Field journal 📔
ID: Halictidae family (unsure of genus or species)
Common name: Sweat bee (named because on hot days, they seek out sweaty humans to lap up their sweat—which contains salt and proteins—which they will then save for their young.)
💚🐝
Since I couldn’t narrow down this bee’s ID very far (there are 60 species of sweat bee in FL alone), I can’t tell you much about the species pictured, but I *can* tell you some fun new vocab words I learned while reading about this diverse family of insects.
💚🐝
In the past, I have heard animal species referred to as specialist or generalist species in reference to how picky they are in what they eat, but in pollination ecology, the following terms can be used.
💚🐝
Polylectic: this refers to insects that gather pollen from a variety of unrelated flowering plants.
Oligolectic: this refers to insects that only pollinate a single family or genus of flowering plants.
💚🐝
(Most sweat bee species are polylectic, but there are some that are oligolectic!)
📸 I believe the plant pictured is Genus Seymeria / blacksenna.
📍Orange County, FL

It's also that time of year where I remind you all that bees have tongues! Also tiny toes and knees! Beetrice is probably one of my favorite Pipsqueakery rescue stories. On a particularly warm day in February Beetrice came out of her nest outside and made her way into our house. Our giant bunny, Kaylee, found her first, flipped her over and was batting her around when we found little Beetrice buzzing madly on the floor. While Beetrice wasn't injured it was already far too cold to put a bee back outside because they need to be above a certain temperature to fly. At that point in my life I was actually fairly afraid of bees and at first would only hold her in a fleece blanket. Eventually we developed a bond though and I would feed her off of my hand. Ultimately it turned out Beetrice was an elderly bee and by the time it was safe to release her in the spring her wings had begun to deteriorate because of the aging process. This made it unsafe to release her so she spent her old age in our care. Beetrice taught me to love a species I didn't know I could love and I think that's pretty special. Since it's #GivingTuesday we have a match of $11,400 to meet by midnight. If you're able please consider donating even $1. There are lots of ways to donate including: ❤ Venmo: @ThePipsqueakery ❤ CashApp: $ThePipsqueakery ❤ Zelle: 574-993-2235 ❤ Paypal: [email protected] ❤ Facebook: www.facebook.com/thepipsqueakery and use the donate button ❤️ Paypal GivingFund: bit.ly/PipGivingFund There's no such thing as a donation that's too small just like there's no such thing as a life to small to save! #bee #carpenterbee #nativebee #savethebees https://www.instagram.com/p/CW59zhhjhE8/?utm_medium=tumblr

A trinomial:  Megachile brevis onobrychidis.  Thus it is a declaired subspecies of M. brevis of which there have been several and at least one has turned into a species.  Since the distribution of M. brevis is continental one suspects that this supspecies may also be a species if one were able to look under the molecular hood. This bee was collected in the California Central Valley in Yolo County for research on small-scale restoration in agricultural areas. Claire Kremen's 10-year study of hedgerows shows the benefits of planting native shrubs and forbs in agricultural areas for native bees. Spring is Nearly Upon Us. Our monthly field day @sydneyillawarrabeekeepers yesterday featured a quick inspection of a few of the beehives in the apiary. Although some of the hives were a little quiet as far as bees returning to and from the hive, they seem to be doing quite well. This #flowhive, for example, is about 65% full of capped honey. Given we are still in the middle of winter, it seems the bees are doing quite well with plenty of honey and pollen evident on the frames. It looks like this coming season will kick off early and hopefully lead to a bumper season here in Sydney. Thanks to Ian Phillips and Phillip Chatfield, our more experienced beekeepers at the club, who led visitors through the inspection. . . . . . #saveourbees #honey #bee #nature #savethebees #flowers #honeybee #beekeeping #beekeeper #honeybees #insect #flower #love #beehive #pollinators  #organic #apiary #pollen #entomology #art #hive #hymenoptera #summer #beautiful #nativebee #spring #sydney  (at Sydney Illawarra Beekeepers (Assoc))

. 🐝🐝🐝 Bees, including native bees, bumble bees, and honey bees are one of a myriad of other animals called pollinators. Pollinators transfer pollen and seeds from one flower to another, fertilizing the plant so it can grow and produce food. Many pollinators are disappearing at alarming rates. 🌼🌼🌼 The solution to pollinator health is not a simple one, but you can start by purchasing a bee bracelet right here. For every purchase of a bracelet in the “Save the Bees!” collection, I will make a donation to Save the Honeybees Foundation. This organization works toward educating the public about pollinators, researching solutions for helping them and protecting their natural habitat from threats. Every time you wear your bracelet, you are raising awareness and you can be proud that you helped make a difference. 🐝🐝🐝 Find Bracelets Here: http://bit.ly/2nDKfja 🌼🌼🌼 #beemumbles #yogajewelry #yogabracelets #meditationbracelet #lavarockbracelet #lavabracelet #lavajewelry #diffuserbracelet #essentialoils #savethebees #beerescue #bees #honey #honeybee #pollinators #insect #savetheplanet #honeybees #nativebee #entomology #instabug #protectthebees #bumblebee #beekeeping #nature #beekeeper #savetheplanet #beehive #flowers #garden (at Saint Petersburg, Florida)
