Hello hello folks, Miyazaki here! We've got a big update for this month--we've rolled out Mythaura's battle demo and are so excited for you to give it a try!

Battle Demo Guide

Welcome to Mythaura's battle demo! Here's a concise guide to help you navigate the 3v3 battles and make strategic decisions:

1. Battle Setup

The battle takes place between your beasts (on the left) and the enemy beasts (on the right) and ends when one side is defeated. For this demo, all beasts in this demo are level 1 and have average size for their species.

2. Beast Details

Click on the info icon in the corner of your beast's avatar to view its details. From here, you can read their abilities and see a breakdown of their stats.

3. Elements

Each beast has 2 elements, including a species element that is always shown. You won't know your opponent's secondary element.

For this demo, a beast's secondary element is currently randomized.

Check the elements page for more information on elements and for a breakdown of type effectiveness.

4. Turn Actions

Each turn, your beasts can perform one of the following actions:

Use an ability or surge ability.

Defend themselves or an ally.

Rest to regain stamina.

Once all players have submitted their actions, the round is resolved with the following priority:

Resting beasts rest first.

Defending beasts defend next.

Abilities are resolved.

Within each action type, the order is determined by ability priority, beast speed, weight (with lightest going first), and then randomly if all those values are the same.

5. Abilities

Beasts start with 4 abilities: one surge ability (species-based), one neutral ability, and one ability for each element. If a beast's species and individual element match, they will have 3 abilities.

Abilities with elements can be super effective or resisted, affecting the damage dealt. Pay attention to moves' effectiveness and your foes' abilities for better results.

Abilities incur fatigue and the fatigue cost is shown on the ability button.

Abilities will generally have a small chance to miss or be a critical hit. The chances of these can vary per ability.

Abilities have 3 types: Combat, Projection, and Support.

Combat: Attack vs Defense

Projection: Focus vs Barrier

Support: Non-damage dealing abilities

6. Surge Abilities

When a beast's surge meter is full, they can use their surge ability for a powerful effect. Surge abilities don't incur fatigue and never miss. After using a surge ability, the surge meter goes back to 0%. Please note that the surge abilities in this demo may be changed before the game’s official launch.

7. Defending

Beasts can defend themselves or allies, reducing incoming damage by 75% for that turn. This effect does not stack. Defending slightly charges the defender's surge meter and recovers a small amount of stamina.

8. Resting

Resting recovers a substantial amount of stamina and a small amount of health.

Remember, understanding abilities, elements, defending, and resting will help you make the best decisions during battles. We have provided an in-app form you can use to report bugs and provide feedback. Good luck and enjoy the demo!

A "quick queue" button that queues with the first available other quick-queue person and does not require a PIN

Oh my. You’re pretty great at flattery.

Yeah! I’m owner/artist for Mythaura. It’s real exciting seeing it grow from concept into a real game.

Pets can be assigned roles, these roles enable you as the player to do things like craft items, explore for loot, and gather food and other items.

So far I have three thought up, two of them split off into more specialized roles. I’m sure I’ll come up with more the more I flesh out the exploring, crafting, and gathering mechanics. I would love some feedback on these, ideas and suggestions are much appreciated.

Explorer

Explorers go out into the wilderness in search of Ruins (dungeons essentially, I’ll make a post about them soon) and other such things to snoop around in and bring back loot. 

This then splits off into the Scout and Delver roles 

Scouts give their team a higher chance of encountering Ruins and shorten the time their team takes exploring them.

Delvers increase the chance of their team completing a Ruin and getting better loot.

Craftsman

Craftsmen enable the player to craft items, and as the craftsman levels more things are made available to craft. 

This then splits off into Alchemist and Cooks.

Alchemists look into the science of magic and the magical sciences and have such things as species-change items and sex-change items items available for them to craft at higher levels.

Cooks use food items found by Gatherers and Explorers to whip up various dishes that better fill stomachs and possibly even offer special perks. 

Gatherers

Gatherers collect food for everyone, Herbivores bring back more plants, Carnivores bring back more meat, and Omnivores bring back a bit of both.

Mythaura Age of Use Policy Update

Starting today, March 1, 2023, Mythaura users must be 16 years of age in order to use the site and/or participate in the Discord community. This policy will be enforced starting immediately.

Article 8 of the EU's GDPR forbids collection of data from anyone under the age of 16. The GDPR sets a general age of consent at 16, which means a business cannot "legally process the data of a data subject 15 years-old or younger." In cases where you work with the data of children under 16, you can only process the data with permission from their parent or guardian.

We have updated our About Page with some more info about the game and features we have planned. There will be even more updates to this page as we continue to develop Mythaura’s core features.

Feature Spotlight: Elements

Mythaura is a world of magical creatures, each born with two elements. These cosmic elements are mysterious and powerful, imbuing the beasts of Mythaura with abilities that give them unique powers.

The first element is based on their species. For example, Griffins have the Air element, granting them incredible flight speed and agility. In addition to their species element, each beast is also given a second element that is cosmically-aligned with the time of day they were born. When both the species element and the personal element of a beast are the same, both the strengths and weaknesses of that element are compounded.

Elements are an important part of the day-to-day life of all Mythaurans. They are part of each beast’s identity, can determine what sorts of jobs they are well suited for, and can turn the tide in battle.

Beast Sizes

Each beast species in Mythaura has standard ranges for height and weight; a beast's size is determined at birth, influenced in part by genetics from its parents, in part by other non-hereditary factors. All beasts will always fall within this predetermined size range: as shown in the example below, the largest adult Basilisk will never be larger than the smallest adult Ryu.

All beasts will receive stat bonuses and penalties based on how they size up against the species's average size, and can use these stats to strategic advantage in battle.

2022 Year in Review

2022 was a big year for Mythaura! From the change of ownership in May to the newest addition to our team hired in December not a month went by without something new happening. Here’s a general recap of what the dev team got up to this year:

Beast Creator Demo Update

The Beast Creator Demo has gotten a bit of an update!

When creating a Beast, users now have the option between either a solid color background or a Mythaura setting background (as of right now we have two: Spryhawk Mountains and Fledgling Forest; more to come in future updates). Users also have the option to have a drop shadow on their beast or not.

We hope that these changes will provide a more customizable Beast Creator Demo experience!

We’ve received a lot of questions from the community since Koa and Sark took ownership of Mythaura earlier this year. We’ve put together a FAQ page with some of the most commonly asked questions that we receive on Discord and Tumblr.

For the time being, our official Discord is still the best place for any questions that you may have. We will be working on a Contact Us form during December and hope to have it ready in time for our January 1 update.

Beast Design Contest

We’re back with another Beast Design Contest! We’re looking forward to all the fantastic creations that this community comes up with.

Here are the parameters:

Each individual can submit one (1) Beast option for consideration

Any species fine (babies included)

Fill out Google form; provide both a picture and the preview code

We’ll pick three winners to have their Beasts featured on the front page for Quarter 3 (January 1 - March 31). Winners will also receive:

Hiring Freelance Artist

Earlier this month we made a post looking for freelance illustrators to work on Mythaura assets. Previously we had only had the opportunity open to residents of the United States due to concerns about differing international contractor laws. We’re happy to share that we have now extended this opportunity to artists based outside of the United States as well! International applicants are more than welcome to apply.

Applicants must be 18 years or older.

Responsibilities

Create and deliver PSD files that meet the creative brief.

Work with our senior artists and writers to ensure visual consistency.

Regularly demonstrate and update your work in progress.

Follow creative & technical briefs with regard to schedule.

Accurately quote and then produce work within the quoted timeframe.

Actively participate in an online team environment (currently Discord & Asana).

Required Skills and Experience

Must be able to match Mythaura’s 2D cel-shaded style.

Must be familiar with masks, layers, and templates. Photoshop expertise is a strong - plus but not mandatory so long as your program of choice can open and save in PSD format.

Real-world understanding of proportion, depth, scale, and physical space. A strong understanding of coloring and shading, and an accurate understanding of animal anatomy.

Organizational and time-management skills.

Ability to maturely handle critiques and change requests.

Code Updates

Items purchased through the Ko-fi shop will now automatically show in the reward lookup tool (with the exception of sponsored items, which still need to be created first).

Fix for tooltips and dropdowns to not clip over edges.

Fix for breeding demo always using one parent’s specials in some cases.

Fixed a bug where the reward lookup tool would sometimes have to be closed twice before it would actually close.

The menu can now stay open and be collapsed at will.

Adjustments to headers and text to make them easier to read.

Fixed a bug that made it so some emails would not work in the lookup tool.

Added tiered species rarity to the breeding predictor, making it so higher-tier hybrids show up less often when bred to a lower-tier partner.

Feature Spotlight: Gear & Apparel

In Mythaura, players will be able to dress their beasts with various wearable items. These will be categorized into two distinct types of items: Gear and Apparel. While they both change the way your beast appears, they serve very different functions in the game.

Gear...

belongs to one of six distinct slots. (head, body, front legs, rear legs, tail, & appendages)

is limited to one gear piece per slot.

has stats & abilities associated with it that augment your beast when battling in the Arena or exploring a Wild Area. Sets often have bonuses for wearing the entire set.

can be hidden for those who want the stats but don't like how a specific gear piece looks.

are for adults only and generally will be for all breeds, with exceptions for things like heritage armor sets.

can be crafted & improved at the Terragon’s forge or purchased from various NPCs or players, or earned as loot/rewards.

Apparel…

does not belong to or use up any slot.

is cosmetic only with no stats or modifiers associated with wearing them.

can have a generous amount equipped (actual limit TBD).

can be made for any number of breeds & ages. For example, only for young Dragons or for adult Kirins and Unicorns. Some may start limited for a single breed, and be expanded later into multiple bases.

is obtained by buying from various NPCs in-game, from other players, or earned as loot/rewards.

Ko-fi Shop Restructure

Now that the shop has matured and we have some orders under our belt, we will be restructuring the custom items in the shop.

Design a Skin is being removed from the shop.

All Custom Gear is being removed from the shop and replaced with Custom Apparel with some new pricing and features. When you sponsor an apparel item you will select a base (e.g. Adult Quetzal) that the apparel applies to. Visit the shop to see the updated prices and categories.

Companion Sponsorship! We are going to offer monsters in the shop. These will be tamable companions that can be battled in the Wild Areas or purchased from shops with in-game currency.

A note about recolors & multiple bases

We can offer recolors with an additional fee of $20 per recolor (up to 3 total recolors). We can also add additional bases at a rate of $20 per base. The intake form sent to you after sponsoring an item has been updated to allow for selecting these add-ons. These must be provided upfront, you cannot add more recolors or bases once the intake form is submitted. If you request any of these add-ons, we will reach out to you with instructions on how to pay for the additional work. Bulk pricing for those interested in apparel being made for every breed is available.

Sponsors will get 5 copies of each of their recolors.

Code Update

October was a huge month for one of our key features - the concept of battling your beasts with another player. Over 5,000 lines of code have been added this month, nearly all of it for battling!

We’ve begun the process of adding descriptive alt text to our items and implementing accessibility features. This will be an ongoing process, but our programmers are both well versed in ADA & WCAG 2.1 compliance and we want to make sure Mythaura will be an accessible game for all to enjoy.

Mythaura Speculations/Early Headcanons questionare

How long is the lifespan of each beast? 

Do they live in clans, packs or flocks? 

Are there any major size differences between different species?

What kind of magic exists in the universe? (element control, necromancy, healing magic...)

Do dragons breathe only fire or also other additional elements? (ice, venom, raw magic)

Are unicorns magical? What kind of magic they can use?

How about kirins and quetzals? 

Or creatures that aren’t typically known as magical? 

Are dragons known to hoard treasure? Or does it depend on the individual?

Do non-sentient beasts exist in the universe? 

Are there humans in the universe?

Scorpius, a talented astronomer. Dark as a nigth sky, warm as a midday sun and swift as a peregrine falcon. He guards the night skies and lone travelers. He may be a newcomer in the Solar Order, but Scorpius has proven to be a very loyal member.

Verléieren, retired warrior, now a record keeper. Used to be a mighty paladin, but now she is too old and weak for fighting. She also takes care of the library.

Valor & Belenus

Some Mythaura “clan leaders” concepts! The top two are my favourite ones. 

I’m planning to reuse my idea of “a sun paladins” from my Clanheart Clan in Mythaura. I need to work with the lore once we know more about the official lore. But here’s the simple version:

The Solar Order is thousands of years old paladin order who seeks to kill all evil beings from the World. They're housed in an old fortress by a big mountain, it is said that the first leader of the order built it herself. She is long gone now. But the newest leader has proven to be as strong and wise as the legendary kirin was during his prime. 

Before Valor raised to power, the Order was in shambles. But thanks to the unicorn, the Solar Order managed to raise from the ashes like a phoenix. Thriving better than it had for hundreds of years, but unknownst to the order...

Valor holds a secret that could destroy the whole Order. And not even her mate Belenus knows anything about it.

Community spotlight

This month, there has been a strong focus on the artistic side of development with our sights set on back-end implementation. A couple weeks back, we made the move to a new server - part of the move involved setting up areas within Laravel to easily construct Mythaura’s UI and layout, work which is still ongoing but has made considerable progress. The server switch went as smooth as butter with a short period of downtime on our Beast Demo. Within the next few days, the team expecting to test the out the upcoming Demo V3 to find and squash any bugs. The Demo V3 update is mere days away from being open to the public! 

As mentioned before, artists have been hard at work creating the endless list of assets. Completing the young Hybrid bases was the main goal this month and I’m happy to say that they have all been finished. This means that all of our publicly announced Beasts bases have been illustrated! To get an idea of just how much work went into each Beast, there are..

125 colors per part.. 4 parts on one Beast.. 6 unique Special markings.. That's a huge 1,250 image files for each base.  and a whopping 17,500 image files for all Beasts put together. And this is just the beginning! We are in the midst of concepts for our other Hybrids. Here is a super quick sneaky peek..

The level of customization players will have with their Beasts is something especially important in Mythaura. There are thousands of different combinations of Specials and Colors that a Beast can be bred with, but players will also be able to take their Beast customization further with Gear items. 

Gear are unique items that a Beast can adorn on their bodies. They are like all other items that can be obtained in the game, bought and sold as any other.  Acting as another layer, Gear is applied by the equip option found on a Beast’s profile. They can be shifted on top or below other Gear items that might be equipped which can lead to unique fashion statements.

All Gear will be compatible with all Beasts. Meaning there won’t be exclusive sets exclusive to one Beast over another, though some Gear might look and act differently on some (not all Beasts have wings for example!)

Backgrounds will also be obtainable as Gear, though only one can be applied at a time!
