8, 14 and 13 for the fairy tale asks please?
8. Recommend a particularly ambitious fairy tale retelling.
I had to think about this, and I kept thinking back to Donna Jo Napoli. Her books aren’t especially brick-like or elaborate, but they were the first re-imaginings that I read that approached the stories with real psychological and historical weight. They were dark, not because she made them “gritty” but because she asked questions like what would being locked in a tower by yourself really feel like? It’s challenging pulling off a more “realistic” spin on fairy tales and not always a good idea, and I usually like stories that play up the magical and strange, but as a kid, Zel and Spinners were revelations.
Hat tip also to Spinning Silver and Daughter of the Forest.
14. What’s your childhood favorite fairy tale?
Snow White and Rose Red and Tatterhood. The versions in the Blue Fairy Book and Tatterhood and Other Tales (I have no memory of the Other Tales). Those are the ones I would demand my mom read repeatedly.
13. Wild card recommendation
I am going to go with the art of Trina Schart Hyman. Her style is so lovely and so evocative, perfect for fairy tales. Many of her books are out of print, and it’s a damned shame.
Thanks for the asks!
