hello! read the wlw vampire story you recommended and I loved it and was then surprised to see it was written by the author of The Hacienda, which I didn't enjoy. I was wondering if you read it? It has been pretty popular on booktube!

no i haven't! i actually had never heard of her at all, which did surprise me when i looked her up and saw she had published a book. and i very much did get the vibe that it was the kind of book that would be popular on booktube (not in a negative way like. it's just a Vibe, you can tell) so i was surprised that i had never heard of her because i do love booktube reviews lol

when i found that story i was just in the Mood for vampires (it's what i've been writing for like the last month now) and had literally just searched vampires on that website and was reading a bunch of the short stories, and that one just happened to be the best one, imo. and then i briefly looked her up before recommending it just because i like to do a vibe check before i recommend someone, hahaha

#i mainly watch reads with rachel atm #i like most of her reviews and our 'ideals' align pretty closely for the most part #and i also like her bc i can tell that she genuinely carries the values she talks abt in her reviews in her day to day life #rather than it just being an online persona #tho i have avoided her only good indians review mainly bc im reading it rn but also i simply Do Not listen to anyone elses #horror book reviews bc theyre always bad imo esp coming from someone who doesnt actually read a lot of horror #also she recommends ir*n widow sometimes which always throws me off. it's weird to me that she likes that book #anyways. yeah #ive been trying to find a decent horror book/splatterpunk reviewer and have had 0 luck #i also do end up on booktok sometimes but that always just pisses me off #i HATE what tiktok has done to publishing #sorry i keep complaining about this to everyone lmfao but it genuinely makes me sick <3 #also booktok just has horrible book recommendation lmfao

this is coming from a musical background but i hate the false dichotomy of “art has value because people like it or the powers that be decide that its good” or “you should just make whatever you want for yourself that makes you happy” like it doesnt have to be capitalist consumption or individualist babying... for me the two poles are actually “art is something you do in order to benefit from the process rather than the end product” and “art is an experience you share with other people with the end goal of enriching their lived experience in some way”. i just think there is so much creative narcissism on this earth but actually making art should be the humblest thing in the world because you’re willing to wring out your whole psyche in order to painstakingly create something that you hope will benefit someone else in this intangibly meaningful way. acting like its like shallow and selfish to care how others perceive your art is such weird liberal nonsense and literally your art as a product has no purpose if youre so indifferent to its audience... the process is for you to enjoy and its also acceptable to stop there but if you are going to ask for others to spend their time indulging it then i think u should actually care about how it benefits them..sorry

#like i think the thing where people write the book they always wanted to read is so cute #because it usually comesfrom a place of like i want the kid whos just like me growing up now to have what i didnt have #and if it doesnt already exist im going to make it for them #n usually thats coming from a marginalised perspective #this is why i have 0 patience for artists who arent kind to people who like their art lol #obviously if you like paint a picture to hang on ur wall or smth then u are the audience #but i mean all the girlies writing this self indulgent boring poetry n then submitting it to lit mags like #if youre just writing it for you then why are you doing that..#sorry aware this is an insane take iw oudlve done numbers in the ussr though #and to be clear i value arts as a process > arts as a product #if that helps but this in less extreme sounding context #and again im especially talking abt music here

it is becoming Increasingly Clear to me that i can no longer be taken out into public because i will start doing to fonts what jirt would do to the rocks and plants whilst on little walks

#the worm speaks #i'm noticing that a lot of signage these days don't have small caps which is a bit sad but i suppose they are somewhat antiquated #most of them have just straight up all-caps and i'm like 'mmmm. would a small caps version be better here?'#the other day i was like 'what if i left everything behind to get a job at a type foundry in taiwan. what then.'#what would i bring to the table there? why a sense of western aestheticism for the latin glyphs in their fonts #combined with a lesser but probably still noteworthy knowledge of chinese calligraphy to help ensure there is a sense of unity #btwn the latin and chinese glyphs #and also kerning i would bring kerning to the table for the latin glyphs. like if we Must be monospace abt things we can do that #but on god. the number of times i download a cn script font and go 'ah.' bc the english is the Ugliest monospace serif you'll ever see #fortunately while it is a bit of work it's at least easier to match english fonts to cn ones bc there are So Many more free ones lol #the other day i was looking through a chinese font website n i was reading their ~story~ behind this one particular series #that they based off the calligraphy in these five or six Ancient Rare Books in the national palace museum #and they were like 'yes the poetry was beautiful and moving. but to a type designer the writing itself is even more attractive'#and i felt so called out. i have just the most incurable font disease on the planet lmao #the other thing i think that might be neat to bring to cn font design Would be the concept of italics #like i know that's just not a standard thing and that Makes sense bc to oblique the letters is just #like. why would you do that. it's hard to read. but the spirit of italics is to change the font style entirely whilst keeping in harmony #with the rest of the regular typeface which i think would be Neat to bring in esp since italics usually have a bit more flourish to them #the other day i also found out that fangsong is used in government documents n i was like #>:0 no wonder it has every character and variant known to man......
