The strange world of brine pools.
Tumblr media
Deep under the sea, there are pools of water, separate from the rest of the ocean. Created when water seeps down through the ocean floor, mixing with long buried salt deposits, resulting in these highly saline pools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The brine itself is uninhabitable for the vast majority of creatures. The lack of oxygen and extremely high salt content quickly sends just about any creature that enters them into toxic shock.
Still, these pools are oases of life on the sparsely populated abyssal plane. The mineral-rich water provides much-needed nutrients to life surrounding these toxic waters.

Comatricha nigra by Sarah Lloyd
“Most slime mold species change considerably in colour, shape, and size as they develop. The cream-coloured fruiting bodies in the foreground started to ooze out of the log right next to the pinkish-coloured ones that appeared the days before. I checked the size and decoration on the spores, the extension of the columnella (extension of stalk inside the spore mass) and the capillitium microscopically and, to my surprise, it turned out to be Comatricha nigra. C. nigra is one of the most common Comatricha species that is usually quite easy to identify by its slightly sub-globose sporotheceae (‘head’) on long stalks, but like all slime molds, it is very variable.”

fun fact old growth forests (basically what it sounds like-- forests with super old trees) have mother trees that take care of the still-growing trees around them by feeding them the nutrients that they might be missing (because their roots are shallower and cant reach them, and they dont get as much sun as the older trees) by using the mycelium pathways beneath the soil (the underground part of mushrooms) and if that isnt the coolest, most heartwarming thing ever i dont know what is

So a new species of dinosaur was just discovered and uh……. They named it Gremlin. Gremlin slobodorum…….
Tumblr media
So Gremilin slobodorum is a species of leptoceratopsid ceratopsian dinosaur that lived during the Campanian stage of the Cretaceous period around 77 million years ago. Its fragmentary remains were first found in the Oldman Formation in Alberta, Canada and were originally thought to have belonged to a different genus of small ceratopsian called Cerasinops since their remains have been found in rock layers around that same age.
Tumblr media
(Cerasinops compared to a modern house cat. Art by cisiopurple on Deviantart)
However, it was just recently discovered to be a completely new genus and so it was given the name: Gremlin slobodorum. The genus name “Gremlin” obviously refers to the mischievous mythical creature while the species name “slobodorum” is in honor of Ed and Wendy Sloboda who were both involved in the discovery of the holotype specimen.
If I’m being honest I don’t really like the genus name of this dinosaur. Like I’m all for extinct creatures having names inspired by mythology but just calling it Gremlin feels lazy in my opinion. Like it does look like a Gremlin but maybe Gremlinsaurus or Gremlinceratops would’ve been better names. But despite its uncreative (in my opinion) name I still think it’s a pretty cool dinosaur and can’t wait for more paleo art of this guy to start popping up. Also, no hate to the people who named this genus or if you like the name. I just wish it wasn’t just called Gremlin. Who knows maybe the name will grow on me.

Spitting out a weird nature fact cause I feel like it-
Cw: cannibalism
Cannibalism is very common in nature. Tiger sharks will eat just about anything, including other tiger sharks. Crabs will eat their own children like popcorn. During birth, if rabbits get overwhelmed during labor, they’ll eat their own kits (baby rabbits). And in some cases, dogs will eat other dogs and cats will eat other cats.
I’m sorry /hj

Ice Shelves at Asphodel Park, Canada (2009) photog. Peter Fricke
A very unusual sight, Peter Fricke takes photos over several days after a flood of the Ouse River into Asphodel park. “Ice shelves” were formed at different levels when the water receded while temperatures were still below freezing.

Random Fact #6,432
Abyssal gigantism (aka “deepsea gigantism”) is a phenomenon where deep-sea creatures are horrifyingly massive compared to their shallower-water counterparts, and scientists aren’t entirely sure why this is.
Some proposed explanations include that it’s an adaptation mechanism to deal with
a) scarcer food sources
b) the massive amount of pressure found at deep-sea depths
c) It’s an adaptation for dealing with the colder temperatures found at such great depths
=-=-=
You know these little guys that you find in your garden?
Tumblr media
Their deep sea brethren can grow to 0.76 m.

It’s Unnatural!: Transgenderism in Nature
Oh, being transgender is unnatural, you say?
Tumblr media
Unnatural
1. Contrary to the ordinary course of nature; abnormal. 2.  Not existing in nature; artificial.
