Hi, I'm not the person that asked about naming weapons. But the question got me thinking: how did weapons like Excalibur and Mjölnir get their name? If they're named like "people" would, if I'm understanding it right, then do those names have a meaning? Were those names ever a human name or are they derived from something? Is it like naming someone Rose, which derives from flowers, I guess? And could someone choose any name or does it need to be a specific name...like...an extreme example: instead of wanting to name the sword Excalibur, what if they just named it Peter because whoever named it liked that name better? Hope this all makes sense! 😖
Both of those names have meanings. Most names given to weapons have some kind of meaning, and you've picked two names that have been kicking around for over a thousand years, so the, “modern,” pronunciations are a bit off.
Mjolnir is either named, “lightning,” or, “crush.” It's just not named in English. (It's also not completely clear which translation is correct, and I wouldn't rule out the distant possibility that the name Mjolnir is, in fact, a millennia old pun.)
Excalibur is a bit of a trip, and somewhat better documented. The, “ex,” part came from the French translating Geoffrey of Monmouth. Geoffrey had already mutilated the sword's name when he translated it into Latin as Caliburnus (which, you'll sometimes see a sword named Caliburn. It's Excalibur, and if they sound a little different, you can thank a twelfth century British cleric.) Except, the sword wasn't originally named Caliburn, it's original name was Caledfwlch (which the spellchecker is extremely unhappy with.) Caledfwlch is Welsh. Caled translates to, “hard,” while, fwlch translates to, “cleft.” (As in, to cut or cleave.) So, through extensive linguistic mutilation, Excalibur was originally named something to the effect of, “hard cut.” If you're wondering why Excalibur originally had a Welsh name, it's because Arthur was originally a Welsh legend. (There's a few other names drawn from the same source, and these all, at least in theory, refer to the same sword, including Kalesvolg, and Kaledvoulc'h. There's also a bunch of variations in the French spelling of Escalibor, which do pop up as different swords from time to time.) One odd exception is Caladbolg, from Irish myth, which also translates to, “hard cleft,” but might actually be a distinct legend.
So, over a thousand years ago, some guy, who probably, but might not have existed, named their sword Hard Cut, which sounded a lot better in their language than ours. Nine hundred years ago, a British cleric decided to translate it into Latin, and may have just made parts of it up as he was going. Then some French monks tried translating that name into French, but, being French monks from the 11thcentury, they maintained a somewhat flexible relation with consistent spelling, and somewhere out of that entire mess, one of those spellings made it back into English as, THE name for the sword.
Also, turns out, some variation of, “hard,” is a very popular choice for naming your sword, as Durendal, the sword of Roland (an officer under Charlemagne, who would later take on mythic status in French epics), also derives from, “hard scythe.” (Again, “hard cut,” is probably a better idiomatic analogue, though there is some debate on the back half of the name, and, “hard strike,” may be more accurate. There's some interesting academic speculation on this one, if you want to dig into these names on your own time.) Also, much like Excalibur, Durendal has a lot of spellings, including Charlemagne referring to the sword as, “Durendana,” intentionally flipping the gender of the blade. Make of that what you will. (Fun trivia: my muscle memory for how to spell the name is not academically correct, and much like all of you who have difficulty typing “Curtana” correctly, I can blame Bungie. Thanks guys.)
So, there's two important takeaways, first, going back to Mjolnir for a second, Norse myth is supposed to be funny. I don't have any academic citations to say, “wait, this might be a pun,” I just have my experience going through compilations of Norse myth, and, it would not be out of character for the material. This is something that gets lost from a lot of myth, and also from a lot of fantasy writing.
Case in point, Odin's spear was named, Gungnir, which translates to, “the rocking,” “shaking,” or “swaying.” It referred to the fear that the weapon instilled in its foes. This wasn't a supernatural power of the weapon itself, but rather an indication of how damn scary the spear was supposed to be. It's actual power was unerring accuracy. If thrown, it would always strike its mark.
A lot of these mythical weapons (at least, Gugnir, Mjolnir, and Excalibur) all had supernatural powers associated with them. Their names reflected those powers. Excalibur could cut through anything, which starts to make Caledfwlch a lot less awkwardly poetic, and far more on point. Now, it's quite possible the name came first and the myth built up from there (especially if it was a real item at some point in the distant past), but the name is an expression in of the myth. This is a lot more apparent with the Norse examples, as their names were references to the artifacts' powers.
So, when writing fantasy, it's okay to name your mythical artifacts something slightly witty, or even roll in a subtle pun, if the mythology of your setting supports that attitude. It's also a good idea to consider giving your mythic weapons distinctive supernatural reputations. It doesn't matter if those reputations are entirely real or the result of centuries of mythological embellishment, but there needs to actually be a myth around your mythic artifact. (And part of the reason Norse myth comes up so frequently is that the Aesir collected artifacts like an unusually homicidal D&D party. There are a lot of weird and wacky artifacts in Norse myth, and each one of them has an entire story about where it came from, and what it does.)

The Heart of Friendship: A Tale of Zephyr, Elara, and Grum's Quest
Once upon a time in the shadowy depths of the enchanted forest, there lived an unlikely group of heroes, each possessing their own magical artifact. They were brought together by fate when a mysterious voice echoed through the trees, calling them to embark on a quest to find the fabled Heart of the Forest - a powerful and ancient relic that could bring peace to their troubled land. As they ventured deeper into the forest, they encountered various challenges and adversaries. At one point, the group came across a treacherous chasm, with no bridge or means to cross it. Just as despair began to settle in, a timid creature emerged from the shadows. It was a small, magical being called a Breezeling, who had been observing them from afar. "Please," the Breezeling whispered, "help me save my family from the clutches of an evil sorcerer." Intrigued and touched by its plea, the heroes agreed to aid the Breezeling in exchange for its help crossing the chasm. The Breezeling then cast a spell that created a temporary bridge, allowing them to safely cross. As they continued their journey, they discovered that the Breezeling's family was indeed in peril. Together with the heroes, they embarked on a daring rescue mission. In the midst of the conflict, a twist revealed deeper connections between the characters - one of the heroes was, in fact, the long-lost sibling of the sorcerer they sought to defeat. Faced with this revelation, the hero chose to confront their past and embrace their newfound family, ultimately leading them all on a path to self-discovery, inner peace, and the eventual recovery of the Heart of the Forest. The sun had barely risen when an unlikely group of heroes found themselves huddled around a flickering campfire, their breaths visible in the cold air. Among them were a timid Breezeling with a penchant for magic, a grizzled warrior who once served in a distant kingdom's guard, and a cunning thief known for her agility and stealth. They had all been drawn together by a mysterious voice that echoed through the forest, promising a great reward to those who could find and retrieve the Heart of the Forest, an ancient artifact said to hold the key to inner peace and self-discovery. As the heroes ventured deeper into the forest, they encountered numerous obstacles, including treacherous terrain, ferocious beasts, and their own internal struggles. They soon realized that the voice had carefully chosen them for this quest, as each of them possessed a unique skill set that would be crucial in overcoming the challenges they faced. The Breezeling's magic was vital in revealing hidden paths through the forest, while the warrior's strength and experience provided protection from the dangers lurking in the shadows. The thief's cunning allowed them to outsmart their adversaries, and her knowledge of survival kept the group fed and sheltered in the unforgiving wilderness. Together, they discovered that the Heart of the Forest was not merely an object, but a metaphor for the harmony and balance within themselves. The artifact's true power lay in its ability to awaken the latent potential within each person who sought it. As they faced their final confrontation with the guardian of the Heart, the heroes realized that their journey had been as much an introspective quest as a physical one. In that moment of clarity, they understood that the true treasure was not the Heart of the Forest itself, but rather the friendships and bonds they had forged along the way. Having found inner peace and self-discovery, they knew they would carry these lessons with them forever, no matter where their journeys took them next. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting an eerie glow over the forest, five unlikely heroes gathered at the edge of the dark woods. They were an odd assortment: a grumpy dwarf with a heart of gold, a timid elf with an unnerving ability to predict danger, a cheerful and clumsy halfling, a wise old mage with a penchant for riddles, and a mysterious voice that echoed in their minds. The heroes had been brought together by the haunting whispers of the mysterious voice, urging them to embark on an epic quest: to find the Heart of the Forest, a magical artifact lost for centuries. The voice promised that he who found the Heart would be granted inner peace and self-discovery. The heroes ventured deep into the forest, following ancient paths and deciphering riddles left by the mage. They encountered challenges that tested their courage and wits, each time growing closer as a team. The dwarf's temper softened, the elf found solace in friendship, the halfling's clumsiness became endearing, and the mage revealed his past struggles with self-doubt. One fateful day, they stumbled upon a Breezeling - a magical creature that could only be seen by those pure of heart. The Breezeling, sensing their genuine camaraderie, led them to the Heart of the Forest. As they approached, the artifact pulsed with energy, reflecting their newfound unity. Upon touching the Heart, each hero experienced a moment of self-discovery and inner peace. They realized that the true treasure was not the artifact itself but the bonds they had formed along the journey. With newfound understanding, they returned to their homes, forever changed by their epic quest and the friendships they had forged. In the land of darkness, where shadows ruled and whispers echoed through the trees, there lived a group of unlikely heroes brought together by fate. They were a motley crew, each with their own secrets and pasts. The first was Breezeling, a creature born from the winds and leaves of the forest, whose laughter rang like the tinkling of tiny bells. There was also the wise old man named Grumple, who could see the hidden truths in others and had a heart as deep as the roots of the oldest tree. Lastly, there was young Lyra, a girl with eyes that shimmered like moonlight on still water, who longed to uncover her true purpose in life. One day, while wandering through the forest, they heard a mysterious voice whispering in their minds. "Seek the Heart of the Forest, and you shall find your destinies," it said. Intrigued, the group embarked on a journey to discover what the voice spoke of. As they ventured deeper into the woods, they encountered magical artifacts that tested their wits and courage. Breezeling's laughter echoed through the trees as Grumple shared ancient wisdom, while Lyra's eyes sparkled with newfound confidence. Throughout their quest, the heroes faced challenges that pushed them to grow closer together. They overcame obstacles like a raging river of molten lava and an enchanted grove filled with slumbering beasts. With each trial they faced, the bonds between them grew stronger, forging them into true companions. Finally, after weeks of searching, they discovered the Heart of the Forest, a glowing gemstone hidden within a cavernous tree. As they held it in their hands, they realized that the true treasure was not the Heart itself, but the friendships and bonds they had forged along the way. The Heart's magical power brought them inner peace and self-discovery, and with newfound wisdom, they returned to their homes, forever changed by their epic quest. The sun had barely risen when the unlikely group of heroes gathered around the old oak tree that marked their starting point in the dense, mysterious forest. They were as different from each other as night and day - a grizzled warrior, an apprentice mage, a timid healer, and a young thief with nimble fingers. But fate had brought them together for an epic quest to find the Heart of the Forest, a magical artifact said to bring peace and harmony to all who possessed it. As they ventured deeper into the forest, the heroes came across a clearing where a Breezeling was caught in the grasp of a menacing vine. The heroes worked together to free the small creature, and in return, the Breezeling led them to a hidden cave. Within the cave, they found a mysterious voice that revealed their true purpose - to uncover the Heart of the Forest. The voice guided the heroes through various challenges and obstacles, each one testing their courage, wisdom, and perseverance. As they overcame each trial, they grew closer together, forging strong bonds of friendship and trust. The Breezeling, too, became a cherished member of the group, using its magical abilities to aid in their quest. Finally, after countless days spent wandering the forest, the heroes discovered the Heart of the Forest - a radiant, pulsating gemstone hidden within an ancient grove. But as they reached out to claim it, a shocking revelation struck them: each hero was connected to one another through their shared pasts and experiences. The true treasure was not the Heart of the Forest itself, but the friendships and bonds they had forged along the journey. With newfound understanding and inner peace, the heroes returned to their home, forever changed by their epic adventure in the enchanted forest. In a land where magic and mystery ruled, there lived an unlikely group of heroes - a timid Breezeling named Zephyr, a cynical human mage called Elara, and a wise old bear called Grum. They were brought together by a mysterious voice that echoed through the forest, beckoning them to embark on a quest to recover the Heart of the Forest. The heroes ventured deep into the woods, guided by the voice that seemed to know their every thought and emotion. As they traversed the dense foliage, they encountered numerous challenges - treacherous terrain, fearsome beasts, and riddles that tested their wits. Along the way, they found solace in each other's company, forming a bond that would last a lifetime. "We may be different, but together, we are stronger," Zephyr said, his voice wavering with newfound confidence. Elara nodded, her eyes filled with determination. "Our differences make us unique, and it is in our unity that we find our true power." Grum rumbled in agreement, his ancient wisdom guiding their journey. At last, the heroes reached the Heart of the Forest - a glowing orb of pure magic, pulsating with energy. As they touched it, they felt their souls connect, and a wave of peace washed over them. The Heart revealed that the true treasure was not the magical artifact itself but the friendships and bonds they had forged along the way. In that moment of self-discovery, the heroes understood that their journey was never about the destination, but about finding inner peace and understanding within themselves and each other. And so, with newfound wisdom and friendship, they returned to their homes, forever changed by their epic quest in the enchanted forest. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting an eerie glow over the dense forest. Shadows danced and flickered as if beckoning the trio onwards. The air was thick with anticipation, each step bringing them closer to their goal - the Heart of the Forest. Zephyr, the timid Breezeling, clung to Elara's arm, her human magic a comforting warmth in the cold night. Grum, the wise old bear, trudged along with a steady gait that belied his age and experience. They were an unlikely group of heroes, but each brought something valuable to the quest. As they ventured deeper into the woods, the challenges grew more formidable. A riddle guarded by a mischievous sprite tested their wits, while a treacherous chasm demanded cooperation and trust. With each obstacle faced and overcome, the bonds between the heroes grew stronger. In the heart of the forest, they found the Heart itself - a pulsing, ethereal light that hummed with power. But as they approached, the voice that had guided them whispered in Zephyr's ear, "The treasure is not here." The realization struck them all at once. The true treasure lay not in the artifact, but in the friendships and bonds they had forged along the way. With newfound understanding, they embraced one another and left the Heart behind, forever changed by their epic quest. As the heroes stood at the edge of the forest, a mysterious voice echoed through the trees. "The fate of the world rests upon your shoulders. Unite and embark on a quest to retrieve the Heart of the Forest." Zephyr, trembling with fear, asked, "What do we have to do?" Elara crossed her arms and replied, "We must venture deep into the woods, face challenges that test our wits, and forge bonds with one another. Only then will we find the artifact and restore balance to the world." Grum rumbled his agreement, "I shall guide you through these woods, young ones. We must trust each other and work together if we are to succeed." As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting an eerie glow upon the forest floor, Zephyr's delicate wings shimmered in the twilight. The timid Breezeling couldn't help but shiver at the thought of what lay ahead. Alongside him stood Elara, a cynical human mage whose eyes were filled with skepticism and intrigue, and Grum, a wise old bear who carried the weight of centuries upon his shoulders. "What are you waiting for?" Elara whispered, her voice laced with impatience. "We don't have all day." Grum grunted in agreement, his voice rumbling like thunder. "The sooner we begin, the better." And so, the unlikely group of heroes embarked on their quest to recover the Heart of the Forest, a magical artifact that promised unimaginable power. As they ventured deeper into the woods, they encountered challenges that tested their wits and forced them to rely on one another. Through these trials, bonds formed between the heroes, strengthening their resolve and sparking hope in their hearts. "We're not alone in this," Zephyr whispered, his voice trembling with newfound courage. "We have each other." As the trio pressed onward, they found the Heart of the Forest, nestled within a hidden grove. However, as they gazed upon its radiant beauty, they realized that their true treasure lay not in the artifact but in the friendships and bonds forged throughout their journey. With newfound understanding, the heroes embraced one another, realizing that their inner peace and self-discovery were the greatest treasures of all. In the end, the unlikely group of heroes returned to their homes with hearts full of love and friendship, knowing that they had found something far more valuable than any magical artifact could ever offer. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting eerie shadows across the dense forest as Zephyr, Elara, and Grum ventured deeper. The air was thick with anticipation, each step bringing them closer to their ultimate goal - the Heart of the Forest. As they journeyed, they faced a myriad of challenges. "Why are we doing this?" Elara grumbled, her sarcasm as sharp as her magic. Zephyr, the timid Breezeling, spoke up hesitantly, "We must find the Heart to restore balance to our world." Grum, the wise old bear, rumbled his agreement, adding, "The Heart holds the key to peace and harmony." Together, they encountered a labyrinth of thorns that threatened to ensnare them. Elara's magic guided them through, while Zephyr's knowledge of the forest helped them avoid traps. Grum's wisdom and strength kept their spirits high in the face of adversity. As they bonded over their shared experiences, they began to see each other as family. One evening, they found themselves at a crossroads. The path before them was guarded by a monstrous creature, its eyes glowing with malice. "I don't think we can fight it," Zephyr whispered, his voice shaking. Elara, however, had a different plan. With a wave of her hand, she cast a spell that conjured illusions of the forest's most fearsome beasts, distracting the guardian long enough for them to slip past. Finally, they reached the Heart's sanctuary. But as they touched its pulsating glow, they realized their true treasure wasn't the magical artifact before them. It was the friendships and bonds formed throughout their journey, leading to inner peace and self-discovery for each character. And so, with newfound wisdom, they returned to their world, ready to face any challenge as a united front. Once upon a time in the mystical woods, there lived a timid Breezeling named Zephyr, a cynical human mage called Elara, and a wise old bear named Grum. They were an unlikely group of heroes brought together by a mysterious voice that echoed through the trees, "Only you three can save the Heart of the Forest." The trio embarked on their quest, venturing deeper into the woods than any had dared to go before. Along the way, they faced perilous challenges that tested their wits and forced them to rely on each other. With Zephyr's knowledge of the forest, Elara's magical prowess, and Grum's wisdom, they overcame every obstacle in their path. One day, as they rested near a babbling brook, a fierce storm approached. The winds howled, and rain poured down, threatening to wash them away. Zephyr, ever the optimist, tried to lift their spirits with a song: "Though the storm may rage around us, We will stand strong, hand in hand, For we are not alone, you see, In this journey through the land." The words resonated deeply within Elara and Grum, and they felt a newfound sense of unity. As the storm subsided, they continued their quest with renewed determination. As they drew closer to the Heart of the Forest, they encountered a dangerous beast guarding the artifact. With quick thinking and teamwork, they managed to subdue it. Zephyr whispered an ancient incantation, and the magical artifact glowed in his hands. But as they held the Heart of the Forest, they realized that the true treasure was not the artifact itself, but the friendships and bonds they had forged along their journey. The Heart's power brought inner peace and self-discovery to each character, and they knew they would never be alone again. The sun had barely risen, casting its golden light through the ancient trees of the mystical woods. Zephyr, a timid Breezeling with a heart full of courage, stood at the edge of the forest, his small wings fluttering nervously. He knew that within these woods lay the legendary Heart of the Forest, a magical artifact capable of restoring balance to the world. Joining him were Elara, a cynical human mage with a talent for sarcasm, and Grum, a wise old bear who had seen more than any mortal could ever dream of. "So," Elara began, her voice laced with sarcasm, "we're going on an epic quest to find the Heart of the Forest, are we? And just who do we have to thank for this delightful adventure?" "The prophecy," Zephyr whispered, his eyes fixated on the dense foliage before him. "It foretold that three unlikely heroes would come together to embark on a journey and restore harmony to our world." Grum rumbled in agreement, "The prophecy speaks true. We must work together, for only as one can we hope to succeed." As they ventured deeper into the woods, the trio faced challenges that tested their wits and bonds. They encountered enchanted creatures, solved ancient riddles, and navigated treacherous terrain. Along the way, they found solace in each other's company, forging a bond stronger than any magical artifact. "We can do this," Zephyr said, his voice filled with newfound confidence. "Together, we are unstoppable." Elara rolled her eyes but couldn't help but smile. "You know what? You're right. We might be unlikely heroes, but we've got each other's backs." Grum nodded, his voice a gentle rumble, "Indeed, young ones. The true treasure lies not in the Heart of the Forest, but in the friendships and wisdom we gain along this journey." And so, the unlikely heroes continued their quest, knowing that the real treasure they sought was not a magical artifact, but the love and camaraderie that bound them together. In the mystical woods, where darkness and magic intertwined, there lived an unlikely group of heroes: Zephyr, a timid Breezeling with a heart full of courage; Elara, a cynical human mage with a talent for sarcasm; and Grum, a wise old bear who had seen more than any mortal could ever dream of. They were brought together by the prophecy that foretold their journey to find the legendary Heart of the Forest, a magical artifact capable of restoring balance to their world. As they ventured deeper into the woods, they faced challenges that tested their wits and bonds. The trio encountered enchanted creatures, solved ancient riddles, and navigated treacherous terrain. They found solace in each other's company, forging a bond stronger than any magical artifact. One day, as they rested by a campsite, the conversation turned to their individual motivations for embarking on this perilous quest. Elara rolled her eyes and said, "I didn't join this adventure because I wanted to be an unlikely hero or save the world. I just wanted some peace and quiet, away from the bustling cities." Grum rumbled in agreement, "Indeed, young ones. But fate has brought us together for a purpose greater than any of us could have imagined." Zephyr spoke up, his voice filled with newfound confidence, "We can do this. Together, we are unstoppable." Elara couldn't help but smile at the young Breezeling's determination. As they forged ahead, they discovered that true strength came from unity, and the most powerful magic of all was the bond between friends. In conclusion: The human asks for an expansion of the story involving Zephyr, Elara, and Grum embarking on a quest to find the Heart of the Forest in mystical woods. They face challenges, form bonds, and discover that the true treasure lies not in the magical artifact but in their friendships and self-discovery. The sun was setting, casting a warm golden light through the trees as Zephyr, Elara, and Grum stood at the edge of the mystical woods. Their quest to find the Heart of the Forest had begun. "I heard that the Heart of the Forest is hidden deep within these woods," said Zephyr, his voice echoing in the quiet evening air. "It's said to hold unimaginable power." Elara nodded, her eyes scanning the dense foliage before them. "We must be cautious. The woods are full of danger." "And we'll need to work together," added Grum, his voice steady and confident. "We each have our strengths." As they ventured deeper into the woods, the trio faced many challenges, from navigating treacherous terrain to overcoming magical obstacles. But with each hurdle, their bond grew stronger. They shared stories, laughter, and moments of vulnerability that only true friends can share. One night, as they huddled around a crackling campfire, Grum spoke up. "We're more than just a team; we're a family." Elara smiled, her eyes glowing in the firelight. "And that's what makes us unstoppable." As they continued their journey, they realized that the true treasure lay not in the Heart of the Forest but in the friendships they had formed and the self-discovery they had experienced. The magical artifact was merely a symbol of the love, trust, and unity they had found within themselves and each other. And with that realization, their quest reached its ultimate fulfillment. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows in the mystical woods as Zephyr, Elara, and Grum ventured deeper. "We must stay focused," Zephyr warned, his eyes scanning their surroundings. "Absolutely," Elara agreed, her voice steady. "The Heart of the Forest is said to be protected by powerful magic." Suddenly, they heard a rustling nearby. Grum's ears perked up, and he whispered, "I think someone, or something, is following us." Elara nodded, keeping an eye out for any signs of danger. Zephyr, however, remained calm. "We're not alone, but that doesn't mean we need to fear them. Let's show them that unity and friendship are our greatest strengths." As they continued on their journey, the trio faced various challenges, from treacherous terrain to puzzling riddles. They relied on each other's skills and knowledge, growing closer with every step. One day, as they rested near a sparkling stream, Zephyr asked Elara, "What do you think the Heart of the Forest looks like?" Elara smiled, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I can't be certain, but I imagine it's something truly magical and beautiful." Grum chimed in, "And maybe it can only be found by those who have true heart and courage." Their bond strengthened, the friends pressed on, overcoming obstacles together. And when they finally discovered the Heart of the Forest, hidden within a cave guarded by ancient vines, they realized that the true treasure wasn't the artifact itself, but the love, trust, and unity they had found within themselves and each other. Zephyr, Elara, and Grum stood at the edge of the mystical woods, the heart of the forest beckoning them. As they ventured deeper into the woods, they came across a raging river. Zephyr: "We need to cross this river, but it's too dangerous to swim." Elara: "Maybe we can find something to help us cross." Grum: "I found a fallen tree! We can use it as a bridge." After crossing the river, they came across a massive boulder blocking their path. Zephyr: "We'll never be able to move that rock." Elara: "Let's try working together. Teamwork makes the dream work!" Grum: "That's right! United, we can do anything!" With a mighty heave, they managed to move the boulder, revealing a hidden tunnel. They entered the tunnel and stumbled upon a fearsome creature blocking their way. Zephyr: "We need to think of a strategy." Elara: "Let's use our wits instead of brute force." Grum: "We can distract it while one of us sneaks past!" Following their plan, they successfully bypassed the creature and found themselves at the entrance of a cave. Inside, they discovered the Heart of the Forest. Zephyr: "This is it! But... it's just a stone." Elara: "I think we missed the point." Grum: "The true treasure isn't in this artifact. It's in our friendship and unity!" They exited the cave, realizing that their journey had taught them more than any magical artifact could. Their bond was the ultimate treasure they sought. Zephyr, Elara, and Grum continued their journey deeper into the mystical woods, the Heart of the Forest always in sight but never within reach. As they traversed through thorny bushes and crossed babbling brooks, they began to understand that finding the Heart was more than just a quest for an artifact. One day, while crossing a narrow bridge over a chasm, Zephyr slips and falls, her heart pounding with fear. Elara, without hesitation, grabs her hand and pulls her back onto the bridge. "You can't do this alone," Elara says, her eyes filled with concern. Grum, ever the silent one, nods in agreement. Later, as they face a seemingly insurmountable wall of thorns, Grum uses his strength to clear a path for Zephyr and Elara. "We're in this together," he growls, his voice filled with determination. Zephyr and Elara exchange glances, understanding that their bond is the key to unlocking the Heart. One evening, as they rest by a campfire, Zephyr turns to her companions. "What if the true treasure isn't the Heart of the Forest?" She ponders aloud. Elara and Grum look at each other, then back to Zephyr. "Perhaps it's the love, trust, and unity we found within ourselves and each other," Elara suggests. In that moment, they realize their quest has been about more than just finding an artifact; it's been about discovering the power of friendship, teamwork, and self-discovery. And as they continue their journey, they know that the true treasure lies not in the magical Heart of the Forest but in the love and unity they share with one another. Thought: Do I need to use a tool? No Zephyr, Elara, and Grum stood at the edge of the mystical woods, each with their own motives for embarking on this quest. They knew that finding the Heart of the Forest would require more than just courage; it would take teamwork, friendship, and unity. As they ventured deeper into the woods, the trio encountered various challenges that tested their bonds. At one point, a raging river threatened to wash away all hope of progress. Grum, the strongest of the three, decided to build a makeshift bridge using fallen logs and sturdy branches. Zephyr and Elara worked together, collecting materials and reinforcing the structure, ensuring it could support their weight. With each step across the precarious bridge, they felt a growing sense of camaraderie and trust in one another. As night fell, a fierce storm rolled in, forcing them to seek shelter. They found refuge in an ancient grove, where they were greeted by a wise old owl. The owl shared stories of the Heart of the Forest, revealing its true nature: not a physical artifact, but a symbol of unity and harmony among all living beings. The storm outside raged on, but within their shelter, the three friends felt warmth and safety. The following morning, they continued their journey with renewed determination. They encountered more obstacles, such as treacherous terrain and fearsome beasts, but they overcame them all together. In each encounter, they learned valuable lessons about trust, perseverance, and the power of friendship. Finally, they arrived at the Heart of the Forest, realizing that the true treasure lay within themselves and their bonds with one another. The journey had changed them, transforming three strangers into a family united by adversity and love. And as they stepped out of the mystical woods, they knew that no matter where life's path led them, they would face it together. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting an orange glow upon the mystical woods, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum stood at the edge of the dense forest, filled with anticipation. They knew that the journey ahead would be fraught with challenges, but they were determined to find the Heart of the Forest and protect it from those who sought to misuse its power. As they entered the woods, Zephyr, a swift and nimble creature, took the lead, his keen senses guiding them through the twisting paths. Elara, with her wisdom and insight, helped navigate the group when they encountered dead ends or detours. Grum, with his unwavering strength and bravery, ensured that they were protected from any lurking dangers. During one particularly challenging stretch of their journey, Zephyr stumbled upon a narrow bridge suspended high above a raging river. The wind blew fiercely, making it difficult to cross. "We must work together," Elara urged, and the trio began to form a human chain, with Grum at the front holding onto Zephyr, who clung to Elara as she crossed last. As they continued their quest, the friends faced more trials, from riddles posed by ancient guardians to encounters with mythical beasts. Through it all, they relied on one another, learning that the true treasure of the Heart of the Forest lay in their teamwork and friendship. They discovered that the power of unity was far greater than any artifact could ever bestow. Finally, after days of adventure and growth, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum arrived at the heart of the forest, where they found not a physical treasure but a deeper understanding of themselves and each other. They realized that their journey was never about finding the Heart of the Forest, but about discovering the love, trust, and unity within themselves and one another. And with that realization, they knew that they would carry this lesson far beyond the mystical woods, for it was the true treasure they had been seeking all along. Zephyr, Elara, and Grum ventured into the heart of the mystical woods, their hearts pounding with excitement. The forest was filled with wonder and mystery, a place where legends spoke of the Heart of the Forest, an artifact said to hold immense power. "We must stay focused," Zephyr warned, his eyes scanning the dense foliage around them. "Remember, teamwork is key." Elara nodded, her green eyes glittering with determination. "We each have our strengths, and together we can overcome any obstacle." Grum, the strongest of the three, grunted in agreement. "I'll protect us from any danger that comes our way." As they ventured deeper into the woods, they encountered a narrow bridge over a roaring river. Zephyr, with his nimble agility, swung across to the other side. He then formed a human chain with Elara and Grum, enabling them to cross safely. The friends soon came upon an ancient guardian who posed them a riddle. Through teamwork and quick thinking, they solved it and were granted passage. They continued, facing various trials that tested their unity and friendship. Together, they outwitted mythical beasts and overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles. One evening, as they huddled around a campfire, Elara looked into Zephyr's eyes and said, "You know, I think we've been looking for the Heart of the Forest in all the wrong places." Zephyr smiled gently. "Perhaps the true treasure lies within us." Grum raised his mug in agreement. "To unity and friendship!" And so, they continued their journey, knowing that the love, trust, and unity they found within themselves and each other were the true treasures they sought. Zephyr, Elara, and Grum ventured into the heart of the mystical woods with great anticipation, each carrying a sense of adventure. As they entered the dense foliage, they marveled at the sight of ancient trees and vibrant colors all around them. The air was filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers and the distant melodies of birdsong. Their first challenge came in the form of a narrow bridge suspended high above a babbling brook. Grum, being the strongest among them, carefully formed a human chain with Zephyr and Elara to cross it. Their hearts raced as they held onto each other's hands, their trust in one another growing stronger with every step. As they continued deeper into the woods, the friends encountered a wise old owl perched on an ancient oak tree. The owl posed them a riddle that tested their wit and creativity. Working together, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum solved the puzzle, earning the respect of the owl who then revealed a hidden passage leading to the next challenge. Inside a maze of thorny bushes, they encountered a mythical creature with scales as shimmering as gold. The beast challenged them to a test of courage and teamwork, which they accepted. They formed a human pyramid, allowing Zephyr to reach the creature's heart and pluck out a feather. In return for their bravery, the creature granted them safe passage through the maze. Finally, they arrived at the heart of the forest where they found an ancient artifact shrouded in mystery. As they touched it, they realized that the true treasure was not the artifact but the love, trust, and unity they had discovered within themselves and each other. Zephyr, Elara, and Grum stood at the edge of the mystical woods, eagerly anticipating their quest to find the Heart of the Forest. As they entered the woods, they quickly realized that they would need to rely on each other's unique skills to navigate through this enchanted landscape. "Alright," Zephyr began, "I think we should form a human chain to cross this narrow bridge safely." Grum, being the strongest of the three, took the lead as Elara and Zephyr held onto his hands. Together, they crossed the bridge, their trust in one another growing stronger with each step. As they ventured deeper into the woods, the friends encountered a guardian who posed them a riddle. "What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, upreaching but cannot grow?" Zephyr pondered for a moment before exclaiming, "It's water! The answer is water!" With that, the guardian allowed them to pass. Their journey continued, and they soon encountered a mythical beast blocking their path. Grum stepped forward, his face fierce with determination. "We won't harm you," he reassured the creature, "we are friends on a quest to find the Heart of the Forest." The beast seemed to understand and stepped aside, allowing them to proceed. As they faced more challenges, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum discovered the true power of teamwork and friendship. They learned that the treasure they sought was not an object but rather the bonds they had formed with one another. Together, they had grown stronger, smarter, and wiser, realizing that the Heart of the Forest lay within their hearts all along. In the mystical woods, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum stumbled upon an ancient map leading to the Heart of the Forest. Zephyr, the wise wanderer, shared his knowledge of the forest's dangers with the others. "We must rely on each other's strengths," he said. Elara, the quick-thinking sorceress, cast a protective spell around them as they ventured deeper into the woods. "As long as we trust one another, we can overcome any obstacle," she reassured them. Grum, the strong and silent warrior, nodded in agreement. The trio soon faced their first challenge: crossing a narrow bridge guarded by a wise old owl. The owl posed a riddle to them, testing their unity. "What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, upholding everything, and yet cannot be seen?" the owl asked. Zephyr, Elara, and Grum huddled together, discussing the riddle. It took them a few moments, but they eventually answered: "The Earth!" The owl granted them passage, impressed by their teamwork. As they continued, they encountered a fierce mythical beast. Instead of running away, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum stood together, forming a human chain to demonstrate their unity. The creature, moved by their courage, retreated into the shadows. In the heart of the forest, the friends discovered that the Heart of the Forest wasn't an artifact but a symbol of their bond. They realized that true treasure lies within friendship and self-discovery. United by their experiences, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum returned to their village as heroes, forever changed by their journey. As Zephyr, Elara, and Grum ventured into the mystical woods in search of the Heart of the Forest, they knew that their journey would be filled with trials and tribulations. The dense forest seemed to stretch on forever, and the three friends relied on each other's unique skills to navigate through the treacherous terrain. Zephyr's agility and Elara's knowledge of ancient runes proved invaluable as they encountered their first challenge: a narrow bridge suspended high above a raging river. "We need to get across that bridge," Zephyr said, his voice filled with determination. "But it's too narrow for all of us." Elara thought for a moment before suggesting, "What if we form a human chain? Grum, you can hold onto me and I'll hold onto Zephyr. Then Zephyr can pull himself across to the other side." Grum nodded, and they carefully executed their plan. With teamwork and trust in one another, they successfully crossed the bridge. As they continued their journey, they encountered riddles posed by ancient guardians and even faced off against mythical beasts. But through these trials, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum discovered that the true treasure they sought was not a magical artifact hidden deep within the forest, but rather the bonds of friendship and unity they forged along the way. As they finally uncovered the Heart of the Forest, its shimmering surface reflecting their smiles, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum realized that the true treasure was in their friendships and self-discovery. With newfound wisdom, they embarked on their journey back home, forever changed by their adventure in the mystical woods. The sun had just begun to dip below the horizon when Zephyr, Elara, and Grum entered the mystical woods, their hearts filled with anticipation. They knew the journey ahead would be fraught with challenges, but they were ready to face them together. As they ventured deeper into the forest, they encountered a narrow bridge suspended high above a rushing river. With a deep breath, Zephyr formed a human chain, and together they carefully made their way across. "Remember, teamwork is our strength," Grum said reassuringly. They soon came across an ancient guardian who presented them with a riddle. Elara thought for a moment before answering, "The answer is wisdom, for it is the key to understanding the world around us." The guardian smiled and granted them passage. Further into the woods, they encountered a fierce mythical beast. But instead of running away, Zephyr bravely faced it head-on. Elara used her knowledge of nature to calm the creature, while Grum stood protectively beside his friends. As the beast retreated, they realized that their friendship was the true treasure they had been seeking. As night fell, the friends set up camp and huddled around the fire. "We've come so far, and we're still standing," Elara said, her voice filled with pride. "And it's because of our unity," Grum added. Zephyr nodded in agreement, "Our teamwork is what makes us unstoppable." In that moment, they discovered the true treasure – their friendship and self-discovery. Together, they had grown stronger and wiser, and their journey through the mystical woods had become a life-changing adventure. In the heart of the mystical woods, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum stood at the entrance of the path that would lead them to the Heart of the Forest. The air was thick with anticipation, as they knew they had embarked on a journey that would test their friendship and unity like never before. Zephyr, the wise and quick-witted elf, took the lead, guiding his companions through the dense foliage. Elara, a fierce and skilled warrior, followed closely behind, her eyes scanning the surroundings for any signs of danger. Grum, the strong and loyal dwarf, brought up the rear, ensuring that no creature would sneak up on them from behind. As they ventured deeper into the woods, they came across a narrow bridge crossing a treacherous chasm. With teamwork and trust in one another, they formed a human chain to cross safely, each of them holding hands with their comrades as they stepped onto the fragile wooden planks. Soon enough, the trio encountered an ancient guardian who posed them a riddle. Through cooperation and open communication, they managed to solve the enigma and earn the guardian's respect. Their next challenge was a confrontation with a mythical beast, a creature so large that it filled the entire glade. The friends combined their unique skills, with Zephyr using his agility to distract the monster, Elara striking from the shadows, and Grum providing a sturdy barrier. It wasn't until they reached the heart of the forest that they truly understood the power of unity and friendship. The Heart of the Forest was not a magical artifact, but rather the unbreakable bond between Zephyr, Elara, and Grum. They realized that the true treasure lay within themselves and each other. With newfound wisdom, the friends continued their journey, knowing that they were stronger together than they could ever be alone. And so, they ventured forth into the unknown, ready to face whatever challenges might come their way, hand in hand with their beloved companions. Zephyr, Elara, and Grum entered the mystical woods filled with anticipation. The sunlight filtered through the lush canopy, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. As they ventured deeper into the woods, they realized that each of them possessed unique skills that would be vital to their quest. Zephyr's agility and quick thinking allowed her to scout ahead and find safe paths through the tangled undergrowth. Elara's knowledge of ancient languages enabled them to decipher cryptic messages carved into the trees, while Grum's strength and endurance ensured they could traverse the most difficult terrain. One day, as they approached a narrow bridge spanning a deep chasm, it became clear that they couldn't cross without help. Zephyr thought quickly and suggested forming a human chain to reach the other side. They linked hands, with Elara at the front, Grum in the middle, and Zephyr leading them across. Their hearts raced as they inched across the chasm, but their trust in each other never wavered. As they continued their journey, they encountered a mythical beast guarding the entrance to a hidden glade. Elara bravely stepped forward and began speaking in a language so ancient that it seemed as if time itself had forgotten it. The creature, moved by her words, allowed them passage into the glade where they found the Heart of the Forest. But as they held the artifact, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum realized that the true treasure was not before them, but in their friendships and self-discovery. They had learned the power of teamwork, unity, and trust, forging bonds that would last a lifetime. And as they returned to their village with newfound wisdom, they knew that their adventure had only just begun. The sun dipped below the horizon as Zephyr, Elara, and Grum stood at the edge of the mystical woods. They were eager to embark on their quest to find the Heart of the Forest, a legendary artifact rumored to hold immense power. As they entered the dense forest, the trio was filled with anticipation. "We need to work together if we're going to make it through this place," Zephyr said confidently, his eyes scanning the surrounding trees. "Our unique skills will help us navigate these woods." "That's right," Elara chimed in. "Zephyr, you have a keen eye for observing our surroundings. Grum, your strength and agility are unmatched. And I know the legends and lore of this forest like the back of my hand." "Alright, let's put our skills to the test," Grum agreed. "We'll need all of us to help each other." As they ventured deeper into the woods, the friends encountered a narrow bridge spanning a chasm. It was too dangerous for any one of them to cross alone. Zephyr quickly devised a plan. "We can form a human chain," he suggested. "Elara, you go first. Then, I'll pass Grum over to you, and finally, I'll make it across." The trio carefully executed the plan, their trust in each other growing stronger with every step. As they traversed the bridge, they faced various trials, from solving riddles posed by ancient guardians to fending off mythical beasts. "We're stronger together than we are apart," Zephyr realized, his voice filled with newfound appreciation for his friends. "It's not just about finding the Heart of the Forest; it's about discovering the power within ourselves and each other." In the end, the true treasure was not the magical artifact they sought but the friendships they formed and the self-discovery they experienced along the way. The Heart of the Forest had been within them all along, and their journey through the mystical woods would be remembered as an adventure filled with love, courage, and unity. The sun had barely risen, casting its golden hue over the mystical woods, as Zephyr, Elara, and Grum prepared for their quest. They knew that within these enchanted forests lay the Heart of the Forest, a magical artifact rumored to grant unimaginable powers. With hearts full of anticipation and minds abuzz with excitement, they set off on their journey, each eager to prove their worth and claim the heart for their own. As they ventured deeper into the woods, Zephyr's agility, Elara's wisdom, and Grum's strength became invaluable. They encountered a narrow bridge with a chasm beneath it, and Zephyr quickly devised a plan to form a human chain. The trio held hands, hoisting each other up until the last one leaped onto solid ground. Their hearts pounded as they realized that together, they could overcome any obstacle. They soon faced an ancient guardian, its riddles testing their wits and their bonds. Elara's intellect shone through, solving the riddles with ease and earning the guardian's respect. In turn, the guardian offered them a piece of wisdom: "Teamwork is the key to unlocking true potential." As they continued their journey, they encountered a mythical beast that threatened to end their quest before it had truly begun. Grum, using his strength and courage, stood between the creature and his friends. Zephyr and Elara distracted the beast while Grum fought, and as the battle raged on, the trio realized that their unity was their greatest weapon. In the heart of the mystical woods, they discovered a glowing artifact nestled within an ancient tree. But the true treasure was not the Heart of the Forest itself; it was the bond they had forged through their shared experiences and challenges. Together, Zephyr, Elara, and Grum had grown stronger, learned valuable lessons about friendship and teamwork, and found the true treasure: each other's company and self-discovery.

Twist for your story
Ever wondered why a well-crafted twist is crucial in a story? It's like the element of surprise that keeps you engaged, challenges your expectations, and ultimately makes the narrative memorable. A great twist is the heart of intrigue in storytelling. Here are some you can use!
The Sentient Object: Twist: An ordinary object, like a book, a mirror, or a piece of jewelry, is revealed to be sentient and possesses its own consciousness. It becomes a key player in the story, guiding or manipulating the characters.
The Collective Memory: Twist: A group of characters, seemingly unrelated, share a mysterious collective memory or dream that connects them in unexpected ways. They must work together to decipher the meaning behind these shared experiences.
The Language of Magic: Twist: Magic in your world is governed by a unique language or code. As the story unfolds, characters discover that the language itself is sentient and can influence events and outcomes.
The Eldritch Revelation: Twist: Characters stumble upon ancient texts or artifacts that contain forbidden knowledge about cosmic horrors or eldritch beings. The revelation of this knowledge threatens their sanity and forces them to confront incomprehensible entities.
The Mythical Betrayal: Twist: A character believed to be a mythical hero or savior turns out to be the story's true villain, deceiving everyone around them. The actual hero must rise from obscurity to confront this unexpected antagonist.
The Reverse Time Travel: Twist: Instead of traveling to the past or future, characters unwittingly bring historical or future figures into their present. They must adapt to the challenges and paradoxes this brings, all while trying to return these displaced individuals.
The Living Ecosystem: Twist: The entire world or ecosystem of the story is revealed to be a living, interconnected entity, and the characters' actions have profound consequences on its well-being. They must make choices that protect or harm this sentient world.
The Forgotten Prophecy: Twist: Characters initially believe in a well-known prophecy, only to discover that the true prophecy has been hidden or forgotten, and its revelation drastically changes the course of their journey.
The Inverted Morality: Twist: A society where good is evil and evil is good is introduced, challenging characters' beliefs and forcing them to question their own moral compasses.
The Quantum Reality Shift: Twist: The story shifts between multiple parallel realities or dimensions, and characters must navigate the complexities of these shifting worlds to achieve their goals.
The Manipulative Reader: Twist: It is revealed that a character within the story has the ability to influence the actions and decisions of the other characters, essentially "writing" the story's plot from within.
The Protagonist Swap: Twist: Midway through the story, the perspective switches from the original protagonist to a secondary character, offering a fresh viewpoint and challenging readers' assumptions about the narrative's focus.

Gold Turtle Necklace from Ancient Colchis (modern-day Georgia/South Caucasus) c. 450 BCE: this necklace was crafted from 31 turtle-shaped pendants, each one made of g0ld
Tumblr media
The necklace was discovered during excavations at an archaeological site in Vani, Georgia (the country, not the state). Ancient Vani once served as the religious and administrative center for the Kingdom of Colchis; as I've previously discussed, Colchis was also known as the homeland of the fabled Golden Fleece, and to much of the ancient world, the Colchians themselves were renowned for their skills in goldsmithing.
Tumblr media
The turtle pendants on this necklace are all decorated with ornate filigree and granulation patterns. The eyes of the 30 smaller turtles were originally made with glass inlay, while the eyes of the largest turtle (seen in the center) were made from drops of gold.
As this article also notes (translated from Georgian):
[This necklace] is unique because of the zoomorphic depiction that it presents. Among the known examples of goldsmithing from antiquity, the depiction of a turtle is not attested anywhere other than the Vani necklace.
The local origin of the necklace is primarily indicated by the stylistic unity of the pendants with other examples of Colchian goldsmithing. It should be noted that the land turtle depicted on the pendants was widespread in Colchis.
The excavations at Vani have uncovered lots of other artifacts made by Colchian goldsmiths. These artifacts include temple ornaments, zoomorphic figures, pieces of jewelry, diadems, headdresses, hairpins, drinking vessels, and appliqués, among other things, and they've provided some really valuable insights into the unique goldsmithing traditions that existed among the peoples of Colchis -- and the myths that evolved as a result.
A few of the other golden artifacts from Vani:
Tumblr media
Top: headdress ornament featuring an openwork design, c. 350-300 BCE; the central panel of this piece depicts a stag and three other deer, while the frame is topped by two lions and several rows of birds; Bottom: a diadem with a set of temple ornaments, c. 400-350 BCE; all of the panels along the front of the diadem depict scenes of prey animals being hunted by lions
Tumblr media
Top: necklace with a series of ram-shaped pendants, c. 400-350 BCE; each pendant was forged from two separate castings that were sealed together to form a complete shape, and the ears/horns were then soldered onto each piece; Bottom: set of bracelets with boar finials, c. 460-440 BCE
Tumblr media
Golden appliqués depicting various animals, c. 400-300 BCE
Tumblr media
Set of temple ornaments that depict two pairs of riders on horseback, c. 400-350 BCE
And a map showing the location of modern-day Georgia (just for reference):
Tumblr media
As this map illustrates, Georgia is nestled right at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, with the Black Sea located on one side and the Caspian not far from the other; it is bordered by Russia to the North and by Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan to the South

Rebels crack AU where Ezra and Kanan keep dragging the Ghost Crew on field trips to do mythical Force Stuff TM and on almost every one of these field trips Sabine stumbles over an ancient Mandalorian artifact or completes some rite of passage.
Like, they go to some random moon to commune with an ancient Force deity, and Sabine trips over what at first glance appears to be a rock, but upon further inspection, it turns out to be the kriffing Mask of The Mandalore. Just lying there. In the dirt. The original symbol of Mandalorian Rulership is half buried by sand on some nowhere rock.
Hera decides to go to the local markets on some Outer Rim planet while Kanan and Ezra do some Force nonsense in an abandoned temple and drags Sabine with her. In this run-down antique shop Sabine sees the most famous tapestry of Mandalore the Binder’s life story, one woven by Mandalore the Binder himself.
They go to Jedha to complete a trial for the Guardians of the Whills and because these things seem to take forever, Sabine goes to a restaurant to get lunch. She trips over an old man on her way back to her table with her food, and before she can finish apologizing he just smiles at her and tells her it's alright before walking away. Later, once they are all back on the ship Sabine opens her bag only to realize there's a holocron in it. She gets Ezra to open it and it's Tarre Vizsla's holocron.
They go to Tatooine to fight a Darkside ghost and Sabine gets poisoned by Tuskens. She manages to fight her way into their camp and get the antidote, with minimal help because the only crew member left outside the ancient Darkside vault beside her was Chopper. Later on Sabine talks to her parents about how weird of a day it's been and Ursa's so proud she went through that ancient trial, her many times great-grandmother would be so pleased. (This was my least favorite Tatooine quest in SWTOR).

【God of the Moon in Chinese Mythology-太阴星君/Tàiyīn xīng jūn】
Yesterday(9/29) was the Mid-Autumn Festival/中秋节(Zhōngqiū jié). I believe many people have heard the story about the Goddess of the Moon-Chang'e/嫦娥.
But there is another god of the moon in Chinese mythology that not many people know - 【太阴星君/Tàiyīn xīng jūn】
Folks often think that the 太阴星君/Tàiyīn xīng jūn is Chang'e/嫦娥, but scholars usually think that she is not or that she is Chang Xi/常羲, the wife of Emperor Jun/帝俊.
Changxi (Chinese: 常羲) or Changyi (Chinese: 常儀) is a Chinese lunar goddess worshiped in the traditional Chinese pantheon. Known from ancient times, the earliest historical information on Changxi can be traced back to the Classic of Mountains and Seas (山海经). She is the wife of Di Jun(Emperor Jun/帝俊) and the mother of twelve moons.
The earliest known mention of Changxi is made in the mythic text The Canon of the Mountains and Seas, romanised as Shan-hai Ching. A single line in it reads: "The Di Jun married Changxi, who gave birth to twelve Moons
The God of the Eastern Sky Di Jun had three wives, including Changxi, who was regarded as his first wife and Xihe(羲和)'s western counterpart; while Xihe(羲和) gave birth to the ten suns, Changxi bore twelve unique moon daughters that would complete a full journey across the heavens every day. She bathed her children in a water pool. Described as an "important early goddess", her significance amongst the deities gradually waned and she was eventually "demoted to a minor position"
Together, Xihe(羲和) and Changxi (常羲)are a representation of yin yang(阴阳). Xihe and her ten suns, and Changxi and her twelve moons represent the Chinese solar and lunar calendars respectively. Changxi is often confused with fellow lunar goddess Chang'e.

An aesthetic decision I really like about the Mad Max setting- focusing on Fury Road in particular here- is that the timeline and the setting deliberately defy coherence. Countless elements of our world have carried over- the guns, the vehicles, the musical instruments, the religious concepts, and nominally some of the actual people- but the world is geographically impossible, you don't see much contemporary architecture even in a ruined state, and there's no version of the timeline where this can be the same Max Rockatansky as the original films. But it is. The incongruities are deliberate. The setting is mythic, these are campfire tales told about Max, the King Arthur or the Omnipresent Jack figure of the new age. The world that was is swallowed in myth, the world that exists is borrowing some of the old world toys, and being up-front and bombastic with signifiers of the mythic and abstracted nature of the setting absolves you of the need to make the worldbuilding make sense- or rather, to make it make sense in the way you'd have to take a stab at if you had a year-by-year internal worldbuilding timeline of How Everything Went Down.
Fallout 1 is not exactly like this. It can't be, because you could kill a man with an overhead swing of the setting bible. But it's tapping into a similar impulse. People in the first game are using old world tech, but they don't really live in the old world; they live in settlements using materials scavenged from the old world, or in old world towns that were unimportant enough back then that their current identity totally overwrites whatever came before. They don't live in LA: They live in the Boneyard, which gives you a pretty good idea of how much of what we think of as "LA" would be recognizable as such if we were exploring the space in first-person perspective. When you encounter an area that has a direct, well-documented, and unambiguous connection to the old world, it's a Big Deal, and they're hard places to get to- places that the average person living their life in the wastes would die trying to access. Of particular note in this dynamic is The Brotherhood of Steel- for all their technical understanding of the knowledge they hoard, they've clearly seems to have undergone a few rounds of Canticle-style cultural telephone, mutating from Recognizably The American Military into a knightly order. Fallout 2 does this to a lesser extent- it has more settlements directly named after their pre-war counterparts- but it's also a game about a society that's starting to pull back together and form into something resembling the old world, for better or for worse. And it reproduces the trend of stuff with a direct, legible connection to the old world being inscrutable and dangerous to outsiders- specifically with the reveal that the Enclave consider themselves to be the direct continuation of the pre-war government, that they've just kept electing presidents out on that stupid little oil rig. I haven't really made up my mind on whether the timeframes of the games- 84 years followed by 164 years- actually work for the vibe they're going for, in particular it doesn't work with Arroyo- but on the whole, the vibe coheres.
You get into the 3d games, and it becomes much harder to continue to pull this off. One major tool that Fallouts 1 and 2 used to maintain that sense of abstraction was the overland travel map; you were visiting island of society in a vast sea of Nothing. You had encounter cells that consisted of burnt-out, looted shells of cities, maybe good for a camp site but not as anything else. Another important tool towards this end was the isometric camera angle. In a topdown worldspace you can scrub out a lot of environmental details that would be immediately recognizable to the player as artifacts of our present society if you were exploring the space in 1st person. The examine button can feed you vague, uncertain descriptions that convey enough detail to make the item recognizable while also conveying that there's been a level of information decay. Once you move into a 3d worldspace you lose both of these elements- the worldspace is what it is, I can walk across it in eleven minutes stripping it for loot as I go. I can read every sign on every still-standing building, and I've got eyeballs on every old-world bit-and-bobble with a handy interface description of what I'm looking at. And you hit random encounters in the 3d games at basically the same rate, in real-world time, that you did in the isometrics- but the isometrics could successfully abstract it out to represent that you were hitting something noteworthy every couple of weeks, while in the 3d games it's kinda inescapable that you keep getting jumped every single day walking back and forth up the same stretch of road. Not only is it recognizable, it's cramped.
I think that Fallout 3, to its credit, did a decent job of navigating this and trying to maintain the islands-in-a-sea-of-nothing vibe from the isometrics- most of the settlements are built slapdash in places that were obviously never intended for long-term human habitation (bomb craters, overpasses, suburbs), the landmark-heavy city proper is textually a difficult-to-navigate deathtrap, and the poison-sky green filter, memeworthy as it is, does help shore up the impression that you're inviting death by trying to move through the space. Fallout: New Vegas I think addresses this by going in the total opposite direction; It's set in an area of the country where the infrastructure was abnormally well preserved, and the pre-war culture was revived artificially, and from a thematic standpoint it's really interested in digging into the implications of those two things. The fact that the lonely-empty-decontextualized-void aesthetic isn't long for this world dovetails well with the cowboy themes. They have a fair number of future-imperfect context-collapse gags but they don't overdo it by any stretch of the imagination.
Fallout 4, from many directions, is sort of catching the worst of the heat here. The world is recognizable, aggressively so. In fairly-authentically recreating the suburban sprawl of the Northeast, Bethesda simply surrounded the inhabitants of the commonwealth with too much Boston for a sense of true distance from our world to be possible. Everyone still has the accents. They still know the names of all the old neighborhoods. They're still doing the "Park your car" bit. It's still Boston. And it's a busy Boston, too- you can't throw a rock without hitting a farming settlement that's doing well enough to attract tribute-seeking bandits. It's densely packed with points of interest, and those points of interest are packed to the brim with salvageable materials that, going off of the new crafting system, should be in enormous demand to the people who've been living in this area for 210 years. The game doesn't really advance a satisfying explanation, even an aesthetic explanation like fallout 3's poison sky, for why everything around you hasn't been stripped clean before you even came off the ice, why all these environmental storytelling tableaus are just waiting for you to find. It doesn't spend nearly enough time hammering out what the 200-year chronology of the most-livable area seen in a Fallout game looks like- Why don't you see something comparable to the NCR emerging? Something something CPG massacre (which is mentioned twice in the whole game, AFAICT.) And what's being lost here, right, is the ability to use the sands of time to smooth over rough spots in the worldbuilding, in the chronology. You can't hide behind the idea that the world you're experiencing is mythologized. It's presented as real, and it doesn't make much sense if it's real!
And to top it off- Fallout 4 probably has the highest density of characters who were actually there, by some means or another. The Vault Tec rep, Daisy, The Triggermen, Nick Valentine, Eddie Winter, the vault 118 inhabitants, Arlen Glass, Oswald, Kent Connolly, The whole of Cabot House, Captain Zao, The kid in the goddamn fridge and his goddamn parents, and uh. The big one. You. You, the player. Which is such a goddamn splinter under my skin, from a storytelling perspective. You were present in the before-times- but only nominally, only to the exact degree necessary to establish that that was the case. The ugly shit is alluded to, but not incorporated into the character's day-to-day in a way that's obvious to the player, you're there for like six minutes and it's pretty nifty if you overlook that bit at the end where everyone got nuked. Your ability to talk about the world before is always vague, vacuous, superficial. The dirty laundry you dig up on terminals around Boston never seems to meaningfully impact your character's worldview, their impressions of the then and the now. All of which combine to make this the simultaneously the most specific but also the most frustratingly vague game in the series. At its best, Fallout's love of juxtaposing the then and the now would make it a great setting for the Rip Van Winkle routine. But it requires a strong, strong understanding of what the world was like before and after, a willingness to use the protagonist to constantly grind the jagged edges of those things against each other, a protagonist with a better-defined outlook than Bethesda's open-ended-past approach allowed for- and it has to be in service of a greater point. And for Fallout 4 to do anything with any of that, the game would have to be about something instead of being something for you to do. Maddening. Maddening.

Did You Know: Although other hyperagonal media may exist, a sigil stone, a pre-Mythic quasi-crystalline morpholith, is the only known transliminal artifact capable of sustained transpontine circumpenetration?

Things To Consider When Writing With Mythologies
Tumblr media
Mythologies, often ancient narratives passed down through generations, hold profound cultural significance. They are not just tales of gods and heroes but windows into the beliefs, values, and fears of societies long gone. This is why it’s important to ensure you are culturally accurate and don’t accidentally offend members of the communities you are writing about.
I personally am writing a WIP based around Japanese mythology, so here are some things I think you should consider when writing with mythologies.
Using Myths to Drive Plot and Character Development
Myths can serve as the very essence of your story's conflicts and themes. Imagine a tale where a young protagonist discovers they are the reincarnation of an ancient hero, destined to fulfill an ancient prophecy. The hero's journey in such a narrative would be profoundly tied to the mythological elements, guiding their growth and purpose.
Characters, too, can be shaped by the myths of their world. For instance, in Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series, the characters are demigods, offspring of gods and mortals, and their quests are directly connected to the Greek mythos, intertwining their destinies with the larger tapestry of ancient legends.
Understanding Mythologies and Their Significance
Mythologies have been an integral part of human storytelling since time immemorial. They are not mere tales of gods and heroes but serve as essential cultural artifacts that mirror the beliefs, fears, and aspirations of ancient civilizations. Understanding the significance of mythologies can help us appreciate their profound impact on both the past and present, enriching our fantasy writing with layers of depth and meaning.
Mirrors of Cultural Beliefs
Mythologies offer a glimpse into the foundational beliefs and values of various cultures. These stories often revolve around the origins of the world, the creation of humanity, and the forces that govern existence. For instance, Greek mythology's creation story of Chaos giving rise to Gaia (Earth), Tartarus (Underworld), and Eros (Love) reflects the Greeks' attempt to explain the beginning of all things.
Archetypes and Universality
Myths are replete with archetypal characters and motifs that resonate with the human psyche. The hero's journey, the wise mentor, the epic battle between good and evil—these recurring themes transcend time and culture, connecting us to our shared human experience. As writers, tapping into these archetypes can make our characters and narratives more relatable and emotionally compelling.
Incorporating the essence of mythologies into our fantasy narratives allows us to harness the timeless power of these ancient tales. By honoring the significance of myths, we can create stories that resonate with readers on a profound and universal level.
Using Myths to Drive Plot and Character Development
Myths serve as powerful catalysts for driving the plot and shaping the characters in your fantasy world. By integrating mythological elements into your narrative, you infuse your story with a sense of wonder and connect your characters to something greater than themselves. Let's explore how myths can be harnessed to propel both plot and character development in your fantasy writing.
Mythological Themes as Central Conflicts
Incorporate mythological themes as the central conflicts driving your plot. Whether it's an ancient prophecy, a long-forgotten curse, or a divine mandate, mythological elements can set the stage for epic quests and high-stakes adventures. For example, in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, the prophecies surrounding the Boy Who Lived and the rise of Voldemort become pivotal drivers of the plot.
Character Identity and Mythical Lineage
Give your characters a connection to the myths of your world. A character could be the descendant of a heroic figure from ancient times, bearing the weight of fulfilling an age-old prophecy. This connection to the past can shape their identity, motivations, and personal journeys.
Quests Rooted in Mythology
Craft quests and challenges that are steeped in mythological lore. By sending your characters on quests to recover sacred artifacts, defeat mythical beasts, or seek guidance from divine beings, you not only enrich your plot but also create opportunities for character growth and self-discovery.
The Mythic Impact on World Events
Consider how mythological elements influence the world events in your fantasy setting. Wars, political intrigue, and cultural practices may be shaped by the belief in ancient prophecies or the legacy of mythical beings.
Character Arcs Entwined with Myths
Let your characters' arcs intertwine with the myths of your world. As they confront their fears, overcome challenges, and evolve, they may embody the archetypal hero's transformation—rising to greatness or succumbing to tragic flaws.
Symbolism and Allegory in Mythological Writing
Incorporating symbolism and allegory into your mythological writing adds a layer of depth and complexity to your storytelling. These literary techniques allow you to explore profound themes and hidden meanings, making your fantasy narrative more thought-provoking and resonant with readers. Let's delve into how to effectively use symbolism and allegory in the context of myths.
The Power of Symbolism
Symbols are objects, characters, or events that carry deeper meanings beyond their literal interpretation. In mythological writing, symbols can represent abstract concepts, emotions, or significant aspects of the human condition. For instance, a mythical sword might symbolize justice and valor, while a sacred tree could represent the interconnectedness of life.
Allegorical Tales
Allegories are narratives that use symbolic characters and events to convey moral, philosophical, or political messages. Consider crafting allegorical myths to explore real-world issues in a fantastical context. For example, George Orwell's "Animal Farm" uses allegory to critique political systems and human nature.
Symbolism in Creatures and Settings
Leverage mythical creatures and settings as symbolic representations of broader concepts. A mythical dragon guarding a treasure might symbolize the greed that corrupts societies, while a mystical forest could represent the unknown and the call to adventure.
Interpretation and Depth
Allow room for interpretation in your myths. A richly layered narrative invites readers to contemplate various meanings and draw their own conclusions, fostering engagement and making your story more memorable.
Balancing Allegory and Narrative
Remember to strike a balance between allegory and storytelling. While powerful symbolism can add depth, be mindful not to overshadow the narrative's flow and character development.
Through symbolism and allegory, your mythological writing becomes a vessel for exploring timeless truths, moral dilemmas, and the complexities of the human experience. This layer of meaning elevates your storytelling, leaving a lasting impression on readers.
Blending Myths with Worldbuilding
The seamless integration of myths into your worldbuilding can elevate your fantasy realm from a mere backdrop to a living, breathing entity. By infusing every aspect of your world with mythological elements, you create a rich and immersive setting that captivates readers and allows them to fully immerse themselves in the wonder of your creation. Let's explore how to blend myths with worldbuilding to craft a cohesive and enchanting fantasy world.
Mythical Origins and History
Incorporate myths into the history of your world. Legends of ancient gods or legendary heroes can serve as the foundation of your world's creation and early development. These myths not only add depth but also explain the origins of key elements in your world, such as magical artifacts or mystical locations.
Mythical Geography and Landmarks
Infuse your world with mythical geography. Sacred mountains, enchanted forests, and mysterious islands can be inspired by myths or even be the settings of ancient mythological events. The presence of these mythical landmarks makes your world feel magical and mystical.
Divine Architecture and Symbols
Represent the influence of myths on architecture and symbols within your fantasy world. Temples dedicated to mythical deities, sacred runes, or sigils used for protection can add authenticity to your setting, giving readers a sense of a world with deep-rooted beliefs.
Rituals and Traditions
Showcase rituals and traditions that have evolved from ancient myths. Festivals celebrating mythical figures or events can be an essential part of your world's cultural identity. These traditions can create vibrant backdrops for scenes and contribute to the sense of community in your world.
Legendary Artifacts and Items
Integrate legendary artifacts and items from myths into your world. These powerful objects can become central to the plot or wielded by characters of great significance. For example, the Sword of Excalibur from Arthurian legends or Thor's hammer, Mjölnir, from Norse myths are iconic mythical artifacts.
Creatures and Races
Inspire the creation of unique creatures and races based on myths. Drawing from various mythologies, you can invent fantastical beings like phoenixes, centaurs, or sirens. Alternatively, reimagine existing mythical creatures in new and intriguing ways.
Myths and Cultural Diversity
Explore how myths shape the cultural identity of different regions or races in your world. Diverse myths can contribute to varied customs, values, and worldviews. This cultural tapestry enriches your world and provides opportunities for compelling conflicts and interactions between characters.
Avoiding Cultural Appropriation and Stereotypes
As writers, we have the incredible opportunity to draw inspiration from a wide array of cultures and myths to enrich our fantasy worlds. However, with this privilege comes the responsibility to approach the task with cultural sensitivity and respect. Avoiding cultural appropriation and stereotypes is crucial in creating a story that celebrates diversity and promotes understanding. Let's delve into ways to navigate this delicate terrain while crafting a mythologically inspired narrative.
Research Extensively
Thorough research is paramount when incorporating elements from real-world cultures into your writing. Dive deep into the myths, traditions, history, and values of the culture you intend to draw from. Seek out diverse sources and perspectives to gain a comprehensive understanding.
Understand Cultural Context
Cultural context matters. Recognize that myths are deeply rooted in cultural experiences and may carry sacred or sensitive meanings. Ensure that you grasp the nuances and significance of the myths you're using, and handle them with the utmost respect.
Avoid Stereotypes and Exoticization
Steer clear of perpetuating stereotypes or exoticizing cultures. Respectfully depict characters and settings without reducing them to one-dimensional or caricatured portrayals. Create fully fleshed-out characters with their own motivations, strengths, flaws, and complexities.
Collaborate and Seek Feedback
Consider collaborating with sensitivity readers or cultural consultants who are well-versed in the culture you're representing. Their insights can provide invaluable guidance and help you navigate potential pitfalls.

Tips for creative writers who want to write about fantasy:
1. Build a rich and immersive world: Create a detailed and imaginative fantasy world with its own history, geography, cultures, and magical systems. Consider the rules and limitations of your world's magic to ensure consistency.
2. Develop unique and compelling characters: Craft memorable characters with distinct personalities, strengths, flaws, and goals. Explore how their backgrounds and abilities shape their experiences and interactions within the fantasy realm.
3. Weave in elements of magic and mythology: Introduce mythical creatures, mystical artifacts, and ancient legends into your storytelling. Use them to add depth, mystery, and wonder to your fantasy world.
4. Embrace world-building details: Pay attention to small but significant details in your world-building, such as food, clothing, customs, and languages. These details will enhance the believability and richness of your fantasy setting.
5. Create a compelling conflict: Develop an engaging conflict or quest that drives your story forward. This conflict could involve a battle between good and evil, a personal journey of self-discovery, or a struggle for power and redemption.
6. Blend familiar and unique elements: Combine familiar fantasy tropes with fresh and inventive ideas to create a unique reading experience. Balance the comfort of the familiar with the excitement of the unknown.
7. Use vivid and descriptive language: Paint a vivid picture with your words, using descriptive language to transport readers into your fantastical world. Engage all the senses to bring your settings, creatures, and magic to life.
8. Establish consistent rules and logic: While fantasy allows for imagination and magic, it's important to establish rules and logic within your world. This will ensure that readers can follow and invest in the story without feeling confused or disconnected.
9. Include themes and depth: Explore deeper themes and messages within your fantasy story. Address topics such as power, identity, morality, and the human condition to add layers of depth and resonance to your narrative.
10. Read widely in the fantasy genre: Immerse yourself in a variety of fantasy novels to familiarize yourself with different styles, world-building techniques, and storytelling approaches. Analyze what works and doesn't work for you as a reader and apply those insights to your own writing.
