#naussicaa of the valley of the wind
Text
I've been meaning to finally watch all ghibli movies. And o want to get trough them all by end of August. I've seen bits and pieces of some of them, have watched many a video essayist talk about them.
I'm going to talk about each of them as i watch them, mostly all in chronological order.
But first i'll quickly say something about the ones i *have* seen. In more or less the order i've seen them.
First one i ever saw was 'laputa: castle in the sky'. I saw this one years ago so i don't have many specific things to say. But it's absolutely wondeful. And the action is fenominal
Then i saw either 'Kiki's delivery service' and 'Howl's moving castle' i don't remember the precise order. But i saw both either this or last year. Both once again beatiful stories. I empathised with Kiki so much and it's such a nuanced yet heartfelt coming of age story. Howl's moving castle however might so far be my favourite. It's such a unique take on a beauty and the beast type story and the magic and the world keep me endlessy interested. Also the main theme (Merry go round of life) slaps and every few weeks it starts playing on loop in my brain.
Then i also watched 'Lupin the third: castle of cagliostro' which, yes, i do count.
I'll once again be frank and admit that i don't remember if i watched it before or inbetween or even after the last 2 but whatever, time-blindness is a bitch.
Anyway it's amazing probably the Best Lupin III content out there and it's so influential on animation as a whole. Even if you know nothing about Lupin the third it's fully enjoyable. I'm very angry Netflix doesn't have it anymore because i really wanted to rewatch it (don't worry i did pirate it but i kinda didn't want to because i want to puch Netflix's algorythm towards animation as much as possible. But that's neither here nor there.)
A couple of months ago i saw 'nausicaa of the valley of the wind' which is underappreciated in my opinion. It's based on Miyazaki's own manga. It's a truly epic story with an important message about environmentalism that's as relevas It's ever been. The main character, Naussica is so cool (and I'm fully planning a dnd character greatly based on her). The alien environments and inhabitants of the fungal forests are breathtaking. Nuff´ said.
Then finally, this friday i watched 'My neighbor Totoro' and what can i say that hasn't already been said? A beatiful view in the life of young girls going trough a rough time in their lives juxtaposed with the innocence and beaty of childhood mixed with Japanse mythology. Let's just say Totoro is ghibli's flagship mascot for a reason.
This movie hit particularly close to home because of my job of working with kids their age. And the fear, confusion and even despair the youngest feels about their situation that they're just too young to properly grasp just kept rending my heart in two. Not to mention the older sister who has to be the responsible one and has to keep herself together despite that it's clear how hard it is on her as well. The characters in this film are real in a way that only Miyazaki has mastered portraying.
(Fun fact: the person who voiced the father is 'Shigesato Itoi' who is also the creator of the 'Mother' video game series.)
Finally, finally, to switch things up; today I watched 'a silent voice' i'll probably elaborate more in the future on a different post. But needless to say it's exactly as good as people say it is, maybe even better.
It was a touch longer than i thought it would be but it wasn't really a problem. It's a super interesting story with a nuanced take on redemption, attonement and friendship. Rended in a way that only animation can truly accomplish.
Up next: I'll go in proper release order from now on so next thing is 'only yesterday'. A more slice of life film and one i might even be to young to fully appreciate seeing i'm only just in my mid 20s and the main character is in her early thirties i think. But i've heard nothing but good things about it so i'm sure i'll be fine.
And concidering that i'm sick and won't go into work tomorrow I'll most likely watch it then

千と千尋の神隠し
Spirited Away is easily Hayao Miyazaki's most praised and well known work, especially in North America. My cousin is a few years older than me, and was totally obsessed with Studio Ghibli films back when we were kids. She had all of them on VHS and DVD back in 2006 and we watched them in order of release. We started with Castle in the Sky, which utterly enchanted me. Then we watched Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which is still Miyazaki's magnum opus par excellence in my opinion. After that we got to Princess Mononoke, which is second only to Naussicaa in my eyes. Finally, we got to Spirited Away, and I got so scared by No Face that I had to stop watching. Why No Face scared me more than anything I'd seen in the other Ghibli films we'd watched, I have no idea, the mind of a child is an oft inexplicable place. Some fascinating background about the film itself, it had a budget of about 19 million dollars, which is extremely high for anime production. John Lasseter of Pixar and Disney fame is actually close friends with Hayao Miyazaki and personally led the English localization efforts.
Coming back to the film itself, Spirited Away follows Chihiro and her parents as they're moving to a new neighborhood. The family discovers what seems to be some kind of abandoned amusement park, and Chihiro immediately gets nervous. Her father rushes towards a food stand with her mother close behind, and they start stuffing their faces into ramen bowls. Chihiro walks towards a bathhouse and meets a handsome young lad named Haku, who tells her to take her parents and leave immediately. Alas, her parents have already been pigified and they can no longer return.
The rest of the film follows the fish-out-of-water, Allice in Wonderland-type confusion and wonder of being thrust into another, mysterious world that works very differently from our own. Yubaba is able to take away Chihiro's memory by taking her name, specifically by erasing the second kanji in her name, reducing it just to 千, which means "1,000". Chihiro, now "Sen" has to go up top to work at the restaurant portion of the bathhouse. While working up there, a bizarre, silent spirit named No-Face comes in, and lures in another patron with gold coins and swallows him whole. He continues to demand more food and starts dumping loads of gold on the bathhouse workers.
Upon watching this movie again for the first time in a while, it got me thinking about the "Journey to a mysterious world" trope in media and how differently it's handled in this film. The Spirit World is dangerous, but it isn't Hell. There are good spirits, bad spirits, and what-the-hell-even-is-that spirits. Chihiro and her family are just passersby in this world, and though they aren't really treated well this time, who's to say that if they had landed in another part of the spirit world it couldn't have been better overall?

Yay!! So far I watched Howl, Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service. Which one do you suggest I watch next?
Ny Neighbor Totoro for sure!! that one’s a classic. i love The Secret World of Arriety. Those two i watched most while growing up!!
Some others:
Naussicaa the Valley of the Wind (this one’s an older one but it’s still beautiful)
ponyo (a more recent one!! One of my sister’s favorites :D super cute, i love it so much ;-;)
The Wind Rises (this one is so sad but so good ;-; the quote in my header is from this!!)
Princess Mononoke (i technically watched this one as a kid but one of the characters freaked me out so much I didn’t watch the rest, but i rewatched it a couple years ago and it was SO good)
There’s a bunch of others, but these i can think of on the top of my head! there’s some that are…not so good, as from every studio, but most of them are really beautiful, have gorgeous animation, and amazing storytelling. pLEASE TELL ME ALL YOUR THOUGHTS AAA

How did Asteria figure out she likes girls when she went through mewberty?
This is a little tricky to answer because Mewberty is easily the most under explained thing in the entire Star VS world.
I don’t really think it’s the same ‘just trying to breed’ that some think it is, I think it’s very reliant on what you already know about yourself. Like while I personally see Star as Pan, the only reason why she only went after boys when she was under Mewberty is because she hasn’t quite discovered that part of her just yet.
Basically for me it’s putting a magnifying glass over an aspect of pueberty and emphasizing it as much as can be. With most teenagers it’s the awakening of their sexual appetite, which is why they go into a frenzy to collect members of their preferred gender. But other aspects can also come out, mostly for Ace Mewmans. (Not ONLY Ace Mewmans, but mostly; also Romantic orientation wouldn’t really have a stake in this, this is very much specific to Sexual awakening.)
I was initially gonna have Asteria be one of those ‘non common’ versions (she was gonna be shouting ‘leave me alone’ and bundling up in her own cocoon as referencing her problems with feeling like an outsider in her own family), but I decided that’d be a little too difficult to explain with that image alone and also I could make the ‘she’s a lesbian’ announcement without having to make a love interest for her yet, so I went with the ‘like most teenagers’ route.
So Asteria’s known that she likes girls exclusively for a bit now. I’d like to think that her first crush was when she was 6 or 7 on Princess Odette from the Swan princess or Princess Naussicaa from Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
And since I’ve been a firm Jackie/Janna shipper since Janna was basically introduced (like that was my literal first thought when she was given a speaking role, that she and Jackie would be the most badass couple in Echo Creek) Asteria’s been exposed to the idea of girls being with girls from a young age. She actually comes out to Jackie first when she’s like eleven.

The Re:tired Hero A hero have his retired life with his friend in the forest, but somehow the hero feel this life is strange. In this story, I'm going to talk about facing death.  The hero pretend his friend, who is killed by monster, is still alive because his cannot afford the shock of his friend's death. The hero is going to go through their journey again, and he will recall his memories through the journey. The message that I want to say is how do we face death. The game is going to be set in a forest. Quite and clean. Therefore, I use the forest under the sea of corruption in Hayao Miyazaki's Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind as my model. Trying to make a green forest, a clean and quite green. The lighting is not going to be very strong, but it's sunny. The player is going to control the Hero and use the Hero to explore the story. The objective in this game is finding out where is the Hero's friend going, and through following the friend, the Hero's memories are recalled. There are some enemies in the game, the player is going to jump on the enemies to kill them, or just don't kill them. The enemies are going to be the monsters which are also related to the story. Due to the ending of the game is based on the number of killing enemies, so I think the strategies will be related to this. Since the Hero is retired, the player cannot make the Hero goes out of the forest.   The first level is going to be the introduction level, so I'll try to put as most of mechanics in this room to make the player understand how to play this game. I haven't decided the place of this level, but I think it will be around the Hero's house. The second level is going to be the level which affects the ending, so there will be some enemies as well. This level is going to be part of the journey. Two levels are the minimum, if I have more times, I think it's possible to make the journey longer. In the games, I need a repeating background, platformer texture, wall and checkpoint. Through the game, there will be some signposts or messages to explain the story or how does the Hero feel. Then, into the ending room, there will be some messages to explain the whole story.  The messages are going to be the friends view because it's a reply from the friend. This game is going to be made on Game Maker. I don't really know about it yet, but hopefully I can make all of things I want in Game Maker.

What are some artists that inspire you?
Oh heck yeah!!! Okay! SO! this post gon be long buckle up!!
Alright so to start off, I really really love the work of Noelle Stevenson, both as a writer and artist, her work is very good and gay, and Nimona is one of my absolute favourites. I also really love Hayao Miyazaki, my fav film of his is Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and it’s what really got me both into science and art/storytelling!
Bianca Roman-Stumpff is an artist who is both a friend and mentor, I really REALLY adore her work and she’s been mentoring me in how to work as a selling artist. Please look into her work, it has this incredibly beautiful glowing quality to it, I just Love her so much omfgg. She’s an amazing person and artist.
Another friend and artist I love is James Wylder, Who writes/publishes the 10,000 Dawns Series, (which, I actually have the pleasure of working on as well!) He’s been a great mentor and has given me a lot of really cool opertunieies, I actually interned with his publishing company last semester! if you like scifi please check out 10kd, and Jim’s other work!
Another artist is my grandpa! My grandfather is an artist, a potter, watercolorist, and acrylic artist and he brought me up doing art! He’s most of why i do it really, it’s hard for your parents to tell you you can’t be an artist when you’re watching your grandpa do it. Some of my favourite memories are playing with clay in his studio or painting with him :) He’s really proud of me (tho he’s really sad I don’t like clay lol)
Another artist, and this is p obvious if you look at my art outside of RE, is Georgia O’Keeffe, I love the skulls and flowers, and as a kid i would recreate some of her paintings or make my own to mimic hers. I also really love impressionism and roccoco art, and also Renaissance, and also early christian art, and Pieta’s, and i’m sorry my art history is showing jhafajshdfgahjsgdf I’m inspired by like, all of art history. lol
