A heroine clutches a plantain tree to keep upright as her legs become too weak to support her weight. She looks aimlessly towards the ground as she suffers from a condition known as vipralambhashringara, or love in separation. The Virahini Nayika, or woman in longing, is a popular subject in Pahari painting. She is often depicted alone, feeding animals, staring out into a storm, smoking a hookah, or like the present painting, clinging to a tree.

The one who separates herself from her lover due to jealousy and quarrel. Blinded by rage, anger dousing all rational thoughts, she discards all his words, shuns him and sends him out of her house. Dawn arrives, all rage, jealousy and anger simmers down, the mind has stopped playing its tricks, but the heart is in despair.
A day spent in rue, hearts aflame and broken, lips that desire to apologize, and egos too stubborn to accept their own faults.
In an angry outburst, you released poisonous arrows of bitter words. Not once, did you pay heed to him. Did you not for once glance at his earnest eyes? Where are your love proclamations now? All turned to dust?

This nayika is the one who actually in dance is angry at the hero. They fought with each other, a very serious fight. The reasons can be different. It could be envy or maybe doubts. The hero can be right, he wasn't having an affair with another. The girl mistook him or maybe the guy did not come at the scheduled location on time, hence the heroine is now annoyed and rebukes him.
This could also be used as a way to present miscommunication between partners that leads to differences and fights.
Over here the girl has doubted him once again, reason not specified. But one can only take anything to a limit.

• From the source: Here a woman steals off through the wind and rain to meet her lover. At court the monsoon was a favored season for love-making, for the courtier could stay at home while the lady ventured forth through the perilous storm. For a woman at court, braving the elements to reach her lover was a welcome release from the tedium of daily life; hence, this was a popular image. The peacock on the roof heralds a night of love-making.

What does Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar want from Nandini?
When we read the novel, we observe see that Pazhuvettaraiyar acts like a fool when Nandini is involved. He often has an inkling of what's happening but he just can't resist when Nandini smiles or cries and demands something.
No, No, No. You can call in a thousand magicians. You can even make them live here in the palace. But please don’t go.
Is it just because Nandini is a beautiful woman?
. . . No, Pazhu is going through his midlife crisis.
Pazhuvoor brothers were born at the end of Adithan's reign and the beginning of Paranthakan's reign. Adithya I had some difference of opinion with his father-in-law (Rashtrakuta Emperor) that resulted in wars. There were constant fights with Pandyas which resulted in the Pandya king fleeing to Lanka. They grew up in this turbulent atmosphere and as career military men, they too participated in the campaigns from the time they were able to fight.
As the elder brother, Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar might not have gotten many opportunities to be a carefree young man. He also had the 'misfortune' of not having a son despite marrying 8 times. He overlooked the dissatisfactions in his personal life and concentrated on his very demanding and important job. We know that he is actually a romantic at heart, but his Romeo days are half-a-century behind him or never happened at all.
Pazhu would have met thousands of beautiful women in his life. We have no reason to think that his other wives aren't stunning. But when he met Nandini, he was questioning his place in the universe. He says that Chola forces would have won even if he hadn't gone to Madurai. That was highly irresponsible considering his current position but he wanted to feel some adrenaline rush. Still that was only a small boring detour for him.
At first, I could not believe my eyes. I blinked repeatedly and you were still there. I came nearer you, thinking that you were a nymph of the woods, that you would vanish as I approached. But you didn’t vanish. I wondered whether you were a celestial being or a gandharva maiden who had been cursed to come down to earth, like in the stories I’ve heard in the puranas. I thought you might not know the language spoken by human beings. I asked you, ‘Girl! Who are you?” You replied in chaste Tamil, ‘I am an orphan, searching for refuge. Save me.'
After yet another boring war and usual success, he had a fresh thrilling experience - finding a lonely beautiful woman in the forest seeking asylum. Pazhu finally got the exciting opportunity to feel like a hero in the romantic stories he reads so vociferously! Aha! He fulfilled his nayakan part in this natakam perfectly. He fell in love, married the nayika, took her to the palace, gifted her fineries and acted amorously.
I have grown besotted with women in my old age . . . Why was she so special? Sometimes, the way she behaves and talks does give room for suspicion . . . And did he not have to consider the fact that she had dared to marry a man who was more than fifty years old? . . .  Why, she could easily have caught Sundara Chozhan's eye! . . . Why did she often sit by herself in the latha mandapam? What for? . . . And then, how long was she going to force him to be celibate, although he was married to her? . . .  It seemed like a ruse, the kind practised by cunning women one read about in stories.
At the same time, Pazhu isn't that delusional either. He feels insecure that he got to marry Nandini only on 'first come, first serve' basis. He constantly dreads youngsters mocking him. Even Sundara Cholan is younger than him despite having children of Nandini's age. Deep within, he also knows that Nandini doesn't actually love him (source: love stories of cheating women).
His heart filled with pride when he thought of Nandini picking up a sword to kill someone who insulted him. Her eagerness to protect his dignity elated him greatly.
Everytime Pazhu feels doubts or his brother warns him, he goes into deep denial despite his better instincts. When he realises that he had never seen Nandini being genuinely happy, he wants to hear her talking about harming Karikalan though he starts feeling the conflict and reminds her that he is former chief of Velakkara Padai.
He could have scolded or even raped Nandini if he just wanted to satisfy his lust. But he wants the full romantic package with intense love, small naughty talks, honeymoon trips and mind-blowing sex. She is his do-over wife, an opportunity to live out the book stories, feel younger, needed and above all, desired.
Chinna Pazhuvettaraiyar (and others) is really baffled that this intelligent and responsible man is acting like a dumb teenager. He can't understand what is going on because he is at peace with the fact that he is an old grandfather in semi-retirement. In fact, it is youngsters not treating him like an old-man that offends him greatly.
Periya Pazhu finally breaks out of this fantasy and decides to behave like a man of his age and position. Unfortunately for him, it was too late and he had to pay for these fantasies with his life.

Standing beneath the pink blossoms of a small sapling, a lone nayika wanders an open glade. The vast empty landscape emphasizes the woman’s loneliness, the only audience for her longing tune being a blackbuck deer—horns delicately embellished with gold and a jeweled necklace around its outstretched neck—who serves as a stand-in for her absent lover. A cool white sun peeks through the morning haze, bringing a tinge of gold into the slowly brightening sky—the flat layers of metallic and cool colors evoking the feeling of a spring morning. The iconography is immediately recognizable as that of Todi Ragini, which recalls the wistful mood of love in separation.
See another folio of Todi Ragini at the Royal Collection Trust (acc. RCIN 1005127), which while stylistically quite different, shares a similar composition to the present painting, characterized by a scarce background and the trifecta of nayika, deer, and tree.

Expression of Passion by a Lover to her Beloved - The Padams in Carnatic Music
Padam in Indian Carnatic Music are pieces that are sweet, slow monologues by a Nayika to her Sakhi, her female companion or a pet bird, usually a parrot, on her love to her beloved, who is usually the Lord. Even though by structure, Padams are similar to Keerthanas, comprising of Pallavi, Anu Pallavi, and Charanas, Padams portrays the passionate love, and even sensual love, between the singer and her Lord. Padams are enriched with the Shringaara Rasa, one of the Navarasa, the nine emotions, and show the plight of the Nayika, who suffers pain from separation of her lover. 
Padams are composed in languages such as Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam. Indian classical dancers also give life to Padams by their enchanting movements and passionate expressions. Dance forms such as Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali.
The prolific Telugu poet, Kshetrayya is credited with perfecting the format of the Padams used today.  A unique feature of his Padams is the practice of singing the Anu Pallavi first then the Pallavi (second verse followed by first verse). Kshetrayya’ s work has played a major role in influencing poetry, dance, music of the South Indian tradition.
Another composition that is similar to Padam is the Javali. Like Padam, Javali also incorporates the Shringaara Rasa. So you may ask what’s the difference between the both?
Padams are intricately crafted lyrical songs. The musical structure carries a Pallavi, an Anu Pallavi and Charanas. There is an intensity of outpouring of emotions in Padams. Padams are usually slow-moving songs, which have a depth of musical intricacies. They bring out their respective raag bhava to the utmost extent. A Padam may have as its protagonist a Nayaka, a Nayika or a Sakhi, who bring out the appropriate emotions.
Javalis are livelier than Padams; usually sung in Madhyama kalam (the medium tempo used in Carnatic Music). Javalis may not have an Anu Pallavi, but have a Pallavi and Charanas. Javalis do not bring out the raag bhava as deeply as Padams. They may not be as serious in nature as Padams. Owing to their relative liveliness, Javali give themselves very well to shorter time periods of Abhinaya exposition as compared to Padams which can be expounded upon for a much longer time. Javalis are usually composed in popular ragas, and their lyrical quality is apt for the general setting of a lively earth mood.
