Finally visited the Manila Metropolitan Theater. It barely survived WW2 and is more than 90 years old (second photo from WW2 by J Tewel, Time Magazine).
There we watched Encantada by National Artist for Dance Agnes Locsin, where she applied choreography inspired by traditional Philippine dances called neo-ethnic dance. With music by Joey Ayala and Ang Bagong Lumad.
See inside the MET, and learn about Agnes Locsin's Encantada and her neo-ethnic choreography: https://filipeanut.art/the-manila-metropolitan-theater-the-neo-ethnic-encantada/

The 72nd Miss Universe was one of the most bittersweet competition 🇵🇭
Michelle Dee was a high caliber candidate presenting the country🇵🇭 with pride. Her quest for the Miss Universe crown will forever be remembered. Im so happy that the Philippines are back on having placement but what saddens me a lot is that we never see her enter the top 5 this upsets the pageant fans most especially the Filipino people because we believe that there are posibilities that she will bag the crown despite her strong advocacy and intelligence in answering QNA's 👑✨
Forever a Queen raising the Philippines flag🇵🇭 Congratulations Michelle Dee Top 10 finalist 💋

Kidlat Tahimik: History Through the Bamboo Camera (Published in ArtAsiaPacific)
Kidlat Tahimik: History Through the Bamboo Camera (Published in ArtAsiaPacific)
Conversing with Kidlat Tahimik was as surreal as watching his movies. His narratives unfold in different layers, steadily unraveling stories and perspectives, giving insight into his practice and the world he examines. He described his film practice and aversion to scripts, shared his life story and how his experiences translated into his works, offered his perspective of taking time and letting…

DZRH News on Twitter @dzrhnews:
JUST IN: Drag artist na si Amadeus Fernando Pagente o mas kilala bilang Pura Luka Vega, muling inaresto ng MPD
RH29 @/boy_gonzales

Bahaghari on Facebook: Pura Luka Vega's rearrest highlights LGBTQI's non-enjoyment of freedom of expression and artistic freedom
After months of being released on bail, drag artist Pura Luka Vega has been arrested again, this time by a different court but with the same complaint.
Bahaghari once again condemns the weaponization of the law against Pura and their right to freely express their relationship with faith through art. Evangelical groups have allotted resources to further marginalize an LGBTQI+ person in the court of law. Similarly, many city councils across the Philippines have declared them "persona non grata," following a viral video where they, dressed as Jesus Christ, performed Ama Namin remix in a bar.
It has not gone unnoticed to Bahaghari the double standards at play in this case. Pastor Apollo Quiboloy of the mega-church Kingdom of Jesus Christ was indicted by FBI for alleged crimes against women and children but none of the city councils who have declared Pura "persona non grata" are mum on this issue. Until now, Quiboloy is in hiding even with summons from the Senate in their investigation on the abuse allegations against him. Furthermore, the complainants for the case are all affiliated with the Philippines for Jesus Movement (PJM) founded by Eddie Villanueva, the father of Senator Joel Villanueva, whose office has deployed disgusting tactics to delay the SOGIESC Equality Bill.
The art of drag and other similar acts of expression by LGBTQI+ people are under attack around the world. In the United States, legislations have been passed to criminalize people based on gender identity and expression. In the Philippines where a national anti-discrimination law is absent, LGBTQI+ individuals are subject to gender-based violence.
Pura Luka Vega's case is an attack on LGBTQI+ people's expression on their relationship with faith and religion and the expression of their artistic freedom. LGBTQI+ individuals have different expressions on their faith. Many are still practicing their religion. Some have abandoned it altogether due to the trauma and marginalization they felt in the presence of their religious leaders.

The Sierra Madre Creative Costume Design ⛰️🇵🇭
Tumblr media
Millions of years ago, when giants roamed the world, there was a family: Lusong, a great warrior; Sierra, a loving mother; and their two sons, Iloco and Tagalo. They lived by the sea, where they pulled up fish from the waters, hunted in the nearby woods, and settled on the rocky shore.⛰️
Their only problem was Bugsong Hangin, the King of the Easterlies. He had once courted Sierra, but when she chose the mighty Lusong as her groom, the ruler of the winds always came to show his wrath.
He would rip trees from their roots, raise the rage of the seas, pour down torrents of rain. He would not stop, for he loved the beautiful Sierra—but because she did not love him, he then vowed to bring the greatest force of his army to destroy everything that she held dear.
One day, the attacks finally killed Lusong. Before he perished, however, Lusong made Sierra promise that she would always protect their sons.
Sierra made a final sacrifice that would stand eternal against the madness. She laid herself down upon the coastline, her back forever to the winds, her arms cradling her boys.
Bugsong Hangin would bring storms and destruction, but the loving mother would always keep him out. Upon her body grew forests, and in those lush wilds were beasts and birds like no other. Bugsong Hangin would always retreat to the ocean, to rethink his strategies, reassemble his troops, sharpen his weapons—but always, his army would break apart when it met thecrests and valleys and curves of the Sierra Madre.

ruminating on the leftism that guides much of my thinking. i'm avoiding the very common pitfall of simply applying theory (written by people benefiting from colonialism a few hundred years ago) to living conditions here in the neocolony of america and looking for ways to actually apply historical dialectic into here--it takes a lot of self awareness because as with all things the majority left position in the philippines is based off of joma sison's MLM-ness and the struggle for a national democracy, which has now kind of devolved into a ultranationalist jerk off between colonial intelligentsia and constant protesting and rallying. whenever they are challenged by the state, the main response is that "everything they've been doing is completely legal" and that nothing they've done is wrong. of course, paradoxically, as Mark Fisher writes in capitalist realism, much of this ends up just reifying capitalist reals and borders, and neatly squares away activism into yet another portion of capitalist life. activism (now also commonly romanticized by so many of those in the middle class to the petty bourgeois) is now subsumed into capitalism.
of course, from my point of view, doing something is better than doing nothing. i've participated in the movements of the national democratic mass organizations of the PH (anakbayan, etc.) (and still do, though my capacity has become limited and i'm focusing on supporting the communities closest to me for the time being) but they're increasingly becoming a sort of ideological stepping stone and for the most part i believe they have been completely subsumed into capitalist ideology.
i think the philippines is largely mostly just capitalist now, even with some modes of tenancy in the countryside seeming feudal, it operates entirely within a capitalist mode of view and application.
i don't subscribe to the sort of unilinear evolution of societies espoused by some soviet theorists (the classless -> slave -> feudal -> capitalist -> communist thing)--a lot of classical leftist and marxist theories can be pretty easily seen as sort of eurocentric. that's no bash, that's just the work of limited perspective. future marxists like fanon expand the marxist perspective greatly, though they seem to be largely ignored by the white bourgeois in my experience
i think ph leftism should be a lot more aware of local ideas on society, and use that to sort of influence and shape their leftism. a lot of leftists sort of scoff at "precolonial studies" as sort of cute at best and absolutely ethnocentric backwardism at worst (many ph leftists know jack shit about precolonial ph and/or seasia in general due to the education system of the philippines and the america-centric culture of the metropoles)
if we apply historical materialist dialectic all the way back to pre-hispanic times we get a treasure trove of societies to contrast and synthesize upon. a shared culture and binding connections with the rest of asia. the ideal state is of course international consciousnesses and solidarity--one that doesn't fall into the trap of capitalist reification through nationalism and the enforcement of the cacophony of signifiers that only serves to reinforce capitalist structures (jingles, voting, art that just regurgitates old socialist aesthetic, revolutionary art that doesn't really say anything because these artists lack proper class consciousness and/or perspective [many ph left artists come from the metropoles after all and/or have been subsumed into nationalist agenda through education systems and the need to belong in communities, art ph being one particularly egregious example that reinforces nationalist signifiers while becoming ignorant of the signified).
all in all the philippine left is completely defeated, as a movement. many leftists adopt anarchist tendencies, joyful militancies, try to live outside of the confines of communism through communes or living in the mountains. if we are to have any chance of challenging capitalism the ph left must interrogate its own biases, interrogate nationalism, review its literature, and then look inward, look to fellow tribes and societies, avoid the interventionist failures of soviet societies, and actually fight for a world that won't just degrade into more wage-labor slavery
"that's idealistic!" if you're shooting for the moon you land on the stars. the direction of the movement is more important than the speed. i fully believe ideological recourse is needed in the ph left--some might even say if there is a ph left still. i wouldn't mind abolishing the idea altogether--the left is still a eurocentric categorization after all. perhaps its time for a new revolution that interrogates current structures, even within so-called progressive organizations, with violent indignation, and finds a way to upend capitalism through a firm grasp in pre-capitalist structures and international ties

Support Filipino Artists!
(CW Discrimination, heavy themes and Politics)
So you may or may not know the current state of Philippine politics. There’s a very strong possibility that the son of one the most heinous and bloody dictators we’ve had in history is going to be president. Couple that with the VP-elect being the daughter of our current Human Rights violating President. We are not in the best state of things. As a Filipino I fear for my own stability and safety in the next 6 years alongside many others. We are fighting for our fragile democracy to not fall into the hands of yet another Marcos Regime. As of now there are peaceful protests and calls for our commission on elections to investigate all electoral anomalies.
Now over the past few days. Filipino artists are experiencing a significant withdrawal of clients simply based on the fact they are Filipino. With the main reason being the results of our elections and our president-elect.
Needless to say this is discrimination over something that’s quite unfair. These are artists who work to help support their own livelihoods and these discriminatory pricks are being heartless. To put it in the most civil of terms, we filipinos, who are non-supporters, of the new political regime are being discriminated against for our nationality. We are not our president-elect.
As we all know commissions can be crucial to artists’ survival so please if you are capable please commission some of our amazing artists. Even if you can’t commission, we all know about the power of online advocacy. Spread the word and if able, encourage others to support filipino artists. Here’s a twitter thread on the current situation concerning filipino artists
A growing twitter thread full of filipino artists to support
To all my fellow Filipinos, May liwanag sa dilim. We will get through this.

Enhypen members view of countries 🇧🇷🇮🇳🇵🇭.....Kpop Reading
Tumblr media
Brazil 🇧🇷
They view this country as a country full of passion and energy. Like a very lively scenery in which something is always happening and a party is always around the corner. A place where you wouldn't want to be inside all day looking at a TV or scrolling through your phone, you'll actually want to go exploring
Enhypen seems to see this country as, yes a beautiful country where a lot of parties occur but they do seem to think that the place is kind of like a beautiful illusion. It's as if they know as a tourist you may getting a glamorized version of Brazil but if they were to live there, reality could hit that its a country with problems like any other country
Enhypen thinks Braizilians are very animated and expressive when they speak. the members may like how they can make ppl feel like family when they're really just strangers. I do see enhypen thinking Brazilians can be a bit overconfident and too aggressive like the type of ppl to stake claim to a person they find attractive and actively go after them (even if rejected still being persistent)
India 🇮🇳
Enhypen thinks it's a religious country with pretty buildings representing their religions. They like the land features of this country (I'm seeing some kind of rainforest). They also like the films this country produces
They may know of some of the political issues India faces (I'm not sure if acid attacks are still common there bc I got a card named "acid" so the members may think/know these attacks happen, maybe they've seen something on the news).
I'm definitely seeing these guys knowing about this countries artistic achievements. Especially when it comes to movies, music and artworks. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the members want to film a movie/music video there.
They don't think the Indian people may have a good sense of fashion/style. They may think Indians live their daily life as they please and isn't seeking to appear "put together", they just do them.
Philippines 🇵🇭
The members think Filipinos are also quite religious and that they're quite compassionate/kind ppl. Enhypen may like the restaurants and the way the people serviced them (professionally but treated them like family).
The members think the country either runs on a lot of charity (the members may have donated to a cause in the Philippines) or that the people are quite charitable (its likely both).
They may think the Philippines/Filipinos don't really solve their issues head on but kind of sweeps it under the rug in hopes it goes away. Like a country that could face a natural disaster and have the country damn near demolished but don't really rebuild the nation and they continue life as if nothing happened.
The members may view Filipinos as ppl who are happy with what they have and appreciative of life. Like ppl who may not be rich financially but their rich mindset wise.
