Part five of my fic for the Leverage Appreciation Weeks Event!

I’ll be posting one section a day this week leading up to the beginning of Leverage: Redemption on the 9th!!!  One more section to go!!  Art is included in the text, ID at the end; summary and tags below.  Hope you enjoy!  :)

Nathan Ford was an enigma.  He was like Sophie, always around, but not as engaged in the Pub as Hardison, Eliot, or even Parker.  Amy had only spoken to him insofar as to get him food or drink, but she’d had plenty of time to observe him around others.  He was all battered and rough edges, but in a different way from Eliot or Parker, who seemed more engaged than withdrawn.

Amy had only sketched him once, when Parker suggested it out of curiosity.  She stopped after that, when she realized that this unassuming man seemed to harbor secrets and shrewdness that she didn’t want to pry into.  Parker had just nodded with the comment, “You see it too,” and then never spoke of it again.

So Amy kept her distance and watched.  He was good with people most of the time, but he brightened most around Sophie.  Those two, Amy knew, had a long history, and lots of stories they could probably tell.  Mr. Ford knew the names of everyone who worked in the Pub, was polite, but not friendly.   Amy suspected that he knew more about everyone she worked with than she herself did.  It was an uncomfortable supposition.

She was just pulling the chairs off the tables and setting them back onto the floor to start opening for the day when Mr. Ford came in and helped her finish.

“Sit with me a moment.”  He sat down in the chair he’d just moved.

Amy took a seat opposite and wondered if this would be as odd a conversation as the one she’d had with Sophie a few weeks ago.

“How does your family feel about you working here, Amy?” Mr. Ford questioned.

There was no way for Amy to stop herself from frowning, but she decided that it would be better not to answer at all than try to prevaricate in front of this man.

A small, crooked smile crossed Mr. Ford’s face as he leaned forward.  “I suspect they aren’t very happy with your decision.  But you’ve been here a while now, and don’t look like you’re planning to quit any time soon.  Am I right?”

Amy unbent enough to tilt her head up in affirmation.  She still didn’t know what this man wanted.

“If your family told you to quit, would you?” Mr. Ford continued.

“No,” Amy replied stiffly.

Mr. Ford nodded, watching her intently.  “There are better paying positions that would help you with school.  Why stay?”

What was it about Mr. Ford and Sophie that they felt the need to question her integrity this way?  Amy breathed deeply before replying, knowing her voice was tight with irritation.  “I like it here.  Hardison is a great boss, the rest of the staff is family.  There’s more important things in life than money.  Besides, if I hadn’t been working here, I would very likely have been kidnapped for ransom.”

The wry smile was back in force as Mr. Ford stood and put a startlingly gentle hand on her shoulder.  “You’ll do.”

Then he walked into the back, leaving Amy staring after him.

4: Nate speaks to the Verd Agra C.E.O., saying "Oh, we are the Quincy Green Farmers Club, and I'm gonna tell you something, sir. We are writing a stern letter." The C.E.O. looks angry.
