OH FUCK OFF someone on tiktok just pointed out that the final shot of Bird Buttons on Izzy’s grave is both of their first mates. Ed and Stede have forgone their captain identities but their first mates are still looking after them. i need a fucking second

i just need to talk some more about one of my favorite sequences of events in the entire season.

stede says he'll be right back and runs off into the woods, directly paralleling him leaving ed alone at the dock in s1e9.

buttons says "to love the sea as she must be loved requires change."

ed says "people don't change, buttons. not into birds or otherwise."

buttons seemingly successfully transforms into a bird and flies off.

within seconds, stede returns, tells ed he couldn't find his way back to the ship, and asks ed to come with him, in direct contrast to s1e9.

it's such a simple sequence, but such a perfect one. people do change. both into birds and otherwise.

i genuinely love how buttons wastes NO time in assuming his first mate duties again and directing frenchie and roach to start preparing the ship for sailing. it's just a nice reminder that stede chose him as his first mate for a reason beyond his propensity to attract a motley crew of unique characters - buttons is a genuinely highly skilled, highly competent, and extremely dedicated and hard working sea farer. who may or may not actually be a sea witch that has taken on the form of a humble man
