I've been gone for a while but it's because I've been working on a game non-stop for almost a year and I'm super excited for its release in May!!
Aphotic Descent is an underwater horror game where you descend into various ocean zones and encounter monsters with all sorts of colorful personalities. It's a bit retro style and takes place in the 1980's.
🦀 It's available to wishlist right now - please support the release! 🦀

The smell of fresh wind hits your face as you stumble across the cliffs of Vihar, a sea of dying and false stars sits above your head. As the distant smell of rain-soaked spiderlillies makes it appearance. Below the rim of the cliff, on the water, you can see the silhouette of the city, faint against the sky. The moon only illuminating your path.
You should've never have come here traveler, this place was never made for you, nor will it ever be.

31 Prompts for October: Horror
Day 12: Nautical horror
Tumblr media
The storm was raging, and the waves were crashing against the hull of the ship. Captain Jones tried to steer the vessel through the dark night, but he knew they were in trouble. He had seen the warning signs: a strange fog, a sudden drop in temperature, a faint smell of decay. He had heard the legends of the cursed waters, where ships vanished without a trace, where ancient horrors lurked beneath the surface. He had ignored them, thinking they were just superstitions. He was wrong.
He felt a jolt, as if something had hit the ship from below. He looked at the sonar screen, and saw a large blip moving fast towards them. He grabbed the radio and shouted to his crew: "Brace yourselves! We have company!"
He barely finished his sentence, when he heard a loud roar, followed by a deafening crash. He turned around, and saw a massive tentacle rising from the water, wrapping itself around the mast. He watched in horror, as the wooden structure snapped like a twig, and fell into the sea. He saw another tentacle emerge, and smash into the bridge, shattering the windows and tearing apart the equipment. He felt a sharp pain in his chest, as a shard of glass pierced his heart. He collapsed on the floor, gasping for air.
He looked out of the broken window and saw the monster's face. It was unlike anything he had ever seen: a huge, bulbous head, covered with eyes and mouths, full of razor-sharp teeth. It stared at him with a malicious grin, as if it enjoyed his suffering. It opened one of its mouths and let out a mocking laugh.
"Welcome to my domain, Captain Jones," it said. "You are not the first to trespass here, and you will not be the last. I have been waiting for you for a long time. You see, I feed on fear, and you have brought me a feast. Thank you for your generous offering."
It leaned closer to him, and whispered in his ear: "Don't worry, it will be over soon. But before I end your life, I want you to know one thing: You are mine. And so is your soul."
It bit into his neck and tore off his head. It swallowed it whole, and let out a satisfied burp.
The storm subsided, and the sea became calm. The ship sank into the depths, along with its crew and cargo. The monster returned to its lair, where it waited for its next meal.
The end.

HELLWHALERS is out there!
Just wanted to give a reminder to folks that the TTRPG that my team and I spent a lot of time with @boguscheesecake writing, and creating exists. HELLWHALERS released November 30th, and you can still get physical editions through PlusOneExp at ttrpg.link/hellyeah and digital copies on the Brewist Tabletop Itch page. Right now we're having some hiccups with digital copies for physical orders, but I'll square those manually if anyone emails me about it at [email protected]. I realized I hadn't made an official Tumblr announcement, but please pick it up if you're into religious horror, nautical horror, Moby Dick, Paradise Lost, The Divine Comedy, Dredge, Mastodon's album Leviathan, or anything in those veins. HELLWHALERS is a token based TTRPG of nautical and Christian-religious horror. Play as damned whalers hunting a leviathan whale across hell's oceans for a chance to earn salvation. This book is visually stunning, and really fun for horror fans. Our team put a lot into this game, and we'd love it if you checked it out! There's also a great essay by @monsterfactoryfanfic about the game. Check out that essay here, and Aaron's other work as well!

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Image descriptions below the cut
Slide 1: A pale grey background. In dark blue lettering, a title reads: "Whale Bones.” In the centre of the page, there is the cover art for this episode. It pictures a person standing at the docks in old timey diving gear. The cover art has arrows pointing away from it with text coming off them. The text coming off the arrows reads as the following: "1. Analog horror 2. Fear the sea 3. Snarky, smart, dumbass 4. Whaaaaaales 5. Body horror 6. Sometimes questions don’t have answers 7. Tired of it all trans girl protagonist.”
Slide 2: A pale grey background. There is a design of a piece of paper in the centre of the page. On the paper, text reads: “A teen girl investigates a local mystery. The more she finds out, the more she begins to regret it.” There is a scuba diver in the top left corner, docks in the top right corner, and waves across the bottom of the page.
Slide 3: A pale grey background. Covering most of the page, there is a design of white lined paper. On the paper, an excerpt from the episode reads: “As I was dragged under I started to panic as any normal creature would, I wasn’t that far from the shore and yet I felt completely helpless, the pitch black water made it impossible to even see my own nose and whatever was keeping me under the surface, I broke, I don’t know how I’m okay because I know I screamed, I felt the cold water fill my lungs and I felt my chest tighten so much I thought my ribs were going to shatter, my cries were drowned out by the sheer pressure of the water around me and yet in a second all that panic was calmed as I felt a shape move under me, It moved too unnaturally to be the sub, I felt a prey-like fear to freeze and at this point I didn’t even know if I was sinking anymore.” There are seashells in the top right and left corners.
Slide 4: A pale grey background. In the centre of the page, there is a design of white lined paper. On the paper, the credits read: “CREW: Written by Kayla Bell. Directed by L M Clohessy. Audio editing by Sorren Briarwood. Art by Necrotika Trashwhore. CAST: Sage Deutscher-Bishop as Charlie Darnam.” There is a scuba diver in the top right corner, docks in the top left corner, and waves at the bottom of the page.
