That’s Capsicle. Legolas is sitting next to Nat. Big Green is down in the lab and Point Break is currently back at home but you’ll meet him eventually, though hopefully not his brother.” At the sound of being introduced the three in the living room look up and see the girl standing next to Tony in surprise.
“Uh, Tony, are we taking pint size Avengers now?” Clint asks.
“I might be small, but I can kick your knees out just as easily.” You pull on the strap of your backpack, not really wanting to be in this room much longer.
“Ok, before you kick anyone’s knees out. This is not an Avenger recruit. This is Y/N Stark, my daughter.” Ok taking on his last name was something you were going to have to talk to him about because you were perfectly happy being Y/N Y/L/N, not this Y/N Stark bullshit.
“You have a kid?” Steve asks, genuine confusion spread across his face.
“I do. I didn’t know until yesterday, but I’m doing the right thing.” You can’t stop the snort that escapes you. Tony looks over at you.
“Sorry,” You say although you don’t mean it. “Can I es- go to my room?”
“‘Yes, you can escape to your room. I’ll show you where it is.”
“I got it boss. I think you have some people that need answers.” Happy offers. You’re silently relieved that Happy offered to show you. If you had to spend another minute with your dad, you might lose your mind. Happy walks you into the kitchen and opens the fridge as you go past it. You look at him, trying to figure out why he’s opening it. “Tony told me you’re diabetic. You have insulin that needs refrigeration right?”
“Oh, yeah I just didn’t know he told you.”
“Head of security. There’s not much he doesn’t tell me.” Happy turns them towards a staircase leading away from where all the Avengers are. “But you know if you need someone to talk to, or grab a cheeseburger with, there’s things he doesn’t have to know about.”
“I don’t eat meat, but I appreciate it, Happy.”
“He’s going to say you’re not his kid if you don’t eat cheeseburgers.” And for the first time since all of this started, you actually let out a laugh.
Tony’s head turns towards the sound of the laugh. It’s unfamiliar, but he wants to hear more of it. He’s missed fourteen years of your life, but he wants to make things better, he does. He’s just not sure how.
“So you found out you have a kid?” Steve asks, his book forgotten now.
“Yeah, yesterday I found out I had a fourteen year old and then it’s been a whole process of finding out that since she’s mine I have custody technically.”
“So you took her away from all she knows?” Natasha's voice comes softly from the couch.
“I guess you could say that.”
“Did you give her a choice?” Natasha asks, harsher this time. In her eyes anyone could see the remainders of another girl that was taken from all she ever knew and replaced with a hard boiled assassin.
“In the eyes of the state she doesn’t really have a choice.”
“So you didn’t give her a choice.”
“She’s got a medical condition that was costing her family thousands a month on top of her grandparents’ conditions. I’m helping!” Tony’s voice raises for the first time this afternoon since he tried to stay calm around his kid.
“You think you’re helping, but you’re taking her from the only life she’s ever known and I’m betting you gave her no choice in this. All you might get out of this is four years with her and then she disappears from your life.” Clint says softly, not trying to upset Tony, but also hearing the points that Natasha was bringing up.
“You’re going to have to work hard to make this worth it to Y/N, Tony.” Steve says before picking up his book.

“Mr. Universe” Thoughts:
Pie in ice cream looks good on paper, but oh my go d, it’s super duper sweet. My town has a local milkshake place where their gimmick is putting whole ass slices of cake/pie in their milkshakes andidjdoejsmsjdisijs it’s so much.
Aughshdhsh, Greg is being wonderful here: attentive, caring, present.
“I spent so long trying to figure out whether or not I was Mom, now that I actually know I’m me, it’s like I have no idea who that is.” ;-; I think I talked about this in some odd post or another, but something I really commend Future for doing is showing what it’s like to be sixteen and faced with an existential identity crisis. This really is that time where kids have to reconcile their pasts with who they are now in the present and who they ultimately want to be in the future. It can be a scary process sometimes—if not most times—and here, of course, it’s heightened by the extraordinariness of Steven’s story and selfhood.
Greg with short hair is good, but I keep staring at him thinking something is wrong here firirkifiejdjdjdjs.
THE DEAR, OLD DAD SONG. AUGHNDF, MY FEEL IN G S
My favorite shot in this montage is the one of Steven snoring and Greg fondly looking over, a small smile on his face. 😭😭😭
Omg, is this Greg’s childhood home????????
Oh, my go d, the living room looks like my grandmother’s living room used to. The woolen doily on the couch. The assorted knickknacks everywhere. The wooden walls.
“Letters from Dad? They’re all unopened.” That is one of the saddest fucking lines I’ve ever heard in this show. What the actual
And then the camera zooms into one of the pictures on the wall that confirms where we are—this is Greg’s parents’ house. From the portrait alone, I get the vibe that Greg’s folks were the strict, high expectations, buttoned up shirts kind of parents. And if this is true, then boyyyy, that Rose/Greg parallel is really going to hit me in the feels.
As Steven enthuses about this new revelation in the background, Greg’s back is turned to him, but we see his face: the melancholy in it, the conflicted feelings.
“You looked just like me... only more human.” AUGH. DAMMIT, THIS SHOW.
I was talking to someone on AO3 about how Future has really made me appreciate the human episodes in SU more in hindsight, not because they were the most engaging in the series—admittedly, there are only a few I can name that stand out to me as being favorites—but because of their overarching function. These episodes were the ones in which Steven got to be half-human, in which he learned about what it was to be a human generally. But inherently, the tension has always resided in the fact that Steven is neither fully human nor fully gem. As the original show progressed, Steven and the people around him tried their best to navigate this tension, especially in the earlier seasons. You have quotes like Garnet reminding Amethyst and Pearl that Steven needs his human friends. You have Greg and Connie forming a “humans” bond, which Steven silently felt excluded from. You have Steven feeling on the outside of Onion’s group of friends. And the more Steven became necessarily drawn into the mythos of his mother and his inherited powers, the less human-centric episodes there were, which tracks with Steven’s development as the half-gem savior of Earth, but unfortunately, in the commotion, he lost out on fleshing out his humanness, too. This is a big part of the pathos in “Bismuth Casual,” which reveals to us that Steven’s forgotten how to talk to humans who aren’t Connie and his dad. And this is a huge part of the pathos in this episode, too, Steven yearning for his father’s humanity and wanting to connect to his past.
Greg’s graduation photo. ;-; He looks so sad. And is that, like, a military buzz cut?
OH, HE GOT HIS LAST NAME OFF OF A SONG 😭😭
This song is really lovely. 😭
Greg’s eyes being bright with his tears as nostalgia rushes in. 😭
“They can’t be worse than Mom’s family.” WOOF.
“I can’t believe I ever realized you’re just like Mom.” FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUFUFFJF
“I grew up in a VAN. I never went to school. I’ve never been to a doctor until two days ago.” I CSNT DO THIS. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
“My problem is that I’m a UNIVERSE.” FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKF CUFKCMDUFJC
OH MY GOD THE VAN
HOLY SHIT THE VAN FLIPPED
JESUS
HE WAS UNCONSCIOUS LONG ENOUGH FOR A TOW TRUCK TO BE CALLED???? GREG, CALL AN AMBULANCE?????
OH, GOD, GREG TRIES TO BE POSITIVE AND MOVE AWAY FROM THE DEEP EMOTIONAL STUFF, BUT IT’S PRECISELY NOT WHAT STEVEN NEEDS TO HEAR AT THE MOMENT, SO HE TUNES HIM OUT. HOLY FUCKING SHIT
NO. THIS EPISODE. OUCH
HE DELETES THE PHOTO BC GREG DE MAYO ISN’T PRESENT. FUCK FUCK FUCK.
FUCK?
I’m suing this show for emotional damages.
Final thoughts: Greg’s life, like Rose’s was as Pink, was heavily regulated to the point of suffocation, and so I think it makes sense then that Greg’s own parenting style has decidedly been the antithesis of that. He’s pretty much allowed Steven to do as he pleases and not exert that same sort of exacting control that he experienced from his own parents. But just as Greg’s parents represented an extreme in parenting, I think, too, that Greg’s on the polar end. Steven was loved and cared for, which is fundamentally the most important thing, but there was a lot of maintenance work (a la parenting) that I think Greg unfortunately wasn’t attentive to in his desire to be the total corrective to his parents. Yes, Steven should have gone to a doctor way before two days ago. Yes, Steven should have gone to at least elementary and middle school. Greg says, in response to the doctor bit, “You’re a gem. You weren’t like other kids,” but just as everyone else has done over the course of the last couple of years, he, too, has forgotten the fundamental fact that Steven is half-human.
And ofc, I think there’s absolutely something to be said about the fact that Steven, having not known his grandparents, can’t accurately judge the situation as he did with his mother and the Diamonds. I don’t think it’s fair for Steven to completely compare Greg and Rose together because he’s missing essential context, or maybe, more accurately still, he’s forgetting a crucial fact. Greg has apparently tried—for years—to reestablish contact with his parents, and the silence of the unopened letters speaks louder than words. Unlike the Diamonds, awful as they undoubtedly were, the DeMayo parents don’t appear to want reconciliation, and that’s an important distinction.
But then, God, I think about that last scene again and go feral. Greg, your kid just accidentally flipped the van, and you don’t, like, call an ambulance? Instead of being emotionally honest with him, you default into safe and sage platitudes that both of you know aren’t entirely authentic in light of everything that has happened?
But THEN, I think... well, what did I expect? This has been Greg’s modus operandi for the entirety of the series. When bad things happen, he tries his damnedest to subjugate all of his negative emotions beneath his chosen veneer of the calm, easygoing father. It used to work—it used to work so well—but not anymore.
A fact I’m not sure that Greg recognized at the end of this episode.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Thoughts: Barret as a Father Figure
I wanted to give my perspective on this topic, as it's one of many stigma-heavy thoughts about the actions of FF7 characters. I'll try to provide examples based on anecdotal experience and the circumstances surrounding Barret and Marlene's lives.
So, is Barret overall a bad father?
So, short answer: No, I don't think so.
Long answer:
Okay, anyway, anyone who has seen or played Final Fantasy 7 is probably aware of two characters: Barret Wallace and Marlene Wallace.
Tumblr media
We first see their dynamic early in both Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake. We also see a bit of this written in further works of the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 such as "On the Way To a Smile: Episode Barret and Episode Tifa".
On the surface, we see Barret's unconditional love for his daughter. So many quotes from the game reflect this:
"She's tougher than me"
"That's right, little angel, I am!"
"She's cute as a button, with the heart of an angel..."
...And many more quotes I could cite. As one more example, during the ending of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we see a moment of Marlene taking care of reunion flowers while under Elmyra's care. After looking at them, Marlene and Barret call out to each other, foreshadowing a reunion in one of the next installments of Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
All right, so we see that these two love and think the world of each other. However, some view Barret as a poor father figure to Marlene for trusting her into someone else's care multiple times throughout the story, including but not limited to:
Having Tifa care for Marlene while AVALANCHE goes after mako reactors in Midgar; having Elmyra care for Marlene while Barret joins the crew to go after Sephiroth; and after defeating Sephiroth and Meteor, trusting Cloud and Tifa to act as parental figures to Marlene while Barret heads back to Corel to atone for his past and find a new purpose besides being a man with a weapon as his right arm.
All right, so based on these moments, one could argue that Barret is not being a good father due to how often he leaves Marlene in the care of someone else, and instead of truly settling down as her caretaker, pursues purpose(s) he thinks are more important.
However, I do not fully agree with this view, nor do I fully agree with other views that Barret's incapable of being a good father. Do I think he could be a better Father to Marlene? Perhaps, yes. Many of the roles that our heroes in Final Fantasy 7 have are not done perfectly. There are examples I could discuss now, but I'll save that for later. For now, I argue the reason Barret leaves Marlene in the hands of others is that...
Life’s answers for the greater good aren’t always as simple as they seem. To do what’s best for someone you look after--in this case, Barret’s daughter--there may come a time when someone else can fill in as a guardian if the person does not have enough emotional availability to care for an individual.
Allow me to demonstrate explain, first by starting with how long Barret has been her father figure in the first place: around 4 years. Barret adopted her to take his Dyne’s place as Marlene’s father figure. Dyne, his best friend, was lost when Shinra took their usual cover-up approach when a mako reactor incident occurred in Barret and Dyne’s hometown, Corel. Instead of owning up to their mistake, Shinra decided to destroy everything remaining in Corel, including its inhabitants. Barret tried to save Dyne, but his right arm that was holding Dyne was shot by a Shinra trooper, causing him to lose control of his forearm and leading to Dyne facing an unfortunate fall into the Corel prison. Among the inhabitants in Corel, Marlene was an infant when Barret took her in as an adopted daughter. Infact, here’s her character bio in a Final Fantasy Ultimania:
Barret’s four-year-old adopted daughter. She views Barret as her real father, having no memories of her birth father, Dyne (Barret’s old friend). Marlene is remarkably composed for a young child and even occasionally runs 7th heaven by herself. - Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive Volume 2 (Pg. 063).
So based on the context the story gives us, we can conclude Barret spent 4 years looking after Marlene while residing in Midgar. He was probably in the middle of taking on odd jobs during this time, of course, and could not see her 24/7. However, such action is necessary if he is to make a living for himself, and more importantly Marlene. Ultimately that part is up to interpretation. What’s not open to interpretation is when Tifa became a part of AVALANCHE, she was the one looking after Marlene during Barret’s missions with his crewmates (Wedge, Biggs, Jessie). While we know Barret was not always around to watch Marlene, we can conclude that he knew who to entrust his daughter’s safety towards, as someone like Tifa has many motherly qualities, and above many things, wants people to live, especially people she cherishes (And of course she eventually becomes Marlene’s mother figure along with Cloud acting as the father figure when Barret heads to Corel). Eventually, when the team decides to go after Aerith at Shinra HQ, Barret entrusts Marlene to someone else once again. This time. it’s Aerith’s step-mother Elmyra, who will continue to watch over Marlene until the end of our heroes’ journey. Perhaps we’ll get a moment of reunion near the end of Final Fantasy 7 Remake when the team returns to the people they are fighting for, but for the next month Marlene is without her father.
All right, we know the endgame of Final Fantasy 7. The team survives the Lifestream-Holy-Meteor clash and they are alive, but now they must find a purpose in their new lives. While Barret stays with Cloud, Tifa, and Marlene at edge for some number of months, helping to build a new Seventh Heaven bar and home for Cloud and Tifa, he eventually decides to embark to Corel and leave Marlene under the care of Cloud and Tifa.
Wow, what a way to not look after your child that you dote on so much, right? For being her adopted father, Barret sure does leave Marlene in the hands of someone else pretty often. For some people, this can lead to the conclusion that Barret is not a good father figure to Marlene and needs to learn how to settle down and act as a real parent for her. While it can be said that Barret’s not an amazing father, I believe what he’s doing does have a realistic approach. He has no job, he doesn’t feel fully available to watch his daughter, and in the midst of this there are two people who are more than willing--and happy--to look after the person he cares about so much. If Marlene can receive a better quality-of-life from someone close for the time being, isn’t it best to give her that better life for now?
Well, I want to get a bit anecdotal about this. I come from a family of 7 children so I got 6 siblings: 2 older half-sisters, 1 younger full-blooded sister, 1 younger half-brother, and 2 younger half-sisters (5 sisters, 1 brother). Well over a decade ago when there was 4 of us, my biological father and mother divorced, and the aftermath was extremely detrimental to everyone. My mother was in a heavy state of depression and lost a lot of money; there was very little food to come by; us children were pretty much doing as we pleased with little consequence at the time; and my birth father was hardly there to support anyone but my younger sister and me.
So what action did my mother take for my older sisters? She sent them to another state for a year where our grandparents resided, as they were in a financially and mentally stable situation that could benefit my sisters for the time-being.
I could be here all day talking about the outcomes in minute detail, but to make sure that doesn’t happen, I’ll give the general aftermath: Eventually my mother recovered, found someone who became a doting step-father for all of us, and has unconditionally supported all of us in what we do with our lives.
The point here is that life throws us in complicated situations, and parents sometimes hit said situations that involve their child(ren). Many parents will absolutely dote over their children. Barret absolutely dotes over Marlene and is extremely concerned for her safety. But like Barret, there arise decisions in one’s life that involve changing guardianship for children. Some people have to work overseas and cannot take their children with them, so for a little while they can entrust that duty to someone else they are close to. If I’m going to draw parallels from other games, then the Persona series is a good example. I’ll be more specific: Persona 4. The protagonist is sent to Inaba where his uncle, Ryotaro Dojima, resides with his daughter. This happens because the protagonist’s parents’ jobs require that they be sent overseas. But his parents do not have to worry about their son’s livelihood because he’s sent to be supervised under someone that they trust, and someone they’re related to.
Conclusion
Nobody is perfect, and life is complicated. Sometimes there are roles in our life that we want to accomplish, but when it involves someone you care about, especially your own child, you want to make sure they have the best life possible. Maybe Barret would love to spend his time with Marlene as much as possible, but before he can really do that, he needs to get his own life together first. When that happens, then he can return to the person he loves more than anyone else in Gaia. Let’s always remember: Children are brought into this world, and it’s a cruel world, just like the real world. We want them to be as prepared as possible for the challenges life throws at them, so while they’re still young, look for the greatest good they can get, like Barret does.

"We'll see that kinda sent my mom on a path my mom once said when she was younger and I quote I will never never ever ever kiss a frog yuck! Boy was she wrong see my mom was never a princess growing up she lived in a beautiful neighborhood where they loved my grandfather cooking Especially his gumbo my mom and him always cooked and which set her on a path for her dream , cooking and starting her own place and she said she would name it Tiana's place but sadly my grandfather didn't live to see it because he died in world war 1 "
"Go on I'm getting interested in this story!" Betty said and I smiled
"Well my momma promised him that she would live her dream but one day she was able to get a place it had some work to do from what she told me but it was hers but then she found out she lost it while all that was happening my father came to town aka New Orleans and yes I was born and raised there anyway my father had a problem of his own he WAS a prince but he lost my grandparents kicked him out and he was broke also he really didn't know how to do anything himself. but then he meant someone he called him self the shadow man because of his power from his necklace but my father had someone with him Lawrence see the shadow man was a bad man he took the blood of my father and put it in that necklace of his and was able to turn Lawrence in to my father so he would be the prince and he turned my father in to... well a frog" and then Reggie almost chocked on his drink and everyone eyes widened
"FINALLY SOMEONE WHO PARENT TURNED IN TO AN ANIMAL " Cheryl screamed and my eyes widened
"Wait what did your parent turn in to ?" I asked Cheryl
"Oh technically my grandma and my uncles they turned in to bears "
"Huh!? We should hang out more often " and she smiled and I smiled back
"Anyway do y'all wanna keep on hearing this story? Or y'all getting tired of it ?" I asked
"No please go on!" Archie said while eating
"Well then after that there was a party for my godmother Charlotte who was my mom bestfriend and still is also who was supposed to meet the prince see she believed in love and wanted her fairy tale dream come true while at the time my mom didn't think she needed a man to make her dreams come true later that night that Charlotte meant the prince my mom found out she lost the place where she was going to have her place at and she ended up falling in to the table and Charlotte went to help her out and she put on a beautiful dress while Charlotte went back to the fake prince my mother went outside on the balcony and wished apon a wishing star and all of a sudden a frog appeared next to her that frog was my father he caught her off Guard when he said hi to her see my father thought like the frog prince he would be able to kiss a princess and turn back in to a human he told my mom the plan she hesitated at first but kissed him anyway plot twist she turned in to a frog as well and when that happened they ended up in the bayou and meant a alligator who wanted to play music and play jazz"
"See i believe that he became a frog because we have someone hear who went threw the similar type a problem but a alligator who wanted to play jazz come on now?!" Sweet pea said
"Oh really?! Ok " I said then got my phone and played a video of me and my family friend Louis who always been family to me and he looked at me shocked and I showed everyone and they were shocked to
"See told you Louis Surely know how to play jazz " and I smiled
"Ok frog girl please continue!" Reggie said
"You would be surprised how much I was called that back home but please my name is Gabriella but my friends call me bri or Ella " and then they all smiled
"So what happened next they meant a fly named ray and he lead them to mama odie she was how a put this a voodoo priestess she is really powerful for a very very very old lady she might be very old but she surely knows how to party" then I giggled a little
"Come on how old can she be to be very very old?" Jughead asked then I cleared my throat
"She is 223 years old" and Veronica dropped her fork her eyes widened
"Excuse me did you just say 223?!" Toni asked and I nodded
"Yep but anyway she gave my mother and father advice and told them they had until midnight they found out my father had to kiss Charlotte yeah I know a lot of twist and turns but then my mother taught him that he could do stuff by him self with no help and found out he was in love with my mother and tried to tell her but then got locked up in a box by the shadow man and then my mother found out she was in love with Him when that happened she went to the Mardi Gras but then thought she saw my father but it was actually Lawrence and on top of that she thought that she saw him human and with her bestfriend she was heart broken and ray tried to talk to her but she wouldn't budge she hoped away on her tiny feet as fast as she could then ray found out that wasn't him and helped my father and ended up taking the necklace that Lawrence had around his neck that was the shadow man's for his glamour and then the shadow man told the shadows to go after him he was able to get the necklace to my mother and she hopped away with it while ray stayed he might have been small but he surely had a lot of pride so much that he confronted the shadow man but shadow man ended up killing him and Louis found him on the ground while the shadow man went after my mother , my mother ended up defeating him breaking the necklace see the shadow man got that from I think some spirits or shadows but they toke him the shadow man was gone only leaving his last facial expression in the grave yard on a tombstone then my father was with Charlotte feeling her in on everything that happened and my mother got there but then Charlotte and my father ended up kissing but it didn't work it was already at midnight "
Then Cheryl gasped
"Then what happened?" Fangs asked
"Well they had a funeral for ray see he was in love with the star the wishing star Angeline she was his lover and he ended joining her making another star appear my parents didn't care weather they were frogs or human they loved eachother and at their as I put it nature wedding they kissed then turned back human leaving my mother in a beautiful green dress and my father in a green armer anyway my mother ended up making her dream come true with love of her prince naveen and my father learned not to be selfish and learned a valuable lesson they both did then they ended up having me Gabrielle ray Maldonia my middle name is named after somebody who not only saved New Orleans but also saved my parents, my parents say it's there love story but personally I call it the princess and the frog have a nice ring to it " I said
"Wow that was a beautiful story I loved it" sweet pea said
"Yeah it had twist and turns and love and pride " Veronica said
"Thanks " I said then I opened my lunch box to my gumbo and my beignets
"Wait what's that?" Jughead asked as I was pulling it it out
"Oh my momma famous beignets and gumbo these are my favorite food my mom is the best cook in New Orleans " I said then I opened my gumbo
"Y'all wanna try some ? I usually carry extra spoons but only when I'm feeling generous " I said then placed the gumbo on the middle of the table and spoons and they all looked at me
"Come on it's not poison if you taste it you will like it I promise " I said and they looked un sure at first but they all took a spoon and then toke some gumbo and they all put it in there mouth and there eyes widened and smiles appeared on there face
"Oh my god it's so delicious " Betty said licking the spoon
"Yeah your mom is a excellent cook !!" Jughead said then went back to take some more then I smacked his hand and he looked at me
"No double dipping "
"Ugh fine" he said and we all laughed Then I took my gumbo then started eating within 5 minutes I was finished and they all looked at me surprised
"Excuse me if I eat this like I'm an animal it's my favorite food " I said then they all laughed again then I took beignets out
"Girl how many do you have?" Veronica asked and i chuckled
"I always pack some extra just in case anyone wants one and apparently y'all like my moms cooking so here all of you take one these are my favorite dessert " I said then they all took one leaving me one in my box and I took it and they all took a bit out of there's
"Oh . My. God" Archie said and took another bit and i chuckled and toke a bit out of mine
"Oh it's like heaven in my mouth " Toni said eating it
"Exactly I love it" fangs said then toke another bite"
"Ugh! Why is it so good Imma need another one of these " Cheryl said then I finished mine and dusted off my hands then they all finished there's
"Sorry we toke a few only leaving you with one it was amazing!" Sweet pea said and I giggled
"No worries I can make more at home" I said then there eyes widened
"YOU MADE THESE " Betty said shocked
"Yep cooking runs in the family I was taught how to make gumbo and beignets at a young age that was my momma gumbo I like hers better then mine even tho we use the same ingredients but oh well and those beignets was made by me " I said and they smiled
"Well damn I'm going to need more" sweet pea said and I smiled
"Then I will most definitely bring y’all some of my momma food " then they all smiled
"So how was it living in New Orleans?" Fangs asked
"Oh it was the life we had parties every week I was singing with Louis also visiting my grandmama and mama odie in the bayou her teaching me the ways of voodoo since I was a child life was amazing " i said
"Then why did you move here ? I mean riverdale isn't like New Orleans " Toni asked
"I don't know I felt like I was missing something in my life my momma and daddy completely understood my momma thought it was her restaurant that she was missing but that was love as my mama odie always say you got to dig a little deeper to find out what ya need !" And I shrugged
"Do you think that you will find your prince someday?" Kevin asked
"Maybe I do maybe I don't it's not I like I'm giving up on love not giving up on love was a lesson my grandaddy taught my mother as a child my father just reminded her but if I find him I'll love him the same way my mother loves my father !" Then I smiled
"Oh just a question do any of you have powers from your parents story or pets?" I asked
"Oh I have super strength " Archie said and got up and lifted the couch where me sweet pea and Toni and fangs was sitting
"Woah!!"I said then he put us down and sat back in his seat
"I have a magic carpet ! BABA" sweet pea called and then I magic carpet came in flying to sweet pea and stood in front of him
"The carpet got a mind of its own baba go back to my locker please!" sweet pea said then the carpet came up to him and hit him in the face and I busted out laughing so did everyone else
"That ain't funny " sweet pea said and I kept laughing
"Oh that was a good one " I said and held out my hand so me and the carpet can to a high five and the carpet hit it
"Oh so now you both against me?!" Sweet pea said laughing a little
" I mean oh well !" I said then the carpet kept moving around me making me stand up
"Woah!!" I said as he was going around me and I looked at sweet pea and he looked surprised
"Sweet pea what's going on with baba?" I asked
"I don't know he have never reacted this way towards anyone before!" He said and then the carpet sat me down and then went probably back to sweet pea's locker
"What was weird it toke baba I few weeks to like me when we we first meant why did he like you all of a sudden ?" Sweet pea asked and I shrugged
"Eh anyway I can move water!" Toni said and took her water bottle and started moving her hand and water followed from her water bottle to her mouth
"Cool!"
"I'm a merman I can turn in to a merman every time I touch water my mother was a mermaid but my father is human " jughead said and I smiled
"I might be Merida daughter but I don't have powers I use my bow and arrow I also train " and I smiled
"I'm tinker bells son she is a fairy but my father is Peter Pan human so I can turn in to a fairy but also turn back human" fangs said
"I don't have powers but I surely know how to break in to stuff it's apart of my mothers story I also known for the trouble maker I always get in trouble " Betty said
"I don't have powers at all either but I have a looking glass but also I use my brain " Veronica said
"And I'm a worrier my mother saved all of China by proving that girls can fight and my father was a worrier too and I don't have powers!" Reggie said
"I don't have powers either but I'm really smart thanks to my love of books but sometimes I can go beast I mean really mean when I'm angry " Kevin said
"Wait do you have powers princess?" Sweet pea referred to me and I went really red and hid my face with my lunch box and everyone laughed and then I joined them
"Ok but really do you have powers?" Archie asked and I nodded
"Well what are they!" Betty asked smiling
"Oh uh I can do voodoo magic mama odie taught me spells I have my own spell book I also make spells" I said and there eyes widened
"Can we see ?" Sweet pea asked and I nodded
"Wait sweet pea where you get that black eye because I can heal it for you ! " I said and his eyes widened and he nodded
And I put my hand up to his eye and closed your eyes "by earth and air by fire and water so shall you hear my call powers by birth and rebirth powers of silence and peace heal his body and mind" and I opened my eyes and removed my hand and the black eye was gone
"Dude.." Archie said looking at sweet pea
"What is it gone?" He asked and I smiled and and everyone was shocked and Veronica gave sweet pea the looking glass and he looked at himself and his eyes widened and then he looked at me and back at the mirror and touched around his eye
"Oh my god is completely gone" Betty said
"How you do that " sweet pea said then give back the mirror to Veronica and then looked at me....
Part 2 coming!

“taste the waste of their god’s grace & spit your hate upon your young”
Who are you subscribed to on YouTube? A shitload of people. Do you like to go to the farmer's market? Yeah, sure. What will (or was) the color of your wedding dress be? Probably black. What's your favorite melon? I don't really like melons, actually. What was the name of the last pet of yours that died? Teddy. :( When was the last time you wished the day would just get over with? Literally every day. Seriously. It's funny, I dread fighting to sleep at night, but I also just want it to be time to sleep so time will pass. My life is just so fucking boring that I just... wait for something exciting to happen. Name one person you've never had a fight with: Tez. What are you currently listening to? "Sex Metal Barbie" by In This Moment. What would you rather have: cat or dog? I prefer cats. Who is your least favorite person in real life? Probably my sister's husband. Do you ever watch anybody's live stream of... anything, really? I'll sometimes watch live let's plays. Does your house have security cameras? No. If you go grey as you age, would you dye your hair or let it be? I'll be dyeing it. What was the last establishment you stopped going to due to bad service? What happened? I'm not sure. What soundtrack do you listen to the most? Silent Hill 2's, definitely. Was there a family secret you weren’t told about until you were an adult? I don't know if it's really a secret, but I didn't know until this year that my dad did some really dangerous drugs before us kids were born. Do you have an opinion most people you meet seem to disagree with you? Yes. What’s something you like to have many options to choose from? Food, ha ha. Feels great to have a full kitchen after a grocery trip. What’s the strangest decorative object you own? Nothing "strange" to me. What’s a thing you couldn’t imagine doing with your life right now? One biggie is having a baby. I just... could not imagine. My life would plummet. What’s been your proudest moment? Graduating in the top percentile in my high school graduating class. What’s the filthiest non-pornographic movie you’ve seen? Omfg, Sausage Party. That movie was so gross. Do you know anyone who doesn't seem to be fond of animals? Thankfully, no. I don't even think I could befriend someone who doesn't like animals. Are you planning any outings or trips anytime soon? Whereabouts? No. Do you know anyone who has a phobia of a certain animal? Yeah, like me with whale sharks. Is there a particular brand of technology/electronics that you prefer? Not really, no. Is there a singer whose voice gives you goosebumps/chills? Amy Lee's. And is there a singer whose voice you simply can't stand? Yeah, such as Bob Dylan. Are there any authors that are particularly dominant on your bookshelf? Tui T. Sutherland, but only because I read their series Wings of Fire. Have you seen any photographs or videos that made you smile today? I'm sure on Facebook at some point. Which item in your fridge are you most looking forward to consuming? Does the freezer count? If so, this Healthy Choice grilled chicken pesto bowl I have in there. I am like addicted to them. Has anyone you know got into a new relationship lately? I don't know. If you menstruate, do you experience much PMS prior to it? It varies month-to-month. Have you ever had a tattoo covered up or added to? I had my Markiplier tattoo essentially redone by a better artist. I also plan on getting my "ohana" tat covered, as well as my "how rare and beautiful it is to even exist" one (I adore the quote, but it's not an original design, which I don't like having anymore), and I want to move and redesign my "perfectly flawed" one because I want a bigger tattoo in its location. Can you remember the last time you had a sudden change of mind? Yeah; I'm pretty sure I like-like my friend Girt now, something I was never entirely sure about. When was the last time you did something on a whim? *shrug* Were you raised by both of your parents? If not, then who raised you? Well, I guess both, but Dad didn't do a lot of the teaching part about life and stuff. Have you ever began a relationship with someone you knew for less than a week? No. Has one of your friends ever tried to ‘hook you up?’ Yes. Colleen tried that with me and Girt and only succeeded in making us very uncomfortable. She said something I wanted to slap her for that I won't repeat. What is your card game of choice? Magic: The Gathering. What is your favourite books series? I think my favorite series of all time was the Shiloh trilogy. I adored both the books and movies. Do you prefer landmarks or street names when being given directions? You'd better give me landmarks, ha ha. Do you read the prologues in the beginnings of books? Of course. What was your favourite gym class moment? There're such things as GOOD gym memories in school? Do you think that ocean boardwalks are fun? Yes. Do you dread when people ask you to sign their yearbooks? No, I always thought it was very flattering that they even wanted mine. Do you have a favourite Scooby-Doo movie? The Phantom Virus one. I had the video game as a kid, too. Could never beat the damn thing. Do you think it’s cute when toddlers try to run away and fall down? No? I don't like seeing children - or anyone - fall. Do you enjoy listening to your grandparents tell stories of their past? So, this really only happened once, and it was coincidentally the day I learned of her pancreatic cancer, but before Mom told me. I had an assignment to interview someone of an older generation about how various sources of media affected their lives, like the development of TV and such, and she really got into it. It was very interesting to learn about. Do you have a crush on someone? I guess I do idfk. If so... what does his/her name begin with? "D." What attracts you to them? More than anything, the fact he's been there for me without fail. Both single and when I was with Jason and he was interested in me, he's just... been there and has made an effort since high school to be in my life in one way or another. Do they know that you like them? Not anymore, no. We dated for a few months, but I broke up with him because he felt more like my brother, so I would assume he doesn't think I do. Maybe he still is family to me. I really don't know what I feel. If they don't know, why didn't you tell them? I might at some point, idk. We just haven't talked in a while. Name two people that you miss: Jason and Megan. Have you ever seen Titanic? When I was in the hospital, yes. Everyone was crying, lmao. Have you ever swam with dolphins? No, but I would. When was the last time you had a stomachache? Now. Mother Nature finally visited me after three whole fucking months and is v angry. What's going to bed early for you? Like 7:00. Do you want to have a big family in the future? Of pets! Human kids ain't for me. What was the last thing you did that gave you a rush? Hell if I know. Favorite Nicholas Cage movie? Ghost Rider. Have you had your Covid vaccine yet? Which one, if you have? Yes. I got Moderna. If you've had your vaccine, did you experience any side effects? I did on my second dosage. I was OUT of it the day afterwards, but then I was fine. What's the next item of clothing that you intend to buy for yourself? I need new bras badly. What Facebook groups have you found the most helpful? It's called "Not Just A Pet Rock (Python regius)" and is a group for advanced ball python husbandry. It is very informative, but I will say there is a SHITLOAD of very rude elitists. Do you like your butt? Why or why not? NO because it's a PANCAKE and I want CAKE. Have you ever personally been a victim of homophobia? I personally think so. When Sara visited and we were trying to go to my older sister's so she especially could meet her, Ash entirely ignored Mom's messages. I know her homophobic husband well enough to nearly be able to guarantee he didn't want us coming over because the kids "don't need to see that." Ash kinda does what Nick says, so... you know. Do you think you’d be happier if you had a pet? I know I'm happier with pets. Who was the last person you went on a date with? Sara. Were you ever hospitalized as a little kid? No. What’s your favorite way to curl your hair? It's too short to do that. At what age did you start swearing? However old I was in 7th grade. What is something you physically can’t do? Clean up vomit lkdsjal;sdkjfa;lkwd. I can't clean up my pet's or even my own. I literally can't. My mom has to. What do like better, apples or oranges? Apples. I don't like oranges. Around the holidays, do you hope for snow? Yes!!! What are your top two favorite bands? Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica. How many people do you 100% trust? Like two. Maybe. Do you care what others think about you? Way too much. Has anyone ever called you a bitch? My grandmother has. Did you watch Teletubbies when you were younger? Omg yes, I was obsessed. Do you have any licenses other than your driver's license? I don't even have that. Could you live the rest of your life without eating meat? No. Not because I don't want to, because I do, but I would have an extreme protein deficit if I did that. Besides meat, I don't like enough protein-rich foods. Have you ever had a rolling backpack? Yes. Did you make any money today? I haven't made any money in a very, very long time. I'm only ever paid when someone hires me to take pictures for them. What was the highest place you've ever jumped from? I don't know. Definitely not very high. Have you ever gone swimming in a river? Yes. What was the last souvenir someone got you? I have zero clue. Do you have a favorite remix of a song? Hm. Perhaps this techno-y remix of "Psychosocial" by Slipknot. I don't know for sure, though. What do you think is the most saddest sounding instrument? Either the violin or piano. Do you really pay attention to the ratings on movies? Nope. Do you have a favorite species of wild cat (tiger/lion/cougar/etc.)? Probably clouded leopards aesthetics, but I think lions overall. If you had $500,000, what would you do with it? Pay off school debt as well as help Mom with various financial issues, buy new glasses, buy Mom and I a new house and car, get Venus a great tank with all the optimal supplies, get LOADS of tattoos, donate to various charities, adopt a few specific pets, travel to Yellowstone, get laser hair removal on my legs and teeth whitening... There are a lot of possibilities. Did the last person you touched lips with have a kid? Just scaly ones. :') "First loves are never really over." Is this true for you? Yeeeep... Did you like Michael Jackson before he died? I didn't really have an opinion on him. I know/like a couple songs, sure. What are some things that would make you break up with someone? If they became abusive, started doing drugs, acted arrogantly, didn't understand my mental conditions and were unwilling to be emotionally supportive, stuff like that. What was the worst breakup you've ever had? Ha, the one with Jason. For. Fucking. Sure.

The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck: The Master of the Mississippi! or “How Much Satisfaction Can There Be?”
Tumblr media
Hello everybody. I’m back to the life of scrooge mcduck.. it’s been an eternity hasn’t it and that’s for a simple reason: I had other reviews to do, especially comissions, I kept pushing this back further and further as while I love this series i put my paid work ahead of any other projects, until Kev, i.e. the guy paying for most comissions out and out asked that this be done before I got to the rest of The Ride of the Three Caballeros. It’s also why I finally put a loose schedule in place, to keep projects from slipping so the MANY retrosectives and what not I have going can move along at a steady pace and I can slot in comissions easier, 5 bucks an issue or episode if your curious. So now things are a bit tider, i’ll try to have an installment of scrooge’s storied past up a week from now on, so keep an eye out for that, minus christmas week as I have something else planned Duck Comics wise. So with all that out of the way and any exposition able to be baked into the plot proper, we can FINALLY get back to the life and times of scrooge mcduck
PREVIOUSLY ON THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SCROOGE MCDUCK:
A Young Scrooge got his inspiration, his start and also scared the crap out of some asshole scooby do style. Also his sister Hortense was adorable. SO there’s that. But eventually with some inspriation from what he didn’t realize was a ghost, Scrooge decided to head to america to find his Uncle Pothole. So that’s where we left off, with Scrooge heading to
youtube
Since then as the scrapbook page explains, Scrooge has worked his way up the Missippi to Louieville, Kentucky... which is where Rosa lives, and it is not a concidence it’s set here as a result. But much like how the Marvel staff being in new york in the 60′s lead to that universe having it’s unique and vibrant New York setting that’s lasted to this day, sometimes a creator using where they live as the basis can lead to really great and intresting stuff and here he had a valid reason as Louieville was one of the main hubs on the Mississippi river and thus a massive boomtown.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not the kind of boom town I meant but I can never say no to boomtown. But yeah it’s not only a bustling hub usually anyway, but things are extra amped up given it’s Derby time. I mean the Kentucky Derby’s no steel ball run but what could be? So naturally the crowds are booming and scroogie is impressed. I mean he’s a 13 year old boy from a poor community in Scotland. This is huge to him. But he has no time to dawdle and asks the closest random gentleman where he could find his Uncle Angus, who was mentioned last time and is the one needed for this. The guy is genuinely helpful and points him to his uncle... but as I only noticed on this read through also uses a knife to swipe his bag by cutting the handle off. It’s part of why I admire this series so much: rosa snuck so many small background gags into the margins you can always find something new reading it or always get something fresh out of it.  We also meet Gyro’s grandpa Ratchet.
Tumblr media
I mean there’s no might about it. David Byrne is rich and he’s the delightful weirdo we all deserve and the autistic icon I needed.
Tumblr media
I have no context for this, I just figured searching David Byrne in Tumblr’s Gif Search would find something delightfully batshit in that way only hec an do and I was right.
So as the tweenager enters the gambling establishment, we find Uncle Pothole, whose playing poker with local asshole and tophat enthusiast Porker Hogg...whose name keeps tripping me up as I write this as he’s not the only pig named porker I know of but is far less memorable than this one
Tumblr media
He and Pothole are playing cards, and while Porker can go on for days he can’t go on for eight weeks.. or even two days really and prepares to finish it. He puts up his boat the Dilly Dollar, which Angus takes offence to since Porker sank his. Angus offers up the location of the Dreenan White, a legendary, and real legend at that, riverboat that sank. Since Angus was a Cabin Boy on the boat, he knows where it is. So the final hand is dealt and Angus wins with five aces, mostly because Porker’s ace ejector jammed. When Scrooge questions if this is dishonest, Angus explains their under riverboat captain rules which basically means you can cheat your ass off and it’s not only expected it’s an insult NOT to. So Angus takes Scrooge with him, seeing the boy as a good luck charm and finding out to his shock Scrooge is his nephew, but gladly takes his newly found relation under his wing as he relates to his coming to america to find his fortune, having done the same.
Angus is the first of Scrooge’s many mentors and easily the best part of this chapter. He’s lively, intresting but a contrast to scrooge, someone whose not AFRAID to work but wouldn’t mind an easy victory or giving up the adventure game, as he ends up doing. He’s a lively, clever guy and very charming. I”ll get back to the mentor part of it in a bit, but needless to say in a chapter that i’ll admit, and get more into the why as we go, is not one of life and time’s better chapters, he’s a highlight.  So the two get to the Dilly Dollar while Hogg decides to follow to find where the Dreeynan Whyte is. As for why he hasn’t drudged it up Angus simply can’t as the Mighty Missisippi’ s too muddy for that, making another mark twain quoted joke about it. But Scrooge mentions the clarity pills from Ratchet, meaning he has a way to do so, and Angus is now elated and decides to head there to get his fortune, specifically near Monkey’s Elbow kentucky, which while relocated slightly to fit the story, is a very real town and an objectively great name for a town, much like Forty Fort, which is also a very real town name. Hogg overhears and after being literally booted out of the boat, as we’ll see literal asskicking is a McDuck family staple, goes to recruit some hired goons.
Tumblr media
Yes hired goons, as every good villian needs some hired goons. And these specific goons.. are a bit.. familiar. And you’ll find out who they are under the cut!
Tumblr media
Yup it’s the Secret Origin of the Beagle Boys. And if your wondering “Wait are they immortal too?” well. their not these are their grandpas. Also Hogg’s whole complaint about “wearing them if there yellow” just.. bugs me. They .. they aren’t cowards.. Grandpappy’s just being smart and knows his sons are excessively dumb, as is family tradition. They have no issue with committing crimes, they just don’t want to be arrested by the first Navy boat that finds them. That’s just.. common logic. This is one of Life and Time’s weaker atrributes: Due to being built around barks stories, that means most of his foes here are the random greedy asshats of the week Scrooge faced who had some loophole to his fortune or the grandparents of said assholes. With the exception of hte Beagles, who show up a few times, Glomgold and Soapy Slick who wihle a minor vilian is at the center of one of the best chapters of the story, most of these guys are just forgettable hooligans. Not terrible, and the stories around them are good enough to make it enjoyable but nothing really distinct from what Scrooge normally faced outside of his origin story. Really Barks was simply stronger at STORIES than he was at creating villians: As Magica, The Beagle Boys, Gladstone, Rockerduck and Glomgold all show he wasn’t untalented at it, it’s just more often than not he fell back on some random asshole.
Tumblr media
Instead of using a dedicated Rogue’s Gallery of intresting baddies, most writers of most comics just used villians of the week and maybe ONE OR TWO designated hitters. Batman’s Rogue’s gallery wasn’t big enough to form their own country at this point is what i’m saying, it just meant Rosa had to build more vilians of teh week. It dosen’t drag the story down entirely, as the story is about SCROOGE and his growth: sometimes the villians are just a secondary ingrident in a good story. But it’s still something very noticable and one of the weaker parts of the story, it’s just like I said, with the story being more on Scrooge and where a lot of his personality came from, it’s something I really didn’t notice before and really dosen’t bother me now I have. The villians are weak btu the hero is so intresting and grows so much it just dosen’t matter. Their there to provide Scrooge with opportunites to evolve, and the really good ones are saved for the best moments of that and for when a villian IS needed to change scooge as a person. So it all evens out.
So naturally the next day when the McDucks head to get the pills, Hogg’s beat them to it, and when Ratchet refused to cut cards for his stock had them beat Ratchet while they were at it. Though oddly Angus assumes he’s just passed out while Scrooge is the one to recognize someone knocked him out. You’d think a well experienced guy like Angus would know that eh whatever. Point is Hogg is ahead and Angus dosen’t have a crew... though Scrooge and Ratchet naturally volunteer since both have skin in the game: Scrooge wanted a job with Pothole anyway and Ratchet is out a job and out his pills. Angus gladly takes them on.. but accidently sets the Dominos in place for one of Comics!Scrooge’s worst behaviors down the line.
Tumblr media
Yeahhh.... Pothole is partially responsible for Scrooge criminally underpaying his staff and family. That gag.. is easily one of , if not my least faviorite part about Rosa’s work. It’s a holdover from Carl Barks work naturally, and one that makes some sense: Rosa set his work shortly after barks, so some time in the 1950s, having barks works take place around when they were written. There isn’t a strict timeline of what happened which year outside of life and times, but Rosa’s works are delieberate period pieces. That’s not a bad thing and if he’s going to base most of his stuff around stuff Barks did, then it’s a good call to make.  The issue is the execution: While with Barks it was in part because there was less income inequality, it was also clearly a bit of satire, as Donald was the every man and companies could be unfair, cheap douchebags then as they are now. IT feels more like a joke on Scrooge. Donald still puts up with a lot of stuff, but he’s more liable to complain. In the Rosa stories.. it feels more like he just makes Donald the butt monkey and it dosen’t play well as.. Donald dosen’t want to be there. He has every RIGHT not to want to be there as he’s not being paid a decent wage, not being compensated in any other ways, and could be searching for a boss who actually pays him a living wage. Donald is more the victim in Rosa’s stories but he simply doesn’t realize this, or the fact it’s even worse since Donald is you know RAISING THREE CHILDREN AND SCROOGE KNOWS THIS BUT DOES NOT PITCH IN ONE EXTRA CENT.  So already without even adding the decades on, it hasn’t aged well.. but add in the modern day business where it’s a STRUGGLE to get states to raise minimum wages, the job market was hit horribly even BEFORE Corona came and made things worse, and companies horribly abuse their employees to ludcirous extremes such as time crunch in the video game industry, black friday in retail and of course the house of nightmares that is the amazon warehouse, and I say that being a frequent use of amazon.. just because I rely on a company dosen’t mean I have to LIKE doing so in any way shape or form.
What i’m saying is Scrooge’s actions were already bad, making this joke fall flat, but it comes off as downright unfunny after all of that. Even given the times Scrooge was raised in it’s just not a funny gag that “oh ha ha a 70+ year old man ever learned right from wrong when it came to paying his family or workers”. It just paints scrooge in the worst light possible as man who never grew, in at least one aspect, from being a goddamn tweenager and is easily one of the weaker moments of an otherwise epic and well crafted saga, and as i’ve said of Rosa’s exemplary work as a whole.
Anyways the race is on and with the DIlly Dollar gaining on Hogg’s Cotton reiver witch, Hogg has them ram into the boat and flip it over. And no i’m not descrbing a sex act. In a show of competence while Blackheart Beagle’s actions send them close to the falls too he just uses the dilly dollar as a ramp. We also get a really cool flipped over panel as our heroes are waterlogged. A snag boat shows up, I assume it removes snags and dangerous objects and complains about rescuing them. .even though CLEARLY they had some kind of accident. It’s.. never a good look to complain about having to save someone’s life or livelyhood unless that someone is Tucker Carlson. Then it’s ABSOLUTLEY okay to grumble a bit about having to do the right thing.
So after a quick gag we’re introduced to a chekovs gun as a massive tree sprouts out of the river and spooks Scroogey.. and Angus who explains it’s a “sawyer”, something that happens when a dead tree falls in a river.. sinks in.. and then can rise right back up suddenly, violently and boat destroyingly.
Tumblr media
So our heroes head on and find the location and Angus dumbly assumes that Hogg, who had a clear start is just lost.. and not you know lurking in the bushes watiting to strike. And strike he does as he once again rams hard and long into the Dilly Dollar, leaving it on a sandy shore. Schwing. Our heroes are landlocked but Hogg, just to earn himself a dare to be stupid award, gives the Beagles their deed, and tells them theirs diving equipment. You can take a wild guess what happenes next.
Tumblr media
Angus understandably laughs at his misfortune because it’s funny.. and Hogg responds by dropping him down a well. Before Scrooge can raise a benefit concert to send his love down a well, Angus asks Scrooge to join him instead.. and soon we find out why as the Beagles only find a wrecked town. Turns out thats where Monkey’s Elbow WAS, and they build the new town near it.. with the farm Angus ended up at being where the wreck is now.
Our heroes explore the wreck which honestly, looks really damn impressive, a muddy destroyed riverboat hauntingly beautifully lit by candle light, which Scrooge is holding naturally. I may of had my criticisms for Rosa this chapter, and I will again, but it’s moments like this that reinforce that the man is still one of the best comic book artists i’ve ever seen and knows how to beautifully meld his art with storytelling.
Speaking of which our heroes find the safe with the money. Angus is ritch but Scrooge.. dosen’t get how he can be happy. Scroogie questions “How much satisfaction can there be in having your life’s fortune handed to you? “ It’s easily the best moment of the chapter.. while it’s only two panels before we get to Angus moving things right along... it really speaks to Scrooge’s character. Even as still a naive boy from Glasgow... his whole life has been hard work, effort working your way up. To just.. LUCK into fortune like this baffles him. To be satisfied with that and not seem to have any amibation to use it to go further, to make more of yourself. To be more. While he hasn’t quite got his love for adventure yet, we’ll get there next time, even now there’s a hunger inside him, a desire to not just get rich, that’s all fine and good.. btu to have EARNED IT. To truly feel like he made his way.
And it perfeclty makes sense with his background: Scrooge was raised with nothing, and found out at the start of the story his family had lost everything, a once glorious clan reduced to a poor starving family on the edge of Glasgow. To him it can’t just be about getting Money.. he wants to bring his clan back. To make his family happy and proud. To make sure his father’s faith as the last of their line wasn’t misplaced. He has a lot of expectation on him and that’s bred his character. Angus.. just sorta left at a young age and has been incommuincado. He dosen’t really care about family or legacy.. not that I don’t think he would’ve sent some money back to buy the castle, I just think he was never that concerned with his family’s legacy like Scrooge despite coming from a similar cloth. He wanted the money, but Scrooge cares about the money.. and his family. It’s what anchors him. What keeps him from his worst impulses and keeps him grounded.. for now anyways but that’s a ways off. Point is it really speaks to Scrooge’s character.
But soon the beagles find our heroes, and a fight breaks out.. and naturally even without years of experince yet, Scrooge is still a McDuck and while previously his fighting was based on ingunity.. this time the little runt’s just out for blood and suprises the beagles with a clump of mud and then beating the shit out of them. When one of them tries to respond by wacking him with a piece of wood... he instead breaks a collumn and with the dreenan unable to handle the mud without it... the place starts to collapse. However our heroes don’t make it out unschathed as the Beagles capture them and the gold... for some reason. Seriously Scrooge dosen’t fight back or anything nor does angus they just.. let hte beagles overpower them. WHen Scrooge fully fought the grown ass men just a few mintues ago. What the actual hell.
But we do get another Badass Scrooge Moment, as once hteir on the ship, Scrooge mentions another treasure.. which baffles Angus despite you know.. the boy clearly playing at something. Yeah whlie I do like Angus.. he can be grating in parts and here he just comes off REALLY stupid. But after being tortured by running on a boat, with the beagles mistaking Angus’ genuine confusion for being a bastard man, which naturally their impressed by, Scrooge fessses up.. and you can see exactly’s coming.. the sawyer raises the boat into the air and harpoons it. The beagles try to play off the port authority but scrooge unmaks those “infamous beagle boys”.. and thus names one of his greatest threats. Blackheart vows revenge while our heroes go for a sasparillia..though Scrooge keeps the money.. as he says the memory of that adventure is worth more than anything. As for the Gold, the goverment took it back, but did give them a reward, and Angus only dosen’t give Scrooge a share because he’d have to refloat it, but offers him a job and the dollar in two years at a bargin price. Alls well that ends well. A truly poetic way to end the chapter and prepare scrogoe for the next... TO BE CONTINUED...
FINAL TH...
Yeah.. as you probably know this is NOT the end of the chapter. Instead we go on for a bit more. And a few more pages would’ve been fine, to help bridge the gap.. we see scrooge get the Dollar at a bargin price as his uncle promised, though the deal turns out to be a bit of a lemon as the riverboat industry has dried up. But then.. we get a couple page adventure with the beagle boys, where the beagles try to steal the goverment gold scrooge is transporting, Ratchet helps him escape, and we DO get the utterly badass image of scrooge driving the boat onto land and it exploding and causing a massive flood> While that is awesome.. the pacing just takes a huge hit and it’s easily why this chapter is one of my least faviorite. It probably would’ve been better if they just had a passage of time montage of events at the start of the next chapter and ended on that bit before.. but instead it just goes on a bit and really tries my patience every time as instead of moving on to a bold new adventure.. we just get some filler to help pad things out so Rosa can get it to the right page length. I don’t blame him, sometimes shit happens, but it dosen’t make it any more fun to read.  So the Dollar is scrapped and Scrooge is back at the bottom with barely a cent to his name. But he’s resolute: since the river boating days were winding down anyway he’s going west to become a cowboy, and heads off on the Wabash Cannonball as a fireman, i.e. the guy who stokes the engines, to make his way there. So we end our story for now and again.. this would’ve been much better condensed but whatever. We’re finally done.
Final Thougts
As you could probably tell but I saved for here, and I outright even said this is one of my least faviorite chapters and one of the weakest if not the weakest. Part of it is the structure issue I mentioned, but the other part is it just.. isn’t as intresting at least to me personally. The rest of life and times have pretty unique stories that while not removed from genres Scrooge stories have covered, use the story of his rise to make them really pop as we slowly see how the iconic Scrooge we know became the legend and what shaped him that way. Here while we get bits of that, it’s mostly just a standard uncle scrooge story but with him as a kid. It’s not a BAD one, it dosen’t drag the whole of life and times down and it’s servicable but it just feels a bit more standard for Rosa’s work. Still enjoyable, but nothing really spectacular like the next two chapters. On it’s own or as one of the side stories it would’ve been fine but as part of this huge sprawling masterpiece, it’s just a bit underwhelming and just makes me eager to get to the next part every time rather than really suck me in as much as the others. Again the pacing dosen’t help with that and only makes it drag further. It just dosen’t have the weight the other ones do character wise and as such just makes me want to get to part 3 already, which naturally that story within a story dosen’t help with. Overall while not a bad comic, I don’t think any part of life and times is truly bad, it’s still not a GREAT comic like what’s to come or what came just before.
NEXT TIME ON LIFE AND TIMES: Scrooge heads out to the wild wild west.. though instead of a giant mechanical spider he fights some cattle rustlers and meets Teddy Roosevelt HELL. YES.
Until then, happy holidays and later days!

No way
Tumblr media
Ok here I am with something that was requested days ago but I suck whoops. I’m always taking requests, especially since it’s now technically my summer vacation (!) and I’m incredibly bored with nothing to do. This also took me like nine years to figure out the title for it and I was so close to leaving it untitled but I’ve been on a roll lately with them I couldn’t let that end.
Here’s the original request!
_______________________________
Just call him. Worst case he says no, and you bring someone else. You tell your mother that he was busy. She knows he’s a hockey player, he could have practice or games or other commitments that she doesn’t know about. She didn’t know he was your best friend. You have to ask him, though. Why are you nervous.
You dial his number, frantically pacing around your kitchen praying that he answers so you don’t have to call back. “How much do you love me?” you spit into the phone as soon as you hear his voice on the other end.
“What are you going to ask me to do?” You can practically hear him roll his eyes at you, picturing the smile on his face that would also accompany it if this conversation were happening in person.
You stop pacing for a minute, slightly stunned that he’s caught on to your normal tactic. “How do you know I was going to ask you to do something?”
“I have known you for five years and not once have you asked me how much I love you without following it up with a favor.” You think back to all the things you’ve asked him to do in the past; go with you to the concerts that no one else was free to, go out to dinner with you when you needed to get out of the house, he’s even come to some of your presentations for classes when he knew he had practice immediately after. You were slightly annoyed that he figured out your plan.
“Ok, fine, but, you always do the things I ask you to when I start with that, so really, this is your fault.”
“What am I doing?”
“So you’ll do it?”
“Y/N, I need to know what I’m doing before I say yes.” He laughs, knowing he’s going to end up saying yes anyway.
“So remember how I told you that we’re having that big family reunion in like two weeks?”
You hear him take in a breath, letting out a heavy sigh, “Yes.”
“Well. My mom gave me two tickets.”
“Why?”
“So remember -”
“Stop saying so remember and just tell me,” he interrupts.
“So remember how we took that picture together after the game against the Habs and I posted it on Instagram?” you ask him, ignoring his interruption.
“Yes. Why? The longer this takes you the more likely I am to say to no.”
“Ok, my Instagram got connected to my Facebook and my dad saw the picture and showed my mom and she assumed we were dating so she sent me two tickets to the family reunion for, and I quote, ‘me and my boyfriend, Matt.’ I’m sorry,” you say really fast, hoping that he won’t process what you just sad in time to say no.
“What?” he yells. You hear something land with a thud through your speaker, “Ah, fuck. Remind me to clean up my kitchen later.”
“I’m sorry,” you say again. “Please? Please, please, please? Everything is already paid for. Free flight, free food, free everything. You just have to come and pretend that we’re dating for a weekend and then I can tell my family in like a month that we’re just friends because we’re both wicked busy.” At this point, you’re bouncing up and down on your toes out of the nervousness of a negative answer.
He sighs again, “A few things. One, you’re from Chicago, you don’t say wicked. Two, what if I was busy? Three, why didn’t you tell her I wasn’t your boyfriend.”
He sounds annoyed. He’s going to say no. “One, I’ve lived here long enough that I pick up the vernacular, you would do the same thing if you lived in the south or something. Two, she would kill you. Three, she would kill me.”
He stays silent, probably trying to think of ways to kill you himself. “I would not be asking unless I really needed you to come.”
“Oh my god, fine.”
“Matthew Grzelcyk, you do love me!”
“Whatever.”
 -----------------------------
“I can’t believe you actually roped me into this,” he groans as you work your way through O’Hare Airport. You two had just landed, trying to find your parents who said they would pick you up.
“Think of it this way. You pretend that we’re dating now, and I will owe you for the next fifty years that we are friends.”
“The fact that you’re assuming we’re still going to be friends after this weekend, let alone in fifty years is absurd.”
You ignore his comment, knowing he’s cranky partially because your mom got you the earliest flight she possibly could, and because he was with you under these circumstances in the first place.
“Y/N!” You hear someone call, snapping your head into the direction of the sound. You see your twin brother running towards you, looking like a child who hadn’t seen his parent in years.
“Hey, Tommy!” You hand your bag to Matt, grabbing your brother in for a hug.
He turns to Matt, “You must be Matthew, she must have some shit on you if she convinced you to come with her.” You had to tell Tommy that this was fake. He would have killed you if you didn’t explain why you all of a sudden had a boyfriend. Your parents didn’t care, but you talk to Tommy every god damn day. No way would it not come up. He and one of your cousins, Julianne, were the only ones who knew.
“She owes me for the next fifty years of our friendship.”
“Let’s just get you home before she does something else,” Tommy says, taking yours and Matthew’s bags, “And I would start acting like a couple before we reach the car, Mom and Dad didn’t want to come in.”
Fuck. When you saw Tommy, you were hoping you could give Matt more of a crash course on the family; your grandparents had eight children, your dad was the youngest. You had 25 first cousins, ten of whom were married, with fourteen first cousins once removed of whatever your cousin’s kids were called. Your family was huge, and you weren’t sure he realized how big it actually was.
“Hope you’re as good an actor as you are hockey player,” you let out, praying this would actually work.
“Trust me. Have I ever let you down before?” He puts his arm around you as you approach the car, kissing your head as Tommy opens the trunk to throw your bags in. You have to admit, something about his act was comforting. It almost felt right. For a minute, it didn’t feel fake.
“My baby is home!” your mother shrieks as soon as you get into the car.
“And you must be Matt.” your dad echos your brother from earlier, reaching from the front seat to shake his hand. “Hurt my daughter and you’re dead.”
“Oh, my God. Dad!” He was always a protective papa bear when it came to your boyfriends, but he’s never threatened them to their face.
“I’m joking!”
“He can’t even kill a spider, let alone your boyfriend.” Tommy, jokes, knowing that if your dad wasn’t driving, he would be smacked upside the head.
The entire car ride is spent with your mother interrogating Matt about his family, your dad pretending he knows more about the Bruins other than the fact that they were your favorite team growing up. You were just hoping they didn’t ask him anything too uncomfortable: the last boyfriend you had was asked about his medical records by someone in your family. It wasn’t your parents, but it’s not like they wouldn’t ask something like that. The best thing you could do was try to keep Matt with you, Tommy, and Julianne for as much time as possible. A weekend with your family would drive anyone insane. A weekend with you, your twin and your brother wouldn’t be the worst in comparison.
“Ok, so, you two, will be staying in Y/N’s old room,” your mom says once you pull up to your childhood home.
“Did you put the air mattress in my room?” you ask, helping Tommy get the bags out of the trunk.
“No, your cousin Danny is using that in the basement. You two can share your bed,” your dad says.
Sharing a bed? Your parents are old fashion, what do they mean you’re sharing a bed with Matt? “Uh, it’s a twin bed, and Matt is kinda big.”
“Well, yes, but, no one else could take Danny in for the weekend, so unless you want to share a bed with your cousin instead of your boyfriend,” your dad starts.
“It’s fine with me, sir, as long as it’s ok with you,” Matt tells your dad. From the short car ride, it seems like your dad actually likes Matt. Who would have thought the boy he threatened as soon as he sat down in the car would be someone he actually likes.
You spend the rest of the night with just your immediate family, thankfully. The reunion was a two-day event that was going to start tomorrow, so you could spend the night quizzing Matt as needed. By the time your parents go to their room, you, Tommy, and Matt just sit in the family room with the TV on in the background. Matt had been asking Tommy the entire time about what you were like growing up; how annoying you were as a sister, the iconic fight you had at the bus stop because he was standing on your shadow, when he pulled your loose tooth out at the shoe store as payback for when you pulled his tooth out with a pair of toy plyers because he asked you to, when you nearly pushed him out the window but instead spilled milk all over the dinner table and the floor.
“So, Y/N never actually told me how you two met.”
“How did we meet?” you ask. It seems like one day he just showed up in your life and then never left.
“You don’t remember?” he asks you as you were shaking your head. “We had dinner in the dining hall, you were friends with what’s his face that was friends with one of the guys and you just came and sat with us. Everyone else left and we spent the rest of the night playing bagel hockey with the knives and I haven’t been able to get rid of you since.”
You think back to your freshman year. Matt was a junior when you were a freshman, but you don’t even remember that day in the dining hall. “I don’t,” you admit.
“It’s something I’ll never forget,” he says, getting up, “I’m going to go start getting ready for bed. I have a feeling that I’m going to need a lot of energy for tomorrow. Goodnight, guys.”
“Night,” you and Tommy say in unison.
As soon as you hear your bedroom door close upstairs, Tommy starts, “You’re sure this is fake? What aren’t you telling me?”
“What do you mean?”
“The last person to act like that around you was your ex.”
“My ex is the human equivalent of the dog shit you started crying over when you stepped in it when we were five.”
“Yes, but before we agreed he was my stepped in dog shit he acted the same way Matt did around you.”
“He’s just one of my best friends.” There was no way Matt would like you. There’s no way you liked Matt. No way.
“If you say so.”
-------------------
Your house and yard were filled with the million people that made up your immediate family. The children were running around, your cousins were in the backyard drinking, your dad and his siblings were in the kitchen and living room, while you, Matt, Tommy, Julianne, and two of your other cousins were sitting on the front porch. You were doing everything in your power to stay awake, practically falling asleep on Matt’s shoulder while he kept rubbing your arm and nearly force-feeding you in a poor attempt to try to keep you awake.
You went up to your room right after Tommy said he was sure Matt liked you. With his words ringing through your head and driving you insane, paired with the fact that Matt was sleeping in the bed next to you and at one point was spooning you, you couldn’t fall asleep until 4:30 that morning. Then, at 5:00 on the dot, your mother burst into your room, yelling about how you needed to help get everything ready for when Dad’s family was arriving at 1:00 pm. Except 1:00 pm really meant 2:00 pm or later to your dad’s family, and you had gotten almost everything done the night before. You tried to go back to sleep while Matt was resting peacefully in your bed because your mom insisted your ‘boyfriend’ doesn’t need to help, but she kept thinking of different things for you to do, to go get, to make sure you had enough of.
You were exhausted, long story short. “Babe, do you need coffee?” he whispers into your ear.
“Yes, please,” You share a quick kiss, Matt getting up to find caffeine as your other two cousins start to grill you on your ‘relationship with Matt. Julianne and Tommy stay silent, trying not to start laughing, exchanging looks that are driving you crazy. Julianne probably thinks the same thing Tommy does: they both think there’s more going on between you and Matt besides a fake relationship. You admit, you’ve always loved Matt, but that love was the same love that you had for Tommy or Jules.
Eventually, the two others leave to go find more food, leaving you, Tommy and Jules sitting there while Matt is still nowhere to be found.
“Don’t say it,” you start. You know exactly what Julianne is going to bring up, and her having the same wrong opinion as Tommy was dangerous.
“This relationship is in no way fake.” Julianne shrugs, Tommy shooting you his annoying ‘I told you so’ look.
“It’s fake, I promise.”
“It might be, but, Y/N, you like him and he likes you.”
“Not true.”
“Ok, well. He’s here with our crazy ass family. You look at each other the way Izzy and I look at each other,” Julianne starts, referencing her girlfriend, “That kiss was not something I would do with a fake date. I know what you were like with your dog-shit ex, and it was the same way you are with Matt right now.”
“Could it just be that we’re good at pretending?”
“No one would play pretend with you because you took everything too literally when we were children and you have not changed,” Tommy butts in.
“Shut up. I’m going to go find Matt with my coffee,” you tell them, getting up to leave them with their ridiculous theory. You didn’t like Matt. You couldn’t like Matt.
You finally find him in the kitchen, surrounded by your aunts and uncles. He looked so natural sitting there with your family. He was making everyone laugh with his stories from the locker room, growing up on the Garden ice with his dad working there. The cup of coffee that he was supposed to bring you, still in his hand as your entire family just stares at him in intrigue, his eyes sparkling, his dimple showing as the smile on his face is plastered there that starts to make you melt.
Wait, shit. He couldn’t make you melt. If he made you melt, that means Tommy and Julianne were right. He makes eye contact with you, but you can’t stay there looking at him. You can’t like him. You don’t like him. You practically run to your bedroom, praying he doesn’t get up and follow you until you hear him say, “Excuse me, I need to deliver this coffee to Y/N.”
“Hey, what was that about?” he asks, not even bothering to knock on your door as you pace back and forth. You like him. You fucking like him? How did this happen?
“What do you mean?” you try to play it off like you didn’t just look like a deer in headlights once he looked at you with that dumb cute face. You can’t even look him in the eyes right now. Why did you have to bring him? You could have just brought your friend and told your mother he was busy. You shouldn’t have even brought it up in the first place, because then you wouldn’t be in this situation.
“Did you hear what I just said? Y/N, why are you acting so weird?” You didn’t even notice he had been talking while you were internally freaking out.
“Because I’m sleep deprived and have a crush on you and I don’t know how to act right now!” you spit out, your mouth working faster than your mind. You were stunned that you actually just said that to him. You just told him you had a crush on him? How stupid were you? “This was just a bad idea. I shouldn’t have asked you to come with me in the first place because then I wouldn’t have realized that and Tommy and Julianne wouldn’t have gotten into my head and made me so crazy.”
You look at him. He hasn’t said anything while you’re rambling, his eyebrows still raised in shock over the bomb you just dropped on him. You just ruined your friendship with him. How are the two of you supposed to fly back to Boston and stay friends after this?
“I’m just going to go back to my family and try to not... not cry, I guess?” you say, trying to push past him.
“Y/N,” Matt starts, grabbing your arm trying to keep you from leaving.
“No, it’s-” Before you can finish, his lips find yours, kissing you. Not the kisses that he had been giving you in front of your family. The kind of kiss that would drive you crazy when you were a teenager. The kind of kiss that made you feel like you could travel through to the stars, that you would never come down from the high you were feeling in that moment. You didn’t want it to end, even though you know it would. You could hear your family downstairs start to call everyone in for dessert, Matt pulling away even though it felt like neither of you wanted to. “What?” was all you could let out.
“I might have been a pain when you asked me to come, but you have no idea how excited I was for something like this. You were the girl that I couldn’t get since we met and played bagel hockey all night.”
“This wasn’t fake for you?”
“It was only fake for me because it would be fake for you. It would be pretty pathetic on my end if I thought it was real and you didn’t. It would also be something that would need a restraining order,” he laughs, pulling you closer to him.
“So then, are we pretending still?”
“Nah, we don’t have to. Let’s go get some dessert?” he asks, leading out of your room, your mom still trying to round everyone up.
“Yeah, why not.”

Narnia Week: Day 1
alrighty so I’m a day late to Narnia Week ( @nothinggold13 )but I am going to talk about the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Both the book and movie bring so much joy and happiness to my life. When I was about seven or eight, I was a voracious reader, and I had run out of books to read. So, my mom dug through some boxes and found the Narnia series and said “why don’t you start with this?”. I’m so glad she did that.
When I first read LWW, my favorite character was Lucy. It was so easy for my little 7 year old self to relate to her and feel the wonder and childish excitement of entering a new world. I loved her relationship with Aslan, her faith and love for those around her, and the fact that she was always a dreamer and became a loved Queen. Now that I’m ten years older, I still love Lucy, but I think my favorite character now is Susan. I now fully understand the weight and responsibility both she and Peter had, and they were barely teenagers. Even though Susan can be rigid and analytical, she is also very caring and motherly, and learning to balance all of the pressure on her. I love how she grows over the course of the book, from a stressed, scared child into a free, joyful, caring queen. It makes me want to do the same someday.
Favorite quotes: “Logic! Why don’t they teach logic at these schools?” I love this little quip from the Professor. This whole scene is rather comical and meaningful when you realize that the Professor is Digory, but even in general he is right. Logically, they must assume Lucy is telling the truth by process of elimination, and the slight cynicism of it reminds me so much of my grandparents jokingly griping about the younger generation. “Peter did not feel very brave; indeed, he felt he was going to be sick. But that made no difference to what he had to do.” I think this sums Peter up so nicely. He really isn’t brave or courageous by nature in the books, especially not at this point. But he has a duty and a love for his family and for Narnia. And because of that anchor, he becomes a great king and a great warrior and is known for his chivalry. “And when they saw his face without [the muzzle] they burst out crying again and kissed it and fondled it and wiped away the blood and the foam as well as they could. And it was all more lonely and hopeless and horrid than I know how to describe.” This is just a snippet of the scene where Aslan is sacrificed and the girls mourn him, but I find the whole thing so powerful. I am not a Christian anymore for various reasons, but that doesn’t mean I’m not still deeply affected by the obvious metaphor for Jesus’s crucifixion. It is all so deeply beautiful, and you feel like you are there with Susan and Lucy, mourning this great, incomprehensible Lion. You don’t understand it, and you’re a little angry with him for giving himself up, but you love him still. “Once a King or Queen in Narnia, always a King or Queen.” This one is pretty self explanatory ;)
Book/Movie Adaptations: I’ve seen both the BBC and Disney versions. The BBC one is relatively faithful to the books and I enjoyed it as a kid but it is so dated that I find it hard to immerse myself in these days. I will praise the Disney adaptation until the day I die though. They really found the perfect cast, I especially love Skandar as Edmund. They were faithful to the themes, characters, and plots of the book, but they added some depth and enhanced the source material (which is very simplistic). I loved the way they added things to the movie because it complemented what was already in the book. The cinematography of the wardrobe scene never fails to amaze me, and the special effects still hold up so well 15 years later! Some favorite scenes: the opening with the Blitz and the goodbye at the train station, Lucy entering Narnia for the first time, Edmund in the dungeon with Mr. Tumnus, Father Christmas giving the kids their gifts, the river scene and the battle of the two parts of Peter’s mind while he stares down the wolf (shown perfectly in Mr. Beaver and Susan vocalizing those thoughts), the Witch killing Aslan (they made it so ritualistic and creepy and I loved it), the battle intercut with the resurrection scene, and of course the coronation scene at the end.
Things that have stuck with me from the book: a lot of what I’ve already mentioned, to be honest. I think the biggest thing that stuck with me was the world of Narnia itself. There is something so magical about LWW. I love the physical change from winter to spring showing the metaphorical change from evil to good. The Pevensies are so lovely in their own little ways, and they have different strengths and weaknesses which I think work together very well once they become rulers. And to a kid reading the series, the idea that you could just walk through the wardrobe and find yourself there was riveting. I wanted so badly to go to Narnia as a child, and fight my own battles and meet Aslan and all the talking beasts, and so that’s what still impacts me today.
I remember reading this book over Christmas (ironic!). I’m the youngest in my family and so because of that I always get kicked out of my room to the couch to make room for older family members, and we had a fireplace in the living room of our old house. So I distinctly remember reading this book by the light of the fire and the Christmas tree.
that is all :)

verbforverb replied to your link: The Real Problem With Cancel Culture - Tablet...
lashon hora is something that struck me as a strange thing to focus on when I first learned about it as a kid. A quirk of the law like some of the dietary commandments. with time it’s only seemed more important. and difficult! It’s easy to slip up, from forgetfulness or just for self-satisfaction. but this piece and your comments were such a good reminder of why to keep working.
Lashon hara is one that I have REALLY struggled with in the past (And present, let's all dwell in honesty here) Not to brag on myself, but I'm basically about to, I am pretty verbally clever. Words are my friend and make sense to me. IQ is bullshit for many reasons, but one of the reasons I know this is I was slated in high school as having a "high" IQ when I am extremely extremely average on most points but my verbal IQ is, well, extremely, extremely high.
Why do I bring that up? Because manipulating and bending words and concepts, convincing, using the right vocabulary to make people think the way you do, I was pretty fucking good at it. My old lawyer boss used to practice cross  debate with me because I'm a clever little weasel. I was the kid who made whatever you said sound stupid in high school. I was an unrepentant little piece of shit. I’d have a thriving ~smackdown~ following now.
So when this brave new world started to pop out, it worked pretty well for me. Even when I was first on here, I would make arguments that things were an ism, or problematic, when really the core of the issue was I didn't like it. I discovered that you can make almost ANYTHING terrible, if you think hard enough. If you have the right words. You just have to be quicker than the person you're sparring against.
It is SATISFYING and FUN to rip people apart in public. It is! Especially when you know you can win! You can make it so you have the high ground! That's half the reason this shit proliferates, is that it’s the modern day fucking Coliseum, people seeking to watch others get ripped apart and excoriated, and they love it, and if you are the gladiator, you get loads of ass pats.
But, as you followed up with:
i read a quote on here which strikes me as related, to do with the importance of lashon hora in small jewish village life. where everyone knows your name, and your family’s names, and so any gossip sticks around for generations. Now the internet gives the gossip permanence, but without the trust or community or means of self-redemption of the village. scary stuff.
God, exactly! is this what we want fandom to be like? Do we want to be afraid we said something unbelievably stupid five years ago? I hate me of five years ago, I would never agree with that bitch! When do we allow people growth? When do we allow people redemption? Like the article said: It’s not rich people suffering for this.
STORY TIME
I have been studying Judaism in earnest since I was 19 years old and decided I wanted a more “religious/observant/whatever” life than my family had. For those keeping track at home, that’s 14 years. And still, things will strike me, things I’ve read before but never came to me. I’m still learning, so much, every year, about what it means to be a Jew and how to live my life within that ethical structure.
All of this is to say that about four...ish? three? Years ago, I was reading about lashon hara, and, as Moses most certainly must have experienced, but in the light of a reading lamp from the 70s instead of a burning bush, I heard the voice of God. (dramatized)
THAT’S YOU, ASSHOLE. THE EVIL TONGUE IS YOURS.
I don’t know about that. The sort of things I bring up help reduce harm to the--
Are you seriously telling me how someone fanwrites a cartoon character is of compelling long-term harm because I’m beginning to rethink the whole ‘narrowly allowing your great grandparents to avoid being shot into a ditch” thing.
Okay, but aren’t we supposed to address injustice, or mistreatmen--
Oh,is that what you were doing? Don’t tell me, tell yourself. Tell yourself your motivation was to protect your community, and that the announcement must be made public to protect the community. Tell yourself what you did was proportionate, and just, and that it brought you no pleasure. Tell yourself it could not have been handled privately. Tell yourself it wasn’t merely something you hated. Tell yourself all those things, and see if you can swallow them.
I--
Tell yourself you didn’t just want to see someone torn down, so that others might fear opposing you.
Well, when you put it that way, I sound like an asshole.
I gave you the gift of words, and this is what you did with it.
SO ANYWAY I HAD A QUICK CHANGE. I was so fucking ashamed, knowing what kind of fucking person I had been, and how I had taken tools that should help us build a better world and used them to hurt people. I didn’t talk about it for a long time, I just stopped doing it. It’s a lot easier for me to see my motivations now. Most of the time, I go to a huge effort to handle a conflict privately. It’s still hard. i still feel knee jerk about things, I still have this desire to punish people. My temper, my sense of foolish righteousness, is, and always will be, the stone I trip over. But I don’t justify it to myself anymore. I don’t lie to myself.
Judaism drives me to be more than that.

Alone, Together | Chapter 26 | Morgan Rielly
Tumblr media
A/N:  Just wanted to thank you guys for being understanding about the once-a-week posting schedule.  Also, as always, your canon questions are really fun to answer, as are your comments about the chapters!  Feel free to keep them coming.
Hope you enjoy this chapter because the next two focus on the playoff series with the Bruins and we all know how that went L O L (I’m still not over it).
When Bee walked into the Scotiabank Arena Monday night, ready for the Leafs to face the Florida Panthers, she already had Aryne and Alannah waiting for her impatiently.  Bee hadn’t gone to the game against New York on Saturday because she was…tired.  From work.  At least that’s what she told them.
She knew that Fred and Tyler wouldn’t say a word to anyone about the fight.  She trusted them.  On Saturday, when the Leafs faced New York on Hockey Night in Canada, Bee just wasn’t up for going to the arena.  She was still emotionally drained from the night before, and even though she and Morgan had a long talk that morning, resolving a lot of things, she didn’t want to be around people.  She didn’t want to be around hockey.  He respected that.  The Leafs ended up losing in overtime, but when Morgan came home, he wasn’t in a bad mood.  Instead, he took off his suit, threw on his pajamas, and held Bee in his arms for the whole night.  He kept telling her how much he loved her; she kept telling him the same.  He kept kissing her tenderly and apologizing; she kept saying there was nothing to apologize about anymore.  He kept telling her how he wished he could give her the world, the moon and the stars – anything her heart desired and that she wanted in life; she kept saying she’d throw it all away – every bag, every shoe, every book, every moon and star in the universe – because all she wanted was him.
He asked if she would move in before the playoffs; she nodded her head and said yes.  Morgan could have cried.
“We missed you on Saturday night,” Alannah said as she and Aryne hugged Bee.  “Was everything okay?  You haven’t missed a Saturday night game in a while.”
Bee shrugged her shoulders.  “It was…um…”
“We know it wasn’t work,” Aryne put air quotes around the word, giving Bee a look.  “Did you and Morgan have a fight?”
Bee bit her lip.  “We did, but it was resolved before the game.  I was just…I don’t know…emotionally drained, I guess.”
“What was it about?” Aryne asked.
Bee shook her head.  She loved Aryne, Aryne was one of her best friends, but she didn’t want to get into it.  She didn’t want to air her dirty laundry with her boyfriend to the wife of a member of his hockey team, regardless of how close they were.  “The fact of the matter is that we talked about it and solved it.  And, um, I’m moving in.”
Both Alannah’s and Aryne’s jaws dropped.  “Um, please hold,” Aryne raised her hand dramatically.  “You’re moving into Morgan’s place?!  When?!”
“Before the playoffs,” Bee revealed.  “He’s wanted me to move in for a bit now, and, well, I finally agreed on Saturday night.”
“Bee, this is huge,” Alannah commented with a giant smile on her face.  “I mean, especially if he’s wanted you to move in for a while.  What was stopping you?”
My own fear?  She couldn’t say that out loud, at least not to them, so she settled for another shrug of her shoulders.  “I guess I just wanted to get a job first before making such a big life decision,” she said.  “I mean, it’s still technically not even a year since we met.  We’re just reaching our six-month anniversary.  No relationship I’ve ever had has ever gone this…fast.”
“Yeah, but you and Morgan, like…love each other,” Aryne said.  “Like, I don’t think I’ve ever met a couple as on the same page as you guys.  Morgan looks at you like you put the stars in the night sky, and you look at Morgan with this glimmer in your eyes and the softest smile on your face…and it honestly makes me sick,” she joked, garnering a laugh from both girls.  “But I’m serious.  You guys just sort of have this way about you, as if you’ve been together forever.  You guys get each other.  That’s the most that anybody can ask for in a relationship.”
Bee couldn’t help but smile.  “And that’s why it feels right,” she said.  If Aryne could see it – if the outside world could see it – then it must mean something, right?  “It might be…you know, quick for some people, but it feels right to us.  It feels like the natural progression of our relationship.”
“Well, I’m so happy for you,” Alannah said.  “You’re over his place so much as it is.  Why delay the inevitable?”
“That was his reasoning.”
“Aryne!” a voice called suddenly, interrupting their conversation.
Aryne spun around to see who called, and when she recognized the two people waving, she squealed and outstretched her arms to hug them.  Alannah was smiling as well but Bee had no idea who they were.  Soon, Aryne turned back towards the girls with a giant smile on her face.  “Alannah, you guys have met, but Bee – these are my in-laws!  Barb, Joe, this is my friend Briony McTavish!”
Bee’s face immediately lit up when she learned who they were.  “Mr. and Mrs. Tavares!  It’s so nice to meet you!” she shook their hands.
“Aryne has told us so much about you!” Barbara smiled.  “Are you excited for the game tonight?”
“Very,” Bee smiled.  “Gosh, you guys must be so excited to become grandparents!”
“Our first grandbaby!” Joe smiled, looking down at Aryne’s bump lovingly.  “Barbara can’t wait to be a babcha.  She’s already got a makeshift nursery set up.  Even took out some of John’s old clothes to see if they can be given some new wear.”
“I think I’ve been shopping enough to cover that,” Aryne winked at Joe.  “There’s also still the baby shower.  Maybe just take out that classic Leafs toddler jacket you bought him for one of his baby photoshoots.”
“Oh my God, I’m going to completely melt if I see that,” Alannah quipped.  “It’s like when Hank has his little Leafs onesie on.  I totally become a pile of goo.”
“Briony, Aryne tells me this is your first season with the Maple Leafs,” Barbara said.  “How have you taken to hockey so far?  Do you like it?”
“I like it when we win,” Bee joked, getting a laugh from everyone around her.  “To be honest, I’m still learning and getting used to it.  Especially the line changes.  Now I have to learn about the playoff format.  It never ends!”
“It really doesn’t,” Barb shook her head.  “John’s…what?  28 now?  It’s been 25 years since we started hockey and I’m still learning things.”
“Just wait till the game starts, Barb.  Bee knows all about the offside rule,” Aryne wiggled her eyebrows, garnering another round of laughs from the group.  Aryne turned on her heels and waved at the group to follow her.  “We should get to our seats before puck drop.”
Something must have been in the air at Scotiabank Arena that night, because by the end of the 1st period, it was already 4-2 for the Leafs.  John had scored two goals, with Patrick and Jake scoring the other two.  Aryne, Joe, and Barbara were going crazy, cheering him on and clapping, and the Sportsnet cameras shot to them to show their celebration.  With the way they were sitting – Alannah at the end, then Bee, then Aryne, then John’s parents, Bee was definitely caught on camera.  And she only realized this because Angie decided to send her the video, already uploaded onto Sportsnet’s Twitter account, of them all celebrating John’s two goals.  Bee’s Rielly jersey definitely gave every viewer an indication of who she was there for.
“I have to go to the washroom,” Aryne mentioned as John’s parents were being interviewed by one of the Sportsnet personalities.  “Will you come with me?”
“Of course,” Bee said as they both got up, letting Alannah know where they were going.
Bee began to walk up the stairs but Aryne walked down.  When Aryne noticed Bee wasn’t beside her, she looked up.  “I don’t want to walk up all those steps,” Aryne grimaced, putting a hand on her bump.  “Let’s just go to the regular ones.  I’m so tired.”
Bee could only acquiesce as she followed Aryne to the regular bathrooms, not the ones located in the friends and family section high above them on their special level.  They waited patiently in the line, and although they kept a steady conversation, Bee noticed some long stares coming their way.  She wondered if Aryne noticed them too.  When a free stall came up, Aryne bolted inside, leaving Bee to wait for her, scrolling through her phone and reading all the updates she wasn’t able to read earlier in the day because of work.  She checked her Instagram, as always, and saw a new barrage of notifications.
You have a new BFF in the Leafs squad every week.  First Lucy now Aryne.  Must be because they see how desperate you are and want nothing to do with you.
how do i become a wag like u can u help
Wearing Mo’s jersery so u can let everyone know ur with him.  Ur a joke.
The desperation R E E K S off of you!  You are never going to be as pretty as Cassie or Steph Lachance or any of those girls so quit while you’re ahead!  AND GO TO THE GYM FFS!!!!!
I know you’re not trying to be like the other wags.  That’s very noble of you, I guess.  But do you really think this crusade of yours is going to last?  There are only so many comments Morgan will be able to take about how fat you are before he finally sees it and dumps you.  You’re only getting fatter and fatter and it’s embarrassing for you and for Morgan.  Why would you put him through that?  You will never be part of the inner wag circle because of the way you look.  That’s just how it is.  That and the fact that you are bleeding Mo dry of his money.
“I’m telling you, that’s Briony McTavish,” a louder than anticipated whisper broke Bee out of her thoughts.  She looked up from her phone quickly to see three girls standing near the entrance, one with a phone in her hands directed right at her.  The second they noticed that Bee was looking at them, the girl holding the phone lowered it dramatically and put it in her purse.
Bee sighed.  “You guys can approach me, you know,” she called out to them.  “I don’t bite.”  The girls’ mouths gaped open, like they didn’t know she could speak.  She smiled politely to try to get the girls to calm down.  “I mean it girls, I don’t bite.  Did you want to speak to me?”
The girls shuffled over, looks of fear mixed with worship and complete shock adorning their faces.  Two blondes, one with straight hair and one with short curly hair, clearly couldn’t believe what was happening.  Their brunette friend – the one who had the phone in her hand – was able to find her words first.  “Sorry, we just think you’re really pretty,” she said.  “It’s nice to see a wag who isn’t a skinny blonde.”
“Well, thanks,” Bee said, unsure if she should be grateful for the compliment.  “You could have asked to like…take a picture of whatever.  I wouldn’t have minded if you had asked.  I would just appreciate it if you didn’t take creeper shots of me.”
“Sorry,” straight-blonde-hair-girl said.  “It’s just…well, we know that Morgan uploaded that picture of you on his birthday, but you’ve just been all over the blogs online--”
“The blogs?  All over?  What do you mean?”
“You know…like, people are talking about you on the bunny blogs!” straight-blonde-hair-girl clarified, like it was the best thing in the world to get talked about online.  “We know they’re bunny blogs and we should take everything they say with a grain of salt, but like, there was that whole thing where you were in Cassie’s New Years video that basically blew up all of Leafs Tumblr and the bunny blogs, and then the Vancouver pictures and then Morgan’s birthday pictures--”
“Seems like a lot of people are stealing a lot of my pictures,” Bee said sarcastically.
“It wasn’t us, we swear,” the brunette jumped in.  “Everybody is just, like, wondering who you are.  That’s all.  There are like, the mean girls who start rumours about you, but nobody listens to them.  I guess because you aren’t as open as Cassie people just want to know more.”
“Why aren’t you as open as Cassie? ” the one with the short curly blonde hair finally spoke.
Bee couldn’t believe she would ask such a question, but she also knew that these girls were going to write into those same bunny blogs the second this conversation was done with, so she had to watch what she was going to say.  “Morgan and I are just private people.  Especially Morgan.  He’s super private and super protective.  And we want to keep it that way.”
“Did Morgan help you get the job at Scotiabank?”
Bee’s body stiffened.  “How…how do you guys know I work at Scotiabank?”
“Well, like, someone Googled your name I guess, and it was on some website,” the young blonde said.  “It’s been all over the bunny blogs.”
A shiver ran up Bee’s spine.  She couldn’t believe how much information was out there about her, that they managed to find and steal from her, yet these girls still wanted to know more.  Should she just come out with her blood type?  What her favourite movie was when she was five?  Her DNA configuration?  What more could they want from her?  “No, he didn’t help me get the job.  I have a Master’s in Financial Economics.  I got the job all on my own.”
All three of the girls smiled on cue.  “Told you so!” the brunette said to the straight-blonde-hair girl.  She turned her attention back towards Bee.  “Sorry, it’s just that there was this huge thing online about whether or not you quit school when you met Morgan or if you had just finished your program, and there was this whole thing that Sydney Esiason said in a comment on Insta but everyone thinks it’s about Cassie, and some girl claiming to be from your program was all like ‘We’re just done, Briony’s one of the top students in the course’ but someone else, also apparently from your program, was like ‘She quit the second she started going out with Mo because all she’s ever done is aspire to be a wag and all she used to talk about was bagging a Leafs player’ and it was all--”
“Please don’t believe everything you read on the Internet,” she interrupted.  The girl hadn’t taken a breath since mentioning everything that was happening online – it seemed like she lived her entire life there.  More shivers ran up Bee’s spine.  To think someone in her program was engaged in this – that they even had the time to engage in this – was beyond her.  “I’m just a girl trying to work and I happen to have a professional athlete boyfriend.  That’s all I am.  There’s nothing special about me besides my Master’s degree.”
“Morgan definitely thinks there’s something special about her, and I do too,” Aryne’s voice interrupted their conversation as she made her way out of her stall.  She looked over at the girls as she washed her hands; again, their jaws dropped at the sight of John Tavares’s wife.  “You can write to all those bunny blogs and tell them Morgan’s never gonna get with them, so they need to stop,” she said, her voice strict.  “You can also tell everyone that the DMs Bee gets are hilarious and pathetic all at the same time, and we laugh at them over bottles of sauvignon franc at restaurants those girls could only dream of eating in.”
The girls’ eyes went wide.  “It’s not us--”
“I know it’s not you.  It’s all those Toronto party girls who like to cause shit and it’s the Instagram model girls who wouldn’t be able to get a contract with any legit agency if their life depended on it, but be the messenger,” Aryne winked, though her voice still strict and curt with them.  “I don’t care what you say about me.  Call me a bitch on every single bunny blog on the internet – I really don’t care.  But anybody who goes after Bee is gong to have a problem with me.”
“Will do,” the brunette smiled, a feisty look in her eyes.  “Are any of the younger Leafs single?”
Bee’s eyes went wide at the abrasiveness and audacity of the girl.  Her friends slapped at her arm as she was in a staring contest with Aryne.  “They’re not into jailbait.  But I’m sure you’ll just go and befriend Cassie to see.”  Aryne looked at Bee and grabbed her hand.  “Let’s go.  The period’s about to start and I want to actually watch the game.”
Aryne linked her arm with Bee’s, and when they were far enough away from the washroom, she looked at her.  “Don’t ever think that you need to speak to those types of girls ever again,” she warned.  “They’re not worth your time.  Everything you just said is going to go on all those bunny blogs.”
“You don’t think it will clear stuff up?” Bee asked innocently.
“It never clears stuff up,” Aryne countered.  “Rumours are still going to spread about you.  Remember when we watched the Isles game at your place and I told you that you have your priorities in order?” she asked.  Bee nodded her head.  “You still do.  But keeping them in order is harder than having them in the first place.  And those girls…their only priority is either hooking up with a hockey player or making it seem like they’ve hooked up with one.  And if they’re not trying to hook up, they want to make it seem like they’re inside their circle and friends with the wags.  They don’t even have morals.”
Bee knew that she needed to listen to Aryne.  She didn’t have a clue about any of this and she was so in over her head that she didn’t even know where to begin, what was right and what was wrong, what was appropriate and what was not.  It was a mystery to navigate this minefield; every step she took, she felt like she was going to explode, or that she’d set off something that would get the sirens ringing and the armies rushing the battlefield.  “Let’s go watch some hockey,” Bee announced, resolved to not giving it another thought.  What was more important than what those girls told her was being spread online was that John was on the verge of a hat trick and Morgan was on the verge of approaching seventy points.
“Atta girl,” Aryne wiggled her eyebrows.  “Now let’s go watch my hot husband dominate Florida.”
Dominate John did.  Only six minutes into the second period, he completed his hat trick thanks to a rebound from a shot by Morgan.  It rained hats in the arena as Bee, Alannah, Aryne, and John’s parents danced, cheered, high fived, and hugged each other in celebration, the cameras panning to them and showing them on the jumbotron for the fans to see.  The assist by Morgan meant that he was on his 69th point, and Bee wanted so desperately for him to get 70.
Then the magic happened.  Only four minutes into the third period, John scored a fourth goal.  Aryne went nuts, as did John’s parents, and rightfully so – it was his first four goal game for the Leafs.  Barbara even began to cry as the fans kept roaring their applause for their hometown boy.  Like a cherry on top of a perfect ice cream sundae of a Monday night, Zach scored the seventh goal for the Leafs, with an assist from Morgan, gaining Zach the distinction of being a 20-goal scorer and getting Morgan to a 70-point season.  Bee teared up as she hugged Alannah after the goal.  She knew he was having a career season, but he blew his previous points total out of the water – by almost 20 points.
After the game, Bee waited for Morgan in the usual spot, eagerly anticipating his arrival.  Media was taking longer than normal – she figured because of the night John had.  She checked the usual Twitter accounts for Sportsnet and TSN to see what they were saying and uploading onto their feeds.  She checked her Instagram to see more DMs, but only read Angie’s who sent her a compilation video Sportsnet had uploaded of the group celebrating all four goals.  Then, for the first time in her life, she Googled ‘puckbunny blogs tumblr’ to see if what those girls were saying – and what Aryne told her – was actually true.  Automatically, what seemed like hundreds of links popped up for her to click on, and she clicked the very first.  Right at the top of the feed, she saw her name.
I met Bee McTavish (Morgan Rielly) at the Leafs game tonight in the washroom of all places lol.  She’s a sweetheart.  Super super nice.  Doesn’t like that all her photos got posted everywhere bc she is trying to remain super private and says Morgan is super private too.  She was in the washroom with Aryne (John Tavares wife) who was much ruder.  Oh and she has a Master’s.  Never quit her course when she met Morgan. It was all lies ☺ bye!
Aw thanks anon!  Good to know!  We all knew Morgan would go for someone just like that!  It’s too bad a lot of people won’t respect their wishes.
Bee McTavish is bigger in person but pretty.  Maybe it was the jersey.  Saw her at the Leafs game tonight sitting with Aryne Tavares and John’s parents.  Went crazy after Mo got his 70th point.  I know Sportsnet showed her a bunch of times but she was on the jumbotron too after John’s fourth goal and it was really cute.  Small applause bc the crowd recognized John’s parents and wife.
I guess Mo doesn’t mind her size anon.  Thanks for the update!  She must be really close with Aryne if she sat with her and John’s parents?  Did she know them from before and that’s how she and Mo met?
Bee McTavish is lovely.  Everybody needs to get off her dick.  If you watch the videos from Sportsnet she’s so genuinely happy for Morgan and the team when they do well.  Whenever I see her at games she’s one of like, the only wags – esp the young wags – who is always paying attention to the game instead of being on insta.
Thanks anon!  Seems to go with what a lot of ppl are saying.
Those people saying Bee is nice are probably her friends she’s sent to say stuff about her.  She’s honestly not that nice.  A TOTAL social climber.  Pretends to be all cute and innocent but she’s been on the Toronto party scene for a while and was stalking Leaf players before she got with Mo.  Rumour has it she slid into Auston’s DMs (what Toronto girl hasn’t lbr) and even Willy Nylander’s before she landed Mo.  Shows how much of an idiot she is bc Willy wasn’t even in Toronto till December!!!!!
Wow ok anon thank u!!!
Whoever sent in that last ask is so incredibly dumb lol yeah she’s a known Toronto party girl yet her whole instagram feed when she was public was books, her coursework from her Master’s, and food she’d cook???  Try doing ur research next time sweetie you sound so jealous!  Ur probably trying to hook up with Mo even though he’s taken.  Just makes u a slut.  Not to mention a homewrecker.
I just post all my asks.  Not necessarily what I believe.
Bee couldn’t help but snort as she swiped to delete the tab.  There was no way she was going down that rabbit hole.  She stuffed her phone back into her pocket and waited impatiently for Morgan.  When he finally came out, with John, Zach, and Tyler in tow, she couldn’t help the giant smile that appeared on her face as he walked towards her.
“You ready to go?” he said, extending his hand towards hers.
She grasped onto it tightly.  “Come here.”
When he was close, she stood on her toes so she could reach him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders before giving him a long, lingering kiss.  “You wanna talk about it?” she whispered.
“Talk about what?”
She smiled slightly.  “Mr. Seventy-point season.”  A smile crept upon his lips as he closed his eyes and shook his head – his version of ‘I don’t want to make a big deal out of it.’  But Bee was going to make a big deal out of this.  “I’m very proud of you,” she whispered quietly, so only he could hear.  “I’m so, so proud of you.”
Morgan bent down to kiss her again.  “That’s all that matters,” he whispered.
“What?”
“That you’re proud.”
“I’m always proud of you.”
“I know you are, but it’s especially important tonight.”
“Because you hit seventy points tonight?” she giggled.
“Stoooooppppp,” Morgan buried his head into the crook of her neck.  “Stop saying it.”
“Stop saying what?  That you hit seventy points this season?” she smirked, moving away slightly so she could look at him again
“Noooo no no no ,” he shook his head before bending down to kiss her again.  “Is that the only way you’re gonna stop saying it?”
“Mhm,” she nodded her head.
“Am I gonna have to kiss you all night?”
“You tell me Mr. Rielly,” she pecked at his lips.  “What do you mean ‘it’, anyway?  Do you mean the fact that you got sev--”
He kissed her again, dragging her quickly towards the door.  “I gotta get you home quick.”
***
“Okay, I can help carry all the garment bags down.”
“I’ll follow behind you with the box of handbags.”
“I’ve got the shoes.”
“Make sure all the books are taken.  We may need to take two trips.”
“Naz, you can just sit there and look pretty.”
“HEY!” Naz yelled in protest to Morgan’s comment.  John, Jake, Mason, and Tyler laughed at the scowl on Naz’s face as Ashley stuck her tongue out at the boys.  “Are we forgetting these guns can b--”
“Do not brag about how much you can bench press right now or else I’m going to punch you in the throat,” Jake grimaced.  “Can we just move all this stuff to Morgan’s?  Because the quicker we do so the quicker we can eat Chinese food.”
“Yes please, because baby’s hungry,” Aryne rubbed her belly.
The boys grabbed their designated boxes of Bee’s things to bring down the moving elevator, and the girls grabbed the various garment bags and made their way down the main elevator’s to Lucy and Aryne’s waiting SUVs in the parking garage.  Once they loaded everything in, Bee and Angie drove with Lucy to Morgan’s apartment, while Ashley hitched a ride with Aryne.  The boys ended up taking a second trip up to the apartment to get the remainder of Bee’s things before packing everything into Naz’s SUV and driving to Morgan’s apartment.  They were lucky that Bee didn’t have a lot of things, comparably – no furniture to move, no giant ottomans or kitchen tools and accessories to pack away – just her half-bookshelf, taken from her old apartment, with its modest stack of books she’d added to sparingly during her time at Naz and Ashley’s apartment.
When the boys arrived at Morgan’s apartment, the girls were already rearranging the closet to incorporate Bee’s clothing.  They shoved all his game-day suits to one side while they hung her work clothes on the top bar and her more casual clothes that still deserved a hanger on the bottom bar.  Angie called out to Morgan that it was time to invest in another shoe rack where his Jordan’s collection wouldn’t take it over.  Aryne was busy ordering the Chinese food.  Ashley rearranged the bathroom drawers so all of Bee’s products could fit.  The boys kept Bee’s bookshelf right next to the entertainment centre – he’d be buying bigger bookshelves soon, anyway.  They decided to set the table while the girls continued to work on the closet behind the closed bedroom door.
“Did you consent to whatever’s going on in there?” Tyler asked as they all heard a loud thump coming from his bedroom.  “They could be painting your room purple for all you know.  They could be installing a Habs mural.  A giant picture of Randy from Trailer Park Boys on your ceiling.”
Morgan shrugged his shoulders.  Jake rolled his eyes.  “Even if he didn’t, what’s he gonna say?  She could paint the walls neon green and he’d nod and smile and say he loved it,” Jake said.
“Let’s not act like girls don’t run the world,” John commented with a chuckle.  “Our wives definitely run our lives.”
“You got that right,” Naz piped up.  “The other day Ashley had a craving for anchovies.   Anchovies.  Guess who had to go out to go buy anchovies at midnight or else her brain was going to explode.”
“That’s why I remain a bachelor,” Tyler said.  He turned dramatically towards Mason.  “Unless you have a sister?”
“Only a brother, dude.”
“And I reiterate, that’s why I remain a bachelor.”
Morgan’s phone buzzed, indicating that the Chinese food had been delivered.  “You girls have three minutes until the food is here!” he yelled as he shoved his phone into his pocket.  “Can you be a dear and come help me with the bags?” he asked Jake, who nodded his head.  “And can you guys go check on them?  Make sure they’re actually not installing a picture of Randy on my ceiling or throwing out any of my clothes?”
When Morgan and Jake came through the door again with the Chinese food, everybody was out in the main area.  Aryne was already sitting at the table while everyone else mingled about; Bee was grabbing something out of the fridge – probably a hot sauce – and Tyler and John were leaning up against the couch.  Aryne saw them first and she began clapping when she saw the food.  “It’s here!”
Everybody gathered around the table quickly.  Bee helped herself to too much Cantonese chow mein.  Everything was passed around – the chicken balls, the sweet and sour sauce, the chicken fried rice, the plain steamed rice, the spring rolls, the beef with broccoli, the kung pao shrimp and the Szechuan chicken.  Everybody’s plate and glass was full of goodness.  For a while everyone was even silent because they were stuffing food into their faces.  It was Tyler who broke the silence.  “Have you guys seen how well the Raptors are doing?  Their post-season is gonna be amazing.”
Everybody nodded their heads.  “Hopefully ours is gonna be equally as amazing,” Naz commented.
“You think we’ll be able to go to some games?” Aryne asked her husband.
“Aryne, are you aware of who your husband is?” Tyler asked, causing the table to laugh.  “He’s John Tavares.  He can walk into anywhere and get whatever he wants.”
“Raptors tickets are gonna be the hottest commodity in town if they do well,” Mason commented.  “Good luck with that.”
“I’m sure Masai will hook up Kyle with something,” Naz said.  “Besides, Bee’s gotta go to her first Raptor’s game.”
The mention of her name gave Bee an opportunity to look at everyone – really look at all the people surrounding her – and she felt a pang of gratitude hit her chest.  There was excitement, of course, of moving in with Morgan – of knowing that, when their friends were gone, she wouldn’t have an apartment to go back to; that this was her apartment too now.  There was thankfulness, of course, for everyone helping her to move her things, despite how little she had and how quickly it took them to do it – she barely needed to bribe them with a Chinese food dinner before they said yes to helping.  But more than anything, gratitude.  Gratitude for them surrounding her.  Gratitude for their help and support.
Gratitude that they were her family.

Okay, so I FINALLY had a chance to watch the season finale of AOS (real life hit hard). Could you catch me up to speed with current spec theories?! Like where is Fitz?! Do we know anything about S7 so far besides that it’s set in the 40’s?
Hi Anon!
Oh boy, I’ll do my best here.
First in terms of what do we know?
Season 7′s filming was on Major lock down like I’ve never seen.
The first episode of the Season Screened at D23 and it did indeed confirm time travel and the team is going to be time hopping in order to stop the Chronicoms.  Time periods we’re looking at are also the 50′s, 60′s, 80′s, and perhaps a jaunt into the team/shows past.
Fitz is in hiding, I’ll get to my theories on that later, and one of the bombs that dropped at D23 was the Iain will not be a regular in Season 7.   We knew he was working multiple projects and I’ll note again that recurring vs regular is based on Availability of an Actor not necessarily how much they are in it.  Joel is in 10/11 of the Episodes but is still recurring.
As of right now we have a list of Possible Episodes Titles that have leaked and we also found the possible writer/directors with those Episodes.  HERE is my post on those.  The big HAZZAH here is Lil will be Directing 9, As I Have Always Been confirmed my Hallmark.  Though note some of the others may be incorrect.
Agent Carter’s Enver Gjokaj will be in a decent number of episodes.  He got a wrap gift so he’s totally not a one and done.   How Sousa joins the party is yet to be seen but I CAN NOT WAIT.  Also confirmed is Hailey will not be recurring as Agent Carter.
We are set to return Summer 2020 so I’m looking at May again.
Theory Time!   These I think are my biggest theories I’ve got going right now.
My “Die on this Hill” theory for the season is that during “We had time” Fitzsimmons had a child and that she/he (I think it’s a she) is in hiding with Fitz.   So FItz is in hiding to protect their child as well as because he is a target of the Chronicoms.   This kind of story also works for Iain who was coming back and filming what/when he could, him filming with limited cast/crew would allow him to make up a lot of time.  I will also note this is my polarizing theory of the season where some of the fandom are ready to throw rotten fruit at me and others on fully on the train.
Elizabeth and Iain left SDCC early with Jed and Mo for a special day of filming that lasted like 13 hours.  So I’m expecting something HUGE in the finale or they were doing some make up scenes as well.
Fitzsimmons will leave Shield in the end.
“Not all endings are happy,” This is a quote from one of the crew members on a post right as they were wrapping.  I feel that we are going to lose a main character at the end and I feel its going to be Mack.  How Henry responded to multiple interviews at SDCC is my big tip.   He was not happy with his end.
With Mack’s fall the series will end with Daisy becoming Director as Coulson has been grooming her for.
We are going to see Deke grow by leaps and bounds in Season 7.  He’ll remain a lot of the comic relief but I also see him growing a lot closer to Jemma (if she confides in anyone it will be him) but he’ll also really discover what it means to be a Fitzsimmons and find his place in Shield and his family.  I do have a healthy fear he is on a Mace like Hero Arc and wouldn’t blink to sacrifice himself, especially for his grandparents.  Right now I”m 50/50 if he makes it.
Philinda will have an interesting arc this season.  I feel we’ll see May more in a Season 1 mode as she deals with her grief and just the overall weirdness of having Robo Coulson Around.
As we travel through time we’ll see some familiar faces and arcs pop back up.  High on my list are Koenig (one of them), Stoner, Ward, Garrett (I know Bill has passed but they could just do a flashback or something), Mace, Robbie, Radcliffe, AIDA, Trip, Cal, Jaiying, Hunter (Adrianne has confirmed she won’t be back), Piper, Davis, and some important people I know I’m forgetting.
They won’t be Time Traveling all season, I suspect at some point in the 6-8 range the real big bad crashes the party and the mission will change from saving x point in history to stopping hello new baddie.
Top candidates for Kidnapping Robo Coulson, Fitz, and Enoch.
At some point someone on the team is going to mess up, fix or change something they shouldn’t, and they’ll have some serious complications from this.
Overall I think this time the ending will be bittersweet.   The show runners said at SDCC they pulled a lot from their experiences as a show family and incorporated those events into the final season.  Another point for us seeing Baby/Child Fitzsimmons at some point, they had a few production babies over the 7 Seasons.
Its going to be bitter for those we lose and I’m pretty sure in seeing the team split up.  I feel at the very least we see Fitzsimmons move on and my money is currently on May taking on the Academy in Coulson’s name.  But at the same time sweet to see the stories that are open and to come, the Fitzsimmons family future, and knowing the Academy is securing all of their legacies with a new generation.  I can also see Daisy, Elena, and Deke remaining with Shield.   All I want for Robo Coulson is whatever he wants to do at the end is honored.

task 02 | lawson family tree
mother | ellen pompeo - cherisse lawson (née mayer). father | mike beach - marshal ‘bear’ lawson. younger brother | justice smith - jussie lawson.
how did your family come to be?
well, if you ask pops he swept ma off her feet with his - and i quote - sweet moves. ma’ll tell you she danced with him out of pity because he was so bad at it. either way, they met at a block party and that was kind of it? dad was seventeen (17) and ma was sixteen (16), so they started out pretty young but they’ve both said they always knew they’d end up together. it wasn’t, like, a love as first sight thing or anything, but more like an instantaneous connection. for a long time, they stayed friends - mostly ‘cause ma’s a stubborn little shit (obviously that’s where i get it). eventually she stopped fighting the fact that pops is a charming ass man (also where i get it) and the rest just fell together, really. they woulda had kids a lot earlier, but dad got into some trouble and ended up doing some time a few months after they got married. he ended up in a work release program, which is how he got into the restaurant thing. when he was fully released he did everything he could to get himself back on track and in the place he felt he needed to be to start a family. three years later, here i came bustin’ into the world. another three years and my brother was born. it’s been a blast ever since.
is everyone treated equally in the family?
100%, absolutely. i mean, if you ever ask in front of my parents i’ll swear up and down jussie is the favorite. he’s the baby and the smart one, so he gets spoiled. truth be told, though, they were always so insanely fair with us. i put my parents through hell and they never stopped being supportive and loving. they put me in my place, sure, but it came from a place of love and they made sure i knew it even if i didn’t want to hear it. lord knows i got jussie into plenty of trouble, too, so he can probably attest to that as well. discipline in the lawson home was always fair and we’re both spoiled little shits, so yeah - we’re all about that equity baby.
was the dynamic always as it is now?
no, not always. there were a few years where things were tense thanks to yours truly. i mean, we always loved each other, you know? i just didn’t know how to deal with some things that happened to me and ended up dealing with it in ways that weren’t the healthiest, which meant i pushed my family away. once i got back to a place where i could deal with my shit, we came back closer and stronger than ever. i’m beyond lucky to have had them through it all, especially considering how shitty i was back then.
your place in the family is unique, what is your relation to everyone?
if we’re talking immediate family, i’m the oldest and juss is my only sibling. all of our grandparents are still kickin’. mammy (paternal grandmother) is honestly more in shape than i am. ma and pops have six siblings all together - pops has four and ma has two. all of my aunts and uncles have at least two kids, so we’ve never been short on cousins. we’re all pretty close, too - holidays are always a giant, loud, chaotic thing with all of us in one house. otherwise, the neighborhood i grew up in was basically a big extension of that immediate family. i knew all my neighbors and their neighbors and their neighbors and then all their kids and grandkids and great grandkids. the only thing bigger and louder than a lawson family gathering was a lawson block party. ma and pops were always super into making sure everyone in the community was fed and taken care of and supported - it was the coolest part of childhood, honestly - and as soon as i was old enough, i threw myself into it too.
what is your relationship like with your parents now?
oh, we’re stupid close. we facetime every day or talk on the phone, at least. we’ve gotten pretty good at the whole long distance family thing and keeping in touch. every once in a while juss and i get together to make a little care package to send ma and pops - just of little things that make us think of them and pictures of what we’ve been up to. they do the same, too.
what has all of this taught you?
you need family. be it chosen, biological - whatever. as much as you may feel like you can do something on your own or they’re better off without you complicating and screwing things up, you’re wrong. it’s okay to need people and to accept help from family. if there was ever anyone who could see you vulnerable and still love you, it’s your family.
